Three derivatives of anthraquinone deposited on Cu(1 1 1) have been observed by STM at liquid nitrogen temperature. Adsorption of the three molecules is found to be strongly dependent on the end group (phenyl, thienyl and pyridyl) surrounding the anthraquinone central part. While adsorption of the bi-pyridyl compound yields single molecules on the copper surface, evaporation of the phenyl derivative leads to the formation of stable dimers. The bi-thienyl anthraquinone has an intermediate behaviour with dimer formation and single molecule adsorption. These findings are assumed to result from the polar character of the molecules and from the bond strength of the different substituents with the metallic surface.  相似文献

In this Letter we report the observation, by scanning tunneling microscopy, of a Mott metal to insulator transition at the surface of 1T-TaSe2. Our spectroscopic data compare considerably well with previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and confirm the presence of a large hysteresis related to a first order process. The local character of the tunneling spectroscopy technique allows a direct visualization of the surface symmetry and provides spectroscopic measurements on the defect-free region of the sample. It follows that the electronic localization is driven purely by the enhancement of the charge density wave amplitude which drives a bandwidth controlled metal-insulator transition.  相似文献

Femtosecond time-resolved core-level photoemission spectroscopy with a free-electron laser is used to measure the atomic-site specific charge-order dynamics of the charge-density?wave in the Mott insulator 1T-TaS2. After strong photoexcitation, a prompt loss of charge order and subsequent fast equilibration dynamics of the electron-lattice system are observed. On the time scale of electron-phonon thermalization, about 1?ps, the system is driven across a phase transition from a long-range charge ordered state to a quasiequilibrium state with domainlike short-range charge and lattice order. The experiment opens the way to study the nonequilibrium dynamics of condensed matter systems with full elemental, chemical, and atomic-site selectivity.  相似文献

We simultaneously measured the force and tunneling current in three-dimensional (3D) space on the Si(111)-(7 × 7) surface using scanning force/tunneling microscopy at room temperature. The observables, the frequency shift and the time-averaged tunneling current were converted to the physical quantities of interest, i.e. the interaction force and the instantaneous tunneling current. Using the same tip, the local density of states (LDOS) was mapped on the same surface area at constant height by measuring the time-averaged tunneling current as a function of the bias voltage at every lateral position. LDOS images at negative sample voltages indicate that the tip apex is covered with Si atoms, which is consistent with the Si-Si covalent bonding mechanism for AFM imaging. A measurement technique for 3D force/current mapping and LDOS imaging on the equivalent surface area using the same tip was thus demonstrated.  相似文献

Using a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) we have imaged isolated oxygen-related features on the unreconstructed surface between (2 × 1)-O regions on Cu{110}. On the assumption that these are individual oxygen atoms, they appear to occupy mostly hollow sites in the troughs. We suggest that such adatoms constitute an active form of oxygen known to participate readily in deprotonation reactions on copper surfaces.  相似文献

We report inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) of a C8 alkanethiol self-assembled monolayer using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). High-resolution STM IETS spectra show clear features of the C-H bending and C-C stretching modes in addition to the C-H stretching mode, which enables a precise comparison with previously reported vibrational spectroscopy, especially electron energy loss spectroscopy data. Intensity variation of vibrational peaks with tip position is discussed with the STM IETS detection mechanism.  相似文献

Apart from its ability to image surfaces with atomic resolution the scanning tunneling microscope has evolved as a tool to manipulate single atoms and molecules. In this paper we present several examples of atomic manipulation and the formation of nanostructures with this technique. As examples for lateral manipulation, i.e. the sliding of atoms and molecules along the surface, we show CO, C2H4 and Pb on a stepped copper surface, the Cu(211). As examples for vertical manipulation, i.e. the transfer of atoms and molecules between the tip and the surface, we discuss Xe and C3H6. The design of our low temperature scanning tunneling microscope is shortly described.  相似文献

We observe a subharmonic gap structure (SGS) and the Josephson effect in superconducting scanning tunneling microscope junctions with resistances below 100 kΩ. The magnitude of the n=2 SGS is shown to scale with the square of the junction normal state conductance, in agreement with theory. We show by analyzing the Josephson effect in these junctions that the superconducting phase dynamics are strongly affected by thermal fluctuations. We estimate the linewidth of the Josephson oscillations due to phase fluctuations, a quantity that may be important in modern theories of the subgap structure. While phase fluctuations may smear the SGS current onsets, we conclude that the sharpness of these onsets in our data is not limited by fluctuations.  相似文献

Electron donor-acceptor molecular charge transfer complexes (CTCs) formed by alpha-sexithiophene (6T) and tetrafluoro-tetracyano-quinodimethane (F4TCNQ) on a Au(111) surface are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy, spectroscopy, and spectroscopic imaging at 6 K. New hybrid molecular orbitals are formed in the CTCs, and the highest occupied molecular orbital of the CTC is mainly located on the electron accepting F4TCNQ while the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital is predominantly positioned on the electron donating 6T. We observed the conductance switching of F4TCNQ inside CTCs, which may find potential applications in novel molecular device operations.  相似文献

We present a detailed angle-resolved photoemission study on the layered transition-metal dichalcogenide 1T-TaS1.2Se0.8 in the commensurate charge-density-wave (CDW) phase. A drastic reduction in the spectral weight along the high symmetry line GammaM, particularly around the point M, is observed when s-polarized light was used. This implies that the initial state must be symmetric with respect to a mirror plane perpendicular to the line GammaK, which is consistent with conventional band calculations in the absence of the CDW. We conclude that there is only a limited amount of modification of the electronic structure of 1T-TaS1.2Se0.8 in the commensurate CDW phase due to the CDW-related potential.  相似文献

Tunneling spectra for individual atoms and dimers of Mn and Cr adsorbed on superconducting Pb thin films were measured by a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. Multiple-resonance structures within the superconducting gap on the adsorbates were resolved and interpreted as the magnetic impurity-induced bound states associated with different scattering channels. The experiment demonstrates a spectroscopic approach to characterizing the spin states of magnetic structures and exploring the competition between superconductivity and magnetism at the nanometer scale.  相似文献
