The dispersion of hydrophilic and hydrophobic titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles in organic media (styrene and cyclohexane) was studied to evaluate the effect of dispersion quality (i.e., size and stability) on the encapsulation efficiencies of subsequent miniemulsion polymerizations. Through screening studies of various block copolymers, OLOA 370 (polybutene–succinimide pentamine) was chosen as the stabilizer for detailed dispersion studies on both types of TiO2 particles. As a result of strong interactions between the amine end group of the OLOA 370 stabilizer and the hydroxyl groups on the surface of the hydrophilic TiO2 particles, a good dispersion stability and small particle size (Dv = 39–45 nm) was obtained using 1.0 wt % stabilizer and 20 min of sonification. The dispersions of the hydrophobic TiO2 particles resulted in a larger average particle size (Dv = 60 nm) and poorer stability. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The encapsulation of inorganic particles with polymers is desirable for many applications in order to improve the stability of the encapsulated products and disperse ability in different media. Colloidal particles with magnetic properties have become increasingly important both technologically and for fundamental studies. This is due to their tunable anisotropic. In the absence of an applied magnetic field, the particles have isotropic sphere dispersion, whereas in an external magnetic field the particles form anisotropic structures. Here, latexes containing nanocomposite particles of styrene-butyl acrylate/Fe3O4 with core-shell structure were prepared through miniemulsion polymerization technique. Magnetic composite nanospheres with high magnetic content were synthesized through miniemulsion polymerization using a new process based on a three-steps preparation route including two miniemulsion processes: (1) preparing a dispersion of oleic acid coated magnetite particles in water; (2) mixing of modified magnetite particles with styrene/butyl acrylate in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sorbitane mono oleate (Span 80), hexadecane (HD) and (3) miniemulsification of the modified Fe3O4 into the monomer droplets to reach to complete encapsulation. Subsequent polymerization generated magnetic nanocomposite spheres. Hence, the copolymerization reaction was performed on the surface of such particles in order to obtain core-shell morphology for these nanoparticles, which were characterized by several techniques such as TEM, SEM, DLS, TGA, VSM and FT-IR. The magnetic copolymer particles with diameter of 120-170 nm were obtained. The effect of several parameters such as magnetite, surfactants and hydrophobe amounts on the stability, particle size and magnetization were investigated and also optimized.  相似文献

In this paper, poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐sodium sulfopropyl lauryl maleate‐co‐2‐hydroxy‐4‐(3‐methacryloxy‐2‐hydroxylpropoxy) benzophenone)/TiO2 (i.e., poly(MMA‐co‐M12‐co‐BPMA)/TiO2) composite particles were prepared by ultrasonically initiated emulsion polymerization. To study the dispersion and UV‐stability of the composite particles, laser diffraction particle size analyzer (LDPSA), ultraviolet‐visible absorption spectroscopy (UV‐vis), UV‐vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and the weight loss measurement were used. The results indicate that the dispersion of the poly(MMA‐co‐M12‐co‐BPMA)/TiO2 composite particles prepared by ultrasonically initiated emulsion polymerization is good. And the composite particles can absorb UV light; the ultraviolet absorption strength of poly(MMA‐co‐M12‐co‐BPMA) grafted onto the surface of TiO2 has not changed after UV irradiation while that of PMMA changed significantly. The UV absorption strength, weight loss, and Tg changes are in the order PMMA> poly(MMA‐co‐M12‐co‐BPMA) >PMMA grafted onto TiO2> poly(MMA‐co‐M12‐co‐BPMA) grafted onto TiO2. These results show that the ultrasonically initiated emulsion polymerization will enhance the UV stability of composite particles, and the UV‐stability of PMMA can be enhanced by the introduction of the organic UV‐stabilizer BPMA and the inorganic UV‐stabilizer titanium dioxide into the PMMA chains by covalent bond, and the effect of the BPMA and the TiO2 used together is better than that used, respectively. The precipitation of Fe3O4 from an aqueous solution with ammonium hydroxide produced nanoparticles that were coated with a layer of oleic acid [or, in some cases, poly(ethylene oxide) or poly(vinylpyrrolidone)] before their dispersion into the organic phase. The encapsulation of magnetite nanoparticles in poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) or poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate) microparticles was achieved by dispersion polymerization in toluene/2‐methylpropan‐1‐ol. Magnetic poly(glycidyl methacrylate) microparticles were obtained in the presence of poly(ethylene oxide) at the magnetite/monomer interface. The particles containing up to 20 wt % iron maintained their discrete nature and did not aggregate. The effect of the reaction medium polarity, the concentrations of the monomer, initiator, and stabilizer, and the temperature on the particle size, particle size distribution, and iron and oxirane group contents was studied. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Activators regenerated by electron transfer (ARGET) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP)-based aqueous miniemulsion polymerization where the polymerization takes place in the stabilized monomer droplets is described. In this work, we compared styrene, n-butyl methacrylate (nBMA) and tert-butyl methacrylate (tBMA) and investigated the influence of their hydrophobicity on dispersity, molecular weight and particle stability based their partition coefficients (logP) (2.67, 2.23, and 1.86, respectively). Tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) was used as a phase transfer agent for the controlled delivery of Cu2+-Br/tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA), a hydrophilic catalyst, into monomer droplets of varying hydrophobicity. The resulting dispersity and particle stability of each polymer is a function of its logP value, with the most hydrophobic monomer (styrene) displaying the narrowest dispersity and most control (Đ < 1.3), and the most hydrophilic polymer poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (PtBMA) having reduced emulsion stability, determined by the observation of aggregate formation. Selected polymerization parameters, including effects of total ascorbic acid feed concentration and the monomer concentration and their effects on dispersity are reported. The controlled polymerizations of hydrophilic monomers using ARGET-ATRP in miniemulsion conditions and understanding the effect of monomer hydrophilicity on the emulsion stability will broaden the use of ARGET-ATRP in emulsion polymerization for the synthesis of polymer-grafted nanoparticles with hydrophilic corona.  相似文献

In this study, the preparation of various methacrylic particles with monodisperse size via dispersion polymerization in polar media was discussed. The effect of various polymerization conditions such as polarity of the medium, monomer, stabilizer, and initiator concentration, polymerization temperature, and initiator type on the size and size distribution of these particles was evaluated. The experimental results showed that, with a decrease in the difference between medium solubility parameter (MSP) and polymer solubility parameter (PSP), stabilizer concentration and with an increase in monomer content size of the particles increased and size distribution of them became broader. The obtained results showed that the particle size and size distribution of various polymers were different functions of initiator concentration. It means that, for the production of monodisperse particles, specific amount of initiator is needed for each type of the polymers. Moreover, it was observed that the size and size distribution of the particles with higher polarity were more sensitive to changing the polarity of the medium, and the size distribution of the particles with lower glass transition temperature (T g) is more sensitive to changing the stabilizer concentration which is because of less stability of them. Furthermore, to our surprise, the obtained results showed that, in MSP-PSP of 18.5 MPa0.5, size and size distribution of all types of the particles became equivalent.  相似文献

pH- and thermo-sensitive nanocapsules were successfully synthesized via inverse miniemulsion copolymerization of N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM), N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA), and a functional monomer, 4-vinyl pyridine (4-VP). The size and size distribution of nanocapsules were measured by dynamic light scattering (DLS). The particle morphology was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The final morphology of particles was strongly influenced by the hydrophobicity of functional monomers. The use of a hydrophilic functional monomer, acrylic acid, led to the formation of solid particles, while the use of the more hydrophobic functional monomer, 4-VP, resulted in the formation of nanocapsules. The particle morphology, size, and size distribution were investigated in terms of the content of 4-VP, MBA, and the type and content of surfactant. The pH- and thermo-sensitivities were characterized by measuring the size variation with the change of temperature and pH. The organic-inorganic nanocapsules were prepared by coating a layer of silica particles on the surface of the sensitive nanocapsules.  相似文献

A facile soap‐free miniemulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was successfully carried out via a reverse ATRP technique, using a water‐soluble potassium persulfate (KPS) or 2,2′‐azobis(2‐methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (V‐50) both as the initiator and the stabilizer, and using an oil‐soluble N,N‐n‐butyldithiocarbamate copper (Cu(S2CN(C4H9)2)2) as the catalyst without adding any additional ligand. Polymerization results demonstrated the “living”/controlled characteristics of ATRP and the resultant latexes showed good colloidal stability with average particle size around 300–700 nm in diameter. The monomer droplet nucleation mechanism was proposed. NMR spectroscopy and chain‐extension experiments under UV light irradiation confirmed the attachment and livingness of UV light sensitive  S C(S) N(C4H9)2 group in the chain end.  相似文献

Summary: In this work, the incorporation of alkane hydrocarbons in poly(styrene-co-methacrylic acid) particles via miniemulsion polymerization was investigated. The reactions were performed at 80 °C for 4 hours, using benzoyl peroxide as oil-soluble initiator. The effects of different concentrations of a hydrophilic co-monomer (methacrylic acid) and different types and concentrations of alkanes, namely n-hexadecane, n-octane and n-heptane were evaluated. Miniemulsion stability at room temperature and reaction kinetics were monitored, as well as the particles size and morphology. Results show the viability of encapsulation of alkanes in miniemulsion polymerizations, especially of alkanes with intermediate chain lengths (e.g. n-hexadecane). When short chain alkanes are incorporated the miniemulsions become less stable, due to their lower hydrophobicity. Based on monomer droplet size distribution data, it was determined that the best concentration of hydrophilic co-monomer for the studied system was 1.0 wt%.  相似文献

The dispersion polymerization of styrene in supercritical CO2 utilizing poly(1,1-dihydroperfluorooctyl acrylate) (p-FOA) as a polymeric stabilizer was investigated as well as poly(1,1-dihydroperfluorooctyl methacrylate) (p-FOMA). The resulting high yield (>85%) of spherical and relatively uniform polystyrene (PS) particles with micron-size range (2.9–9.6 µm) was formed for 40 h at 370 bar using various amounts of p-FOA and p-FOMA as a stabilizer with good stability until the end of the reaction. The particle diameter was shown to be dependent on the weight percent of added stabilizer. Previously, we reported that p-FOA was not effective for the dispersion polymerization of styrene as a stabilizer. Here, we find that p-FOA can indeed be an effective stabilizer for the dispersion polymerization of styrene in supercritical CO2, but the pressure necessary to achieve good stability is higher than pressure used by us previously. This study suggests the possibility that fluorinated acrylic homopolymers are effective for the dispersion polymerization of various kinds of monomers as a stabilizer. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A high-concentration dispersion with nanometer TiO2 particles has been fabricated by a hyperdispersant. The particle distribution, composition, viscosity, thermal stability were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, and laser size analyzer, x-ray diffraction, rheometer, differential thermal analysis, and thermogravimetry, respectively. The mean particle size of the nano-TiO2 concentrated dispersion was 72 nm with an especially narrow distribution, and near to monodispersion. The viscosity of 55 wt% nano-TiO2 dispersion is 30 mPa·s at 344 s?1. The dried dispersion composition made from the nano-TiO2 and the hyperdispersant has good thermal stability.  相似文献

The sterically stabilized emulsion polymerization of styrene initiated by a water‐soluble initiator at different temperatures has been investigated. The rate of polymerization (Rp) versus conversion curve shows the two non‐stationary‐rate intervals typical for the polymerization proceeding under non‐stationary‐state conditions. The shape of the Rp versus conversion curve results from two opposite effects—the increased number of particles and the decreased monomer concentration at reaction loci as the polymerization advances. At elevated temperatures the monomer emulsion equilibrates to a two‐phase or three‐phase system. The upper phase is transparent (monomer), and the lower one is blue colored, typical for microemulsion. After stirring such a multiphase system and initiation of polymerization, the initial coarse polymer emulsion was formed. The average size of monomer/polymer particles strongly decreased up to about 40% conversion and then leveled off. The initial large particles are assumed to be highly monomer‐swollen particles formed by the heteroagglomeration of unstable polymer particles and monomer droplets. The size of the “highly monomer” swollen particles continuously decreases with conversion, and they merge with the growing particles at about 40–50% conversion. The monomer droplets and/or large highly monomer‐swollen polymer particles also serve as a reservoir of monomer and emulsifier. The continuous release of nonionic (hydrophobic) emulsifier from the monomer phase increases the colloidal stability of primary particles and the number of polymer particles, that is, the particle nucleation is shifted to the higher conversion region. Variations of the square and cube of the mean droplet radius with aging time indicate that neither the coalescence nor the Ostwald ripening is the main driving force for the droplet instability. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fine magnetite nanoparticles, both electrostatically stabilized and nonstabilized, were synthesized in situ by precipitation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) salts in alkaline medium. Magnetic poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) microspheres with core‐shell structure, where Fe3O4 is the magnetic core and PGMA is the shell, were obtained by dispersion polymerization initiated with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN), 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanovaleric acid) (ACVA), or ammonium persulfate (APS) in ethanol containing poly(vinylpyrrolidone) or ethylcellulose stabilizer in the presence of iron oxide ferrofluid. The average microsphere size ranged from 100 nm to 2 μm. The effects of the nature of ferrofluid, polymerization temperature, monomer, initiator, and stabilizer concentration on the PGMA particle size and polydispersity were studied. The particles contained 2–24 wt % of iron. AIBN produced larger microspheres than APS or ACVA. Polymers encapsulating electrostatically stabilized iron oxide particles contained lower amounts of oxirane groups compared with those obtained with untreated ferrofluid. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Colored latexes with polyurea shell were prepared by applying interfacial polycondensation reaction to the miniemulsion polymerization process. These colored latexes were composed of polystyrene core and polyurea shell, and their particle size was adjusted to <100 nm. Diisocyanate was used as a hydrophobic monomer, and the equivalent mole of diamine was used as a hydrophilic monomer for interfacial polymerization. It was important to control the rate of interfacial polycondensation reaction in order to prepare small particles. Dye preservation property of colored latex loaded with oil-soluble dye was investigated. Polyurea shell formed at the surface of latex particles could restrain the migration of dyes from the latex particles and improve the dye preservation property. The ability to prevent dye migration depended on the composition of the polyurea shell.  相似文献

A new strategy relying on the use of a phosphate‐based macromonomer (PAM200) to modify the surface of iron oxide nanoparticles was developed for the synthesis of submicrometer polystyrene (PS) magnetic particles. First, iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized using the coprecipitation of ferrous and ferric salts in alkaline medium. Besides the classical oleic acid (OA)/octane‐based ferrofluid, styrene‐based ferrofluids were elaborated with either OA or PAM200 as the stabilizer. In all cases, maghemite (γ‐Fe2O3) was clearly identified, with nanoparticles rather spherical in shape but exhibiting broad particle size distribution (PSD). Both OA and PAM200 led to stable maghemite‐based ferrofluids showing superparamagnetic properties. Further use of these ferrofluids in styrene miniemulsion polymerization resulted in inhomogeneous distribution of maghemite among and inside the polymer particles with OA‐based ferrofluids, whereas PAM200/styrene‐based ferrofluids led to magnetic particles with homogeneous distribution of maghemite inside PS particles. Broad PSD and small nonmagnetic particles were however observed. The true mechanisms operating in these systems are still to elucidate, but this study validates PAM200 as an efficient compatibilizing agent between hydrophilic maghemite and hydrophobic PS. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fe_3O_4/Polystyrene(PSt) magnetic particles with core/shell structure have been prepared in thepresence of Fe_3O_4 magnetic fluid in ethanol/water medium by dispersion polymeriation of styrene. A Fe_3O_4particle formation mechanism was proposed. According to this mechanism, the size of particle nuclei isdetermined by the extent of aggregation of Fe_3O_4 /oligomer. Magnetic particles with diameter ranging from 5to 200 μm were prepared under different reaction conditions. Some polymerization parameters such as theconcentration of monomer, stabilizer, initiator, and ethanol which affect particle size and size distribution arediscussed and their effect on particle formation are explained by the proposed mechanism.  相似文献

Ultrafine black particles, ranging in diameter from 1 to 3 μm, were prepared by dispersion polymerization in a methanol/water mixture with vinyl monomers, nonpolymerizable Sudan black B dyes, and fluorescein isothiocyanate labeled charge control additives. Both the ratio of the methanol to the water dispersion medium and the polymeric stabilizer concentration had significant effects on the particle size. The important role of the stabilizer concentration lay in the particle formation step, during which it determined the particle stability and final particle size. These could affect the extent of the aggregation of nuclei by changing the adsorption rate of the stabilizer and the viscosity of the dispersion medium, resulting in smaller particles. The fluorescent‐labeled charge control additives strongly affected the electrophoretic mobility. A small concentration of fluorescent‐labeled charge control additives increased the electrophoretic mobility. However, a further addition reduced the electrophoretic mobility of the polymer particles. The concentration dependence of the fluorescent‐labeled charge control additives on the deposition behavior in the polymer particles was successfully imaged and thereafter quantified by image analysis. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of non-fluorous random copolymers, composed of 3-[tris(trimethylsilyloxy)silyl] propyl methacrylate and 2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, poly(SiMA-co-DMAEMA) with different comonomer ratios were prepared and utilized as stabilizers for the free radical dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). It was demonstrated that the composition and concentration of the stabilizer have a dramatic effect on the morphology of resulting poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) latex. When the copolymeric stabilizer poly(SiMA-co-DMAEMA) (71:29) was employed, free-flowing spherical PMMA particles were produced in high yield. As the concentration of stabilizer increases, the resulting size of colloidal particles decreases. In addition, the monomer concentration and initial pressure affected the particle diameter of PMMA.  相似文献

Stable styrene miniemulsions were prepared by using alkyl methacrylates as the reactive cosurfactant. Like conventional cosurfactants (e.g., cetyl alcohol (CA) and hexadecane (HD)), alkyl methacrylates (e.g., dodecyl methacrylate (DMA) and stearyl methacrylate (SMA)) may act as a cosurfactant in stabilizing the homogenized miniemulsions. Furthermore, the methacrylate group may be chemically incorporated into latex particles in subsequent miniemulsion polymerization. The data of the monomer droplet size, creaming rate and phase separation of monomer as a function of time were used to evaluate the shelf-life of miniemulsions stabilized by sodium dodecyl sulfate in combination with various cosurfactants. Polystyrene latex particles were produced via both monomer droplet nucleation and homogeneous nucleation in the miniemulsion polymerization using CA or DMA as the cosurfactant, with the result of a quite broad particle size distribution. On the other hand, the miniemulsion polymerization with HD or SMA showed a predominant monomer droplet nucleation. The resultant particle size distribution was relatively narrow. In miniemulsion polymerization, the less hydrophobic DMA is similar to CA, whereas the more hydrophobic SMA is similar to HD. Received: 19 November 1996 Accepted: 20 February 1997  相似文献
