Let ϕ be an automorphism of prime order p of the group G with C G (ϕ) finite of order n. We prove the following. If G is soluble of finite rank, then G has a nilpotent characteristic subgroup of finite index and class bounded in terms of p only. If G is a group with finite Hirsch number h, then G has a soluble characteristic subgroup of finite index in G with derived length bounded in terms of p and n only and a soluble characteristic subgroup of finite index in G whose index and derived length are bounded in terms of p, n and h only. Here a group has finite Hirsch number if it is poly (cyclic or locally finite). This is a stronger notion than that used in [Wehrfritz B.A.F., Almost fixed-point-free automorphisms of order 2, Rend. Circ. Mat. Palermo (in press)], where the case p = 2 is discussed.  相似文献

Let N be a normal subgroup of a finite group G. Let ϕ be an irreducible Brauer character of N. Assume π is a set of primes and χ(1)/ϕ(1) is a π′-number of any χ∈IBr p (G/ϕ). If p∤|G:N|, and N is p-solvable, then G/N has an abelian-by-metabelian Hall-π subgroup; If p∉π then G/N has a metabelian Hall-π subgroup. Received February 22, 2000, Accepted May 9, 2001  相似文献

Abstract

A subgroup H of a finite group G is said to be Hall subnormally embedded in G if there is a subnormal subgroup N of G such that H is a Hall subgroup of N. A Schmidt group is a finite non-nilpotent group whose all proper subgroups are nilpotent. We prove the nilpotency of the second derived subgroup of a finite group in which each Schmidt subgroup is Hall subnormally embedded.  相似文献

A groupG hasweak polynomial subgroup growth (wPSG) of degree ≤α if each finite quotient Ḡ ofG contains at most │Ḡ│ a subgroups. The main result is that wPSG of degree α implies polynomial subgroup growth (PSG) of degree at mostf(α). It follows that wPSG is equivalent to PSG. A corollary is that if, in a profinite groupG, thek-generator subgroups have positive “density” δ, thenG is finitely generated (the number of generators being bounded by a function ofk and δ).  相似文献

For a finite group G, let T(G) denote a set of primes such that a prime p belongs to T(G) if and only if p is a divisor of the index of some maximal subgroup of G. It is proved that if G satisfies any one of the following conditions: (1) G has a p-complement for each p∈T(G); (2)│T(G)│= 2: (3) the normalizer of a Sylow p-subgroup of G has prime power index for each odd prime p∈T(G); then G either is solvable or G/Sol(G)≌PSL(2, 7) where Sol(G) is the largest solvable normal subgroup of G.  相似文献

SupposeG is a nonsolvable transitive permutation group of prime degreep, such that |N G v(P)|=p(p−1) for some Sylowp-subgroupP ofG. Letq be a generator of the subgroup ofN G (P), fixing one letter (it is easy to show that this subgroup is cyclic). Assume thatG contains an elementj such thatj −1 qj=q (p+1)/2. We shall prove that for almost all primesp of the formp=4n+1, a group that satisfies the above conditions must be the symmetric group on a set withp elements.  相似文献

In this paper it is proved that ifp is a prime dividing the order of a groupG with (|G|,p − 1) = 1 andP a Sylowp-subgroup ofG, thenG isp-nilpotent if every subgroup ofPG N of orderp is permutable inN G (P) and whenp = 2 either every cyclic subgroup ofPG N of order 4 is permutable inN G (P) orP is quaternion-free. Some applications of this result are given. The research of the first author is supported by a grant of Shanxi University and a research grant of Shanxi Province, PR China. A classical theorem of Schur states that if the centre of a group G has finite index, then the commutator subgroup G′ of G is finite. A lattice analogue of this result is proved in this paper: if a group G contains a modularly embedded subgroup of finite index, then there exists a finite normal subgroup N of G such that G/N has modular subgroup lattice. Here a subgroup M of a group G is said to be modularly embedded in G if the lattice is modular for each element x of G. Some consequences of this theorem are also obtained; in particular, the behaviour of groups covered by finitely many subgroups with modular subgroup lattice is described. We call a subgroup H of a finite group G c-supplemented in G if there exists a subgroup K of G such that G = HK and HK ⩽ core(H). In this paper it is proved that a finite group G is p-nilpotent if G is S 4-free and every minimal subgroup of PG N is c-supplemented in N G (P), and when p = 2 P is quaternion-free, where p is the smallest prime number dividing the order of G, P a Sylow p-subgroup of G. As some applications of this result, some known results are generalized.  相似文献

Let π be a set of prime numbers andG a finite π-separable group. Let θ be an irreducible π′-partial character of a normal subgroupN ofG and denote by Iπ′ (G‖θ), the set of all irreducible π′-partial characters Φ ofG such that θ is a constituent of ΦN. In this paper, we obtain some information about the vertices of the elements in Iπ′ (G‖θ). As a consequence, we establish an analogue of Fong's theorem on defect groups of covering blocks, for the vertices of the simple modules (in characteristicsp) of a finitep-solvable group lying over a fixed simple module of a normal subgroup.  相似文献

Let G be a finite group. For a finite p-group P the subgroup generated by all elements of order p is denoted by Ω1(p). Zhang [5] proved that if P is a Sylow p-subgroup of G, Ω1(P) ≦ Z(P) and N G (Z(P)) has a normal p-complement, then G has a normal p-complement. The object of this paper is to generalize this result. LetG be a finite group admitting an automorphismα withm fixed points. Suppose every subgroup ofG isr-generated. It is shown that (1)G has a characteristic soluble subgroupH whose index is bounded in terms ofm andr, and (2) if the orders ofα andG are coprime, then the derived length ofH is also bounded in terms ofm andr. For a prime number p let G be a profinite p-PD n group with a closed normal subgroup N such that G/N is a profinite p-PD m group and that H i (V, $ \mathbb{F} $ \mathbb{F} p ) is finite for every open subgroup V of N and all i ≤ [n/2]. Generalising [12, Thm. 3.7.4] we show that mn and N is a profinite p-PD n − m group. In case that G is a pro-p PD n group of Euler characteristic 0 with a closed normal subgroup N of type FP [n−1 / 2] such that G/N is soluble-by-finite pro-p group of finite rank, we show that N is a pro-p PD n − m group, where m = vcd p (G/N). As a corollary we obtain that a pro-p PD 3 group with infinite abelianization is either soluble or contains a free nonprocyclic pro-p subgroup.  相似文献

Suppose that H is a subgroup of a finite group G. H is called π-quasinormal in G if it permutes with every Sylow subgroup of G; H is called π-quasinormally embedded in G provided every Sylow subgroup of H is a Sylow subgroup of some π-quasinormal subgroup of G; H is called c-supplemented in G if there exists a subgroup N of G such that G = HN and HNH G = Core G (H). In this paper, finite groups G satisfying the condition that some kinds of subgroups of G are either π-quasinormally embedded or c-supplemented in G, are investigated, and theorems which unify some recent results are given.   相似文献

In [2] we proved that ifG is a finite group containing an involution whose centralizer has order bounded by some numberm, thenG contains a nilpotent subgroup of class at most two and index bounded in terms ofm. One of the steps in the proof of that result was to show that ifG is soluble, then ¦G/F(G) ¦ is bounded by a function ofm, where F (G) is the Fitting subgroup ofG. We now show that, in this part of the argument, the involution can be replaced by an arbitrary element of prime order.  相似文献

LetD=F(G) be a division ring generated as a division ring by its central subfieldF and the polycyclic-by-finite subgroupG of its multiplicative group, letn be a positive integer and letX be a finitely generated subgroup of GL(n, D). It is implicit in recent works of A. I. Lichtman thatX is residually finite. In fact, much more is true. If charD=p≠0, then there is a normal subgroup ofX of finite index that is residually a finitep-group. If charD=0, then there exists a cofinite set π=π(X) of rational primes such that for eachp in π there is a normal subgroup ofX of finite index that is residually a finitep-group.  相似文献

A finite group G is called p i -central of height k if every element of order p i of G is contained in the k th -term ζ k (G) of the ascending central series of G. If p is odd, such a group has to be p-nilpotent (Thm. A). Finite p-central p-groups of height p − 2 can be seen as the dual analogue of finite potent p-groups, i.e., for such a finite p-group P the group P1(P) is also p-central of height p − 2 (Thm. B). In such a group P, the index of P p is less than or equal to the order of the subgroup Ω1(P) (Thm. C). If the Sylow p-subgroup P of a finite group G is p-central of height p − 1, p odd, and N G (P) is p-nilpotent, then G is also p-nilpotent (Thm. D). Moreover, if G is a p-soluble finite group, p odd, and P ∈ Syl p (G) is p-central of height p − 2, then N G (P) controls p-fusion in G (Thm. E). It is well-known that the last two properties hold for Swan groups (see [11]).  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the action of a p-group G on its powerful normal subgroup N. We shall mainly be concerned to find conditions which guarantee that G acts uniserially on N. We shall also study what consequences uniserial action on N has on the structure of N. (Received 21 August 1998; in revised form 28 June 1999)  相似文献

For a finite groupG letA(G) denote the group of power automorphisms, i.e. automorphisms normalizing every subgroup ofG. IfG is ap-group of class at mostp, the structure ofA (G) is shown to be rather restricted, generalizing a result of Cooper ([2]). The existence of nontrivial power automorphisms, however, seems to impose restrictions on thep-groupG itself. It is proved that the nilpotence class of a metabelianp-group of exponentp 2 possessing a nontrival power automorphism is bounded by a function ofp. The “nicer” the automorphism—the lower the bound for the class. Therefore a “type” for power automorphisms is introduced. Several examples ofp-groups having large power automorphism groups are given.  相似文献
