Turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection produces fields of intense updrafts and downdrafts that are responsible for much of the vertical heat transport. These structures, called plumes or thermals, have horizontal scales comparable to the thicknesses of the boundary layers in which they arise. In the three-dimensional numerical simulations reported here, we have observed that convective plumes organize themselves into clusters with horizontal scales that grow with time and reach the width of the computational domain. In this two-scale process, kinetic energy is transferred mainly to low horizontal wave numbers while the sizes of individual plumes remain on the scale of the boundary layer thickness.  相似文献

We present a scheme to extract the velocity of buoyant structures in turbulent thermal convection from simultaneous local velocity and temperature measurements. Applying this scheme to measurements taken at positions within the convection cell where the buoyant structures are dominated by plumes, we obtain the temperature dependence of the plume velocity and understand our results using the equations of motion. We further obtain the scaling behavior of the average local heat flux in the vertical direction at the cell center with the Rayleigh number and find that the scaling exponent is different from that measured for the Nusselt number. This difference leads to the conclusion that heat cannot be mainly transported through the central region of the convection cell.  相似文献

Entanglement is an important resource for quantum information processing. We provide a new entanglement witness to detect the entanglement of an evolving W state. Our results show that the new entanglement witness matches the evolving W state better than other witnesses or methods. The new witness significantly improves the performance of entanglement detection for some three-qubit states.  相似文献

The statistical properties of the turbulent field consisting of drift waves randomly interacting with a coherent structure are investigated. Large-eddy simulations are performed to numerically visualize the generation of streamwise vortical structures and its interaction with spanwisely rolled-up coherent vortical structure during the spatial development of a turbulent supersonic/subsonic mixing layer at convective Mach numberM c =0.51. Time-dependent three-dimensional compressible conservation equations were solved with a subgrid-scale turbulence model. The numerical code used the finite-volume technique, which adopted alternately in temporal discretization the second-order, explicit MacCormack’s and modified Godunov’s schemes. Both transverse and spanwise perturbations were imposed initially for promoting the formation of spanwise rollers and counter-rotating streamwise vortices, respectively. Numerical visualizations are presented in terms of time-sequence isopressure surfaces and vorticity contours of spanwise and streamwise components. The results show that the spatial growth of three-dimensional vortical structures, in particular, the formation of chain-link-fence type structures, is adequately captured by the present computations. Vorticity dynamics is further analyzed, for the first time, to identify the dominant roles played by the convection effect followed by the vortex stretching effect on affecting the evolution of streamwise and spanwise vortical structures, respectively, forM c <0.6.  相似文献

The influence of helicity on the anomalous scaling of the single-time structure functions of a passive scalar advected by a non-Gaussian velocity field driven by the stochastic Navier-Stokes equation is investigated by the field theoretic renormalization group and the operator-product expansion within the second order of the perturbation theory (two-loop approximation). The set of compositeoperators with the minimal critical dimensions is identified and their dependence on the helicity parameter is found. It is shown that the contribution to the critical dimensions of the structure functions of a passive scalar is given only by parts of the composite operators which are independent of the helicity parameter. Therefore, it is shown that the spatial parity violation has no impact on the anomalous scaling behavior of the passively advected scalar quantity in the turbulent environment.  相似文献

The static potential for a massless scalar field shares the essential features of the scalar gravitational mode in a tensorial perturbation analysis about the background solution. Using the fluxbrane construction of [8] we calculate the lowest order of the static potential of a massless scalar field on a thin brane using series solutions to the scalar field's Klein Gordon equation and we find that it has the same form as Newton's Law of Gravity. We claim our method will in general provide a quick and useful check that one may use to see if their model will recover Newton's Law to lowest order on the brane.  相似文献

We consider the spatially periodic, complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation in regimes close to that of a critical or supercritical focusing non-linear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, which is known to have solutions that exhibit self-similar blow-up. We use the NLS blow-up solutions as a template to develop a theory of how nearly self-similar intermittent burst events can create a power-law inertial range in the time-averaged wave-number spectrum of CGL solutions. Numerical experiments in one dimension with a quintic (critical) and septant (supercritical) non-linearity show a that power-law inertial range emerges which differs from that predicted by the theory. However, as one approaches the NLS limit in the supercritical case, a second power-law inertial range is seen to emerge that agrees with the theory.  相似文献

The technique by Lund et al. to generate turbulent inflow for simulations of developing boundary layers over smooth flat plates is extended to the case of surfaces with roughness elements. In the Lund et al. method, turbulent velocities on a sampling plane are rescaled and recycled back to the inlet as inflow boundary condition. To rescale mean and fluctuating velocities, appropriate length scales need be identified and for smooth surfaces, the viscous scale lν = ν/uτ (where ν is the kinematic viscosity and uτ is the friction velocity) is employed for the inner layer. Different from smooth surfaces, in rough wall boundary layers the length scale of the inner layer, i.e. the roughness sub-layer scale ld, must be determined by the geometric details of the surface roughness elements and the flow around them. In the proposed approach, it is determined by diagnosing dispersive stresses that quantify the spatial inhomogeneity caused by the roughness elements in the flow. The scale ld is used for rescaling in the inner layer, and the boundary layer thickness δ is used in the outer region. Both parts are then combined for recycling using a blending function. Unlike the blending function proposed by Lund et al. which transitions from the inner layer to the outer layer at approximately 0.2δ, here the location of blending is shifted upwards to enable simulations of very rough surfaces in which the roughness length may exceed the height of 0.2δ assumed in the traditional method. The extended rescaling–recycling method is tested in large eddy simulation of flow over surfaces with various types of roughness element shapes.  相似文献

以熔盐为传热工质,对考虑熔盐自然对流情况下横纹管内的流动传热进行了数值模拟。结果表明:同一Re数,横纹管内下侧Nu数大于上侧Nu数,随着Re数的增加,管内下侧Nu数与上侧Nu数的差值逐渐减小。考虑自然对流影响的横纹管内平均Nu数与不考虑自然对流影响的横纹管内平均Nu数基本相等。强制对流的Re数越低,自然对流对横纹管单侧传热影响越明显。横纹管槽宽越小,槽深越深,自然对流对单侧传热影响相对越小。通过非线性拟合,分别得出横纹管内下侧传热Nudown/Nuave-b、上侧传热Nuup/Nuave-b与浮升力参数Bo的关联式。  相似文献

The fields of nanomedicine, risk analysis, and decision science have evolved considerably in the past decade, providing developers of nano-enabled therapies and diagnostic tools with more complete information than ever before and shifting a fundamental requisite of the nanomedical community from the need for more information about nanomaterials to the need for a streamlined method of integrating the abundance of nano-specific information into higher-certainty product design decisions. The crucial question facing nanomedicine developers that must select the optimal nanotechnology in a given situation has shifted from “how do we estimate nanomaterial risk in the absence of good risk data?” to “how can we derive a holistic characterization of the risks and benefits that a given nanomaterial may pose within a specific nanomedical application?” Many decision support frameworks have been proposed to assist with this inquiry; however, those based in multicriteria decision analysis have proven to be most adaptive in the rapidly evolving field of nanomedicine—from the early stages of the field when conditions of significant uncertainty and incomplete information dominated, to today when nanotoxicology and nano-environmental health and safety information is abundant but foundational paradigms such as chemical risk assessment, risk governance, life cycle assessment, safety-by-design, and stakeholder engagement are undergoing substantial reformation in an effort to address the needs of emerging technologies. In this paper, we reflect upon 10 years of developments in nanomedical engineering and demonstrate how the rich knowledgebase of nano-focused toxicological and risk assessment information developed over the last decade enhances the capability of multicriteria decision analysis approaches and underscores the need to continue the transition from traditional risk assessment towards risk-based decision-making and alternatives-based governance for emerging technologies.  相似文献

The multiple filamentation of terawatt femtosecond(fs) laser pulses is experimentally studied in a natural environment.A more than 30-m long plasma filament with a millimeter diameter is formed by the collimated fs laser pulse freely propagating in an open atmosphere. This study provides the first quantitative experimental data about the electron density of a long range light filament in the atmosphere. The electron density of such a filament is quantitatively detected by using an electric method, showing that it is at the 10~(11)-cm~(-3) level.  相似文献

A new integral relationship between the fluctuations b(r, t) of a magnetic field and its mean B 0(r, t) is derived for the steady-state magnetic field in a turbulent medium. This formula provides the estimate 〈b?curlb〉=?B 0?curlB 0. Simultaneously, the coefficient of amplification of the mean magnetic field α effect) is obtained: α=(η+β)B 0? curlB 0/B 0 2 . The formula for α allows for a decrease in this coefficient owing to the back action of the magnetic field on the turbulent velocity field. It is shown that the Zel’dovich’s estimate 〈 b 2〉?β/η B 0 2 for two-dimensional turbulence holds for magnetic fields at the instant the fluctuations 〈a 2〉 of the vector potential, rather than 〈b 2〉, reach a maximum. Here, η and β are the ohmic (molecular) and turbulent diffusion coefficients, respectively. This estimate is refined with allowance made for the fact that the condition for diffusion approximation itself relates the β, b, and B 0 quantities to each other.  相似文献

The paper considers the evolution of turbulent kinetic energy in a turbulent boundary layer perturbed by suction. The results show that the boundary layer equilibrium is altered in a non-linear manner due to suppression of the structures near the wall. The behavior, however, suggests that the wavelength of alteration of the equilibrium of the layer is unaffected by a change in Reynolds number and suction rate.  相似文献
