The logarithmic Cauchy quotient mean

Motivated by recent results on beta-type functions, a new family of means, which are of logarithmic Cauchy quotient type, are determined and characterized.

A monotonicity result for the ratio between two generalized logarithmic means is established. As an application, an inequality of Alzer for negative powers is extended to all real numbers.

In this paper,we find the greatest value p = log2/(log π. log 2) = 1.53 ··· and the least value q = 5/3 = 1.66 ··· such that the double inequality Mp(a,b) T(a,b) Mq(a,b) holds for all a,b 0 with a = b. Here,Mp(a,b) and T(a,b) are the p-th power and Seiffert means of two positive numbers a and b,respectively.

THE OPTIMAL GENERALIZED LOGARITHMIC MEAN BOUNDS FOR SEIFFERT’S MEAN

For p ∈ R, the generalized logarithmic mean L p (a, b) and Seiffert’s mean T (a, b) of two positive real numbers a and b are defined in (1.1) and (1.2) below respectively. In this paper, we find the greatest p and least q such that the double-inequality L p (a, b) < T (a, b) < L q (a, b) holds for all a, b > 0 and a ≠b.     

Initial boundary value problem for generalized logarithmic improved Boussinesq equation

In this paper, we consider the initial boundary value problem for generalized logarithmic improved Boussinesq equation. By using the Galerkin method, logarithmic Sobolev inequality, logarithmic Gronwall inequality, and compactness theorem, we show the existence of global weak solution to the problem. By potential well theory, we show the norm of the solution will grow up as an exponential function as time goes to infinity under some suitable conditions. Furthermore, for the generalized logarithmic improved Boussinesq equation with damped term, we obtain the decay estimate of the energy. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

On the fourth power mean of the generalized quadratic Gauss sums

The main purpose of this paper is to use elementary methods and properties of the classical Gauss sums to study the computational problem of one kind of fourth power mean of the generalized quadratic Gauss sums mod q (a positive odd number), and give an exact computational formula for it.

Sharp power mean bounds for the Gaussian hypergeometric function

Sharp inequalities are established between the Gaussian hypergeometric function and the power mean. These results extend known inequalities involving the complete elliptic integral and the hypergeometric mean.

A mean value theorem for generalized Riemann derivatives

Functional differences that lead to generalized Riemann derivatives were studied by Ash and Jones in (1987). They gave a partial answer as to when these differences satisfy an analog of the Mean Value Theorem. Here we give a complete classification.

     

Approximations and bounds for a generalized optimal stopping problem

We study a finite-horizon nonstationary Markovian decision problem, that can be interpreted as generalized optimal stopping and whose solution via the usual dynamic programming is in most practical cases not feasible from a computational point of view. Under certain assumptions, most importantly stochastic monotonicity, upper and lower bounds are obtained for optimal values and decisions using a reduced dynamic programming. From this, a suboptimal policy is derived with an upper bound on its suboptimality. Computational aspects and a particular application from optimal exploratory oil drilling are discussed.

Zusammenfassung In der Arbeit wird ein nichtstationäres Markowsches Entscheidungsproblem mit endlichem Planungshorizont betrachtet, das als verallgemeinertes Stopp-Problem interpretiert werden kann. Die numerische Lösung des Problems mit Hilfe der üblichen Methode der dynamischen Optimierung ist in der Regel zu rechenaufwendig. Es wird deshalb eine Methode der approximativen Lösung des Problems (mit gewissen Einschränkungen) vorgeschlagen, und es werden obere und untere Schranken für den Optimalwert hergeleitet. Ferner wird eine suboptimale Politik mit einer oberen Schranke für die Suboptimalität angegeben. Abschließend wird ein praktisches Anwendungsbeispiel (optimale Versuchsbohrungen nach Öl) diskutiert, an dem auch rechentechnische Aspekte des entwickelten Lösungsverfahrens erläutert werden.

New estimate the bounds for the generalized Lorenz system

The bound of a chaotic system is important for chaos control, chaos synchronization, and other applications. In the present paper, the bounds of the generalized Lorenz system are studied, based on the Lyapunov function theory and the Lagrange multiplier method. We obtain a precise bound for the generalized Lorenz system. The rate of the trajectories is also obtained. Furthermore, we perform the numerical simulations. Analytical approximate solutions for the generalized nonlinear oscillator

He's energy balance method (HEBM) is employed in this article to obtain the analytical approximate solution of the generalized nonlinear oscillator. Existence of periodic solutions is analytically verified and consequently the relationship between the natural frequency and the initial amplitude is obtained in an analytical form. A number of numerical simulations are carried out and accuracy of the HEBM is then examined within an error analysis. The exact values of the natural frequency numerically obtained via the elliptic integrals are taken into account as the references bases and the relative error is then evaluated for a range of oscillation amplitudes. Excellent correlation of the approximate frequencies with the exact ones demonstrates that the approximate solutions are quite consistent even for large amplitudes of oscillation.     

The logarithmic derivative of areally mean p-valent functions

Let denote the class of functions f which are areally mean p-valent and have k maximal growth directions in Δ={z:|z|<1}. In this paper we give an asymptotic formula of the mean square of the logarithmic derivative f′/f for with some restricted condition. This generalizes the corresponding result in [J. Anal. Math. 36 (1979) 36-43]. Also we construct a function which does not satisfy this asymptotic formula.     

A simple proof of logarithmic convexity of extended mean values

In the note, a simple proof is provided for the logarithmic convexity of extended mean values. The second author was partially supported by the China Scholarship Council.
