We present a new result on the geometry of nonhyperelliptic curves; namely, the intersection divisors of a canonically embedded curve C with its osculating spaces at a point P, not considering the intersection at P, can only vary in dimensions given by the Weierstrass semigroup of the curve C at P. We obtain, under a reasonable geometrical hypothesis, monomial bases for the spaces of higher-order regular differentials. We also give a sufficient condition on the Weierstrass semigroup of C at P in order for this geometrical hypothesis to be true. Finally, we give examples of Weierstrass semigroups satisfying this condition. 相似文献

In this note, a modified Second Derivative Test is introduced for the relative extrema of a single variable function. This improved test overcomes the difficulty of the second derivative vanishing at the critical point, while in contrast the traditional test fails for this case. In [R. Craigen, C. Koukouvinos, A theory of ternary complementary pairs, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 96 (2001) 358-375], we proposed a systematic approach to the theory of ternary complementary pairs (TCPs) and showed how all pairs known then could be constructed using a single elementary product, the natural equivalence relations, and a handful of pairs which we called primitive. We also introduced more new primitive pairs than could be inferred previously, concluding with some conjectures reflecting the patterns that were beginning to arise in light of the new approach.In this paper we take what appears to be the natural next step, by investigating these patterns among those lengths and weights that are within easy computational distance from the last length considered therein, length 14. We give complete results up to length 21, and partial results up to length 28. (Ironically, although we proceed analytically by weight first then length, for computational reasons we are bound, in this empirical investigation, to proceed according to length first.)Thus we provide support for the previous conjectures, and shed enough new light to speculate further as to the likely ultimate shape of the theory. Since short term work on TCPs will require massive acquisition of data about small pairs, we also discuss affixes—a computational strategy that arose out of the investigations culminating in this article. 相似文献

We give a geometric proof of a formula, due to Segal and Wilson, which describes the order of vanishing of the Riemann theta function in the direction which corresponds to the direction of the tangent space of a Riemann surface at a marked point. While this formula appears in the work of Segal and Wilson as a by-product of some nontrivial constructions from the theory of integrable systems (loop groups, infinite-dimensional Grassmannians, tau functions, Schur polynomials, etc.) our proof only uses the classical theory of linear systems on Riemann surfaces. 相似文献

We are concerned with interpolation problems in where the values prescribed and the function to be found are both zero-free. More precisely, given a sequence in the unit disk, we ask whether there exists a nontrivial minorant (i.e., a sequence of positive numbers bounded by 1 and tending to 0) such that every interpolation problem has a nonvanishing solution whenever for all . The sequences with this property are completely characterized. Namely, we identify them as `` thin\" sequences, a class that arose earlier in Wolff's work on free interpolation in VMO.
