A single twisted nematic liquid crystal spatial light modulator may suffer from coupled amplitude modulation and a phase modulation capability of less than 2, although almost all panels can achieve . Two twisted nematic liquid crystal panels can be combined in an optical system to produce a total phase modulation of at least 2, and a minimal coupled amplitude modulation. A genetic algorithm is used to optimize the combined modulation characteristics of two liquid crystal panels in a multiplicative architecture. Simulation results and experimental verification are presented which show a substantial reduction in the combined amplitude modulation, and a total phase modulation of 2.  相似文献

This paper modifies the total intensity ratio method (TIRM) used to measure the cell gap of twisted nematic liquid crystal (TNLC) cells. Compared to the conventional TIRM in which a mechanical mechanism is used to physically rotate the polarizer, the modified TIRM methods presented in this study measure the total intensity ratio using a polarization rotation modulator. Two modified measurement methods are introduced. In the first, the saw-tooth signal applied to the electro-optic (EO) modulator is used as a reference signal in order to determine the polarization state of the measured signal. In the second method, a beam splitter and an additional quarter wave plate are added to the optical configuration. The quarter wave plate is adjusted such that a phase-matching condition is obtained between the reference and measured signals. The experimental results confirm that the modified TIRM approaches yield comparable accuracy to the conventional TIRM. Furthermore, in the proposed approaches, sufficient intensity signals to determine the cell gap can be obtained in just 2 s.  相似文献

Holographic data storage applications often use liquid crystal displays as spatial light-amplitude modulators for writing data images. The hologram created in the Fourier plane is usually applied to store the information, since this plane supplies optimal data density. A well known technique for homogenizing the light distribution in the Fourier plane is the application of external random phase modulating masks. The requirement for pixel by pixel matched positioning of the phase modulating mask and the pixels of the spatial light-amplitude modulator is hard to solve in the optical systems and any positioning error leads to significant signal degradations. The article analyses the possibilities of realizing the required simultaneous amplitude and phase modulation of light with the application of a single LCD. Twisted nematic LCDs with different maximal birefringence are numerically investigated using the Jones matrix method. Elliptical incident and exit polarizations are proposed, by which ternary phase-amplitude modulation (+1,–1,0) can be realized. Test measurements are also presented that demonstrate the validity of the calculated results.  相似文献

We present a novel and high accuracy (±1°) technique for measuring the difference in phase delay between the positive and negative eigenvectors of a twisted nematic liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LCSLM) as a function of applied voltage. We show a new architecture for a common-path interferometer where we simultaneously generate both the positive and negative eigenvectors of the LCSLM. We use an electro-optic light modulator to provide a time varying phase shift between the two eigenvectors and measure the phase delay difference between the two eigenvectors. We compare the phase delay values with those obtained using a Mach–Zehnder interferometer and find good agreement.  相似文献

对向列相液晶染料的可调谐激光器进行了光学特性研究. 以650 nm为中 心波长设计了SiO2和TiO2多层膜的一维光子晶体, 以激光染料与向列相液晶的混合物作为增益介质层, 制备了波长可调谐激光器.用Nd: YAG倍频脉冲激光器输出的532 nm激光抽运所制备的激光器样品得出如下光学特性: 激光发射波长随温度调谐范围为605.5---639.8 nm, 达到34.3 nm, 随电压调谐范围为634.5---619.5 nm, 达到15 nm. 发射激光每脉冲的阈值能量为12.3 μJ, 激光线宽小于1 nm.  相似文献

The stationary and the time-dependent homogeneous ordered states in convection may both become unstable against localized perturbations. Defects are then created and they may contribute to the disorganization of the homogeneous state. We present an experimental study of defects in some homogeneous stationary structures as well as in the traveling-wave states of convection of a nematic liquid crystal. We show that the core of the defects is a germ of the unstable state and it can become unstable under the external stress. Then, either fully homogeneous states with the symmetry of the core, or complex disordered states can develop from the local instability of defects in processes quite similar to displacive transitions in solids. Some of the main features are qualitatively similar to numerical simulations of an appropriate Landau-Ginzburg equation.  相似文献

Achieving phase only modulation from a spatial light modulator (SLM) is useful for many optical processing tasks. In this paper, we demonstrate a simple method of decoupling phase and amplitude modulation in a twisted nematic liquid crystal (TNLC) SLM using a double pass technique. Optical compensation film using discotic liquid crystals has been commercialized to suppress light leakage of twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal (LC) cells in the dark state when the viewing directions are off-axes. In the conventional film, the tilt angle variation of the discotic LC layers is linear, whereas that of the rod-like LC layers in the TN cell is non-linear with twist alignment. We investigated the optical compensation effects in terms of iso-contrast ratio, gray scale inversion and color shift with linear and non-linear orientation in a tilt angle or twist and non-twist orientation on TN-LC cells. The results showed that the optical compensation with non-linear orientation exhibited an improved performance in suppressing light leakage in the dark state.  相似文献

基于扭曲向列型液晶空间光调制器的旋光特性, 根据空间光调制器所加电压和加载相位与旋光角度的对应关系, 设计了可以生成多种涡旋矢量光的通用光路. 利用该原理和光路系统, 在实验上生成了多种携带轴对称相位的矢量光以及图案般复杂的矢量光, 观察和检测了它们的偏振特性, 获得了较好的实验结果. 并且模拟了具有涡旋相位的矢量光的紧聚焦场, 分析了它们的紧聚焦特性. 由于这种生成矢量光的方法光路装置简单、操作容易, 产生矢量光的过程中几乎不损失能量, 并且不存在聚焦过程, 因此在如强激光矢量光束与物质相互作用、激光加速等方面具有重要的应用潜力.  相似文献

We studied the structural order in randomly perturbed nematic liquid crystals using a random anisotropic nematic-type lattice model. Simulations were carried out at zero temperature and at various other temperatures, for which we varied the concentration of impurities p, anchoring strength W and imposed external strength fields B at two different histories: temperature-quenched history (TQH) and field-quenched history. The Haller approximation method utilized the temperature dependence of the order parameter to determine the pseudo-critical exponent β at different values of p and W. Consequently, the values of β increased when p and W were increased. Additionally, applying an external field B for investigating the parameters revealed that the TQH established long-range order for high magnitudes of B at zero temperature (T* = 0) and T* = 0.5.  相似文献

流场中介质流与壁面间剪切应力的定量测量,在运动物体例如航天器等的表面流场观测与表面减阻等领域有重要意义.本文采用向列相液晶涂层技术针对介质流与固体壁面间的剪切应力展开定量测量.首先利用液晶弹性变形理论建立了向列相分子在剪切应力场作用下旋光性光强信号与剪切应力大小的定量模型;进而,在固体表面制备了5 CB与7 CB向列相液晶涂层,采用搭建的实验装置对不同剪切应力场下的测试涂层的光强进行了测试与理论模型的计算模拟,测试结果与定量模型相当吻合;进一步探讨了液晶涂层测试技术的极限剪切应力、灵敏范围以及涂层膜厚、分子弹性等关键影响因素.  相似文献

We report a method for the measurement of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) cell parameters i.e., switching voltage, birefringence, retardation, dielectric anisotropy, average tilt angle and change in refractive index with applied DC voltage to LC material. The proposed method is based on optical interferometry and Fourier transform fringe analysis technique, in which we obtain 2-dimensional (2D) phase map of the interferograms as a function of applied voltage. Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) was used for the study of cell parameters and interferograms were recorded at different applied DC voltages to NLC cell using CCD camera. From the phase map, 2D-refractive index distribution of the LC cell with applied voltage was reconstructed. Analytical equations are derived based on optical interferometry and then solved to obtain cell parameters. The present method is fast and can give 2D-cell parameters from only two quick interferograms.  相似文献

We study numerically the director and orientational order parameter configurations in a nematic liquid crystal around a two-dimensional spherical particle on the basis of the tensor order parameter formalism. To properly account for the large length scale difference between the particle and the accompanying orientational defect, we devise an adaptive grid scheme in which the lattice spacing is automatically and locally adjusted in response to the spatial gradient of the orientational order parameter. This adaptive grid scheme is useful in studying dynamical as well as static orientational structures. We present a simulation result which shows how a hedgehog defect of topological charge -1 becomes unstable in two dimensions, and splits into a defect pair of topological charge -1/2, located symmetrically around the particle. The finite-difference time-domain method is used to simulate the optical characteristics of an in-plane switching blue phase liquid crystal display.Compared with the matrix optic methods and the refractive method,the finite-difference timedomain method,which is used to directly solve Maxwell's equations,can consider the lateral variation of the refractive index and obtain an accurate convergence effect.The simulation results show that e-rays and o-rays bend in different directions when the in-plane switching blue phase liquid crystal display is driven by the operating voltage.The finitedifference time-domain method should be used when the distribution of the liquid crystal in the liquid crystal display has a large lateral change.  相似文献
