Controlled polystyrenes with different molar mass values were synthesized starting from benzoyl peroxide and TEMPO (2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy). The polystyrene homopolymers served as initiators for the block copolymerization of phthalimide methylstyrene (PIMS) to synthesize polystyrene‐b‐poly(PIMS) diblock copolymers. Diblock copolymers with well defined structures as well as controlled and narrow molar mass distribution were obtained from the lower‐mass polystyrene homopolymers. The lower‐mass copolymers were found to be active as initiators in the synthesis of the polystyrene‐b‐poly(PIMS)‐b‐polystyrene triblock copolymers. In each reaction step, the effects of conversion and reaction time on the molar mass characteristics of the prepared block copolymers were investigated. The diblock and triblock copolymers were modified using hydrazine as the reagent in order to obtain the corresponding functional amino block copolymers. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) of biomass‐based acrylates, (S )‐ and (R )‐2‐isopropyl‐5‐methylene‐1,3‐dioxolan‐4‐ones (S‐MiPDO and R‐MiPDO), was successfully performed to produce a well‐defined polymer with simultaneously controlled tacticity and molecular weight, and low dispersity (? < 1.3). In particular, meso triad (mm ) of the polymer was continuously controlled as designed from 28.1% to about 100% by changing the molar ratio of S‐MiPDO/R‐MiPDO in feed. In kinetic studies, the rate of RDRP was strongly influenced by the stereostructures of the propagating radical, and it was much lower in isospecific RDRP than atactic one in reversible chain transfer catalyzed polymerization (RTCP) in contrast to atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) where the rate would not change regardless of the tacticity. Increase of molecular weight and low ? of the polymer were also observed in reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of MiPDO. In addition, block copolymers including stereoblock copolymers were feasibly synthesized by RTCP of styrene and methyl methacrylate using poly(MiPDO) prepolymer. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. This work reports the use of cocatalysts in addition to “smart” ruthenium catalysts for Ru‐mediated reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) in miniemulsion, allowing for the synthesis of final products with significantly reduced residual metal. Using amine cocatalysts in miniemulsion allows for high conversions (> 90%) in under 10 h. Two forms of ferrocene cocatalysts are also used, including “smart” thermoresponsive PEGylated ferrocene derivatives (FcPEG) and ferrocene containing surfactants (FcTMA). Using “smart” thermoresponsive cocatalyst at low concentrations, rate enhancements in BMA and BzMA polymerizations are observed, with good catalyst removability. Using the FcTMA cocatalyst surfactant, increasing monomer hydrophobicity is shown to increase the polymerization rate and initiator efficiency. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A synthetic method for the production of polyethylene (PE) chains carrying alkoxyamine end‐group has been proposed first by successfully reacting the well‐known 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐N‐oxyl (TEMPO) and N‐(2‐methyl‐2‐propyl)‐N‐(1‐diethylphosphono‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl)‐N‐oxyl (commonly called SG1) stable radicals with dipolyethylenylmagnesium compounds to give PE‐TEMPO and PE‐SG1. Since the homolytic cleavage of these two macroalkoxyamines for the production of block copolymers using controlled radical polymerization would require temperatures higher than 160 °C, two original new nitroxides (4‐[(2,2‐dimethyl‐4‐(Ntert‐Butyl‐N‐(1‐diethoxyphosphoryl‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl)aminoxy)‐4‐n‐butoxycarbonyl)butanoyloxyl]‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy, DD1) and 4‐[(2,2‐dimethyl‐4‐(Ntert‐Butyl‐N‐(1‐diethoxyphosphoryl‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl)aminoxy)‐4‐phenyl) butanoyloxyl]‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy, DD2) containing a TEMPO moiety and incorporating an SG1‐based alkoxyamine (cleavage temperature: 60 °C) were then synthesized. NMR analyses showed that the resulting PE‐DD1 and PE‐DD2 were obtained using this functionalization strategy though with low to moderate yields (from 17% to 40%). PE‐DD2 (40% functionalization) was used under controlled radical polymerization conditions of n‐butyl acrylate. SEC analyses together with 1H NMR analysis showed that a poly(ethylene‐bn‐butyl acrylate) block copolymer was produced and that the polymerization proceeded under control. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Azo-containing polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) obtained by cationic polymerization was used as a macroinitiator in the reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) of styrene and methyl acrylate in conjunction with CuCl2/2,2′-bipyridine as a catalyst. Diblock PTHF–polystyrene and PTHF–poly(methyl acrylate) were obtained after a two-step process. In the first step of the reaction, stable chlorine-end-capped PTHF was formed with the thermolysis of azo-linked PTHF at 65–70 °C in the presence of the catalyst. Heating the system at temperatures of 100–110 °C started the polymerization of the second monomer, which resulted in the formation of block copolymers. The decomposition behavior of the azo-linked PTHF and the structure of the block copolymers were determined by 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Kinetic studies and GPC analyses further confirmed the controlled/living nature of the RATRP initiated by the polymeric radicals. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Various copper‐based catalyst systems and reaction conditions were studied in the graft copolymerization of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMAam) with a cellulose‐based macroinitiator by controlled radical polymerization. The cellulose macroinitiator with degree of substitution DS = 0.44 was synthesized from dissolving softwood pulp in a LiCl/DMAc solution. The graft copolymerizations of DMAam, using the cellulose macroinitiator and various copper‐based catalyst systems, were then carried out in DMSO solutions. The copolymerization kinetics was followed by 1H NMR. Water‐soluble cellulose‐g‐PDMAam copolymers were comprehensively characterized by ATR‐FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopies and SEC analyses. DLS and steady‐shear viscosity measurements revealed that when the DPgraft of the cellulose‐g‐PDMAam copolymer is high enough, the copolymer forms a more compact structure in water. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A stable nitroxyl radical functionalized with an initiating group for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), 4‐(2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyloxy)‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy (Br‐TEMPO), was synthesized by the reaction of 4‐hydroxyl‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy with 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl bromide. Stable free radical polymerization of styrene was then carried out using a conventional thermal initiator, dibenzoyl peroxide, along with Br‐TEMPO. The obtained polystyrene had an active bromine atom for ATRP at the ω‐end of the chain and was used as the macroinitiator for ATRP of methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate to prepare block copolymers. The molecular weights of the resulting block copolymers at different monomer conversions shifted to higher molecular weights and increased with monomer conversion. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The cobalt-mediated radical polymerization of vinyl acetate was extended to copolymerization with 1-alkenes (ethylene or 1-octene). In agreement with the low amount of 1-alkene that could be incorporated into the copolymer, a gradient structure was predictable, but a rather low polydispersity was observed. A poly(vinyl acetate)-b-poly(octene) copolymer was also successfully synthesized, leading to a poly (vinyl alcohol)-b-poly(octene) amphiphilic copolymer upon the methanolysis of the poly (vinyl acetate) block. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABCBA‐type pentablock copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA), styrene (S), and isobutylene (IB) were prepared by a three‐step synthesis, which included atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and cationic polymerization: (1) poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with terminal chlorine atoms was prepared by ATRP initiated with an aromatic difunctional initiator bearing two trichloromethyl groups under CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine catalysis; (2) PMMA with the same catalyst was used for ATRP of styrene, which produced a poly(S‐b‐MMA‐b‐S) triblock copolymer; and (3) IB was polymerized cationically in the presence of the aforementioned triblock copolymer and BCl3, and this produced a poly(IB‐b‐S‐b‐MMA‐b‐S‐b‐IB) pentablock copolymer. The reaction temperature, varied from ?78 to ?25 °C, significantly affected the IB content in the product; the highest was obtained at ?25 °C. The formation of a pentablock copolymer with a narrow molecular weight distribution provided direct evidence of the presence of active chlorine at the ends of the poly(S‐b‐MMA‐b‐S) triblock copolymer, capable of the initiation of the cationic polymerization of IB in the presence of BCl3. A differential scanning calorimetry trace of the pentablock copolymer (20.1 mol % IB) showed the glass‐transition temperatures of three segregated domains, that is, polyisobutylene (?87.4 °C), polystyrene (95.6 °C), and PMMA (103.7 °C) blocks. One glass‐transition temperature (104.5 °C) was observed for the aforementioned triblock copolymer. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 6098–6108, 2004  相似文献

A well‐defined and monofunctional poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐based (P3HT) macroinitiator has been obtained through a clean, simple, and an efficient multistep synthesis process. The macroinitiator is obtained via intermolecular radical 1,2‐addition onto an ω‐acrylate‐terminated P3HT macromonomer. In a second step, well‐defined rod‐coil block copolymers were obtained by nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) using the so‐called Blocbuilder®. The polymerization was found to be controlled with various monomers such as styrene, isoprene, 4‐vinylpyridine, or methyl acrylate. This process constitutes a very promising way to obtain versatile and clean materials for organic electronics. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Novel reversible networks utilizing photodimerization of crosslinkable anthracene groups and thermal dissociation were investigated. Reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization yielded well‐defined copolymers with 9‐anthrylmethyl methacrylate (AMMA) and other alkyl methacrylates such as methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2‐ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA) having different AMMA compositions. Well‐controlled block copolymerization of AMMA and alkyl methacrylates was also successfully accomplished using a trithiocarbonate‐terminated poly(alkyl methacrylate) macro‐chain transfer agent. The anthracene‐containing copolymers showed reversibility via crosslinking based on photodimerization with ultraviolet irradiation and subsequent thermal dissociation. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Controlled and very rapid ambient temperature polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and single electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) conditions is reported. Two initiators, one that would generate a secondary radical and another that would generate a primary radical, upon activation, are used. A very active catalyst CuBr/Me6TREN was found to initiate rapid polymerization whether it was the primary or the secondary initiator. The polymerization was well controlled and very rapid. The initiator that produces secondary initiating site is found to result in more rapid polymerization than the one that produces primary initiating site. To explore the possibility of rapid ambient temperature polymerization through the SET‐LRP mechanism, the polymerization was also carried out in the presence of DMSO. It was found that the polymerization was much faster compared to the bulk ATRP, without loss of control. Styrene was block copolymerized from PtBA macroinitiators and vice versa. In both the cases, block copolymers with controlled molecular weights were obtained. The tBA block of the polymer was selectively hydrolyzed to get amphiphilic block copolymers. This amphiphilic block copolymer was found to be useful in preparing stable cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticulate dispersion. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two kinds of Schiff base, N,N′‐dibenzylidene‐1,2‐diaminoethane (NDBE) and N,N′‐disalicylidene‐1,2‐diaminoethane, have been found as efficient organic catalyst for reversible complexation‐mediated radical polymerization (RCMP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) for the first time. The polymerization results show obvious features of “living”/controlled radical polymerization. Well‐defined and low‐polydispersity polymers (Mw/Mn = 1.20–1.40) are obtained in RCMP of MMA catalyzed by Schiff base at mild temperature (65–80°C). Moreover, Schiff base also exhibits a particularly high reactivity for RCMP of MMA with in situ formed alkyl iodide initiator. The polymer molecular weight and its polydispersity (Mw/Mn is around 1.20) are well controlled even with high monomer conversion. Notably, when the dosage of azo initiator is same as the dosage of iodine, the polymerization could also be realized in the presence of NDBE. The living feature of synthesized polymer is confirmed through the chain extension experiment. In short, Schiff base is a kind of high‐efficient catalyst for RCMP and reverse RCMP of MMA, which can be one of the most powerful and robust techniques for polymer synthesis. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The controlled free‐radical polymerization of styrene and chloromethylstyrene monomers in the presence of 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxyl (TEMPO) has been studied with the aim of synthesizing block copolymers with well‐defined structures. First, TEMPO‐capped poly(chloromethylstyrene) was prepared. Among several initiating systems [self‐initiation, dicumyl peroxide, and 2,2′‐azobis(isobutyronitrile)], the last offered the best compromise for obtaining a good control of the polymerization and a fast polymerization rate. The rate of the TEMPO‐mediated polymerization of chloromethylstyrene was independent of the initial concentration of TEMPO but unexpectedly higher than the rate of the thermal self‐initiated polymerization of chloromethylstyrene. Transfer reactions to the chloromethyl groups were thought to play an important role in the polymerization kinetics and the polydispersity index of the resulting poly(chloromethylstyrene). Second, this first block was used as a macroinitiator in the polymerization of styrene to obtain the desired poly(chloromethylstyrene‐b‐styrene) block copolymer. The kinetic modeling of the block copolymerization was in good agreement with experimental data. The block copolymers obtained in this work exhibited a low polydispersity index (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.5) and could be chemically modified with nucleophilic substitution reactions on the benzylic site, opening the way to a great variety of architectures. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Well‐defined sulfonated polystyrene and block copolymers with n‐butyl acrylate (nBA) were synthesized by CuBr catalyzed living radical polymerization. Neopentyl p‐styrene sulfonate (NSS) was polymerized with ethyl‐2‐bromopropionate initiator and CuBr catalyst with N,N,N′,N′‐pentamethylethyleneamine to give poly(NSS) (PNSS) with a narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD < 1.12). PNSS was then acidified by thermolysis resulting in a polystyrene backbone with 100% sulfonic acid groups. Random copolymers of NSS and styrene with various composition ratios were also synthesized by copolymerization of NSS and styrene with different feed ratios (MWD < 1.11). Well defined block copolymers with nBA were synthesized by sequential polymerization of NSS from a poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PnBA) precursor using CuBr catalyzed living radical polymerization (MWD < 1.29). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel side‐chain liquid crystalline ABC triblock copolymers composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), polystyrene (PS), and poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] (PMMAZO) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using CuBr/1,1,4,7,7‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as a catalyst system. First, the bromine‐terminated diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene (PEO‐PS‐Br) was prepared by the ATRP of styrene initiated with the macro‐initiator PEO‐Br, which was obtained from the esterification of PEO and 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl bromide. An azobenzene‐containing block of PMMAZO with different molecular weights was then introduced into the diblock copolymer by a second ATRP to synthesize the novel side‐chain liquid crystalline ABC triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene‐block‐poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] (PEO‐PS‐PMMAZO). These block copolymers were characterized using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and gel permeation chromatograph (GPC). Their thermotropic phase behaviors were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscope (POM). These triblock copolymers exhibited a smectic phase and a nematic phase over a relatively wide temperature range. At the same time, the photoresponsive properties of these triblock copolymers in chloroform solution were preliminarily studied. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dispersants play a significant role in the formulation of positive battery slurry. Adding a small amount of dispersant can effectively reduce the viscosity of the slurry, which is beneficial for the production of positive batteries. A series of copolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA) with different molar ratios of NVP to 2-EHA, different polymer molecular weights and different polymer structures are synthesized by dl -methionine-mediated reversible deactivation radical polymerization. The ability of these copolymers to disperse LiFePO4 battery positive slurry with a high solid content (57.08%) as dispersants has been evaluated. Research shows that when the ratio of NVP to 2-EHA is 20 and the polymer molecular weight is 6000, poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone-ran-2-ethylhexyl acrylate) (NVP-ran-2-EHA) exhibits the strongest dispersing ability to the slurry. This polymer can reduce the viscosity of the slurry by 43.925% and has the longest stabilization time of 3 h, which is better than poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) and poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)-block-poly(2-ethylhexyl acrylate) (PVP-b-PEHA) with the same molecular weight.  相似文献

Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is one of the most popular advanced polymerization techniques in macromolecular science, allowing the synthesis of tailor-made polymers with controlled molecular weight, architecture, composition, and functionality. The combination of ATRP and ring-opening polymerization (ROP) provides a straightforward route for the preparation of polymers exhibiting both targeted and well-defined features and biodegradability, which is very interesting for the development of new materials for biomedical applications. Among the different types of polymer architectures, amphiphilic star block copolymers (BCPs) represent a very attractive one, due to their high degree of functionality at the molecular surface, low hydrodynamic volume and higher encapsulation ability, compared to molecular systems based on linear polymers. This review article highlights the research focused on the synthesis of amphiphilic well-defined degradable star BCPs by combination of ROP and ATRP, with particular focus on the development of polymers for biomedical applications, such as anticancer drug delivery, diagnosis therapy, or photodynamic therapy, which is the most investigated field regarding these polymers.  相似文献
