Numerical and experimental methods were used to explore temperature and pressure distributions inside an irregularly-shaped cavity of a novel three-dimensional space environment simulator (SES) system. In order to obtain better temperature and pressure distributions, a plenum chamber and airflow diffusion perforated plate were adopted. Three-dimensional heat and mass transfer characteristics were analyzed using the Standard kε turbulence model. Simulation results revealed that the temperature and pressure distributions were greatly improved with improved diffusion configuration design, the temperature gradient decreased from 5 K to 1 K, and the pressure gradient decreased to 0.5% of the former value. Based on the simulation results, an improved experimental system for simulating space environment was set up. This experiment system could supply airflow with temperature ranging from 193 K to 353 K for simulating the real space environment. Experimental results showed that the temperature and pressure fields had smaller gradients across the surface and the inner cavity, which agreed considerably with the numerical results. The results of this study present useful information for the design of similar cavity structure.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were carried out to study the effects of sand particles on circular sand–water wall jets. Mean and turbulence characteristics of sand particles in the sand–water wall jets were measured for different sand concentrations co ranging from 0.5% to 2.5%. Effects of sand particle size on the centerline sand velocity of the jets were evaluated for sand size ranging from 0.21 mm to 0.54 mm. Interesting results with the range of measurements are presented in this paper. It was found that the centerline sand velocity of the wall jets with larger particle size were 15% higher than the jets with smaller particle size. Concentration profiles in the vertical direction showed a peak value at x/d = 5 (where x is the longitudinal distance from the nozzle and d is the nozzle diameter) and the sand concentration decreased linearly for x/d > 5. Experimental results showed that the turbulence level enhanced from the nozzle to x/d = 10. For sand–water wall jets with a higher concentration (co = 1.5–2.5%), the turbulence intensity became smaller than the corresponding single-phase wall jets by 34% due to turbulent modulation. A modified logarithmic formulation was introduced to model the longitudinal turbulent intensity at the centerline and along the axis of the jet.  相似文献

Large-eddy simulations of flow past a two-dimensional (2D) block were performed to evaluate four subgrid-scale (SGS) models: (i) the traditional Smagorinsky model, (ii) the Lagrangian dynamic model, (iii) the Lagrangian scale-dependent dynamic model, and (iv) the modulated gradient model. An immersed boundary method was employed to simulate the 2D block boundaries on a uniform Cartesian grid. The sensitivity of the simulation results to grid refinement was investigated by using four different grid resolutions. The velocity streamlines and the vertical profiles of the mean velocities and variances were compared with experimental results. The modulated gradient model shows the best overall agreement with the experimental results among the four SGS models. In particular, the flow recirculation, the reattachment position and the vertical profiles are accurately reproduced with a relative coarse grid resolution of (Nx × Ny × Nz=) 160 × 40 × 160 (nx × nz = 13 × 16 covering the block). Besides the modulated gradient model, the Lagrangian scale-dependent dynamic model is also able to give reasonable prediction of the flow statistics with some discrepancies compared with the experimental results. Relatively poor performance by the Lagrangian dynamic model and the Smagorinsky model is observed, with simulated recirculating patterns that differ from the measured ones. Analysis of the turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) budget in this flow shows evidence of a strong production of TKE in the shear layer that forms as the flow is deflected around the block.  相似文献

An experimental study using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) on free jets issuing from different orifice plate (OP) nozzles is reported. Mean velocity, turbulence intensity and higher order profiles relevant for large and small scale mixing are considered in the near field and interaction zone (0 < X/D < 20). This is done to determine mixing enhancement due to rectangular, squared, elliptic and triangular nozzles in comparison to circular nozzle results in two orthogonal planes. The effect of Reynolds number on the differences among the nozzle shapes is also considered by performing measurements just after laminar–turbulent transition (Re = 8000) and in the fully turbulent regime (Re = 35,000). The results at low Reynolds number show two classes of jets, i.e. at one side, those closer to axial-symmetric conditions, as circular, square and triangular jets, whereas on the other side those with elongated nozzles as rectangular and elliptic. The reason for the different behavior of the latter is connected to the phenomenon of axis-switching which allows a rearrangement of turbulence over the different velocity components and directions. However, for the highest Reynolds number investigated, all nozzles show similar behavior especially in the jet far field (X/D > 10), thus suggesting a significant Reynolds number dependence of the results.  相似文献

A downward flow of glass bead particles in a vertical pipe is investigated using a two-component LDV/PDPA for a range of Re (6400 < Re < 24,000) and a constant particle loading (m = 0.7). Two particle sizes of 70 and 200 μm are considered in the present work. For the 70 μm particles, the presence of the particles dampens the gas-phase turbulence intensity at the lowest value of Re investigated (8300) compared with the single-phase flow at the same Re. As Re increases, the gas turbulence increases, and for Re > 13,800 the gas turbulence is enhanced compared with the single-phase flow at the same Re. For the 200 μm particles, the intensity also increases with Re and is enhanced for all values of Re investigated, except at the lowest value of Re investigated (6400). At this value, the gas turbulence is equal to that of single-phase flow at the same Re. The observed trend in the gas-phase turbulence modulation with Re is proposed to be due to the change in the segregation patterns and in the average volume fractions of the particles with increasing Re. More importantly, the present experimental results suggest that, consideration of either the gas and particle characteristic length scales or the particle Reynolds number solely is insufficient to predict gas-phase turbulence modulation in gas–particle flows.  相似文献

The paper presents average flow visualizations and measurements, obtained with the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique, of a submerged rectangular free jet of air in the range of Reynolds numbers from Re = 35,300 to Re = 2200, where the Reynolds number is defined according to the hydraulic diameter of a rectangular slot of height H. According to the literature, just after the exit of the jet there is a zone of flow, called zone of flow establishment, containing the region of mixing fluid, at the border with the stagnant fluid, and the potential core, where velocity on the centerline maintains a value almost equal to the exit one. After this zone is present the zone of established flow or fully developed region. The goal of the paper is to show, with average PIV visualizations and measurements, that, before the zone of flow establishment is present a region of flow, never mentioned by the literature and called undisturbed region of flow, with a length, LU, which decreases with the increase of the Reynolds number. The main characteristics of the undisturbed region is the fact that the velocity profile maintains almost equal to the exit one, and can also be identified by a constant height of the average PIV visualizations, with length, LCH, or by a constant turbulence on the centerline, with length LCT. The average PIV velocity and turbulence measurements are compared to those performed with the Hot Film Anemometry (HFA) technique. The average PIV visualizations show that the region of constant height has a length LCH which increases from LCH = H at Re = 35,300 to LCH = 45H at Re = 2200. The PIV measurements on the centerline of the jet show that turbulence remains constant at the level of the exit for a length, LCT, which increases from LCT = H at Re = 35,300 to LCT = 45H at Re = 2200. The PIV measurements show that velocity remains constant at the exit level for a length, LU, which increases from LU = H at Re = 35,300 to LU = 6H at Re = 2200 and is called undisturbed region of flow. In turbulent flow the length LU is almost equal to the lengths of the regions of constant height, LCH, and constant turbulence, LCT. In laminar flow, Re = 2200, the length of the undisturbed region of flow, LU, is greater than the lengths of the regions of constant height and turbulence, LCT = LCH = 45H. The average PIV and HFA velocity measurements confirm that the length of potential core, LP, increases from LP = 45H at Re = 35,300 to LP = 78H at Re = 2200, and are compared to the previous experimental and theoretical results of the literature in the zone of mixing fluid and in the fully developed region with a good agreement.  相似文献

The effect of solid particles on the flow characteristics of axisymmetric turbulent coaxial jets for two flow conditions was studied. Simultaneous measurements of size and velocity distributions of continuous and dispersed phases in a two-phase flow are presented using a Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA) technique. Spherical glass particles with a particle diameter range from 102 to 212 μm were used in this two-phase flow, the experimental results indicate a significant influence of the solid particles and the Re on the flow characteristics. The data show that the gas phase has lower mean velocity in the near-injector region and a higher mean velocity at the developed region. Near the injector at low Reynolds number (Re = 2839) the presence of the particles dampens the gas-phase turbulence, while at higher Reynolds number (Re = 11 893) the gas-phase turbulence and the velocity fluctuation of particle-laden jets are increased. The particle velocity at higher Reynolds number (Re = 11 893) and is lower at lower Reynolds number (Re = 2839). The slip velocity between particles and gas phase existed over the flow domain was examined. More importantly, the present experiment results suggest that, consideration of the gas characteristic length scales is insufficient to predict gas-phase turbulence modulation in gas-particle flows.  相似文献

The Large Eddy Simulation model was introduced to study the micro spray characteristics under ultra-high injection pressure (>220 MPa). EFS8400 spray test platform was set up to verify the accuracy of the numerical model. The mechanisms of micro spray characteristics were studied intensively under different injection pressures (180 MPa, 240 MPa) and nozzle diameters (0.1 mm, 0.16 mm). The results indicated that the micro turbulence vortex structures can be captured, especially in the liquid spray core area. Large Eddy Simulation model combined with the small grid size of 0.25 mm show a huge advantage in studying the micro spray characteristics under ultra-high injection pressure; The turbulence vorticity and spray velocity for injection pressure of 240 MPa are more intensive than that of 180 MPa, and also the ultra-high injection pressure can contribute to strong turbulence disturbance between spray and surrounding air, which is helpful to improve the quality of spray; The spray velocity field extended wider for the diameter of 0.16 mm, and also the values of velocity in the spray center is higher than that of the diameter of 0.1 mm; The entrainment vortex appeared at the edge of the large velocity gradient between spray and surrounding air, and the higher velocity gradient for ultra-high injection pressure (240 MPa) between the spray and air is easier to increase the generation of entrainment vortex in the downstream of the spray, which can significantly increase the quality of spray and atomization.  相似文献

Experiments were performed on spout characteristics of a cylindrical spout-fluidized bed (I.D. = 10 cm) with different static heights and two materials (Al2O3 and high density polyethylene). Results of minimum spouting velocity obtained in this study were compared with reported correlations for both spouted and spout-fluidized beds. Considerable discrepancies were found between the values obtained using different model equations as well as with respect to experimental results. Based on the Mathur–Gishler correlation, a new correlation is proposed for calculating the minimum spouting velocity that introduces the ratio U/Umf. It was found that the minimum spouting velocity decreases with increasing fluidizing gas velocity (U/Umf). The pressure drop at the point of minimum spouting velocity is also correlated using this dimensionless group and is presented in this work. This investigation demonstrates that the use of correlations reported in the literature that focus primarily on conical bottom spouted beds are not applicable to flat-bottom spouted and spout-fluidized beds.  相似文献

Oscillating boundary layer flow over an infinite flat plate at rest was simulated using the kkLω turbulence model for a Reynolds number range of 32  Reδ  10,000 ranging from fully laminar flow to fully turbulent flow. The kkLω model was validated by comparing the predictions with LES results and experimental results for intermittently turbulent and fully turbulent flow regimes. The good agreement obtained between the kkLω model prediction with the experimental and LES results indicate that the kkLω model is able to accurately simulate transient intermittently turbulent flow and as well as accurately predict the onset of turbulence for such oscillatory flows.  相似文献

An experimental study of a fully developed turbulent channel flow and an adverse pressure gradient (APG) turbulent channel flow over smooth and rough walls has been performed using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The rough walls comprised two-dimensional square ribs of nominal height, k = 3 mm and pitch, p = 2k, 4k and 8k. It was observed that rib roughness enhanced the drag characteristics, and the degree of enhancement increased with increasing pitch. Similarly, rib roughness significantly increased the level of turbulence production, Reynolds stresses and wall-normal transport of turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress well beyond the roughness sublayer. On the contrary, the distributions of the eddy viscosity, mixing length and streamwise transport of turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were reduced by wall roughness, especially in the outer layer. Adverse pressure gradient produced a further reduction in the mean velocity (in comparison to the results obtained in the parallel section) but increased the wall-normal extent across which the mean flow above the ribs is spatially inhomogeneous in the streamwise direction. APG also reinforced wall roughness in augmenting the equivalent sand grain roughness height. The combination of wall roughness and APG significantly increased turbulence production and Reynolds stresses except in the immediate vicinity of the rough walls. The transport velocities of the turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were also augmented by APG across most part of the rough-wall boundary layer. Further, APG enhanced the distributions of the eddy viscosity across most of the boundary layer but reduced the mixing length outside the roughness sublayer.  相似文献

Delineation of mini- and micro-scale channels with respect to two-phase flow has been the subject of many research papers. There is no consensus on when the small channel can be characterized as a mini-channel or micro-channel. The idea proposed by this paper is to use the normalized bubble nose radius, liquid film thickness top over bottom ratio, and bubble shape contour, which are found under normal gravity conditions in slug flow through a horizontal adiabatic channel, as the delineation criteria. The input parameters are bubble nose radius and bubble nose velocity as the characteristic length scale and characteristic velocity scale respectively. 3D numerical simulation with ANSYS FLUENT was used to obtain the necessary data. Following CFD practice, a mesh independence study and a numerical model validation against published experimental data were both conducted. Analysis of the numerical simulation results showed that channels with D  100 μm can be characterized as a micro-system, while channels with D  400 μm belong to mini-systems. The region 200 μm  D  300 μm represents a transition from the micro-scale to mini-scale.  相似文献

The qualities of a DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) and a PANS (Partially-Averaged Navier–Stokes) hybrid RANS/LES model, both based on the kω RANS turbulence model of Wilcox (2008, “Formulation of the kω turbulence model revisited” AIAA J., 46: 2823–2838), are analysed for simulation of plane impinging jets at a high nozzle-plate distance (H/B = 10, Re = 13,500; H is nozzle-plate distance, B is slot width; Reynolds number based on slot width and maximum velocity at nozzle exit) and a low nozzle-plate distance (H/B = 4, Re = 20,000). The mean velocity field, fluctuating velocity components, Reynolds stresses and skin friction at the impingement plate are compared with experimental data and LES (Large Eddy Simulation) results. The kω DES model is a double substitution type, following Davidson and Peng (2003, “Hybrid LES–RANS modelling: a one-equation SGS model combined with a kω model for predicting recirculating flows” Int. J. Numer. Meth. Fluids, 43: 1003–1018). This means that the turbulent length scale is replaced by the grid size in the destruction term of the k-equation and in the eddy viscosity formula. The kω PANS model is derived following Girimaji (2006, “Partially-Averaged Navier–Stokes model for turbulence: a Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes to Direct Numerical Simulation bridging method” J. Appl. Mech., 73: 413–421). The turbulent length scale in the PANS model is constructed from the total turbulent kinetic energy and the sub-filter dissipation rate. Both hybrid models change between RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes) and LES based on the cube root of the cell volume. The hybrid techniques, in contrast to RANS, are able to reproduce the turbulent flow dynamics in the shear layers of the impacting jet. The change from RANS to LES is much slower however for the PANS model than for the DES model on fine enough grids. This delays the break-up process of the vortices generated in the shear layers with as a consequence that the DES model produces better results than the PANS model.  相似文献

Results of simulations of the flow around a rudimentary landing gear are presented in the paper. A newly proposed improved Partially-Averaged Navier–Stokes (PANS) method using k  ε  ζ  f turbulence model is used for prediction of the flow. The results are compared with the experimental data but also with the results of two LES simulations performed using the PANS computational grids. PANS simulations predicted the flow in good agreement with the experimental data. LES predicted a non-physical creation of separation over the front wheels that does not exist in the PANS prediction and was not observed in the experimental oil film. PANS simulations showed low sensitivity to the grid refinement. They show clear advantage compared with the LES simulations when the computational grid is inadequate for resolution of the near-wall flow structures.  相似文献

Fully-developed turbulent flow in a concentric annulus, r1/r2 = 0.5, Reh = 12,500, with the outer wall rotating at a range of rotation rates N = Uθ,wall/Ub from 0.5 up to 4 is studied by large-eddy simulations. The focus is on the effects of moderate to very high rotation rates on the mean flow, turbulence statistics and eddy structure. For N up to ∼2, an increase in the rotation rate dampens progressively the turbulence near the rotating outer wall, while affecting only mildly the inner-wall region. At higher rotation rates this trend is reversed: for N = 2.8 close to the inner wall turbulence is dramatically reduced while the outer wall region remains turbulent with discernible helical vortices as the dominant turbulent structure. The turbulence parameters and eddy structures differ significantly for N = 2 and 2.8. This switch is attributed to the centrifuged turbulence (generated near the inner wall) prevailing over the axial inertial force as well as over the counteracting laminarizing effects of the rotating outer wall. At still higher rotation, N = 4, the flow gets laminarized but with distinct spiralling vortices akin to the Taylor–Couette rolls found between the two counter-rotating cylinders without axial flow, which is the limiting case when N approaches to infinity. The ratio of the centrifugal to axial inertial forces, Ta/Re2  N2 (where Ta is the Taylor number) is considered as a possible criterion for defining the conditions for the above regime change.  相似文献

This work aims at investigating the mechanisms of separation and the transition to turbulence in the separated shear-layer of aerodynamic profiles, while at the same time to gain insight into coherent structures formed in the separated zone at low-to-moderate Reynolds numbers. To do this, direct numerical simulations of the flow past a NACA0012 airfoil at Reynolds numbers Re = 50,000 (based on the free-stream velocity and the airfoil chord) and angles of attack AOA = 9.25° and AOA = 12° have been carried out. At low-to-moderate Reynolds numbers, NACA0012 exhibits a combination of leading-edge/trailing-edge stall which causes the massive separation of the flow on the suction side of the airfoil. The initially laminar shear layer undergoes transition to turbulence and vortices formed are shed forming a von Kármán like vortex street in the airfoil wake. The main characteristics of this flow together with its main features, including power spectra of a set of selected monitoring probes at different positions on the suction side and in the wake of the airfoil are provided and discussed in detail.  相似文献

The effects of freestream turbulence intensity and integral length scale as freestream turbulent parameters on the drag coefficient of a sphere were experimentally investigated in a closed circuit wind tunnel. The Reynolds number, Re = Ud/ν, was varied from 2.2 × 104 to 8 × 104 by using spheres with diameter d of 20, 51 and 102 mm in addition to altering the freestream velocity, U. The freestream turbulence intensity Tu and flow integral length scale Λ were manipulated by the utilization of orifice perforated plates. The proper combination of orifice perforated plate hole diameter, sphere size, and sphere location along the center line of the wind tunnel enabled the independent alterations of turbulence intensity and relative integral length scale (Λ/d) from 1.8% to 10.7% and from 0.1 to 2.6, respectively, at each studied Reynolds number. Results show that over the range of conditions studied, the drag always decreases with increasing Tu and, the critical Reynolds number at which the drag coefficient is dramatically reduced is decreased by increasing Tu. Most interestingly, the drag at any particular Re and Tu may be significantly lowered by reducing Λ/d; this is particularly the case at high Re and Tu.  相似文献

This paper presents and analyzes the behaviour of TRIP 1000 steel sheets subjected to low velocity perforation by conical projectiles. The relevance of this material resides in the potential transformation of retained austenite to martensite during impact loading. This process leads to an increase in strength and ductility of the material. However, this transformation takes place only under certain loading conditions strongly dependent on the initial temperature and deformation rate. In order to study the material behaviour under impact loading, perforation tests have been performed using a drop weight tower. Experiments were carried out at two different initial temperatures T0 = 213 K and T0 = 288 K, and within the range of impact velocities 2.5 m/s ? V0 ? 4.5 m/s. The experimental setup enabled the measuring of impact velocity, residual velocity, load-time history and failure mode. In addition, dry and lubricated contacts between the striker and the plate have been investigated. Finally, by using X-ray diffraction it has been shown that no martensitic transformation takes place during the perforation process. The causes involving the none-appearance of martensite are examined.  相似文献

Internal gas velocity fluctuations and their effects on the mist diffusion process were examined in a long horizontal pipe to understand oil mist transportation, particularly in the laminar-to-turbulent flow transition region. Three hot-wire anemometers and aerosol concentration monitors were used to deduce these effects as the two-phase mist flow gradually developed in the stream-wise direction. We found significant axial mist diffusion at Reynolds numbers (Re) < 1000 because of passive scalar transport by Poiseuille flow. However, this diffusion was restricted by the non-zero inertia of the mist at a Stokes number, O(10−5), relying on the Brownian motion of the mist. At Re > 2400, a sharp mist waveform was maintained by a turbulent flow with active radial mixing. New data were obtained within the range of 1000 < Re < 2400, which cannot be explained by interpolation between the above-mentioned two states. The mist concentration displays multiple temporal peaks at Re < 2000 owing to perturbations of localized turbulence as well as radial anisotropy as being conveyed more than 2000-diameters in distance. This behavior is caused by intermittent disturbances induced by the pipe wall roughness, which sharply distorts the wall-aligned laminar mist layer left by parabolic axial stretching of local laminar flow.  相似文献

A circular water jet (Re = 1.6 × 105; We = 8.8 × 103) plunging at shallow angles (θ  12.5°) into a quiescent pool is investigated computationally and experimentally. A surprising finding from the work is that cavities, of the order of jet diameter, are formed periodically in the impact location, even though the impinging flow is smooth and completely devoid of such a periodicity. Computational prediction of these frequencies was compared with experimental findings, yielding excellent agreement. The region in the vicinity of the impact is characterized by strong churning due to splashing and formation of air cavities. Measured velocity profiles indicate a concentration of momentum beneath the free surface slightly beyond the impact location (X/Dj  14), with a subsequent shift towards the free surface further downstream of this point (X/Dj  30). This shift is due primarily to the action of buoyancy on the cavity/bubble population. Comparisons of the mean velocity profile between simulations and experiments are performed, yielding good agreement, with the exception of the relatively small churning flow region. Further downstream (X/Dj  40), the flow develops mostly due to diffusion and the location of peak velocity coincides with the free surface. In this region, the free surface acts as an adiabatic boundary and restricts momentum diffusion, causing the peak velocity to occur at the free surface.  相似文献
