We calculate viscosity and thermal conductivity in systems of Lennard-Jones particles consisting of coexisting solid and liquid with different interface wetting properties using the recently developed equilibrium boundary fluctuation theory. We compare the slip length and equivalent liquid length obtained from these calculations with those obtained from nonequilibrium molecular dynamics. The equilibrium and nonequilibrium calculations of the slip length and the sum of the thermal equivalent lengths are in good agreement. We conclude that for both interfacial properties, the nonequilibrium simulations were probing the linear response. The significant dependence of the intrinsic equivalence length on the interfacial temperature difference used to generate the thermal gradient is explained as a consequence of the different thermodynamic states of the two interfaces.  相似文献

The issue of system size effects in the reverse perturbation nonequilibrium molecular dynamics method for determining transport coefficients of fluids is examined for the case of the Lennard-Jones model. It is found that when adequate precautions are observed in obtaining linear temperature or momentum profiles, a 250 atom system is adequate for determining the thermal conductivity and the shear viscosity. Also, a means of determining the uncertainties in the transport coefficients is described. The conclusion is that this method is computationally competitive with other simulation methods for estimating transport coefficients.  相似文献

Reverse nonequilibrium molecular dynamics and equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to compute the shear viscosity of the pure ionic liquid system [bmim][PF 6] at 300 K. The two methods yielded consistent results which were also compared to experiments. The results showed that the reverse nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (RNEMD) methodology can successfully be applied to computation of highly viscous ionic liquids. Moreover, this study provides a validation of the atomistic force-field developed by Bhargava and Balasubramanian ( J. Chem. Phys. 2007, 127, 114510 ) for dynamic properties.  相似文献

We use nonequilibrium molecular dynamics to characterize the phonon contribution to thermal conduction of Al nanostructures and the role of interfaces in metallic nanocomposites. We characterize the lattice thermal conductivity of pure Al samples as a function of size and temperature from which we obtain, using kinetic theory, the temperature dependence of the phonon mean free path. We also calculated the thermal conductivity of AlAl* and AlNi nanolaminate composites (where Al* differs from Al only in its mass) for various periodic sizes and compositions as well as the associated interfacial thermal resistivities (ITRs). We find that simple, additive models provide good estimates of the thermal conductivities of the nanocomposites in terms of those of the individual components and interfaces if size effects on the behavior of the individual components are considered. The additive models provide important insight to the decrease in thermal conductivity of the nanolaminates as their periodicity (thickness of a bilayer) is reduced to a size comparable with the phonon mean free path and break down when this characteristic size is reduced further. At this point the system can be regarded as homogeneous and the conductivity increases with decreasing periodicity of the laminates. We also observe that the ITR depends on the direction of the heat flux; this is the first molecular level characterization of such thermal diode behavior in a realistic three dimensional material.  相似文献

The reverse nonequilibrium molecular dynamics method for thermal conductivities is adapted to the investigation of molecular fluids. The method generates a heat flux through the system by suitably exchanging velocities of particles located in different regions. From the resulting temperature gradient, the thermal conductivity is then calculated. Different variants of the algorithm and their combinations with other system parameters are tested: exchange of atomic velocities versus exchange of molecular center-of-mass velocities, different exchange frequencies, molecular models with bond constraints versus models with flexible bonds, united-atom versus all-atom models, and presence versus absence of a thermostat. To help establish the range of applicability, the algorithm is tested on different models of benzene, cyclohexane, water, and n-hexane. We find that the algorithm is robust and that the calculated thermal conductivities are insensitive to variations in its control parameters. The force field, in contrast, has a major influence on the value of the thermal conductivity. While calculated and experimental thermal conductivities fall into the same order of magnitude, in most cases the calculated values are systematically larger. United-atom force fields seem to do better than all-atom force fields, possibly because they remove high-frequency degrees of freedom from the simulation, which, in nature, are quantum-mechanical oscillators in their ground state and do not contribute to heat conduction.  相似文献

Recently, Arya et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 113, 2079 (2000)] introduced a new molecular dynamics method to rapidly compute the viscosity of fluids. The technique, termed momentum impulse relaxation (MIR), involves the imposition of a Gaussian velocity profile on an equilibrated system, after which the decay in the profile is monitored as a function of time. The shear viscosity is computed by matching the rate of decay of the velocity profile to the corresponding solution of the Navier-Stokes equation. The method was originally applied to simple systems (argon and n-butane) and found to give a comparable accuracy to conventional equilibrium and nonequilibrium methods with more than an order of magnitude reduction in computing time. In this work, we extend and generalize the method to examine larger molecules with higher viscosities than have been examined previously. A detailed analysis of the method is given, including the effect the velocity boundary conditions have on the viscosity, the sensitivity of the results to the velocity profile fitting procedure, the effect of preequilibration of the Gaussian profile, and the effect the system size and box shape have on the accuracy and speed of the method. It is shown that the MIR method can be extended to treat multiatom systems without loss of accuracy or computational efficiency.  相似文献

We investigate the hydrodynamic boundary condition for simple nanofluidic systems such as argon and methane flowing in graphene nanochannels using equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations (EMD) in conjunction with our recently proposed method [J. S. Hansen, B. D. Todd, and P. J. Daivis, Phys. Rev. E 84, 016313 (2011)]. We first calculate the fluid-graphene interfacial friction coefficient, from which we can predict the slip length and the average velocity of the first fluid layer close to the wall (referred to as the slip velocity). Using direct nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations (NEMD) we then calculate the slip length and slip velocity from the streaming velocity profiles in Poiseuille and Couette flows. The slip lengths and slip velocities from the NEMD simulations are found to be in excellent agreement with our EMD predictions. Our EMD method therefore enables one to directly calculate this intrinsic friction coefficient between fluid and solid and the slip length for a given fluid and solid, which is otherwise tedious to calculate using direct NEMD simulations at low pressure gradients or shear rates. The advantages of the EMD method over the NEMD method to calculate the slip lengths/flow rates for nanofluidic systems are discussed, and we finally examine the dynamic behaviour of slip due to an externally applied field and shear rate.

The parallel shear viscosity of a dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) bilayer system is studied by reverse non‐equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations (RNEMD) with two different united‐atom force fields. The results are related to diffusion coefficients and structural distributions obtained by equilibrium molecular simulations. We investigate technical issues of the algorithm in the bilayer setup, namely, the dependence of the velocity profiles on the imposed flux and the influence of the thermostat on the calculated shear viscosity. We introduce the concept of local shear viscosity and investigate its dependence on the slip velocity of the monolayers and the particle density at the headgroup–water interface and the tail–tail interface. With this we demonstrate that the lipid bilayer is more viscous than the surrounding water phase, and that slip takes place near the headgroup region and in the centre of the bilayer where the alkyl tails meet. We also quantify the apparent increase in viscosity of the water molecules entangled at the water–headgroup interface.  相似文献

The thermal conductivity (λ) of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with chirality indices (5,0), (10,0), (5,5), and (10,10) has been studied by reverse nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (RNEMD) simulations as a function of different bond length alternation patterns (Δri). The Δri dependence of the bond force constant (krx) in the molecular dynamics force field has been modeled with the help of an electronic band structure approach. These calculations show that the Δri dependence of krx in tubes with not too small a diameter can be mapped by a simple linear bond length–bond order correlation. A bond length alternation with an overall reduction in the length of the nanotube causes an enhancement of λ, whereas an alternation scheme leading to an elongation of the tube is coupled to a decrease of the thermal conductivity. This effect is more pronounced in carbon nanotubes with larger diameters. The formation of a polyene‐like structure in the direction of the longitudinal axis has a negligible influence on λ. A comparative analysis of the RNEMD and crystal orbital results indicates that Δri‐dependent modifications of λ and the electrical conductivity are uncorrelated. This behavior is in‐line with a heat transfer that is not carried by electrons. Modifications of λ as a function of the bond alternation in the (10,10) nanotube are explained with the help of power spectra, which provide access to the density of vibrational states. We have suggested longitudinal low‐energy modes in the spectra that might be responsible for the Δri dependence of λ. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Comput Chem, 2010  相似文献

We have carried out ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of a liquid-vapor interfacial system consisting of a mixture of water and ammonia molecules. We have made a detailed analysis of the structural and dynamical properties of the bulk and interfacial regions of the mixture. Among structural properties, we have looked at the inhomogeneous density profiles of water and ammonia molecules, hydrogen bond distributions, orientational profiles, and also vibrational frequency distributions of bulk and interfacial molecules. It is found that the interfacial molecules show preference for specific orientations so as to form water-ammonia hydrogen bonds at the interface with ammonia as the acceptor. The structure of the system is also investigated in terms of inter-atomic voids present in the system. Among the dynamical properties, we have calculated the diffusion, orientational relaxation, hydrogen bond dynamics, and vibrational spectral diffusion in bulk and interfacial regions. It is found that the diffusion and orientation relaxation of the interfacial molecules are faster than those of the bulk. However, the hydrogen bond lifetimes are longer at the interface which can be correlated with the time scales found from the decay of frequency time correlations.  相似文献

The surrogate Hamiltonian is a general scheme to simulate the many body quantum dynamics composed of a primary system coupled to a bath. The method has been based on a representative bath Hamiltonian composed of two-level systems that is able to mimic the true system-bath dynamics up to a prespecified time. The original surrogate Hamiltonian method is limited to short time dynamics since the size of the Hilbert space required to obtain convergence grows exponentially with time. By randomly swapping bath modes with a secondary thermal reservoir, the method can simulate quantum dynamics of the primary system from short times to thermal equilibrium. By averaging a small number of realizations converged values of the system observables are obtained avoiding the exponential increase in resources. The method is demonstrated for the equilibration of a molecular oscillator with a thermal bath.  相似文献

Two microscopic transition theorems are given for the probability of nonequilibrium work performed on a subsystem of a thermal reservoir along the trajectory in phase space of the subsystem. The resultant transition probability is applied to the case of heat flow down an applied temperature gradient. A combined molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo algorithm is given for such a nonequilibrium steady state. Results obtained for the thermal conductivity are in good agreement with previous Green-Kubo and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics results.  相似文献

We developed a nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) method for calculating thermal conductivities. In contrast to other NEMD algorithms, here only the heat sink is localized, whereas the heat source can be uniformly distributed throughout the system. The noise due to cutting off the pair forces or to integration errors is such a uniform heat source. In traditional NEMD methods it is normally considered a nuisance factor. The new algorithm accounts for it and uses it. The algorithm is easy to derive, analyse and implement. Moreover, it circumvents the need to calculate energy fluxes. It is tested on the enhanced simple-point charge model for liquid water and reproduces the known thermal conductivity of this model liquid of 0.81 W m(-1) K(-1). It can be generalized to situations, where the thermal noise is replaced by another uniform heat source, or to the inverse situation, where the heat source is localized but the heat sink extends over the entire system.  相似文献

In this paper the thermal conductivity of the Lennard-Jones fluid is calculated by applying the combination of the density-fluctuation theory, the modified free volume theory of diffusion, and the generic van der Waals equation of state. A Monte Carlo simulation method is used to compute the equilibrium pair-correlation function necessary for computing the mean free volume and the coefficient in the potential-energy and virial contributions to the thermal conductivity. The theoretical results are compared with our own molecular dynamics simulation results and with those reported in the literature. They agree in good accuracy over wide ranges of density and temperature examined in molecular dynamics simulations. Thus the combined theory represents a molecular theory of thermal conductivity of the Lennard-Jones fluid and by extension simple fluids, which enables us to compute the nonequilibrium quantity by means of the Monte Carlo simulations for the equilibrium pair-correlation function.  相似文献

The thermal conductivity of molten NaCl and KCl was calculated through the Evans-Gillan nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) algorithm and Green-Kubo equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) simulations. The EMD simulations were performed for a "binary" ionic mixture and the NEMD simulations assumed a pure system for reasons discussed in this work. The cross thermoelectric coefficient obtained from Green-Kubo EMD simulations is discussed in terms of the homogeneous thermoelectric power or Seebeck coefficient of these materials. The thermal conductivity obtained from NEMD simulations is found to be in very good agreement with that obtained through Green-Kubo EMD simulations for a binary ionic mixture. This result points to a possible cancellation between the neglected "partial enthalpy" contribution to the heat flux associated with the interdiffusion of one species through the other and that part of the thermal conductivity related to the coupled fluxes of charge and heat in "binary" ionic mixtures.  相似文献

Titanium is a commonly used material in aviation, aerospace, and military applications, due to the outstanding mechanical properties of titanium and its alloys. However, its relatively low thermal conductivity restricts its extended usage. The use of graphene as a filler shows great potential for the enhancement of thermal conductivity in titanium-based metal-matrix composites (MMCs). We used classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulation methods to explore the thermal conductance at the titanium–graphene (Ti/Gr) interface for its thermal boundary conductance, which plays an important role in the thermal properties of Ti-based MMCs. The effects of system size, layer number, temperature, and strain were considered. The results show that the thermal boundary conductance (TBC) decreases with an increasing layer number and reaches a plateau at n = 5. TBC falls under tensile strain and, in turn, it grows with compressive strain. The variation of TBC is explained qualitatively by the interfacial atomic vibration coupling factor. Our findings also provide insights into ways to optimize future thermal management based on Ti-based MMCs materials.  相似文献
