In this paper there is proved a generalization of the results of Whitehead and Pontryagin on the homotopy classification of closed, simply connected four-manifolds. Let W and M be compact four-dimensional simply connected oriented four-manifolds. By qw is denoted the intersection index on the group H2(W).Basic Result. THEOREM (Extension). Let the groups H1(W)and H1(M) be finite and suppose given a homotopy equivalence fWM. We study the limiting behavior of the weighted central paths{(x(), s())} > 0 in linear programming at both = 0 and = . We establish the existence of a partition (B ,N ) of the index set { 1, ,n } such thatx i() ands j () as fori B , andj N , andx N (),s B () converge to weighted analytic centers of certain polytopes. For allk 1, we show that thekth order derivativesx (k) () ands (k) () converge when 0 and . Consequently, the derivatives of each order are bounded in the interval (0, ). In 1955, Arne Pleijel proposed the following problem which remains unsolved to this day: Given a closed plane convex curve C and a point x() at a fixed distance above the plane, as the point x() varies, characterize the point for which the conical surface with vertex x() and base C attains its minimum, and determine the limits as 0 and of this minimum point. The purpose of this paper is to solve the cases where approach its extremities and in the course of the solution, we obtain an interesting characterization of the limit points, which we shall call the Pleijel points of C. A consequence is that the inner Pleijel point provides an upper bound for the isoperimetric defect of C. We also generalize the problem to higher dimensional spaces, and obtain the corresponding characterizations of the limiting points for convex surfaces.  相似文献

We consider the sine-Gordon equation in laboratory coordinates with both x and t in [0, ). We assume that u(x, 0), ut(x, 0), u(0, t) are given, and that they satisfy u(x, 0)2q, ut(x, 0)0, for large x, u(0, t)2p for large t, where q, p are integers. We also assume that ux(x, 0), ut(x, 0), ut(0, t), u(0, t)-2p, u(x, 0)-2q L2. We show that the solution of this initial-boundary value problem can be reduced to solving a linear integral equation which is always solvable. The asymptotic analysis of this integral equation for large t shows how the boundary conditions can generate solitons.The authors dedicate this paper to the memory of M. C. Let T be a monad over a category A. Then a homotopy structure for A, defined by a cocylinder P : A A, or path-endofunctor, can be lifted to the category A T of Eilenberg–Moore algebras over T, provided that P is consistent with T in a natural sense, i.e. equipped with a natural transformation : T P P T satisfying some obvious axioms. In this way, homotopy can be lifted from well-known, basic situations to various categories of algebras for instance, from topological spaces to topological semigroups, or spaces over a fixed space (fibrewise homotopy), or actions of a fixed topological group (equivariant homotopy); from categories to strict monoidal categories; from chain complexes to associative chain algebras. The interest is given by the possibility of lifting the homotopy operations (as faces, degeneracy, connections, reversion, interchange, vertical composition, etc.) and their axioms from A to A T , just by verifying the consistency between these operations and : T P P T. When this holds, the structure we obtain on our category of algebras is sufficiently powerful to ensure the main general properties of homotopy.  相似文献

We prove the following generalization of a theorem of Ferry concerning selections of strongly regular multivalued maps onto the class of paracompact spaces: Let : X (Z, ) be a map of a paracompact space X into a metric space (Z, ) whose values (x) are complete subspaces of Z and absolute extensors (AE), for every x X. Suppose that can be represented as = , where : X Y is a continuous singlevalued map of X onto some finite-dimensional paracompact space Y and : Y (Z, ) is a strongly regular map. Then for every closed subset A X and every selection r : A Z of the map |A : A Z, there exists an extension : X Z of r such that is a selection of the map .
