ABSTRACT

Novel chiral three-ring compounds with the –CH2O group close to chirality centre were synthesised and their properties were studied. The phase transitions and phase sequences were observed using a polarising optical microscope. The phase transition temperatures and enthalpies were checked by differential scanning calorimetry. A broad-frequency dielectric spectroscopy was also used to confirm the phase transition temperatures as well as the phase sequence. The helical pitch was measured by the spectrophotometry method. It was found that the compounds differing only in one lateral substituted fluorine atom create two different chiral tilted smectic phases, one a ferroelectric phase (SmC*) and the other an antiferroelectric phase (SmCA*).  相似文献

Two ferroelectric three‐ring chiral esters, one with a partially fluorinated alkyl chain and another with a cyano terminal group, were mixed with a structurally similar compound having an alkyl terminal chain. In their mixtures an antiferroelectric phase was induced. The phase behaviour, spontaneous polarisation, tilt angle, smectic layer spacing and helical pitch of both systems were determined. The mechanism of the induction of an antiferroelectric phase is different in both cases, with highly tilted phases in former system and less tilted phases in the latter.  相似文献

Eight types of bicomponent systems composed of antiferroelectric compounds with different polarity of achiral chain and different temperature dependence of helical pitch as well as three multicomponent mixtures composed of antiferroelectric compounds with opposite helical twist sense were studied. The phase miscibility was tested by polarising optical microscopy. The results of the helical pitch and helical twist sense measurements obtained by a spectrophotometric method of selectively reflected light and by polarimetric method, respectively, are presented. It was found that it is possible to control helical pitch length and temperature of helix twist inversion in antiferroelectric mixtures by controlling the ratio of compounds with left- and right-handed helix in such mixtures, although all of them have the same chiral terminal chain.  相似文献

New chiral liquid crystalline materials containing a keto group and two lactate units attached to the mesogenic core have been synthesized and studied. All the new compounds show the paraelectric SmA, ferroelectric SmC* and antiferroelectric SmC*A phases each over rather broad temperature ranges. The properties of the phases were characterized by DSC, electro-optical and dielectric studies. The spontaneous polarization, tilt angle, helical pitch, and switching times were determined for the polar phases.  相似文献

Four new synthesised liquid crystalline compounds belonging to the homologous series of fluorinated biphenyl benzoate esters have been studied to compare their dielectric and electrooptic properties. Three of the studied compounds exhibited ferro- and antiferroelectric phases while one of them exhibited only one liquid crystalline phase – ferroelectric SmC*. No paraelectric phase was detected and straight transition between isotropic liquid and ferroelectric phases was observed for all studied compounds. Tilt angle for all of the studied compounds was equal to ca. 45? in the liquid crystalline phases, except temperature range close to the isotropic liquid–ferroelectric smectic phase transition. Temperature dependences of helical pitch, spontaneous polarisation and switching time have been determined. Based on XRD results, temperature dependence of the layer thickness has also been found. Only one relaxation process has been revealed in the ferroelectric as well as antiferroelectric phases, even the bias field up to 8 V/µm was applied. The dielectric and electrooptic data are discussed based on the mean-field theory predictions.  相似文献

Compounds with the same chiral terminal chain but different structure of rigid core and non-chiral terminal chain were added to basic highly tilted ferroelectric compound in the aim of establishing whether the miscibility of phases, especially ferroelectric phase, exists in these compounds and what are the helical pitch and tilt angle temperature dependence in bicomponent systems. In certain systems, we obtained a mixture with very short helical pitch at broad temperature range of ferroelectric phase, which open opportunities for the formulation of multicomponent mixtures for fast switching ferroelectric liquid crystals modes.  相似文献

The temperature dependence of helical pitch for members of an homologous series of orthoconic antiferroelectric compounds (3FmHPhF) and their bicomponent mixtures (m = 3 and 5 as well as m = 3 and 7) has been measured by the method of selective light reflection. The compounds have the same chiral centre but they have different temperature dependence of the helical pitch as well as the helical twisting sense in SmC*A phase: right for member m = 3, left for m = 7, and both right and left for m = 5. For this last homologue, the change of twisting sense is connected with the appearance of the unwound structure. Concentration dependence on helical pitch was investigated in the mixtures. It was demonstrated that it is possible to obtain mixtures with desirable high pitch and also with totally unwound structure.  相似文献

The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of several homologues of (S)-(+)-1-methylheptyl 4-[4(trans-4-n-alkoxycinnamoyloxy)benzoyloxy]benzoates (series I) and (S)-(+)-1-methylheptyl 4-[4-(trans-4-n-alkoxy-alpha-methylcinnamoyloxy)benzoyloxy]benzoates (series II) are described. The influence of the alpha -methyl group on the different mesophases and the clearing temperatures has been evaluated. Many homologues of both the series show a ferroelectric chiral smectic C (SmC*) phase while the antiferroelectric smectic C phase (SmC*A) is exhibited by compounds of series I. The mesophases have been identified by optical polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and miscibility studies. The spontaneous polarization, the helical pitch and the tilt angle of two of the compounds have also been measured.  相似文献

A first oligomeric antiferroelectric liquid crystal, a cyclohexane based trimesogen, was synthesized. It was characterized by microscopic observation, differential scanning calorimetry, helical pitch measurement, X-ray diffraction and electro-optical study. A large domain of antiferroelectric phase (DeltaT 55 C) and a very rich polymorphism (SmC*, SmC*, SmC* , A FI SmC*, TGBA, BP) are exhibited by the trimesogen.  相似文献

The influence of six antiferroelectric compounds on the helical pitch of mixture W-1000, which was reported as long pitch orthoconic antiferroelectric liquid crystalline mixture, was checked by spectrophotometry and polarimetry methods. The electro-optical properties for the mixture with the longest pitch were measured. An improvement in electro-optical response due to the long pitch is reported. The novelty in electro-optical properties is the good symmetry response.  相似文献

The investigation of the helical pitch and the helical twist sense for several liquid crystal compounds in antiferroelectric phase have been performed. Electronic circular dichroic (ECD) and vibrational circular dichroic (VCD) spectroscopies have proved the existence of unwound helical structure in antiferroelctric phase. Obtained results may confirm the assumption connected via the inversion phenomena in liquid crystalline chiral phase with the change of the concentration of different conformers promoting opposite handedness. Two examples of such conformers, obtained by conformational analysis, have been proposed.  相似文献

Abstract

A chiral liquid crystal compound exhibiting the ferroelectric smectic C phase and the recently discovered ferroelectric smectic M phase has been studied by measurements of the Goldstone-mode relaxation frequency and dielectric strength, the spontaneous polarization, the tilt angle and the helical pitch. The data allow the determination of the Goldstone-mode rotational viscosity and the pitch controlling elastic constant. The results indicate that the smectic M phase is characterized by a larger molecular order within the smectic layers compared to the smectic C phase confirming the assumption of a tilted hexatic structure for the smectic M phase.  相似文献

Two new chiral series with a tolane core: (S) 4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl (series IB) and (S) 4-(1-ethylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl (series IC) 4-alkanoyloxytolane-4'-carboxylates have been synthesized and characterized. All the compounds are mesomorphic, and most of them display the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase. The mesomorphic properties have been analysed by optical microscopy, DSC, helical pitch and electro-optical measurements and X-ray diffraction study. Series IB exhibits a very rich polymesomorphism with SmC*alpha, SmC*, SmC* F12, SmC* F11 and SmC*A phases, like the previously reported series IA, [(S) 4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl 4-alkyloxytolane-4-carboxylates]. Series IC is more interesting because it presents for the first time in antiferroelectric series the liquid-like phase (L phase) between the SmC*A and isotropic phases. Preliminary optical studies plead in favour of a helical short range structure for this new liquid-like L phase.  相似文献

The fluorinated compound, (S)-4′′-(6-perfluoropentanoyoxyhexyl-1-oxy)-2′,3′-difluoro-4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)-[1,1′:4′,1′′]-terphenyl, which exhibits antiferroelectric SmCA*, ferroelectric SmC* and paraelectric SmA* phases, has been investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and frequency-dependent dielectric spectroscopy methods. X-ray studies have revealed that the layer thickness remains almost constant in the SmA* phase but within the SmC* and SmCA* phases it decreases with decreasing temperature, a step jump being observed only at the SmA*–SmC* transition. The tilt angle in the SmCA* phase decreases from 22.2° to 19.5°, and in the SmC* phase it decreases from 18.8° to 5.5°. Spontaneous polarisation is found to be quite high and varies between 74.1 and 118.7 nC cm?2. The variation in ε′ and ε′′ with temperature shows a discontinuous change at the transition temperatures. Goldstone mode relaxation is only observed in the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases and is found to be of the Cole–Cole type. The soft mode is observed on application of a bias field near the SmC*–SmA* transition. Neither the soft mode nor the anti-phase azimuthal angle fluctuation mode is observed in SmCA*. Rotational viscosity decreases quite rapidly with temperature but in a different manner in the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases. Activation energy for this process is found to be 48.14 kJ mol?1 in the SmC* phase.  相似文献

A bicomponent mixture in the orthoconic aniferroelectric phase, based on three-ring esters with fluorine atoms and ether group in a nonchiral chain, was doped with a variety of cyano-terminated compounds containing different numbers of phenyl rings in a rigid core and a terminal chain of different chirality. Compounds with two chiral chains were added to the basic mixture. The influence of the structure and concentration of dopant on the temperature-dependence of helical parameters, such as helical pitch and twist sense, were assessed by spectrophotometric and polarimetric methods. Long cyano-terminated compounds were found to be better than the other dopants tested for improving the usable properties of the antiferroelectric mixtures.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Physical properties of the partially fluorinated compound 3F5FPhF, with hockey stick-like molecules, were studied by complementary methods. Apart from the already reported paraelectric SmA*, ferroelectric SmC* and antiferroelectric SmC*A phases, the presence of the smectic C*α subphase in the phase sequence was proved by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy, electro-optic and dielectric spectroscopy methods. The temperature dependence of the smectic layer thickness and correlation length of the lateral short-range order was determined by X-ray diffraction. Based on dielectric measurements three relaxation processes were revealed in the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase (two collective: PL, PH and one molecular: s-process), two collective ones (Goldstone and soft modes) were found both in the ferroelectric SmC* phase and SmC*α subphase while one relaxation process (soft mode) in the paraelectric SmA* phase. The results were compared with that obtained for other structurally similar compounds, and it was shown that even addition of one methylene group to the side chain influences much on the physical properties.  相似文献

We report on the observation of relaxation phenomena with extremely long relaxation times, amounting to several hours. These effects take place in some liquid crystal mixtures exhibiting ferroelectric and antiferroelectric dipole order. The observed phenomena are connected with the transformation from the supercooled ferroelectric state to another, metastable state. This transition may be described using a Debye type relaxation formula. At low temperatures, a second slow transition takes place: from the metastable intermediate state to the antiferroelectric phase. This transition is characterized by unidimensional growth of the antiferroelectric domains with a constant velocity. Close to the lower temperature limit of existence of the ferroelectric phase, a direct transition from the ferroelectric to the antiferroelectric phase takes place. This transition is described by an Avrami model, hence it is governed by the creation and growth of nuclei of the antiferroelectric phase.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Novel chiral three-ring (R) enantiomers were synthesised using optically active (R)-(?)-2-octanol. Properties, such as the sequence of phases, the transition temperatures and enthalpies, were tested by a polarising optical microscope and differential scanning calorimeter. An antiferroelectric smectic phase (SmCA*) with a direct transition from the antiferroelectric to the isotropic phase (SmCA*-Iso) was observed for three esters with an achiral C3F7CH2O(CH2)3O– terminal chain. Bi- and multicomponent mixtures with a broad temperature range of the antiferroelectric phase and good electro-optical properties were formulated. Helical pitch of pure esters and mixtures was measured by spectrophotometry method.  相似文献
