The dielectric permittivity tensor components, εII and ε, in the nematic phase of 6CB (4‐n‐hexyl‐4′‐cyanobiphenyl) were measured in the pressure range 0.1–130 MPa and the temperature range 12–58°C. The dielectric anisotropy, Δε(p, V, T) = εII ‐ ε, was analysed in isothermal, isobaric and isochoric conditions taking into account the pVT data and the well known Maier and Meier equation. On that basis the nematic order parameter S(p, V, T) was determined. This was used to calculate the parameter Γ relating the interaction potential with the volume (density). Its value Γ = 4.1 agrees very well with other estimates.  相似文献

The dielectric and elastic properties of liquid crystals (LCs) generally depend on the molecule structure, such as polar group and carbon chain length. For further investigation of the influence of molecular structure on the dielectric and elastic properties of fluorine-containing tricyclic isothiocyanate LC, the experimental temperature was controlled at 25°C by precision hot stage, and a precision LCR meter was used to measure the capacitance of six LC cells under the voltage from 0.1 to 20 V at 1 kHz. An LC cell capacitance model and a dual-cell model were adopted to obtain the dielectric anisotropy, and the capacitance–voltage curves of six LC materials were plotted. The threshold voltage of Fréedericksz transition was analysed, and a finite difference iterative method was used to attain specific values of three elastic constants. The influence of molecular structure on the dielectric and elastic constants was finally analysed. Experimental results showed that the introduction of meta-difluoro group would increase the dielectric anisotropy and reduce the threshold voltage of LC. As the length of the alkyl carbon chain increased, the dielectric anisotropy would have an odd–even alternation effect, which would lead to changes in the elastic constants of LC.  相似文献

We demonstrate a simple method for measuring the twist elastic constant (K22) of a nematic liquid crystal (LC). By adding some chiral dopant to an LC host, the LC directors rotate 180° in a homogeneous cell, which is known as 180° super-twisted nematic (STN) cell. By preparing two such STN cells with different chiral concentrations and measuring their Fréedericksz threshold voltages, we can obtain the K22 and helical twisting power simultaneously. In the whole process, there is no need to measure the pitch length. Our obtained K22 values agree well with those reported by using other methods.  相似文献

The Merck nematic mixture E49 exhibits a large nematic interval (0–100 °C) and a large dielectric anisotropy. Both of these features make E49 interesting for applications and basic physics. Unfortunately, no systematic measurements of the material constants of this mixture and their temperature dependence have been reported in the literature. In this paper we report experimental measurements of the splay and bend elastic constants (K 11 and K 33) of the ordinary and the extraordinary refractive indices (n ort and n par) at the wavelength λ?=?632.8 nm and of the two elastic constants parallel and orthogonal to the director (εpar and εort) at the frequency ν?=?5?kHz. The temperature dependence of all of these parameters is found in the temperature range 25–99 °C. The measurements of the elastic constants are performed using both a dielectric and an optical method simultaneously on the same nematic sample. The results obtained using the two methods are in a satisfactory agreement between them within the estimated experimental uncertainty. The ordinary and the extraordinary indices are measured using the prism method.  相似文献

The behaviour of the anisotropic electrical conductivity of liquid crystal–gold nanoparticle (LC‐GNP) composites consisting of a commercially available room temperature nematic compound doped with alkylthiol‐capped GNPs has been investigated. The nematic–isotropic transition of the composite decreases nearly linearly with increasing X, the concentration of GNP (in weight %) at a rate of about 1°C /weight %. The inclusion of GNPs increases the electrical conductivity of the system with the value increasing by more than two orders of magnitude for X = 5%. However, the anisotropy in conductivity, defined as the ratio of the conductivity along (σ) and orthogonal (σ) to the director shows a much smaller but definite decrease as X increases.  相似文献

Abstract

The dielectric constants and the elastic coefficients for splay (K 1) and bend (K 3) of the charge transfer induced nematic (Nc) phase of tridecyl pentakis(phenylethynyl)phenyl ether (1) doped with different amounts of 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (2) were determined by studying the electric field induced bend deformation using the capacitance method. A negative dielectric anisotropy was observed. For the bend elastic constant K 3 values up to 22 × 10?12 N are found which are one order of magnitude higher than the respective values of discotic nematic (ND) phases. Values of 0·6–0·8 are obtained for the ratio K 1/K 3; these show a minimum for the equimolar complex.  相似文献

A nematic fluid is characterized by five friction coefficients. When dilute polymer coils are added to the fluid, all these coefficients are modified. Three Miesowicz viscosities (measured under an aligning magnetic field) and two coupling coefficients between orientation and flow are discussed. In our calculation, elastic dumbbells are used to model the flexible polymer chains. The results are written in terms of two size parameters R and R and two chain friction coefficients λ and λ (the label ∥ refers to a direction parallel to the nematic axis). This could be compared to other experiments (such as translational diffusion) which measure λ and directly. They may give useful estimates of coil conformation in nematic solvents.  相似文献

Abstract

The temperature dependence of the three elastic constants k ii (i = 1, 2, 3) and the twist viscosity γ1 of two nematic side chain polyacrylates and one comparable low molecular weight compound have been measured by means of the Freedericksz effect. The change from the low to the high molecular liquid crystal causes a change of the ratio k 33/k 11 from greater to less than unity, but the order of magnitude of the elastic constants remains the same. In contrast, the twist viscosity of the polymeric liquid crystal is about 1000 times greater in magnitude than that of a comparable low molecular weight liquid crystal. The activation energy for the viscosity of the polymer differs by a factor 3–4 from that of the low molecular weight liquid crystal. The elastic constants as well as the twist viscosity show a quadratic dependence on the order parameter S over a wide temperature range.  相似文献

The elastic constant anisotropy and the core structure of wedge disclinations with strengths s = ±½ of lyotropic liquid crystals of a soluble polydiacetylene, P-4-BCMU (M w = 5.15 × 105, M n = 2.16 × 105, and M w/M n = 2.4), in chloroform was studied. The Frank elastic constant anisotropy defined by ε = (k11 ? k33)/(k11 + k33) for this polymer was determined by three different methods. The results show that the value of ε for this polymer is 0.5 (±0.05) in solid state and/or in liquid crystal state, indicating that the splay constant k11 is three time higher than the bend constant k33. This result further implies that splay is unfavorable in the liquid as it requires greater energy than bend. In the area adjacent to the core of a singularity the value of ε increases with decreasing distance to the core, indicating increasing anisotropy of the elastic constants toward the core. The influence of the elastic constant anisotropy on the optical texture of the LC polymer when viewed by polarizing light microscope is studied. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Abstract

Several new classes of polar and non-polar bicyclohexane liquid crystals comprising alkenyl side chains are presented. The compounds exhibit low optical anisotropies, Δn, < 0.1 and rotational viscosities, γ1, as low as 35 cP at 22°C. This leads, in combination with large elastic expressions k = k 1 + (k 3 - 2k 2)/4 > 12 × 10?12 N, to low viscoelastic ratios γ1/k and to short response times in field-effect liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Strong odd-even effects occur in the bend/splay elastic ratio k 3/k 1 upon shifting the alkenyl double bond from even into odd side chain positions. As a result the ratio k 3/k 1 can be tuned over the wide range 0·9 ? k 3/k 1 ? 3·0. Correlations between the electro-optical properties of twisted nematic, supertwisted nematic, optical mode interference LCDs and material parameters demonstrate the high degree of multiplexability of the new compounds. Roche interactive molecular modelling is applied to determine the possible equilibrium configuration not only of single molecules, but for the first time to whole molecular ensembles comprising 12 molecules. First results show that the shape of the ensembles, E, depends on the position of the double bond in the side chains of the molecules. The length/width ratio of E decreases for even double bond positions.  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are dispersed in (4’-fluoro phenyl azo) phenyl-4-yl 3-[N-(4’-n-hecyloxy 2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino]-2-methylbenzoate (6–2M-F) a bent-core nematic (BCN) liquid crystalline medium composed of bent-shaped molecules with short core, reduced bend angle possessing polar fluoro substituent in longitudinal direction and methyl group in bent direction. Such molecules are at the borderline of typical bent-core and rod-like molecules resembling hockey stick shape with intermediate properties. The elastic anisotropy is negative for 6–2M-F (bend elastic constant K33 < splay elastic constant K11); similar to other BCNs reported earlier with smectic-like clusters; but turns to high positive (K33 > K11) value by insertion of SWCNT (concentration ≥0.05 wt.%) in 6–2 M-F. The ratio of K33/K11 becomes comparable to the calamitic liquid crystals (LCs) in doped system. Dielectric anisotropy increases in the nanocomposite implying enhanced nematic ordering due to ππ electron interaction between CNTs and the LC molecules. Threshold voltage at first increases and then decreases with increasing CNT concentration owing to the respective variations in splay viscosity of the system. The present study demonstrated the interaction of SWCNTs with BCN molecules and reveals significant modifications in viscoelastic, dielectric and ionic properties of the host.  相似文献

Abstract

By using the attenuated total reflection method associated with the excitation of surface plasmons, the tilt angle of the liquid crystal director and its gradient at the surface are measured in a planar nematic cell as a function of the applied voltage. The surface anchoring anisotropy δπ of the liquid crystal and the surface elastic constant ks , are found to be δπ = 0.288 erg/cm and ks , = 9·12 × 10-11 erg, respectively, when the boundary condition suggested by Barbero et al is used. The theoretical and experimental values obtained with this boundary condition and that of Mada are discussed. The results show that the boundary condition proposed by Barbero et al is in better agreement with the experiment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We report on the temperature-dependent measurements of dielectric permittivity, birefringence, elastic constants and rotational viscosity for 4-propoxy-biphenyl-4-carbonitrile in the nematic region. The temperature dependence of the three elastic constants was determined from studies of the Freédericksz transition. The thermal dependence of elastic constants shows features similar to the literature (bend > splay > twist). Elastic constants are proportional to the square of the order parameter. Temperature-dependent dielectric characterisation was carried out at a frequency of 10 kHz. The compound shows positive dielectric anisotropy in the nematic phase. The rotational viscosity is found to be relatively low. Temperature dependence of order parameter is estimated using Haller’s method. The figure of merit was also calculated as a function of temperature.  相似文献

In this article, we study the electro-optical (EO) properties of the homogeneous aligned nematic liquid crystal (N-LC) doped with cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanoparticles (NPs). The EO characteristics of Co3O4 doped N-LC are higher performance, indicating lower threshold voltage (1.33 V), faster rising time (1.479 ms), and faster falling time (9.343 ms) than pure liquid crystal (LC) cells. We have demonstrated these results by investigating the relationship between dielectric constants and LC device properties. Furthermore, we proved NPs doped N-LC cells drive low power operation without capacitance hysteresis. Our experimental results were verified by software simulation based on general physical properties.  相似文献

Hydrogen-bonded blends based on smectic side group functionalized LC copolymers containing 4-alkyloxybenzoic acid fragments (proton donor) and a non-mesogenic low molecular mass dopant 4-cyanophenyl pyridine-4-carboxylate or 4-methoxyphenyl-d4 pyridine-4-carboxylate (proton acceptor) were obtained. The blends containing 10-35 mol % of low molecular weight dopant form nematic (I-N-SmA) or re-entrant SmA phases (I-SmA-N-SmAre). The temperature dependence of the order parameter S, the birefringence Δn, and the splay K 1 and bend K 3 elastic constants of the nematic phase were studied by 2H NMR spectroscopy and the Fréedericksz method of threshold transitions in a magnetic field. A mechanism for the destruction of the SmA phase and the formation of the nematic phase in the hydrogen-bonded blends is suggested.  相似文献

In this work, the effect of Iron nanoparticles (Fe NPs) dispersion in 4′-(Hexyloxy)-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (6OCB) nematic liquid crystal properties has been studied. Inclusion of Fe NPs (0.25 wt. %) in 6OCB liquid crystal (LC) on textures, isotropic–nematic transition temperature (TIN), electro-optical and dielectric properties have been investigated in planar aligned cell. The threshold voltage (Vth) and TIN decrease after dispersion of Fe NPs. Dielectric spectroscopy in nematic phase show that relaxation frequency (fr) also decreases after dispersion of Fe NPs in 6OCB. The observed relaxation mode is due to the flip-flop motion of LC molecules about their short axis. The band gap and AC conductivity in case of 6OCB-Fe sample increase over pure 6OCB sample. A decrease in activation energy is also noticed.  相似文献

4'-n-Pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) is a room temperature nematic liquid crystal with a high positive dielectric anisotropy and a high chemical stability. Many experimental results concerning the elastic and dielectric constants of 5CB are available in the literature, although there is often no satisfactory agreement between the experimental data obtained by different groups, especially as far as the dielectric constants are concerned. Furthermore, no detailed investigation of the temperature dependence of the elastic and dielectric constants close to the nematic-isotropic transition temperature T NI has yet been reported. In this paper, we report the measurement of the elastic and dielectric constants of 5CB, and the temperature behaviour close to T NI has been investigated in detail. The experiment consists in the measurement of the director deformation induced by an electric field using simultaneously both a dielectric and an optical method. The simultaneous use of these two methods provides an indirect check on the reliability of the measurements. Special attention has been devoted to control possible sources of uncertainty. In particular, the effects of finite anchoring energy and of finite pretilt angle have been considered. The temperature dependence of the anisotropy of the refractive indices is also obtained in the experiment.  相似文献

The temperature variation of the splay and bend elastic constants of a binary system exhibiting nematic-induced smectic Ad and re-entrant nematic phases measured by electric field-induced Freedericksz transition method has been reported. As bend deformation is not permitted in the smectic A phase, bend elastic constant (K33) could only be determined in the nematic and re-entrant nematic phases. In both the nematic phases, the splay elastic constant has the same order of magnitude and does not show any pretransitional effect. However, in the induced smectic Ad phase, the value of K11 is about one to two orders higher than that in the nematic phases. The bend elastic constant shows a strong pretransitional effect near the nematic–smectic and smectic–re-entrant nematic phase transitions. The influence of the presence of the induced smectic phase is observed even in those mixtures which have no induced smectic phases. As the smectic phase is approached, the ratio K33/K11 increases rapidly and diverges to infinity.  相似文献

New liquid crystal (LC) compounds composed of terphenyl as a core and 2-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropenyl terminal group were synthesised. Their structures were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectra and infrared spectrometry. The mesomorphic and physical properties were evaluated. The results show that these compounds have a smectic phase, large dielectric anisotropy, high birefringence and suitable rotational viscosity. The lateral fluorine substitutions lead to a large perpendicular component of the dielectric constant, and a small value of Δε/ε. These characteristics are significant for the fringe-field switching LC display mode.  相似文献

The 52 × 52 energy matrix related to the ground multiplet 4I9/2 and the first to third excited multiplets 4I11/2, 4I13/2 and 4I15/2 for 4f3 ions in trigonal crystal field under an external magnetic field is established. By diagonalizing the energy matrix, the spin-Hamiltonian parameters (g factor g//, g and hyperfine structure constants 143A//, 143A, 145A//, 145A) of the trigonal Nd3+ center in congruent LiNbO3 crystal are calculated. The calculated results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental values. From the calculations, the negative signs of hyperfine structure constants are suggested and the angular distortion of the trigonal Nd3+ center in LiNbO3, which is unable to be determined by EXAFS measurement, is obtained. The results are discussed.  相似文献
