Three esters of maltose (A1A3) with 4–(4–(alkoxybenzoyloxy)phenoxy) –6–oxohexanoic acid (b1b3) side-arms have been synthesised. All the maltose derivatives were laevo-rotationary, unlike their parent cores. The side arm b1 did not display liquid crystalline (LC) properties, and b2 and b3 displayed thermotropic nematic LC properties. The star-shaped compound (SSC) A1 with b1 side-arms did not display a mesomorphic phase. Unlike the nematic schlieren texture provided by side-arms b2 and b3, the star-shaped liquid crystals (SSLC) A2 and A3 displayed Grandjean and oily texture in the cholesteric phase. The results suggest that the LC properties of the side-arms have an important influence on the formation of LC properties in an SSC, and that the maltose core is important in determining the mesomorphic phase type. In other words, the SSC displayed LC properties only when the side-arms were also LC, and the maltose core induced a cholesteric phase in the SSLC with nematic side-arms. The mesomorphic regions for A2 and A3 were 39.1 and 53.7°C during the heating cycle and 63.8 and 107.0°C during the cooling cycle, respectively. The longer terminal chain rendered the mesomorphic region broader.  相似文献

Four non-symmetric dimers containing mandelic acid as the chiral core have been synthesised, termed as QBMA-B, QBMA-BCN, QBMA-BBCN and QBBMA-BBCN, respectively. Chemical structures and liquid crystal (LC) properties of the dimers were characterised by FTIR, 1H-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and polarised optical microscopy (POM). The results indicated that the rigidity and conformation of the molecules of the dimers played important effects on their mesophase properties. QBMA-B did not display any mesophase, QBMA-BCN and QBMA-BBCN exhibited nematic (N) phases, while QBBMA-BBCN displayed cholesteric (ch) phase, which indicated that chiral mandelic acid could induce cholesteric phase, but some attention should be paid to the molecular conformation to obtain cholesteric phase. For the four dimers, melting temperature (Tm) increased first and then decreased, inferring that molecular conformation played a more important effect besides molecular weight and rigidity.  相似文献

A new series of multi-arm chiral liquid crystals (LCs) D1–D3 were synthesised and characterised. Cholic acid was used as the core and ω-[4-(p-alkoxybenzoloxy)phenoxycarbonyl]valeric acid (B1–B3) was used as the mesogenic arms, containing different terminal substituent X (B1: X= -OCH3, B2:X= -CH3, B3: X= -Cl). Their structures and mesomorphic properties were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectrometer, differential scanning calorimetry, polarised optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The mesogenic B1–B3 displayed smectic B phase. The multi-arm LC D1 displayed cholesteric, while D2 and D3 exhibited nematic phase. The formation of cholesteric phase of D1 was affected by both the chiral core – the bulky cholic acid and the polarity of the terminal substituent of the mesogenic arm. That D1 displayed cholesteric phase but D2–D3 did not indicated that the stronger polarity of the terminal group OCH3 of D1 played an important part in stabilising the cholesteric phase. The multi-arm LCs D1–D3 all showed ultraviolet activity. The wavelength of maximum absorption of D1–D3 was affected by the terminal substituent of the mesogenic arm.  相似文献

We present a mean field theory to describe a helicoidal cholesteric phase for mixtures of a chiral nematic liquid crystal (LC) and a polymer chain as well as for pure chiral nematic LC molecules in the presence of a longitudinal external field parallel to the pitch axis of a cholesteric (Ch) phase. The free energy of the helicoidal Ch phase (ChH) is derived as a function of a usual orientational order parameter and an order parameter of the ChH phase. On increasing the strength of the external field, we find that the Ch phase changes to the nematic (N) phase through the ChH phase. Depending on the temperature and the strength of the external field, we find the second-order NChH and ChH–Ch phase transitions and the first-order paranematic (pN)N, pNChH and pN–Ch phase transitions. We also predict phase diagrams in mixtures of a flexible polymer and a Ch LC molecule under the external field.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We report the induction of spontaneously undulated chiral nematic structures of liquid crystal (LC) dimers with rigid aromatic molecular arms linked by flexible chains with an odd number of carbons. When a small amount of chiral dopants (CD) are added to the dimers, we find the formation of different stripe textures on cooling 4–10 μm films in the nematic phase. The temperature where the stripes form depends on the film thickness and the direction of the stripes depends on the CD concentrations. We show that the experimentally observed stripes are due to undulation instabilities that spontaneously form as a result of the anomalously small bend elastic constant that prefers director bend instead of twist deformation, the opposite of the situation in usual cholesteric LCs.  相似文献

In order to investigate the photochemical tuning capability of chiral monomers and polymers containing end-capped menthyl groups, a new series of chiral dopants was synthesized and added to commercially available nematic liquid crystals to induce cholesteric liquid crystal (LC) phases. The addition of chiral dopants with azo structure led to phototunability of the reflection colour of the LC cells. Photochromic variation of the LC cells due to photoisomerization of the azo compound was investigated. After photopolymerization of the monomers inside the cholesteric LC cells, the centre wavelength of the reflected band of the incident light was found to be fixed and the reflected bandwidth was broadened, resulting in a red shift. A schematic representation of both the photoisomerization of the azo dopants and its effect on variation of twisting pitches is proposed. Real image recording was performed using 365 nm UV through a mask with text. The top and side views of the morphological network structures of a fabricated cholesteric LC cell were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. The results of this investigation demonstrated that RGB reflected colours of LC cells can easily be achieved through the addition of the menthyl-containing synthesized chiral compounds to nematic LCs. The addition of synthesized AzoM helped further in recording the patterns onto cholesteric LC films using 365 nm UV exposure.  相似文献

Chiral side-chain liquid-crystalline (LC) polysiloxanes containing isosorbide groups were graft copolymerised with poly(methylhydrogeno)siloxane, a chiral LC monomer 6-(4-methoxy-benzoyloxy)-hexahydro-furo[3,2-b]furan-3-yl 4'-(4-undec-10-enoyloxy-benzoyloxy)-biphenyl-4-yl adipate and a nematic LC monomer 4'-(4-methoxy-benzoyloxy)-biphenyl-4-yl 4-(2-undec-10-enoyloxy-ethoxy)-benzoate. The chemical structures and LC properties of the monomers and polymers were characterised by use of various experimental techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), element analyses (EA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarised optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). All the chiral LC polymers showed LC properties with very wide mesophase temperature ranges and the chiral component in the LC polymer systems lead to the appearance of a cholesteric phase. The polymers bearing most chiral LC monomer component showed smectic phases by reason of regular structures in the polymer systems. With the increase of another nematic LC monomer in the polymers, the regular polymer structures were destroyed because of different chemical structures between the two kinds of LC monomers, leading to the disappearance of the smectic arrangement.  相似文献

Blue phase (BP) stability of a chiral nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixture is dependent upon chemical structure as well as physical properties. In this study, the blue phase temperature range dependent on alkyl chain length was investigated in order to evaluate the relationship between blue phase stability and the molecular structures of four kinds of 4-n-alkyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl (n-OCB) homologue chiral nematic LC mixtures composed of rod-like nematic LCs. It was confirmed that the blue phase temperature range was strongly dependent upon the molecular parity, K 33/K 11 and the helical twist power of the n-OCB homologues chiral nematic LC mixtures.  相似文献

The phase of a liquid crystal (LC) changing from a nematic phase to a cholesteric (Ch) mesophase is achieved by adding different ratios of chiral dopants S811. By studying the transmission spectrum, we are able to measure the helical pitch in cholesteric phase. The pitch in the mixtures of nematic E7 and chiral dopants S811 as a function of the concentration of the dopant and temperature is investigated. The sensitivity of the selective reflection notch of the cholesteric phase to the thermal tuning depends strongly on the ratios of the chiral dopants. It reveals that the influence of temperature is more profound for those cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) which exhibit smectic A (SmA) at lower temperatures. When fitted using Keating's formula, the helical pitch calculated from our experimental results lies on the predicted curve. Optimised ratios of the mixture CLCs for the optimised reflection band with the specified wavelength ranging from 467 nm to 2123 nm are suggested.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A series of non-symmetric liquid crystal (LC) dimers with the same chiral core 1,2-propanediol (PD) have been synthesised, termed as ABBA-PD-TFBA, PBBA-PD-TFBA, ABA-PD-TFBA, PBA-PD-TFBA and AA-PD-TFBA, respectively, in which one of the two mesogenic groups, the fluorinated mesogenic unit, was kept fix and the other arm was different. The intermediate compounds and LC dimers were characterised by FTIR, 1H NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarised optical microscopy and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The results of the measurements indicated that ABBA-PD-TFBA, PBBA-PD-TFBA and ABA-PD-TFBA displayed optical activity and enantiotropic chiral nematic phase, and PBA-PD-TFBA was an enantiotropic nematic LC while AA-PD-TFBA was a monotropic LC, displaying both nematic phase and smectic A phase on cooling. The results indicated that PD was able to induce the chiral nematic phase, nevertheless, the rigidity of the mesogenic arm, the flexibility of the terminal group and even the type of the terminal chemical bond played an important effect on the thermal properties of the dimers, and even on the formation of the chiral nematic phase. It is also worth noting that C=C at the terminal helped to stabilise the LC phase.  相似文献

A series of new side‐chain cholesteric elastomers derived from cholesteryl 4‐(10‐undecylen‐1‐yloxy)‐4′‐ethoxybenzoate and phenyl 4,4′‐bis(10‐undecylen‐1‐yloxybenzoyloxy‐p‐ethoxybenzoate) was synthesized. The chemical structures of the monomers were confirmed by elemental analyses, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. The mesomorphic properties of elastomers were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarizing optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction measurements. The influence of the content of the crosslinking unit on the phase behavior of the elastomers was examined. Monomer M1 showed a cholesteric phase, and M2 displayed smectic and nematic phases. The elastomers containing <15 mol % of the crosslinking units revealed reversible mesomorphic phase transition, wide mesophase temperature ranges, and high thermal stability. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The photo-optical behaviour of two series of chiral photochromic acrylic copolymers with a chiral nematic phase has been studied. These copolymers contain identical chiral photochromic units, but have different structures of the phenyl benzoate mesogenic side groups which are responsible for the development of LC phases. This approach allowed us to examine specific features of the photo-optical behaviour of the copolymers as a function of the nature of the LC 'matrix' in which the cholesteric phase was induced. The action of UV irradiation was shown to lead to the E-Z isomerization of the chiral side groups and, as a consequence, to untwisting of the cholesteric helix of the copolymers. For copolymers of both series, the effective quantum yields of this photochemical process were calculated. In the case of copolymers in which the cholesteric mesophase is induced in a smectogenic matrix, the corresponding values of the quantum yield are lower and depend slightly on temperature. A plausible explanation of the above phenomena is suggested.

A family of a new hydrogen-bonded complexes based on comb-shaped LC copolymers containing the monomer units of cyanobiphenyl derivative and n-alkyloxy-4-oxybenzoic acid with a chiral dopant on the base of 4-pyridinecarboxylic acid and L -menthol, was prepared. At concentrations of chiral groups 1–25 mol %, the induction of cholesteric phase was observed. Temperature dependences of selective light reflection wavelengths were studied, and helix twisting power was calculated. Depending on the type of copolymer nematic matrix, this value is changed in the range from 12.1 to 19.6 µm−1. It was shown that an increase of a distance between the chiral dopant and the main polymer chain results in a lower values of helix twisting power. With respect to optical properties, the chiral nematic phase in the hydrogen-bonded complexes is comparable to classical cholesteric copolymers, in which the chiral group is covalently bound to polymer chain. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Seven symmetric liquid crystal (LC) dimers containing different chiral cores and LC arms have been synthesised, termed EPDA-(R,S)PD, TFBDA-(R,S)PD, TFBA-(R,S)PD, TFBDA-(R)PD, TFBA-(R)PD, TFBDA-IB and TFBA-IB, respectively. TFBDA-(R,S)PD, TFBA-(R,S)PD, TFBDA-(R)PD and TFBDA-IB displayed chiral smectic A (SmA*) phase, while EPDA-(R,S)PD, TFBA-(R)PD and TFBA-IB exhibited chiral nematic (N*) phase. The effects of flexible spacer, structural type of LC arms and the chirality of the cores on the thermal properties of the dimers and the formation of N* phase have been studied. The results indicated that the chiral core was prone to induce the N* phase in LC dimer that contained nematic arms although the chirality of the core is very weak, while for the smectic LC arms containing CF3 terminal, the removal of the flexible spacer between chiral core and rigid LC units was conducive to the formation of N* phase. For example, TFBDA-(R)PD and TFBDA-IB displayed SmA* phase, while TFBA-(R)PD and TFBA-IB exhibited N* phase. However TFBA-(R,S)PD did not display N* phase, which reminded us that the chirality of the core and the conformation of the dimer also played an influence in the formation of the LC phase.  相似文献

The synthesis is described of four new chiral liquid crystalline monomers (M2–M5 ) and their corresponding side‐chain homopolysiloxanes (P2–P5 ) containing menthyl groups. Chemical structures were characterised using FT‐IR or 1H NMR spectra, and specific optical rotations were evaluated with a polarimeter. The phase behaviour and mesomorphic properties of the new compounds were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarising optical microscopy, UV/visible/NIR spectrocopy and X‐ray diffraction. The monomers and homopolymers with more aryl segments showed noticeably lower specific optical rotation value. The monomers M2–M5 formed a cholesteric or blue phase when a flexible spacer was inserted between the rigid mesogenic core and the terminal menthyl groups by reducing the steric effect. M2–M5 revealed enantiotropic cholesteric phase. Moreover, M2 also exhibited a monotropic smectic A (SmA) phase, and M4 also exhibited a cubic blue phase on cooling. The selective reflection of light shifted to the long wavelength region with increasing rigidity of the mesogenic core for M2–M5 . P2–P5 exhibited SmA phases, and the mesogenic moieties were ordered in smectic orientation with their centres of gravity in planes. Melting or glass transition temperature and the clearing temperature increased, and the mesophase temperature range widened with increasing rigidity of the mesogenic core.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A series of symmetric liquid crystal (LC) dimers with the same chiral core (S)-1-phenylethane-1,2-diol ((S)-PE) have been synthesised, termed TBDA-(S)-PE, 3F3B-(S)-PE, 3F2B-(S)-PE, 1F3B-(S)-PE, 1F2B-(S)-PE, respectively. Chemical structures and LC properties of the five symmetric LC dimers were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectrometer (1H NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and polarised optical microscopy (POM). TBDA-(S)-PE displayed enantiotropic chiral smectic A (SmA*) phase while 3F3B-(S)-PE, 3F2B-(S)-PE, 1F2B-(S)-PE all displayed enantiotropic chiral nematic (N*) phase and 1F3B-(S)-PE displayed monotropic N* phase. The results indicated that the removal of the flexible spacers between the rigid mesogenic arm and the chiral core facilitated the formation of the N* phase. When the rigid mesogenic units are connected to the chiral core directly, the structure of the terminal fluorine group and the rigidity of the mesogenic unit played certain influence on the thermal properties of the LC dimers, but did not change the type of mesomorphic phase. Compared to 3F3B-(S)-PE and 1F3B-(S)-PE, 3F2B-(S)-PE and 1F2B-(S)-PE displayed wider LC ranges, respectively, suggesting molecular regularity had greater influence on LC-isotropic (I) transition temperature.  相似文献

A series of chiral side-chain liquid crystalline (LC) polysiloxanes bearing fluorinated mesogens were synthesized with a cholesteric LC monomer and a fluorinated nematic LC monomer. They were characterized by use of various experimental techniques, and effect of fluorinated mesogens on characteristic of LC polysiloxanes was studied as well. In photoluminescence spectra, a narrow and a broad peak occur at around 270-317 nm, originated, respectively, from fluorinated phenyl groups and the conjugated xenene structure. The specific rotation analysis of all polymers showed negative values, but absolute values were lower than those of the chiral monomers. All polymers showed smectic LC phase with very wide temperature ranges on heating and cooling cycles. Especially, only polymers bearing more fluorinated component exhibited smectic-cholesteric phase transition when they were heated. As the polymers contained more fluorinated mesogens, segregation of the fluorinated segment to the surface should occur at mesomorphic temperature. The highly ordered lamellar mesogen-siloxane matrix systems should be disturbed severely by separation of fluorinated mesogens, suggesting mesogenic orders transition from lamellar smectic to cholesteric phase.  相似文献

We simulate the alignment dynamics of cholesteric (chiral) rod-like liquid crystals by using a Landau-de Gennes (LdG) expression for microstructure evolution in response to flow. This study is motivated by recent advances in novel cholesteric nanorod dispersions. Prior work on the modelling of cholesterics has suffered from the restriction of helicity to only a single direction, often with a pre-imposed pitch, due to numerical difficulties. This has severely limited cholesteric modelling in regard to both accuracy and experimental relevance. Our simulations avoid this limitation. Relevant forces on rods include solvent-rod drag, nematic alignment, microstructure elasticity and chiral twist. Phase diagrams are developed to demonstrate the response of these systems to variations in chiral and flow forces. Our results indicate that for low shear rates, chiral and elastic forces prevent the rods from moving in response to flow. At high shear rates, the rods tumble and form unique transient structures (combinations of tumbling and cholesteric phases) as flow forces and chiral forces compete. Even if slight alignment is induced at the boundaries, the phase diagram substantially changes, chiefly by constraining the possible chiral phases. This work has immediate relevance to applications which exploit the optical properties of films solidified from cholesteric dispersions.  相似文献
