Eight series of chiral compounds with semi-fluorocarbon chains have been synthesized. The compounds were characterized by IR, 1H NMR, 19F NMR and mass spectroscopies and elemental analysis. Their phase transition behaviour was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. Their clearing points increase with an increase of the length of fluorocarbon chain. For a certain compound, when the terminal hydrogen atom in the semi-fluoroalkyl chain was substituted by a chlorine atom, both the clearing point and melting point were increased, and the thermal stability of the chiral smectic C (SmC*) phase was enhanced. However, the clearing point decreased and the melting point increased with the introduction of a triple bond into the core.  相似文献

Several molecules having long semi-fluoroalkyl chains have been synthesized, and their phase transition temperatures measured by texture observation in a polarizing microscope and DSC. The SmC phase is particularly favoured in this series, especially for compounds with a long semi-fluoroalkyl chain. It was found that when the terminal hydrogen atom of the semifluoroalkyl chain of one of the compounds (D) was substituted by a chlorine atom, the liquid crystalline sequence and ranges did not change; however, the clearing and melting points and TI-SmA and TSmA-SmC increased by nearly 10°C.  相似文献

Four series of new [1]benzothieno[3,2- b ][1]benzothiophene derivatives have been synthesized. In the non-chiral series a SmA phase occurs, while the chiral series exhibits a rather wide antiferroelectric SmC * A phase just below the SmA phase. The SmA-SmC * A phase transition has been studied using DSC and dielectric spectroscopy. In the SmC * A phase the spontaneous quantities have been measured. The tilt angle shows a typical temperature dependence and the values of spontaneous polarization are rather moderate. The length of the helical pitch increases on increasing the length of the non-chiral alkyl chain.  相似文献

Three partially fluorinated ferroelectric liquid crystals (4F4R, 4F5R and 7F3R) with biphenylyl benzoate rigid core have been investigated by frequency-dependent dielectric spectroscopy and electro-optic methods. Molecular structures of the compounds differ only by the length of the carbon chain and the number of oligomethylene spacers. 4F4R and 4F5R exhibit ferroelectric SmC* phase over a considerable temperature range and directly melts into isotropic phase, 4F4R also shows a ferroelectric type subphase. Only Goldstone mode (GM) relaxation is observed in these compounds, but no soft mode (SM). 7F3R exhibits both the SmC* and SmA* phases, has higher stability of SmC*. Both the GM and SM relaxations are observed in this case, signifying that SM relaxation is possible only when SmC* is formed on cooling from SmA*. Increase of dielectric strength and critical frequency with temperature, in all cases, has been explained in the light of generalised Landau model. Spontaneous polarisation is found to decrease with increasing flexibility, and optical tilt depends more on fluorination than on chain length.  相似文献

A successful approach in molecular design through fusing aromatic/heterocyclic rings for broadening the smectic C (SmC) phase and the synthesis of the first heterocyclic liquid crystalline (LC) molecules containing 3,7-disubstituted quinoline with one of the widest SmC phases are reported. Their naphthalene analogues are compared. The nitrogen atom in quinoline system introduces attractive forces to aid the formation of the tilted SmC phase and the flexible chain length also influences the tilted SmC phase effectively.  相似文献

Cobalt (II) phthalocyanines substituted with eight alkoxy chains in the peripheral (2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24) positions were prepared. The alkoxy chain length was varied between n-butyloxy (C4H9O) and n-octadecyloxy (C18H37O). Studies by polarizing optical microscopy and high temperature X-ray diffraction revealed that all the complexes are liquid crystalline and that they exhibit a hexagonal columnar mesophase (Colh). Transition enthalpies were determined by differential scanning calorimetry. The clearing point could only be observed for compounds with a chain length longer than C13H27O. Both the melting and clearing points decrease with increasing chain length. The transition temperatures of these discotic metallomesogens are higher than those of the corresponding metal-free phthalocyanines, but are comparable with those of the corresponding copper (II) compounds. The thermal decomposition of the compounds was studied by thermogravimetry.  相似文献

A series of ionic liquid crystals with an alkoxy biphenyl unit tethered via an alkyl spacer to a guanidinium head group were synthesised and the mesomorphic properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD; WAXS and SAXS). Whereas all symmetrical guanidinium chlorides with the same chain lengths in alkyl tail and spacer displayed enantiotropic SmA2 phases, monotropic SmC2 phases with 1–2 K temperature range were only formed for chain lengths ≥ C10. Shifting the calamitic core more closely to the ionic head group by decreasing the tether length and simultaneously increasing the terminal alkyl chain improved the stability of both SmA and SmC phases considerably and led to enantiotropic SmC phases for the guanidinium chloride with C14 alkyl tail and C6 spacer. An even more pronounced effect was detected during anion exchange. Bromide, iodide, hexafluorophosphate, thiocyanate and triflate suppressed any SmC phase, whereas tetrafluoroborate behaved similar to chloride maintaining the SmC phase. However, acetate stabilised the SmC phase at the expense of the SmA phase. Based on temperature-dependant XRD measurements, a bilayer structure was proposed.  相似文献

Two new chiral series, with benzoate cores and monofluoro-substitution in positions 2 and 3 of the first phenyl ring near the chiral chain, have been synthesized and characterized. The mesomorphic properties have been analysed by optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and electro-optical measurements. The first series (Ic) displays a very rich polymorphism including SmA, SmC*α, SmC*, SmC*FI, SmC*A phases, whereas the second (Ib) does not exhibit the SmC*A phase, and moreover only displays the SmA phase for short alkoxy chains. The effect of the position of the fluoro substituent and the influence of the alkoxy chain length on the mesomorphic behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

The influence of the molecular parameters of side-on fixed liquid crystal polymers (LCP), namely the spacer length, the aliphatic tail length and the proportion of mesogenic groups ('dilution' effect), on the mesomorphic, thermodynamic and structural properties of the nematic and smectic C phases has been studied. This shows in particular the stabilization of the SmC phase on increasing the terminal chain lengths. Moreover, this paper provides evidence for an original behaviour in the SmC organization of side-on LCP with a nonstructural monotonous evolution of the thermodynamic and properties with the 'dilution'. Finally, a comparison with side-end LCP can be established : the question of the participation of the polymer backbone in the smectic organization in side-on LCP is raised.  相似文献

The synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of novel chiral Schiff's base dimers containing the 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring are reported. The length of the terminal S-alkyl chain has been varied. All the compounds synthesised were thermally stable and exhibited enantiotropic mesomorphism, showing either SmC*–SmA–TGB–N*–BP or SmC*–SmA phase sequence.  相似文献

The thermal behaviour and the mesogenic properties of liquid-crystalline side chain polymers with the structure are described with n = 3, 6, 8 or 11 and Z = -COO-, -CONH- or -N=N-. The polymers were made by radical chain polymerization. Most of them exhibit smectic phases, nematic phases were not observed. The amide linkage which has not yet been described as a structural element in such polymers gives rise to polymers of high polarity and high glass transition temperatures (Tg). In all cases the amide polymers produced the highest Tg values, the ester polymers showing the lowest. The azo polymers exhibited the largest mesophase ranges and the highest clearing temperatures (Tc1) of all the materials investigated. Whereas the Tc1 values for the azopolymers are nearly independent of the length of the spacer those of the amide and ester polymers show rising clearing points with increasing spacer length.  相似文献

A homologous series of chiral thioesters, hexyl (2S)-2-[6-(4-alkanoyloxyphenyl)benzoyloxy-2'-naphthyl]thiopropionates, HnPBNTP (n=7-11) was synthesized, and the mesophases and electro-optical properties were studied. All the materials possess a ferroelectric SmC* phase, which was confirmed by the switching current behaviour. It was found that compounds with a shorter alkyl chain length (n=7-9) displayed SmA* and SmC* phases, while, compounds with a longer alkyl chain length (n=10 and 11), displayed the SmC* phase exclusively. Spontaneous polarization and apparent tilt angle were also measured. The maximum Ps values are in the range 15-26 nC cm-2, and the maximum θ values are in the range 23°-28°.  相似文献

New meta -substituted homologous three-ring mesogens, the 4-(3- n -decyloxyphenyliminomethyl) phenyl 4- n -alkyloxybenzoates, have been synthesized, which are non-linear due only to the attachment of one of the alkyloxy groups in a meta -position. The mesophases were studied by optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electro-optical and dielectric measurements. Unusual phase behaviour was observed on varying the length of the terminal chain. The most interesting finding is the occurrence of two polymorphic tilted smectic phases designated as SmC 1 and SmC 2 . The existence of these phases was revealed by calorimetric studies and also from the pronounced difference in optical textures. It was shown from NMR measurements that the molecular orientation changes from a synclinic to an anticlinic arrangement in the SmC 1 to SmC 2 phase transition. It has also been shown, using NMR, that the SmC 1 →SmC 2 phase transition in these compounds is accompanied by a conformational change in the molecular fragment containing the aromatic ring with the meta -substituted terminal alkyloxy chain. This conformational change is linked to a change in the shape of the molecules and leads to a different packing of the molecules within the layers of the SmC 2 phase. From dielectric measurements an increase by a factor of two was detected in the molecular mobility at the transition into the low temperature SmC 2 phase. This finding supports a change in the packing as result of conformational changes.  相似文献

New series of lactic acid derivatives with alkyl terminal chain have been synthesised and their mesomorphic properties studied. We have varied the length of chiral and non-chiral terminal alkyl chains and found that prolonging both chains has a strong effect on the SmA*–SmC* phase transition. Most of the new materials exhibit only paraelectric SmA* phase; for homologues with a longer non-chiral chain (m ≥ 10), the ferroelectric (SmC*) phase appears below the SmA* on cooling and persists down to a room temperature. The role of the chiral terminal chain in the molecule is quite opposite – only its short length supports the existence of ferroelectric phase. Additionally, a hexatic phase appeared below the SmA*–SmC* phase sequence for several homologues at low temperatures. All materials have been studied using standard experimental techniques (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), texture observations, polarisation and tilt angle measurements, etc.). Liquid crystalline properties of new materials have been compared with the previously prepared and studied lactic acid derivatives.  相似文献

Two new series of ferroelectric liquid crystals with a keto group attached to the molecular core and a lactate unit as a chiral centre were synthesized and studied. All the compounds exhibit the paraelectric SmA phase and the ferroelectric SmC* phase over very wide temperature ranges and down to room temperature. The main characteristics of the chiral ferroelectric SmC* phase, namely spontaneous polarization, spontaneous tilt angle, and dielectric constant, have been measured to establish their relationship to the length of the terminal chains. The influence of the chiral and non-chiral chain lengths on the helix pitch length is also discussed.  相似文献
