Viscous dissipation effect on heat transfer characteristics of a rectangular microchannel is studied. Flow is governed by the Navier–Stokes equations with the slip flow and temperature jump boundary conditions. Integral transform technique is applied to derive the temperature distribution and Nusselt number. The velocity distribution is taken from literature. The solution method is verified for the case where viscous dissipation is neglected. It is found that, the viscous dissipation is negligible for gas flows in microchannels, since the contribution of this effect on Nu number is about 1%. However, this effect should be taken into account for much more viscous flows, such as liquid flows. Neglecting this effect for a flat microchannel with an aspect ratio of 0.1 for Br=0.04 underestimates the Nu number about 5%.  相似文献

In this study, a two-dimensional steady state simultaneously developing laminar flow inside a micro-tube is investigated numerically under slip flow conditions. The first and second-order slip flow models have been implemented for the case where the viscous dissipation and axial conduction are included and a constant wall temperature boundary condition is specified. The results are obtained for several combinations of the Knudsen number Kn, the coefficient β and the Brinkman number Br. The study reveals a significant impact of slip flow and temperature jump on the hydrodynamic and thermal fields. A comparison of the first and second-order slip flow shows a considerable variation of the hydrodynamic flow and a weak impact on the thermal field particularly when the flow is fully developed.  相似文献

Liquid–liquid two-phase flow in microchannels is capable of boosting the heat removal rate in cooling processes. Formation of different two-phase flow patterns which affect the heat transfer rate is numerically investigated here in a T-junction containing water-oil flow. For this purpose, the finite element method (FEM) is applied to solve the unsteady two-phase Navier–Stokes equations along with the level set (LS) equation in order to capture the interface between phases. It is shown that the two-phase flow pattern in microchannels depends on the flow initial condition which causes hysteresis effect in two-phase flow. In this study, the hysteresis is observed in flow pattern and consequently in the heat transfer rate. The effect of wall contact angle on the hydrodynamics and heat transfer in the microchannel is investigated to gain useful insight into the hysteresis phenomenon. It is observed that the hysteresis is significant in super-hydrophilic microchannels, while it disappears at the contact angle of 75°. The effect of water to oil flow rate ratio (Qwat/Qoil) on the heat transfer is also studied. The flow rate ratio has a negligible effect on the Nusselt number (Nu) in the dripping regime, while the Nu decreases with an increase of Qwat/Qoil in the co-flow regime. The thickness of the oil film, velocity, and temperature distribution are studied in the co-flow regime. It is revealed that the normalized slip velocity reduces at higher values of Qwat/Qoil, which causes a reduction in the averaged Nu. In dripping regimes, higher flow rate ratios lead to a more frequent generation of droplet/slugs at a smaller size. The passage of the slugs or droplets increases the local Nu. Larger droplets generated at lower flow rate ratios cause a larger increase in the local Nu than smaller droplets. The temperature and velocity field around the droplets are also illustrated to investigate the heat transfer improvement. The generated vortex at the tip of the oil jet causes an increase in the velocity and Nu on the water side.  相似文献

An adaptation of the classical Graetz methodology is applied to investigate the thermal development of forced convection in a parallel plate channel or a circular tube filled by a porous medium saturated by a rarefied gas, with walls held at constant heat flux. The Brinkman model is employed. The analysis leads to expressions for the local Nusselt number Nu as functions of the dimensionless longitudinal coordinate and the Darcy number. It is found that an increase in the velocity slip coefficient generally increases Nu by a small or moderate amount (but the circular tube at large Darcy number is an exception) while an increase in the temperature slip coefficient reduces Nu by a more substantial amount. These trends are uniform as the longitudinal coordinate varies.  相似文献

For the simple geometries of Couette and Poiseuille flows, the velocity profile maintains a similar shape from continuum to free molecular flow. Therefore, modifications to the fluid viscosity and slip boundary conditions can improve the continuum based Navier–Stokes solution in the non‐continuum non‐equilibrium regime. In this investigation, the optimal modifications are found by a linear least‐squares fit of the Navier–Stokes solution to the non‐equilibrium solution obtained using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. Models are then constructed for the Knudsen number dependence of the viscosity correction and the slip model from a database of DSMC solutions for Couette and Poiseuille flows of argon and nitrogen gas, with Knudsen numbers ranging from 0.01 to 10. Finally, the accuracy of the models is measured for non‐equilibrium cases both in and outside the DSMC database. Flows outside the database include: combined Couette and Poiseuille flow, partial wall accommodation, helium gas, and non‐zero convective acceleration. The models reproduce the velocity profiles in the DSMC database within an L2 error norm of 3% for Couette flows and 7% for Poiseuille flows. However, the errors in the model predictions outside the database are up to five times larger. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Turbulent flow and convective heat transfer of a nanofluid made of Al2O3 (1–4 vol.%) and water through a square duct is numerically studied. Single-phase model, volumetric concentration, temperature-dependent physical properties, uniform wall heat flux boundary condition and Renormalization Group Theory k-ε turbulent model are used in the computational analysis. A comparison of the results with the previous experimental and numerical data revealed 8.3 and 10.2 % mean deviations, respectively. Numerical results illustrated that Nu number is directly proportional with Re number and volumetric concentration. For a given Re number, increasing the volumetric concentration of nanoparticles does not have significant effect on the dimensionless velocity contours. At a constant dimensionless temperature, increasing the particle volume concentration increases the size of the temperature profile. Maximum value of dimensionless temperature increases with increasing x/Dh value for a given Re number and volumetric concentration.  相似文献

Laminar film boiling on a vertical fin is formulated as a conjugate phenomenon and investigated for no slip and zero shear conditions at the vapor-liquid interface. The results indicate that the combined effects of thermal leakage at the ends of the fin and radiation from its lateral face have profound influence on the average Nusselt number. Further, from the formulation it can be shown that the isothermal condition can be deduced by suitably changing the boundary conditions of the fin at its extremities. The results of the investigation are rendered into dimensionless functional relationships between the average Nusselt numberNu m, fin parameterM, radiation parameterN R and temperature ratio term Ψ. The proposed equation can be made use of in design calculations.  相似文献

A flow and heat transfer numerical simulation is performed for a 2D laminar incompressible gas flow through a constricted microchannel in the slip regime with constant wall temperature. The effects of rarefaction, creeping flow, first order slip boundary conditions and hydrodynamically/thermally developing flow are assumed. The effects of Knudsen number and geometry on thermal and hydrodynamic characteristics of flow in a constricted microchannel are explored. SIMPLE algorithm in curvilinear coordinate is used to solve the governing equations including continuity, energy and momentum with the temperature jump and velocity slip conditions at the solid walls in discretized form. The resulting velocity and temperature profiles are then utilized to obtain the microchannel C f Re and Nusselt number as a function of Knudsen number and geometry. The results show that Knudsen number has declining effect on the C f Re and Nusselt number in the constricted microchannel. In addition, the temperature jump on wall and slip velocity increase with increasing Knudsen number. Moreover, by decreasing the throttle area, the fluid flow characteristics experience more intense variations in the constricted region. To verify the code a comparison is carried out with available results and good agreement is achieved.  相似文献

This paper investigates the unsteady boundary layer stagnation-point flow and heat transfer over a linearly shrinking sheet in the presence of velocity and thermal slips. Similarity solutions for the transformed governing equations are obtained and the reduced equations are then solved numerically using fourth order Runge-Kutta method with shooting technique. The numerical results show that multiple solutions exist for certain range of the ratio of shrinking velocity to the free stream velocity (i.e., α) which again depend on the unsteadiness parameter β and the velocity slip parameter (i.e., δ). An enhancement of the velocity slip parameter δ causes more increment in the existence range of similarity solution. Fluid velocity at a point increases increases with the increase in the value of the velocity slip parameter δ, resulting in a decrease in the temperature field. The effects of the velocity and thermal slip parameters, unsteadiness parameter (β) and the velocity ratio parameter (α) on the velocity and temperature distributions are computed, analyzed and discussed. The reported results are in good agreement with the available published results in the literature.  相似文献

Laminar forced convection of gaseous slip flow in a circular micro-channel filled with porous media under local thermal equilibrium condition is studied numerically using the finite difference technique. Hydrodynamically fully developed flow is considered and the Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer model is used to model the flow inside the porous domain. The present study reports the effect of several operating parameters (Knudsen number (Kn), Darcy number (Da), Forchhiemer number (Γ), and modified Reynolds number ) on the velocity slip and temperature jump at the wall. Results are given in terms of the velocity distribution, temperature distribution, skin friction , and the Nusselt number (Nu). It is found that the skin friction is increased by (1) decreasing Knudsen number, (2) increasing Darcy number, and (3) decreasing Forchheimer number. Heat transfer is found to (1) decrease as the Knudsen number, or Forchheimer number increase, (2) increase as the Peclet number or Darcy number increase.  相似文献

The steady-state, similarity solutions of the flow of an upper-convected Maxwell fluid through a tube with a porous wall are constructed by asymptotic and numerical analyses as functions of the direction of flow through the tube, the amount of elasticity in the fluid, as measured by the Deborah number De, and the degree of fluid slip along the tube wall. Fluid slip is assumed to be proportional to the local shear stress and is measured by a slip parameter β that ranges between no-slip (β = 1) and perfect slip (β = 0). The most interesting results are for fluid injection into the tube. For β = 1, the family of flows emanating from the Newtonian limit (De = 0) has a limit point where it turns back to lower values of De. These solutions become asymptotic to De = 0) and develop an O(De) boundary layer near the tube wall with singularly high stresses matched to homogeneous elongational flow in the core. This solution structure persists for all nonzero values of the slip parameter. For β ≠ 1, a family of exact solutions is found with extensional kinematics, but nonzero shear stress convected into the tube through the wall. These flows differ for low De from the Newtonian asymptote only by the absence of the boundary layer at the tube wall. Finite difference calculations evolve smoothly between the Newtonian-like and extensional solutions because of approximation error due to under-resolution of the boundary layer. The radial gradient of the axial normal stress of the extensional flow is infinite at the centerline of the tube for De > 1; this singularity causes failure of the finite difference approximations for these Deborah numbers unless the variables are rescaled to take the asymptotic behavior into account.  相似文献

Consideration is given to the influence of viscous dissipation on the thermal entrance region laminar pipe flow heat transfer with convective boundary condition. The Eigenfunction series expansion technique is employed to solve the governing energy equation. The results for axial distributions of dimensionless bulk and wall temperatures, local Nusselt number as well as modified local Nusselt number are presented graphically forNu 0 =0.1, 2, and 100. The complicated variations of conventional local Nusselt number is due to the inappropriate definition of conventional heat transfer coefficient in this problem. A modified local heat transfer coefficient, based on the difference of bulk fluid temperature and wall temperature, is introduced. Its value can clearly indicate the extent and the direction of heat exchange between the fluid in the pipe and the ambient. The effects of outside Nusselt number are also investigated. Significant viscous dissipation effects have been observed for large Br.  相似文献

Forced convection flow in a microchannel with constant wall temperature is studied, including viscous dissipation effect. The slip-flow regime is considered by incorporating both the velocity-slip and the temperature-jump conditions at the surface. The energy equation is solved for the developing temperature field using finite integral transform. To increase βv Kn is to increase the slip velocity at the wall surface, and hence to decrease the friction factor. Effects of the parameters βv Kn, β, and Br on the heat transfer results are illustrated and discussed in detail. For a fixed Br, the Nusselt number may be either higher or lower than those of the continuum regime, depending on the competition between the effects of βv Kn and β. At a given βv Kn the variation of local Nusselt number becomes more even when β becomes larger, accompanied by a shorter thermal entrance length. The fully developed Nusselt number decreases with increasing β irrelevant to βv Kn. The increase in Nusselt number due to viscous heating is found to be more pronounced at small βv Kn.  相似文献

This study is motivated by understanding the connections between the vortical structures in impinging jets and the wall heat transfer. Of particular interest are: (1) examining how the stage of evolution of vortex pairing in the jet might influence the wall heat transfer, and (2) establishing correlations between the vortex characteristics and the Nusselt number (Nu) distribution. To this end, CFD simulations are conducted of three simplified model problems involving the interaction of isolated axisymmetric vortex rings with a flat, constant-temperature, heated wall. The cases represent three scenarios of vortex-wall interaction: before (Case I), during (Case II) and after (Case III) pairing. The results show that when two vortices concurrently interact with the wall and undergo pairing (Case II), a significant instantaneous enhancement in Nu is attained in comparison to that associated with a single vortex interacting with the wall (Cases I and III). However, Case II also leads to the largest subsequent decay in Nu enhancement due to the formation of a particularly strong secondary vortex. In all cases, a deterioration in Nu, relative to unsteady diffusion, is observed simultaneously with the enhancement. Notwithstanding this deterioration, the net effect of vortex-wall interaction on the heat transfer remains positive with Case II producing the highest heat transfer rate. An analysis is conducted to establish the connection between the instantaneous maximum and minimum Nu, the circulation and the radial and the wall-normal location of the core-centers of the vortices, the thermal boundary layer thickness, the boundary layer separation location and the wall shear stress.  相似文献

The effects of an applied magnetic field on the steady, laminar, low speed plane Couette flow of a slightly rarefied and electrically conducting gas are studied. Consideration is given to the slip-flow regime, wherein the gas rarefaction begins to play its important role. The generally accepted method of analysis for slip flows is utilized, i.e. the continuum magnetohydrodynamic equations of motion are used throughout the gas, together with the first and the second order slip velocity and temperature jump boundary conditions. Considerations are further given to (1) the case of zero electric field and (2) the case of a nonconducting channel in which the net current across the channel is zero.  相似文献

Coupled heat transfer between laminar forced convection along and conduction inside a flat plate wall is theoretically studied. The laminar convective boundary layer is analyzed by employing the integral technique. The energy equations for the fluid and the plate wall are combined under the condition of the continuity in the temperature and heat flux at the fluid-solid interface. The analysis results in a simple formal solution. Expressions have been obtained for calculating local Nusselt number, wall heat flux and temperature along the plate, all are functions of the local Brun number, Br x , which is a measure of the ratio of the thermal resistance of the plate to that of the convective boundary layer. The results indicate that for Br x ≥0.15, neglecting the plate resistance will results in an error of more than 5% in Nusselt number. Comparison of the present solution with other previous studies has been made. The solution may be of a considerable theoretical and practical interest. Received on 19 August 1998  相似文献

A free convertion flow of an optically dense viscous incompressible fluid along a vertical thin circular cylinder has been studied with effect of radiation when the surface temperature is uniform. With appropriate transformations, the boundary layer equations governing the flow are reduced to local nonsimilarity equations. Solutions of the governing equations are obtained employing the implicit finite difference methods together with Keller box scheme as well the local nonsimilarity method with second order truncation for all ξ (nondimensional transverse curvature parameter) in the interval [0,10] and are expressed in terms of local Nusselt number for a range of values of the pertinent parameters. Effects of pertinent parameters, such as, the radiation parameter, R d , the surface temperature parameter, θ w , taking Prandtl number, Pr, equals 0.7 on the velocity and temperature field are also presented graphically. From the solution it is seen that increase of R d , or θ w leads to increase in the local rate of heat transfer coefficients. Results obtained by both the methods are obtained in excellent agreement between each other upto ξ = 10.  相似文献

Transport phenomena occurring during the heating of a non-agitated liquid in a closed cylindrical container were studied. Existing literature on this and analogous problems is briefly reviewed. Special attention is devoted to studies on natural convection in environments of non-uniform temperature. Our experimental work revealed the existence of a boundary layer flow at the vertical sidewall of the container, together with a stratified core in the upper part and a perfectly mixed, unstratified region in the lower part of the container. For the heat transfer rate a dimensionless correlation is found revealing Nu to be approximately proportional to (GrPr)1/4. From the observed flow patterns and temperature profiles a simplified mathematical model is developed, with which the temperature stratification in the liquid during heating could be simulated. The model may be applied to conversion calculations of a first order chemical reaction (e.g. destruction of micro-organisms).  相似文献

The effects of partial slip on the steady flow and heat transfer of an electrically conducting, incompressible, third grade fluid past a horizontal plate subject to uniform suction and blowing is investigated. Two distinct heat transfer problems are studied. In the first case, the plate is assumed to be at a higher temperature than the fluid; and in the second case, the plate is assumed to be insulated. The momentum equation is characterized by a highly nonlinear boundary value problem in which the order of the differential equation exceeds the number of available boundary conditions. Numerical solutions for the governing nonlinear equations are obtained over the entire range of physical parameters. The effects of slip, magnetic parameter, non-Newtonian fluid characteristics on the velocity and temperature fields are discussed in detail and shown graphically. It is interesting to find that the velocity and the thermal boundary layers decrease with an increase in the slip, and as the slip increases to infinity, the flow behaves as though it were inviscid.  相似文献

Experimental and numerical analysis of a turbulent wall jet on the heat transfer downstream of a non-confined backward-facing step are presented. Several configurations are studied to analyse the influence of the upstream flow and the height of the step. An infrared camera and a hot wire were used to visualize a temperature map and measure the instantaneous velocity, respectively. The main objective was to visualize and compare both the fluid flow and the heat transfer, by studying the skin friction coefficient Cf and the Nusselt number Nud, respectively. The latter is obtained by the calculation of the heat transfer coefficient, evaluated by inverse method. Both experimental data and numerical approach provide good agreement regarding the flow structure and thermal data for measuring the position and the value of characteristics scales in the recirculation zone. A correlation between the maximum heat transfer Numax and the maximum Reynolds number Remax is presented. Similarities and differences are highlighted in the paper compared to confined configurations.  相似文献
