The twist elastic constant of the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-octyl-4'-cyano-biphenyl (8CB) and the azimuthal anchoring energy at the SiO-nematic interface have been measured by using the torsion pendulum technique. The twist elastic constant of 8CB is found to be systematically larger than that measured by the Freedericksz transition technique. The azimuthal anchoring energy is found to decrease rapidly as the nematic-isotropic transition temperature is approached. This behaviour is analogous to that already reported by us for the nematogen 5CB and can be interpreted by extending the Berreman model of the anchoring energy at a grooved interface.  相似文献

High pretilt angles, polar anchoring energy (out of plane-tilt), and surface ordering in the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) were investigated on rubbed organic solvent soluble polyimide (PI) surfaces with a helical backbone structure and trifluoromethyl moieties. It was found that the pretilt angle of 5CB is about 15° in the wide rubbing region of rubbed soluble PI surfaces with trifluoromethyl moieties attached to the lateral benzene rings. It is suggested that the microscopic surface structure of the polymer contributes to the LC pretilt angle generation at the surface. Also, the polar anchoring energy of 5CB is dependent on the molecular structure of these unidirectionally rubbed soluble PI surfaces. The polar anchoring strength of 5CB on rubbed soluble PI surfaces is as weak with trifluoromethyl moieties attached to the lateral benzene rings weak as when the trifluoromethyl moieties are attached to the polymer backbone. Finally, the polar anchoring energy of 5CB strongly depends on the surface ordering of rubbed soluble PI surfaces.  相似文献

We have used a surface forces apparatus to measure the normal force between two solid curved surfaces confining a film of nematic liquid crystal (5CB, 4'-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl) under hybrid planar-homeotropic anchoring conditions. Upon reduction of the surface separation D, we measured an increasingly repulsive force in the range D = 35-80 nm, reaching a plateau in the range D = 10-35 nm, followed by a short-range oscillatory force at D < 5 nm. The oscillation period was comparable to the cross-sectional diameter of the liquid crystal molecule and characteristic of a configuration with the molecules parallel to the surfaces. These results show that the director field underwent a confinement-induced transition from a splay-bend distorted configuration at large D, which produces elastic repulsive forces, to a uniform planar nondegenerate configuration with broken homeotropic anchoring, which does not produce additional elastic forces as D is decreased. These findings, supported by measurements of the birefringence of the confined film at different film thicknesses, provide the first direct observation of an anchoring transition on the nanometer scale.  相似文献

4'-n-Pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) is a room temperature nematic liquid crystal with a high positive dielectric anisotropy and a high chemical stability. Many experimental results concerning the elastic and dielectric constants of 5CB are available in the literature, although there is often no satisfactory agreement between the experimental data obtained by different groups, especially as far as the dielectric constants are concerned. Furthermore, no detailed investigation of the temperature dependence of the elastic and dielectric constants close to the nematic-isotropic transition temperature TNI has yet been reported. In this paper, we report the measurement of the elastic and dielectric constants of 5CB, and the temperature behaviour close to TNI has been investigated in detail. The experiment consists in the measurement of the director deformation induced by an electric field using simultaneously both a dielectric and an optical method. The simultaneous use of these two methods provides an indirect check on the reliability of the measurements. Special attention has been devoted to control possible sources of uncertainty. In particular, the effects of finite anchoring energy and of finite pretilt angle have been considered. The temperature dependence of the anisotropy of the refractive indices is also obtained in the experiment.  相似文献

The washing effects on liquid crystal (LC) alignment capability in a NLC, 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface containing the trifluoromethyl moiety were studied. The extrapolation length de of 5CB on the rubbed PI surface decreases with the rubbing strength RS. Also, the large extrapolation length de of 5CB for washing with IPA was measured at RS=114 mm. The polar anchoring energy of 5CB on the rubbed PI surface was decreased by the washing process; it increased with the rubbing strength RS on the PI surface. The surface order parameter SS of 5CB for all the washing processes is smaller than for the non-washing process. Consequently, the polar anchoring energy and surface order parameter Ss in 5CB are largely attributed to washing effects.  相似文献

A phenomenological free energy is used to describe the stable ordering of nematic liquid crystals confined to supramicron spherical cavities. In particular the effects of the saddle splay elastic constant, K24, on the equilibrium structures and phase diagram of droplets with homeotropic surface anchoring are discussed. Some structures are illustrated by the corresponding simulated polarization microscope textures. Possibilities for an experimental determination of the saddle-splay elastic constant and surface anchoring strength by studying the radial-axial structural transition in such droplets are analysed. It is shown that the K24 term in the elastic free energy stabilizes a deformed droplet structure even in the limit of the zero anchoring strength.  相似文献

We have investigated the relationship between the polar anchoring strength and surface ordering in a nematic liquid crystal on two kinds of weakly rubbed polyimide (PI) surfaces. The polar anchoring strength of 5CB on weakly rubbed PI surfaces, both with and without side chains, increases with rubbing strength and with decreasing temperature. The surface order parameter of 5CB on these surfaces increases with rubbing strength, suggesting that the polar anchoring strength on rubbed PI surfaces is related to the surface order parameter.  相似文献

Dynamic simulations of the isotropic–nematic phase transformation of liquid crystal droplets with homeotropic surface anchoring are found to predict chiral symmetry-breaking dynamics. These observations occur when using material parameters for pentyl-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) but not with the single elastic constant approximation for this material, which is frequently used in simulations. The twisting dynamic process occurs during the relaxation of the domain from an unstable radial texture to a stable uniform texture and involves simultaneous defect loop motion and twisting of the bulk nematic texture.  相似文献

A high pretilt angle for the nematic liquid crystal, 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), was observed on rubbed polythiophene (PTP) surfaces having alkyl chains with more than ten carbon atoms. We consider that this is due to a surface-excluded volume effect caused by the long alkyl chains between the LC molecules and the PTP surfaces. The polar anchoring strength in 5CB on rubbed PTP surfaces with long alkyl chains has also been successfully evaluated. The extrapolation length de of 5CB increases with increasing alkyl chain lengths above the seven carbons of alkyl chain R7; that is, it may be attributed to the high pretilt angle. An extrapolation length of 5 nm is observed in 5CB for the seven carbons alkyl chain R7 on the PTP surface; this indicates high anchoring strength.  相似文献

The anchoring of nematic liquid crystals on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed by the chemisorption of semifluorinated thiols or alkanethiols on gold is compared and contrasted. The planar anchoring of 4-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) observed in the past on SAMs formed from alkanethiols is also observed on SAMs formed from semifluorinated thiols. The azimuthal anchoring of 5CB, however, differs on these two types of surfaces: nematic 5CB anchored on SAMs formed from alkanethiols has a grainy appearance due to the formation of domains with sizes 10 mum whereas 5CB forms large domains ( 100 mum) with diffuse branches emerging from defects of strength 1/2 when anchored on SAMs formed from semifluorinated thiols. Mixed (two-component) SAMs formed from either short and long semifluorinated thiols or short and long alkanethiols cause homeotropic anchoring of 5CB. We discuss these results in light of the known differences in the structure of SAMs formed from alkanethiols and semifluorinated thiols, i.e. the tilt of the chains and conformational freedom (flexibility) of the chains within these SAMs.  相似文献

The influence of temperature and impurities on the surface orientation of nematic 5CB on obliquely SiO evaporated glass plates has been studied. We observe on cooling a continuous anchoring transition from the planar alignment to the tilted one. The experimental data have been interpreted by using elastic models developed by Durand and coworkers in which the surface order parameter can vary in space, close to the surface.  相似文献

The polar anchoring strength and pretilt angle generation in nematic liquid crystals (NLCs), on three kinds of rubbed polyimide (PI) surfaces, were investigated. The pretilt angle generated in 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) is large compared with ZLI-4792 (a fluorinated mixture type NLC) for all rubbed PI surfaces. The high pretilt angle in 5CB is attributed to a much larger birefringence and much larger perpendicular component of permittivity. The polar anchoring energy of ZLI-4792 is high compared with 5CB on all rubbed PI surfaces for a weak rubbing strength. It is suggested that the high anchoring energy of ZLI-4792 may be attributed to the low NLC pretilt angle.  相似文献

Liquid crystal (LC) droplets dispersed in isotropic media are of significant interest for scientific community and great importance for industries. The confinement can generate many fascinating LC director configurations and enable important practical applications. With tangential anchoring condition at the droplet surface, theoretically there are several possible configurations: bipolar, twisted bipolar, escaped toroidal, toroidal and so on. Bipolar configuration is usually observed in droplets made from common LCs while the toroidal configuration is rarely observed and it is hard to create especially in thermotropic LCs. Their realisations depend on the splay, bend and twist elastic constants ratio, and anchoring condition of the LC and polymer interface. We constructed thermotropic LCs with abnormally small bend elastic constants, with which stable toroidal configuration were successfully created. We provide a brand new method to create toroidal droplet by simply varying the bend elastic constant. We observed the transition from bipolar configuration to toroidal configuration. We performed a detailed study of the texture of toroidal droplets.  相似文献

The influence of washing processes on the liquid crystal (LC) aligning capability on rubbed polyimide (PI) surfaces containing the CONH moiety were investigated. The induced optical retardation from a non-washing process on a rubbed PI surface is larger than when the washing processes are included. The pretilt angles in 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) were decreased by the washing process. The polar anchoring energy of 5CB was decreased by the washing processes on a weakly rubbed PI surface. The surface order parameter SS of 5CB strongly depends on the rubbing strength and washing materials. Consequently, the LC aligning capability may be strongly attributed to the polymer characteristics and the washing processes.  相似文献

We study the spontaneous size selection in lyotropic cholesteric (W/O) and thermotropic nematic (O/W) liquid crystal emulsions. The droplet sizes have been characterized by dynamic light scattering, which indicates a narrow monomodal distribution of droplets achieved spontaneously even without emulsion filtration. Anchoring of the director, provided by the chosen surfactant on the interface, may generate a topological defect inside the droplet. Below the critical radius R = K/W, determined by the ratio of Frank elastic and the surface anchoring constants, the effective anchoring strength is weak and droplets are not topologically charged; this allows them to coalesce freely, depleting the size distribution in this range. Large droplets possess a topological charge of +1 and present a high elastic energy barrier for pair coalescence; the resulting size distribution is skewed, with R > R, and effectively frozen.  相似文献

Using the in situ measurements of the surface potential built across the evaporated liquid crystalline 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) films on metal electrodes with different work functions, we studied the cooperative molecular field effect (CMFE) that assists carrier injection from electrodes and the induced orientational reordering in evaporated liquid crystalline molecules on metals. The surface potential increased, and then became constant after the 5CB monomolecular layer was formed. It was shown that the CMFE accompanying orientational reordering accounts for the metal work function dependence of the surface potential. Finally, the orientational reordering is discussed in terms of the anchoring energy.  相似文献
