Dielectrophoresis has been widely used to focus, trap, concentrate, and sort particles in microfluidic devices. This work demonstrates a continuous separation of particles by size in a serpentine microchannel using negative dielectrophoresis. Depending on the magnitude of the turn-induced dielectrophoretic force, particles travelling electrokinetically through a serpentine channel either migrate toward the centerline or bounce between the two sidewalls. These distinctive focusing and bouncing phenomena are utilized to implement a dielectrophoretic separation of 1 and 3 μm polystyrene particles under a DC-biased AC electric field of 880 V/cm on average. The particle separation process in the entire microchannel is simulated by a numerical model.  相似文献

Electrokinetically driven microfluidic devices that are used for biological cell/particle manipulation (e.g., cell sorting, separation) involve electrokinetic transport of these particles in microchannels whose dimension is comparable with particles' size. This paper presents an analytical study on electrokinetic transport of a charged spherical particle in a charged parallel-plate microchannel. Under the thin electric double-layer assumption, solutions in closed-form solutions for the particle velocity and disturbed electrical and fluid velocity fields are obtained for plane-symmetric (along the channel centerline) and asymmetric (off the channel centerline) motions of a sphere in a parallel-plate microchannel. The effects of relative particle size and eccentricity (i.e., off the centerline distance) on a particle's translational and rotational velocities are analyzed.  相似文献

The electrophoretic motion of two charged colloidal spheres with very thin electrical double layers in a constant applied electric field along their line of centers is considered. The particles may differ in radius and in zeta potential at the surface. The electrostatic and hydrodynamic governing equations are solved in the quasi-steady situation using bipolar coordinates and the electrophoretic velocities of particles are calculated for various cases. The interaction effect between particles can be very significant when the distance between particle surfaces gets close to zero. The particle with smaller zeta potential is speeded up by the motion of the other, which is retarded at the same time by the motion of the former one, if the two spheres have unequal zeta potentials of the same electrical sign. For two particles of different signs in zeta potential, motions of both are hindered by each other. The influence of the interaction between particles in general is stronger on the smaller one than on the larger one. For the special case of two electrophoretic spheres with identical zeta potentials, there is no particle interaction for all particle sizes and separations.  相似文献

The bounded electrophoretic motion of a cylindrical particle in a circular cylindrical microchannel is explored for two cases: (1) the particle is located on the centerline of a channel (concentrically), with a symmetric wall boundary condition since gap width is constant throughout; and (2) the particle is at an eccentric location in the channel, with an asymmetric boundary condition set by the walls. The objective is to determine the effect of different boundary conditions, geometries, and physical properties on the velocity and orientation of the cylinder with respect to the boundary. A theoretical model for the motion of the cylinder is presented and the problem is solved numerically. The steady-state simulations show that the velocity of the cylinder is reduced at small gap widths for the concentric case, but the velocity is increased at small gap widths for the eccentric case. When the cylinder is angled with respect to the horizontal in the symmetric case or is near the boundary in the asymmetric case, vertical and rotational components of velocity are predicted. In such cases, transient simulations are appropriate for most accurately representing particle motion. Two such simulations are included herein and show both horizontal and vertical translation plus rotation of the particle as a function of time.  相似文献

Particle focusing in planar geometries is essentially required in order to develop cost-effective lab-on-a-chips, such as cell counting and point-of-care (POC) devices. In this study, a novel method for sheathless particle focusing, called "Elasto-Inertial Particle Focusing", was demonstrated in a straight microchannel. The particles were notably aligned along the centerline of the straight channel under a pressure-driven flow without any additional external force or apparatus after the addition of an elasticity enhancer: PEO (poly(ethylene oxide)) (~O(100) ppm). As theoretically predicted (elasticity number: El≈O(100)), multiple equilibrium positions (centerline and corners) were observed for the viscoelastic flow without inertia, whereas three-dimensional particle focusing only occurred when neither the elasticity nor the inertia was negligible. Therefore, the three-dimensional particle focusing mechanism was attributed to the synergetic combination of the elasticity and the inertia (elasticity number: El≈O(1-10)). Furthermore, from the size dependence of the elastic force upon particles, we demonstrated that a mixture of 5.9 and 2.4 μm particles was separated at the exit of the channel in viscoelastic flows. We expect that this method can contribute to develop the miniaturized flow cytometry and microdevices for cell and particle manipulation.  相似文献

The migration of a spherical particle immersed in a viscoelastic liquid flowing in a microchannel with a triangular cross-section is investigated by direct numerical simulations under inertialess conditions. The viscoelastic fluid is modeled through two constitutive equations to investigate the effect of the second normal stress difference and the resulting secondary flows on the migration phenomenon. The results are presented in terms of trajectories followed by the particles released at different initial positions over the channel cross-section in a wide range of Weissenberg numbers and confinement ratios. Particles suspended in a fluid with a negligible second normal stress difference migrate toward the channel centerline or the closest wall, depending on their initial position. A much more complex dynamics is found for particles suspended in a fluid with a relevant second normal stress difference due to the appearance of secondary flows that compete with the migration phenomenon. Depending on the Weissenberg number and confinement ratio, additional equilibrium positions (points or closed orbits) may appear. In this case, the channel centerline becomes unstable and the particles are driven to the corners or “entrapped” in recirculation regions within the channel cross-section. The inversion of the centerline stability can be exploited to design efficient size-based separation devices.  相似文献

Saliva and blood plasma are non-Newtonian viscoelastic fluids that play essential roles in the transport of particulate matters (e.g., food and blood cells). However, whether the viscoelasticity of such biofluids alters the dynamics of suspended particles is still unknown. In this study, we report that under pressure-driven microflows of both human saliva and blood plasma, spherical particles laterally migrate and form a focused stream along the channel centerline by their viscoelastic properties. We observed that the particle focusing varied among samples on the basis of sampling times/donors, thereby demonstrating that the viscoelasticity of the human biofluids can be affected by their compositions. We showed that the particle focusing, observed in bovine submaxillary mucin solutions, intensified with the increase in mucin concentration. We expect that the findings from this study will contribute to the understanding of the physiological roles of viscoelasticity of human biofluids.  相似文献

We present a new method of measuring the electrophoretic mobility of a particle in a concentrated suspension. The method is used to measure the electrophoretic mobility of PMMA particles (diameter 10 microm) suspended in a mixture of liquid hydrocarbons. The particle volume fraction of the suspension is varied from 0 up to 0.30 and the resulting variation of the electrophoretic mobility is discussed. The suspending liquid is such that its refractive index is very close to that of the particles. Thus the suspension is almost transparent and it is possible to follow through a microscope the motion of one particle. The suspension is subjected to a low-frequency electric field (0.5 Hz). The cell containing the suspension is mounted on a piezoelectric crystal. The displacement that compensates for the particle motion (when the particle image is steady) is determined.  相似文献

This paper considers the electrophoretic motion of a spherical particle in an aqueous electrolyte solution in a T-shaped rectangular microchannel, where the size of the channel is close to that of the particle. This is a complicated transient process where the electric field, the flow field, and the particle motion are coupled together. A theoretical model was developed to investigate the influences of the applied electric potentials, the zeta potentials of the channel and the particle, and the size of the particle on the particle motion. A direct numerical simulation method using the finite element method is employed. This method employs a generalized Galerkin finite element formulation that incorporates both equations of the fluid flow and equations of the particle motion into a single variational equation where the hydrodynamic interactions are eliminated. The ALE method is used to track the surface of the particle at each time step. The numerical results show that the electric field in the T-shaped microchannel is influenced by the presence of the particle, and that the particle motion is influenced by the applied electric potentials and the zeta potentials of the channel and the particle. The path of the particle motion is dominated by the local electric field and the ratio of the zeta potential of the channel to that of the particle. The particle's velocity is also dependent on its size in a small channel.  相似文献

The electrokinetic focusing and the resultant accelerated electrophoretic motion of polystyrene particles and red blood cells were visualized in microfluidic cross-channels. The experimentally measured width of the focused stream and the measured velocity increase of particles and cells at different voltage ratios follow the proposed analytical formula within the experimental error. The attained velocity increase is insensitive to the particle size, particle property (i.e., particle or cell), and particle trajectory. By solving the electrical potential field in the cross-channel at the experimental conditions, we demonstrate that the squeezed electrical field lines in the channel intersection determine the shape of the focused stream, and the nonuniform distribution of axial electrical field strength underlies the variation of particle/cell electrophoretic velocity through the focusing region. However, the dielectrophoretic force resulting from the nonuniform electrical field in the intersection seems to push the acceleration region of particles and cells slightly in the downstream direction. We have also achieved the single particle/cell dispensing by instantly triggering an electrical pulse perpendicular to the focused particulate flow in a double-cross microchannel. The electrokinetic manipulation of particle/cell in microchannels demonstrated in this work can be used for developing integrated lab-on-a-chip devices for studies of cells.  相似文献

We propose here a new method for continuous concentration and classification of particles in microfluidic devices, named hydrodynamic filtration. When a particle is flowing in a microchannel, the center position of the particle cannot be present in a certain distance from sidewalls, which is equal to the particle radius. The proposed method utilizes this fact, and is performed using a microchannel having multiple side branch channels. By withdrawing a small amount of liquid repeatedly from the main stream through the side channels, particles are concentrated and aligned onto the sidewalls. Then the concentrated and aligned particles can be collected according to size through other side channels (selection channels) in the downstream of the microchannel. Therefore, continuous introduction of a particle suspension into the microchannel enables both particle concentration and classification at the same time. In this method, the flow profile inside a precisely fabricated microchannel determines the size limit of the filtered substances. So the filtration can be performed even when the channel widths are much larger than the particle size, without the problem of channel clogging. In this study, concentrations of polymer microspheres with diameters of 1-3 microm were increased 20-50-fold, and they were collected independently according to size. In addition, selective enrichment of leukocytes from blood was successfully performed.  相似文献

The inertial forces acting on two cylinders and two spheres have been calculated. The cylinders or spheres are of the same radius and zeta potential, and arbitrarily oriented in an electric field. It is found that when two particles are aligned perpendicular to the direction of the electric field, the force between them along the line of the centers is attractive. When they are along the direction of the electric field, the force between them along the line of the centers is repulsive. On a pair of arbitrarily oriented particles, the force perpendicular to the line of the centers tends to rotate the particles around the midpoint between the particle centers such that the pair is aligned normal to the applied electric field. The stable equilibrium orientation of a pair of particles and the attractive interaction forces between the particles when they are stably orientated may give rise to aggregation of particles during electrophoretic motion of a suspension.  相似文献

The formation of a line of equally spaced particles at the centerline of a microchannel, referred as “particle ordering,” is desired in several microfluidic applications. Recent experiments and simulations highlighted the capability of viscoelastic fluids to form a row of particles characterized by a preferential spacing. When dealing with non-Newtonian fluids in microfluidics, the adherence condition of the liquid at the channel wall may be violated and the liquid can slip over the surface, possibly affecting the ordering efficiency. In this work, we investigate the effect of wall slip on the ordering of particles suspended in a viscoelastic liquid by numerical simulations. The dynamics of a triplet of particles in an infinite cylindrical channel is first addressed by solving the fluid and particle governing equations. The relative velocities computed for the three-particle system are used to predict the dynamics of a train of particles flowing in a long microchannel. The distributions of the interparticle spacing evaluated at different slip coefficients, linear particle concentrations, and distances from the channel inlet show that wall slip slows down the self-assembly mechanism. For strong slipping surfaces, no significant change of the initial microstructure is observed at low particle concentrations, whereas strings of particles in contact form at higher concentrations. The detrimental effect of wall slip on viscoelastic ordering suggests care when designing microdevices, especially in case of hydrophobic surfaces that may enhance the slipping phenomenon.  相似文献

A novel dielectrophoresis switching with vertical electrodes in the sidewall of microchannels for multiplexed switching of objects has been designed, fabricated and tested. With appropriate electrode design, lateral DEP force can be generated so that one can dynamically position particulates along the width of the channel. A set of interdigitated electrodes in the sidewall of the microchannels is used for the generation of non-uniform electrical fields to generate negative DEP forces that repel beads/cells from the sidewalls. A countering DEP force is generated from another set of electrodes patterned on the opposing sidewall. These lateral negative DEP forces can be adjusted by the voltage and frequency applied. By manipulating the coupled DEP forces, the particles flowing through the microchannel can be positioned at different equilibrium points along the width direction and continue to flow into different outlet channels. Experimental results for switching biological cells and polystyrene microbeads to multiple outlets (up to 5) have been achieved. This novel particle switching technique can be integrated with other particle detection components to enable microfluidic flow cytometry systems.  相似文献

Particle coagulation behavior can affect particle formation and dispersion in vehicle plumes. An Eulerian particle transport model combining a Realizable k–? model, Brownian, gradient, and turbulent coagulation has been developed to analyze particle coagulation behavior in an underground garage under moving-vehicle conditions. The results show that prominent coagulation of nanoparticles occurs within a limited region, which is at a distance of less than 0.2 m in the vertical direction and no more than 0.4 m in the exhaust direction from a given vehicle. The coagulation of small particles with diameters of less than 130 nm is dominated by Brownian motion, while gradient and turbulent coagulation significantly affect the coagulation of particles with median diameters of 420 nm and larger diameters of 600–950 nm, respectively. The influence of turbulent coagulation increases as vehicle speed and particle size increase. The half-time due to coagulation is approximately two times and 10–20 times larger than the corresponding value due to dilution in the regions less than 0.2 and 1.5 m along the tailpipe centerline, respectively. It is demonstrated that coagulation has considerable influence on particle dispersion in the region less than 0.2 m from the tailpipe, compared with dilution.  相似文献

Herein, we proposed a strategy for controlling the particle focusing position in Dean‐coupled elasto‐inertial flows via adjusting the polymer concentration of viscoelastic fluids. The physics behind the control strategy was then explored and discussed. At high polymer concentrations, the flowing particles could be single‐line focused exactly at the channel centerline under the dominated elastic force. The center‐line focusing in our spiral channel may employed as a potential pretreatment scheme for microflow cytometry detection. With further decreasing polymer concentrations, the particles would shift into the outer channel region under the comparable competition between inertial lift force, elastic force and Dean drag force. Finally, the observed position‐shifting was successfully employed for particle concentration at a throughput much higher than most existing elasto‐inertial microfluidics.  相似文献

Many biocolloids, biological cells and micro-organisms are soft particles, consisted with a rigid inner core covered by an ion-permeable porous membrane layer. The electrophoretic motion of a soft spherical nanoparticle in a nanopore filled with an electrolyte solution has been investigated using a continuum mathematical model. The model includes the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations for the ionic mass transport and the modified Stokes and Brinkman equations for the hydrodynamic fields outside and inside the porous membrane layer, respectively. The effects of the “softness” of the nanoparticle on its electrophoretic velocity along the axis of a nanopore are examined with changes in the ratio of the radius of the rigid core to the double layer thickness, the ratio of the thickness of the porous membrane layer to the radius of the rigid core, the friction coefficient of the porous membrane layer, the fixed charge inside the porous membrane layer of the particle and the ratio of the radius of the nanopore to that of the rigid core. The presence of the soft membrane layer significantly affects the particle electrophoretic mobility.  相似文献

The startup of electrophoretic motion in a suspension of spherical colloidal particles, which may be charged with constant zeta potential or constant surface charge density, due to the sudden application of an electric field is analytically examined. The unsteady modified Stokes equation governing the fluid velocity field is solved with unit cell models. Explicit formulas for the transient electrophoretic velocity of the particle in a cell in the Laplace transforms are obtained as functions of relevant parameters. The transient electrophoretic mobility is a monotonic decreasing function of the particle-to-fluid density ratio and in general a decreasing function of the particle volume fraction, but it increases and decreases with a raise in the ratio of the particle radius to the Debye length for the particles with constant zeta potential and constant surface charge density, respectively. On the other hand, the relaxation time in the growth of the electrophoretic mobility increases substantially with an increase in the particle-to-fluid density ratio and with a decrease in the particle volume fraction but is not a sensitive function of the ratio of the particle radius to the Debye length. For specified values of the particle volume fraction and particle-to-fluid density ratio in a suspension, the relaxation times in the growth of the particle mobility in transient electrophoresis and transient sedimentation are equivalent.  相似文献

Elastic nature of the viscoelastic fluids induces lateral migration of particles into a single streamline and can be used by microfluidic based flow cytometry devices. In this study, we investigated focusing efficiency of polyethylene oxide based viscoelastic solutions at varying ionic concentration to demonstrate their use in impedimetric particle characterization systems. Rheological properties of the viscoelastic fluid and particle focusing performance are not affected by ionic concentration. We investigated the viscoelastic focusing dynamics using polystyrene (PS) beads and human red blood cells (RBCs) suspended in the viscoelastic fluid. Elasto‐inertial focusing of PS beads was achieved with the combination of inertial and viscoelastic effects. RBCs were aligned along the channel centerline in parachute shape which yielded consistent impedimetric signals. We compared our impedance‐based microfluidic flow cytometry results for RBCs and PS beads by analyzing particle transit time and peak amplitude at varying viscoelastic focusing conditions obtained at different flow rates. We showed that single orientation, single train focusing of nonspherical RBCs can be achieved with polyethylene oxide based viscoelastic solution that has been shown to be a good candidate as a carrier fluid for impedance cytometry.  相似文献

In the present study, controlled protein adsorption on a rigid silica microparticle is investigated numerically using classical Langmuir and two-state models under electrokinetic flow conditions. The instantaneous particle locations are simulated along a straight microchannel using an arbitrary Lagrangian−Eulerian framework in the finite element method for the electrophoretic motion of the charged particle. Within the scope of the parametric study, the strength of the external electric field (E), particle diameter (Dp), the zeta potential of the particle (ζp), and the location of the microparticle away from the channel wall (H) are systematically varied. The results are also compared to the data of pressure-driven flow having a parabolic flow profile at the inlet whose maximum magnitude is set to the particle's electrophoretic velocity magnitude. The validation studies reveal that the code developed for the particle motion in the present simulations agrees well with the experimental results. It is observed that protein adsorption can be controlled using electrokinetic phenomena. The plug-like flow profile in electrokinetics is beneficial for a microparticle at every spatial location in the microchannel, whereas it is not valid for the pressure-driven flow. The electric field strength and the zeta potential of the particle accelerate the protein adsorption. The wall shear stress and shear rate are good indicators to predict the adsorption process for electrokinetic flow.  相似文献
