Three quantitative flow classification parameters have been studied in the context of Tanner and Huilgol’s suggestion of strong and weak flows. Seen in this context, the different types of streamlines possible for general 3-D flows furnish no indication with respect to the flow strength. This is in total contrast to 2-D flows, where the type of the streamline and the strength of the flow go hand in hand. Astarita’s [J Non-Newton Fluid Mech, 6:69–76, 1979] flow classification parameter takes care of this fact and, if properly generalized, can be applied to more general flows: Two other flow classification parameters also have their basis in homogeneous 2-D flows, but their generalization leads, for general flows, to nonuniqueness and other unacceptable results. For 3-D flows, none of the parameters can quantitatively be used in general, and additional parameters, with their basis outside the 2-D flow regime, seem to be called for.

We reported some dynamic and viscometric data on an Australia strong flour-water dough. In oscillatory shear flow experiments, we found the linear viscoelastic strain limit is extremely low, of O(10–3), consistent with other published data on doughs. The relaxation spectrum derived from the dynamic data is broad, indicating the blend nature of dough. In the start-up of a simple shear flow, we found the shear stress increases nonlinearly with time to a peak value and then decreases rapidly, with no steady-state response. The concept of steady-state viscosity is not very meaningful here, unless the strain at which the measurements are taken is also specified. The stress peaks are strain-rate dependent; but they occur at a strain of O(10), for the strong flour/water dough used, over four decades of strain rates. The experimental data were used to construct a phenomenological model for dough, consisting of an hyperelastic term (representing the elastic gluten network of permanent cross-linked long chain polymers), and a viscoelastic contribution (representing the suspension of starch globules and other long-chain components in dough that are not parts of the permanent cross-linked gluten network). The model predictions compared favourably with experimental data in oscillatory and shear flows.  相似文献

A two-time-scale closure model for compressible flows previously developed is extended to turbulent Rayleigh-Taylor and Richtmyer-Meshkov driven flows where mixing coexists with mean pressure gradients. Two model coefficients are calibrated with the help of Canuto-Goldman's model. For several Rayleigh-Taylor configurations, it is shown that the characteristic lengths scale as t 2 while the kinetic energies and spectral transfers behave as t 2 and t, respectively. The computed phenomenological coefficients of Youngs' scaling law are compared with experimental data ones. Comparisons with Youngs' three-dimensional numerical simulation (The Physics of Fluids A 3 (1991) 1312) are also performed. Finally three shock tube experiments, where the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability initiates the mixing, are simulated. The mixing thickness evolution is well reproduced while the turbulence levels seem to be overestimated with such first order models. The capability of the two-time-sale model to recover available data for different turbulent flows allows us to conclude to a more universal behavior in comparison with single-time-scale models. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In the present paper we study the effect of rigid boundary on the propagation of torsional waves in a homogeneous layer over a semi-infinite heterogeneous half-space, where the heterogeneity is both in rigidity and density. The present study demonstrates that torsional waves can propagate in the layer. The velocities of torsional waves have been calculated numerically as a functions of KH, (where K is the wave number and H is the thickness of the layer) and are presented in a number of graphs. It is also observed that, for a layer over a homogeneous half-space, the velocity of torsional waves does not coincide with that of Love waves in the presence of the rigid boundary whereas it does at the free boundary.  相似文献

The boundary layer structure of oscillatory shallow open channel flows has been studied in a wide flume. Fluorescence solution was released at a porous rough bed through a diffuser covered by gravel of 0.5 cm grain size. A planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) system was used to visualise the dye plumes in both vertical and horizontal planes for a qualitative understanding of the roles of large-scale flow structures in mass transport. A variety of tests were conducted for a range of oscillatory periods (30–240 s), water depths (3–16 cm) and velocity amplitudes (0.027–0.325 m/s), which cover a wide range of oscillatory flows with Reynolds numbers Re a varied from 0.3 × 104 (laminar) to 2.1 × 106 (fully turbulent). For quantitative investigation, a novel technique, namely combined laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and 2D laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) (LIF/LDV), was developed and used to measure the velocity and solute concentration simultaneously in a vertical plane over 50 cycles. From the dye plumes revealed by the PLIF in transitional flows, there are different patterns of flow structure and solute transport with three representative stages of acceleration, deceleration and flow reversal. In the acceleration stage, turbulence was suppressed with dye layers adhering to the surface with little vertical mass transport. In the deceleration stage, flame-like turbulent structures occurred when turbulence generation was prominent. This was investigated quantitatively by recording the percentage occurrence of the adhered smooth layers per cycle. For those smooth bed cases with Re a < 1.8 × 105, the adhered smooth dye layers type of boundary layer occupied 100% of the oscillation period. Over a sufficiently high Re a , a rough bed can generate fully turbulent oscillatory flows without the appearance of adhering dye layers. Between these two extremes, a transitional flow regime occurs in a wide range of flow conditions: Re a > 2.7 × 104 over the rough bed and Re a > 8.3 × 106 over a smooth bed.  相似文献

Consider inviscid fluids in a channel {-1\leqq y\leqq1}{\{-1\leqq y\leqq1\}} . For the Couette flow u 0 = (y, 0), the vertical velocity of solutions to the linearized Euler equation at u 0 decays in time. Whether the same happens at the non-linear level is an open question. Here we study issues related to this problem. First, we show that in any (vorticity) Hs(s < \frac32){H^{s}\left(s<\frac{3}{2}\right)} neighborhood of Couette flow, there exist non-parallel steady flows with arbitrary minimal horizontal periods. This implies that nonlinear inviscid damping is not true in any (vorticity) Hs(s < \frac32){H^{s}\left(s<\frac{3}{2}\right)} neighborhood of Couette flow for any horizontal period. Indeed, the long time behaviors in such neighborhoods are very rich, including nontrivial steady flows and stable and unstable manifolds of nearby unstable shears. Second, in the (vorticity) ${H^{s}\left(s>\frac{3}{2}\right)}${H^{s}\left(s>\frac{3}{2}\right)} neighborhoods of Couette flow, we show that there exist no non-parallel steadily travelling flows \varvecv(x-ct,y){\varvec{v}\left(x-ct,y\right)} , and no unstable shears. This suggests that the long time dynamics in ${H^{s}\left(s>\frac{3}{2}\right)}${H^{s}\left(s>\frac{3}{2}\right)} neighborhoods of Couette flow might be much simpler. Such contrasting dynamics in H s spaces with the critical power s=\frac32{s=\frac{3}{2}} is a truly nonlinear phenomena, since the linear inviscid damping near Couette flow is true for any initial vorticity in L 2.  相似文献

In this article we discuss the reduced basis method (RBM) for optimal control of unsteady viscous flows. RBM is a reduction method in which one can achieve the versatility of the finite element method or another for that matter and gain significant reduction in the number of degrees of freedom. The essential idea in this method is to define a reduced order subspace spanned by few basis elements and then obtain the solution via a Galerkin projection. We present several ways to define this subspace. Feasibility of the approach is demonstrated on two boundary control problems in cavity and wall bounded channel flows. Control action is effected through boundary surface movement on part of the solid wall. Application of RBM to the control problems leads to finite dimensional optimal control problems which are solved using Newton's method. Through computational experiments we demonstrate the feasibility and applicability of the reduced basis method for control of unsteady viscous flows.  相似文献

The paper's focus is the calculation of unsteady incompressible 2D flows past airfoils. In the framework of the primitive variable Navier–Stokes equations, the initial and boundary conditions must be assigned so as to be compatible, to assure the correct prediction of the flow evolution. This requirement, typical of all incompressible flows, viscous or inviscid, is often violated when modelling the flow past immersed bodies impulsively started from rest. Its fulfillment can however be restored by means of a procedure enforcing compatibility, consisting in a pre‐processing of the initial velocity field, here described in detail. Numerical solutions for an impulsively started multiple airfoil have been obtained using a finite element incremental projection method. The spatial discretization chosen for the velocity and pressure are of different order to satisfy the inf–sup condition and obtain a smooth pressure field. Results are provided to illustrate the effect of employing or not the compatibility procedure, and are found in good agreement with those obtained with a non‐primitive variable solver. In addition, we introduce a post‐processing procedure to evaluate an alternative pressure field which is found to be more accurate than the one resulting from the projection method. This is achieved by considering an appropriate ‘unsplit’ version of the momentum equation, where the velocity solution of the projection method is substituted. A new approach for the solution of the steady incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in a domain bounded in part by a free surface is presented. The procedure is based on the finite difference technique, with the non‐staggered grid fractional step method used to solve the flow equations written in terms of primitive variables. The physical domain is transformed to a rectangle by means of a numerical mapping technique. In order to design an effective free solution scheme, we distinguish between flows dominated by surface tension and those dominated by inertia and viscosity. When the surface tension effect is insignificant we used the kinematic condition to update the surface; whereas, in the opposite case, we used the normal stress condition to obtain the free surface boundary. Results obtained with the improved boundary conditions for a plane Newtonian jet are found to compare well with the available two‐dimensional numerical solutions for Reynolds numbers, up to Re=100, and Capillary numbers in the range of 0≤Ca<1000. This paper deals with a critical evaluation of various finite element models for low-viscosity laminar incompressible flow in geometrically complex domains. These models use Galerkin weighted residuals UVP, continuous penalty, discrete penalty and least-squares procedures. The model evaluations are based on the use of appropriate tensor product Lagrange and simplex quadratic triangular elements and a newly developed isoparametric Hermite element. All of the described models produce very accurate results for horizontal flows. In vertical flow domains, however, two different cases can be recognized. Downward flows, i.e. when the gravitational force is in the direction of the flow, usually do not present any special problem. In contrast, laminar flow of low-viscosity Newtonian fluids where the gravitational force is acting in the direction opposite to the flow presents a difficult case. We show that only by using the least-squares method in conjunction with C1-continuous Hermite elements can this type of laminar flow be modelled accurately. The problem of smooth isoparametric mapping of C1 Hermite elements, which is necessary in dealing with geometrically complicated domains, is tackled by means of an auxiliary optimization procedure. We conclude that the least-squares method in combination with isoparmetric Hermite elements offers a new general-purpose modelling technique which can accurately simulate all types of low-viscosity incompressible laminar flow in complex domains.  相似文献

A numerical investigation is performed for the constant property laminar flow of air in the space between a pair of disks clamped co-axially on a central hub and co-rotating in a stationary cylindrical enclosure. Both two- and three-dimensional flow conditions are examined in relation to the interdisk spacing, H, and the disk angular velocity, Ω. Two interdisk spacings are considered, corresponding to aspect ratios Γ = 0.186 and 0.279 (with Γ = H/(R2+aR), where R2 is the disk radius, a is the disk rim–enclosure wall clearance, and R is the hub radius). A range of rotational speeds encompassing the transition from axisymmetric two-dimensional steady flow to non-axisymmetric three-dimensional unsteady flow are considered for various values of the Reynolds number, Re (with $ Re=\Omega R_2^2/v $, where v is the kinematic viscosity of air). Axisymmetric calculations are first performed for both aspect ratios in the range 3858≤Re≤23 150. Fully three-dimensional calculations are then performed for the configuration with Γ = 0.186 and Re = 23 150, and for the configuration with Γ = 0.279 and Re = 7715, 15 430 and 23 150. The axisymmetric calculations performed with Γ = 0.186 confirm many known features of the flow, including the transition from a steady flow to an oscillatory periodic regime. This occurs at ≈Re = 23 150 for a configuration with a/H = 0, and at ≈Re = 14 670 for one with a/H = 0.28 and a finite disk thickness (b/H = 0.2). Three-dimensional calculations performed for Γ = 0.186 with a/H = 0 and Re = 23 150 reveal a circumferentially periodic flow pattern with eight foci of intensified axial component of vorticity. The axisymmetric calculations performed with Γ = 0.279 and Re > 7715 yield a novel, non-unique steady solution for the velocity field that is asymmetric with respect to the interdisk mid-plane. No experimental verification of this finding exists to date, but similar situations are known to arise in the context of anomalous modes of the Taylor–Couette flow. Relaxing the axisymmetry constraint allows this flow to evolve to an oscillatory three-dimensional regime of increasing irregularity with increasing rotational speed. In this case, the number of foci of intensified axial vorticity varies with time, ranging from six at Re = 7715 to between six and eight at Re = 23 150. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This article is devoted to the study of the propagations of the nonlinear water waves on the shear flows. Assuming μ=kh is small andε/μ 2O(1), and the base flow is uniformly sheared, the modified Boussinesq equation is obtained. We calculate propagations of the single solitary wave with vorticity Γ=0,>0 and <0. The influences of the vorticity are manifested. At the end examples of the interactions of two solitary waves, moving in opposite and the same directions, are given. Besides the phase shift, there also occur second wavelets after head-on collision. The project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China  相似文献

We study the initial boundary value problem of two-dimensional viscous Boussinesq equations over a bounded domain with smooth boundary. We show that the equations have a unique classical solution for H 3 initial data and the no-slip boundary condition. In addition, we show that the kinetic energy is uniformly bounded in time.  相似文献

A pseudo-similarity solution is obtained for the flow of an incompressible fluid of second grade past a wedge with suction at the surface. The non-linear differential equation is solved using quasi-linearization and orthonormalization. The numerical method developed for this purpose enables computation of the flow characteristics for any values of the parameters K, a and b, where K is the dimensionless normal stress modulus of the fluid, a is related to the wedge angle and b is the suction parameter. A significant effect of suction on the wall shear stress is observed. The present results match exactly those from an earlier perturbation analysis for Kx2a ? 0·01 but differ significantly as Kx2a increases.  相似文献

We investigate the solvability of the instationary Navier–Stokes equations with fully inhomogeneous data in a bounded domain W ì \mathbbRn \Omega \subset {{\mathbb{R}}^{n}} . The class of solutions is contained in Lr(0, T; Hb, qw (W))L^{r}(0, T; H^{\beta, q}_{w} (\Omega)), where Hb, qw (W){H^{\beta, q}_{w}} (\Omega) is a Bessel-Potential space with a Muckenhoupt weight w. In this context we derive solvability for small data, where this smallness can be realized by the restriction to a short time interval. Depending on the order of this Bessel-Potential space we are dealing with strong solutions, weak solutions, or with very weak solutions.  相似文献

A planar analog of conical flows is considered: an inviscid incompressible fluid flow around a wedge tip. A class of conical flows is found where vorticity is transported along streamlines by the potential component of velocity. Problems of a wave “locked” in the corner region and of a flow accelerating along the rib of a dihedral angle are considered. By analogy with an axisymmetric quasi-conical flow, a planar quasi-conical flow of the fluid is determined, namely, the flow inside and outside the region bounded by tangent curves described by a power law. Conditions are found where vorticity and swirl produce a significant effect. An approximate solution of the problem of the fluid flow inside a “zero” angle is obtained. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 48, No. 2, pp. 57–65, March–April, 2007.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the accuracy and efficiency of discontinuous Galerkin spectral method simulations of under‐resolved transitional and turbulent flows at moderate Reynolds numbers, where the accurate prediction of closely coupled laminar regions, transition and developed turbulence presents a great challenge to large eddy simulation modelling. We take full advantage of the low numerical errors and associated superior scale resolving capabilities of high‐order spectral methods by using high‐order ansatz functions up to 12th order. We employ polynomial de‐aliasing techniques to prevent instabilities arising from inexact quadrature of nonlinearities. Without the need for any additional filtering, explicit or implicit modelling, or artificial dissipation, our high‐order schemes capture the turbulent flow at the considered Reynolds number range very well. Three classical large eddy simulation benchmark problems are considered: a circular cylinder flow at ReD=3900, a confined periodic hill flow at Reh=2800 and the transitional flow over a SD7003 airfoil at Rec=60,000. For all computations, the total number of degrees of freedom used for the discontinuous Galerkin spectral method simulations is chosen to be equal or considerably less than the reported data in literature. In all three cases, we achieve an equal or better match to direct numerical simulation results, compared with other schemes of lower order with explicitly or implicitly added subgrid scale models. The solvability in Sobolev spaces is proved for divergence form second order elliptic equations in the whole space, a half space, and a bounded Lipschitz domain. For equations in the whole space or a half space, the leading coefficients a ij are assumed to be only measurable in one direction and have locally small BMO semi-norms in the other directions. For equations in a bounded domain, additionally we assume that a ij have small BMO semi-norms in a neighborhood of the boundary of the domain. We give a unified approach of both the Dirichlet boundary problem and the conormal derivative problem. We also investigate elliptic equations in Sobolev spaces with mixed norms under the same assumptions on the coefficients.  相似文献
