Field studies indicate that Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) communication signals vary with the social situation in which they occur [S. Green, "Variation of vocal pattern with social situation in the Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata): A field study," in Primate Behavior, edited by L. A. Rosenblum (Academic, New York, 1975), Vol. 4]. A significant acoustic property of the contact calls produced by these primates is the temporal position of a frequency peak within the vocalization, that is, an inflection from rising to falling frequency [May et al., "Significant features of Japanese macaque communication sounds: A psychophysical study," Anim. Behav. 36, 1432-1444 (1988)]. The experiments reported here are based on the hypothesis that Japanese macaques derive meaning from this temporally graded feature by parceling the acoustic variation inherent in natural contact calls into two functional categories, and thus exhibit behavior that is analogous to the categorical perception of speech sounds by humans. To test this hypothesis, Japanese macaques were trained to classify natural contact calls by performing operant responses that signified either an early or late frequency peak position. Then, the subjects were tested in a series of experiments that required them to generalize this behavior to synthetic calls representing a continuum of peak positions. Demonstration of the classical perceptual effects noted for human listeners suggests that categorical perception reflects a principle of auditory information processing that influences the perception of sounds in the communication systems not only of humans, but of animals as well.  相似文献

The audiograms of three Japanese macaques and seven humans were determined in a free-field environment using loudspeakers. The monkeys and humans were tested using tones ranging from 8 Hz to 40 kHz and 4 Hz to 22.4 kHz, respectively. At a level of 60 dB sound pressure level the monkeys were able to hear tones extending from 28 Hz to 37 kHz with their best sensitivity of 1 dB occurring at 4 kHz. The human 60-dB hearing range extended from 31 Hz to 17.6 kHz with a best sensitivity of -10 dB at 2 and 4 kHz. These results indicate that the Japanese macaque has low-frequency hearing equal to that of humans and better than that indicated by previous audiograms obtained using headphones.  相似文献

Temporal integration for pure tones was examined in two rhesus macaques. The subjects were required to respond to a brief sound (a tone burst) that deviated from a previous series of sounds (noise bursts) on a trial (a deviant-stimulus detection paradigm). Psychometric functions and thresholds were determined from correct detections (hit proportions) alone, and from d' scores. Two models describing the decline in threshold as a function of stimulus duration, one a power function the other an exponential, were tested against the data. When the decline (slope) in threshold per log stimulus duration is used as a rate measure, our results yield a lower estimate of temporal integration rate in rhesus than did a previous study [Clack, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 40, 1140-1146 (1966)]. Both studies, however, gave slope estimates of integration rate that were higher than in most other species. Comparison of the models using data from several species, revealed that the exponential, but not the power model, could account for two sources of variation in threshold measurement. One source is due to the range across threshold as a function of duration (the linear rate component), and is described by the constant of proportionality Ik in the model. The other source of variation arises from the rate of decline within this range (the nonlinear rate component), and is described by the time constant tau. In terms of this model, differences in rate estimates between Clack's study and ours (and between rhesus and other species) are primarily due to the linear component. The nonlinear rate component was about equal for our study and Clack's (tau = approximately 150 ms): a time constant that is just slightly larger (indicating a rate of temporal integration slightly slower) than for most other species examined.  相似文献

In a multiple observation, sample discrimination experiment normal-hearing (NH) and hearing-impaired (HI) listeners heard two multitone complexes each consisting of six simultaneous tones with nominal frequencies spaced evenly on an ERB(N) logarithmic scale between 257 and 6930 Hz. On every trial, the frequency of each tone was sampled from a normal distribution centered near its nominal frequency. In one interval of a 2IFC task, all tones were sampled from distributions lower in mean frequency and in the other interval from distributions higher in mean frequency. Listeners had to identify the latter interval. Decision weights were obtained from multiple regression analysis of the between- interval frequency differences for each tone and listeners' responses. Frequency difference limens (an index of sensorineural resolution) and decision weights for each tone were used to predict the sensitivity of different decision-theoretic models. Results indicate that low-frequency tones were given much greater perceptual weight than high-frequency tones by both groups of listeners. This tendency increased as hearing loss increased and as sensorineural resolution decreased, resulting in significantly less efficient weighting strategies for the HI listeners. Overall, results indicate that HI listeners integrated frequency information less optimally than NH listeners, even after accounting for differences in sensorineural resolution.  相似文献

Abilities to detect and discriminate ten synthetic steady-state English vowels were compared in Old World monkeys (Cercopithecus, Macaca) and humans using standard animal psychophysical procedures and positive-reinforcement operant conditioning techniques. Monkeys' detection thresholds were close to humans' for the front vowels /i-I-E-ae-E), but 10-20 dB higher for the back vowels /V-D-C-U-u/. Subjects were subsequently presented with groups of vowels to discriminate. All monkeys experienced difficulty with spectrally similar pairs such as /V-D/, /E-ae/, and /U-u/, but macaques were superior to Cercopithecus monkeys. Humans discriminated all vowels at 100% correct levels, but their increased response latencies reflected spectral similarity and correlated with higher error rates by monkeys. Varying the intensity level of the vowel stimuli had little effect on either monkey or human discrimination, except at the lowest levels tested. These qualitative similarities in monkey and human vowel discrimination suggest that some monkey species may provide useful models of human vowel processing at the sensory level.  相似文献

Auditory duration DLs at 2.0 kHz were measured in Old World monkeys (Macaca, Cercopithecus) and humans using a go, no-go repeating standard AX procedure and positive reinforcement operant conditioning techniques. For a 200-ms standard, monkey DLs were 45-125 ms, compared to 15-27 ms for humans. Weber fractions (delta T/T) for all species were smallest at standard durations of 200-400 ms and increased as standard duration decreased to 25 ms. Varying intensity from 30-70 dB SPL had only minor effects on DLs, except at the lowest levels tested, where DLs were elevated slightly. Monkeys had difficulty discriminating duration decrements, in contrast to humans. Results are discussed in relation to other comparative psychoacoustic data and primate vocal communication, including human speech.  相似文献

Loud, pulsed "gecker" vocalizations are commonly produced by young rhesus macaques in distressful circumstances. The acoustics, usage, and responses associated with these calls were examined using audio recordings and observational data from captive, socially living rhesus up to 24 months old. One-hundred-eleven gecker bouts were recorded from ten individuals (six males, four females), with most geckers produced during the first 6 months of age. A gecker call consisted of a bout of up to 28 pulses of spectrally structured noise with a single prominent frequency peak. Nine contexts of calling were identified, but little evidence of context-specific acoustic variation was found. While geckering often triggered responses by the vocalizer's mother, the most common outcome was the absence of any reaction. Females geckered longer and at higher rates than did males, while also showing acoustic evidence of greater vocal effort. Mothers nonetheless responded more often and more positively to males. Overall, results show that gecker acoustics vary somewhat with vocalizer sex, age, and likely arousal level, but do not reflect detailed aspects of behavioral context. Circumstances of production suggest that geckers function primarily to draw the attention of mothers, who in turn are selective in responding.  相似文献

For the first time, a quick method to discriminate between undamaged, well‐maintained katanas and worn artificially restored blades is presented. The peculiar hardening process that a Japanese katana undergoes results in creation of a tempered martensitic phase near the blade edge. After the temper, traditional polishing with stones is performed, which gives the sword its final look: the hardened zone exhibits matte finish, and it is separated from the shinier zone by the hamon line, which is the most characteristic feature of a katana. If the sword is worn, the martensitic phase disappears and so does the hamon line, the sword losing most of its commercial value. However, an acid bath can simulate the matte texture of an undamaged martensitic structure, making it really difficult to recognize valuable blades from worn ones. So far, no analytical approach helping in this task was available. The method we present is based on the hypothesis that traditional polishing leaves a very tiny amount of stone dust on the blade, whereas the acid bath rinses it away. The presence on the blade surface of Si (the major component of the stones used for polishing) when the hamon line is clearly visible could thus be a reasonable marker indicating that the blade is maintaining its original martensitic structure and thus is in a good conservation state. For the Si detection, X‐ray fluorescence technique was chosen, which ensures non‐destructivity, high sensitivity, and short measurement time with a portable instrument. Pollimyrus adspersus is a fish that uses simple sounds for communication and has auditory specializations for sound-pressure detection. The sounds are species-specific, and the sounds of individuals are sufficiently stereotyped that they could mediate individual recognition. Behavioral measurements are presented indicating that Pollimyrus probably can make species and individual discriminations on the basis of acoustic cues. Interclick interval (ICI; 10-40 ms) and frequency (100-1400 Hz) discrimination was assessed using modulations of the fish's electric organ discharge rate in the presence of a target stimulus presented in alternation with an ongoing base stimulus. Tone frequency discrimination was best in the 200-600-Hz range, with the best threshold of 1.7% +/- 0.4% standard error at 500 Hz (or 8.5 Hz +/- 1.9 SE). The just noticeable differences (jnd's) were relatively constant from 100 to 500 Hz (mean 8.7 Hz), then increased at a rate of 13.3 Hz per 100 Hz. For click trains, jnd's increased linearly with ICI. The mean jnd's for 10- and 15-ms ICI were both 300 micros (SE= 0.8 ms at 10-ms ICI, SE= 0.11 ms at 15-ms ICI). The jnd at 20-ms ICI was only 1.1 ms +/- 0.25 SE.  相似文献

This study demonstrated the ability of a false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) to discriminate between two targets and investigated the parameters of the whale's emitted signals for changes related to test conditions. Target detection performance comparable to the bottlenose dolphin's (Tursiops truncatus) has previously been reported for echolocating false killer whales. No other echolocation capabilities have been reported. A false killer whale, naive to conditioned echolocation tasks, was initially trained to detect a cylinder in a "go/no-go" procedure over ranges of 3 to 8 m. The transition from a detection task to a discrimination task was readily achieved by introducing a spherical comparison target. Finally, the cylinder was successfully compared to spheres of two different sizes and target strengths. Multivariate analyses were used to evaluate the parameters of emitted signals. Duncan's multiple range tests showed significant decreases (df = 185, p less than 0.05) in both source level and bandwidth in the transition from detection to discrimination. Analysis of variance revealed a significant decrease in the number of clicks over test conditions [F(5.26) = 5.23, p less than 0.0001]. These data suggest that the whale relied on cues relevant to target shape as well as target strength, that changes in source level and bandwidth were task-related, that the decrease in clicks was associated with learning experience, and that Pseudorca's ability to discriminate shapes using echolocation may be comparable to that of Tursiops truncatus.  相似文献

Intensity discrimination thresholds for 500-ms pure-tone bursts were measured as a function of frequency in the goldfish (Carassius auratus) using classical respiratory conditioning. At 55-dB sensation level (SL), thresholds range from 1.44-2.2 dB between 100 and 1600 Hz. There is not important effect of frequency on intensity discrimination. Thresholds at 35-dB SL average 0.7 dB higher than at 55-dB SL. This is a small difference in the context of the threshold variability. In intensity discrimination acuity, the goldfish is quantitatively similar to other vertebrates, including birds and mammals.  相似文献

Simultaneous or near-simultaneous activation of adjacent cochlear implant electrodes can produce pitch percepts intermediate to those produced by each electrode separately, thereby increasing the number of place-pitch steps available to cochlear implant listeners. To estimate how many distinct pitches could be generated with simultaneous dual-electrode stimulation, the present study measured place-pitch discrimination thresholds for single- versus dual-electrode stimuli in users of the Clarion CII device. Discrimination thresholds were expressed as the proportion of current directed to the secondary electrode of the dual-electrode pair. For 16 of 17 electrode pairs tested in six subjects, thresholds ranged from 0.11 to 0.64, suggesting that dual-electrode stimuli can produce 2-9 discriminable pitches between the pitches of single electrodes. Some subjects demonstrated a level effect, with better place-pitch discrimination at higher stimulus levels. Equal loudness was achieved with dual-electrode stimuli at net current levels that were similar to or slightly higher than those for single-electrode stimuli.  相似文献

A method for detecting small molecule NMR resonances under a water peak in biological samples is presented. After high-efficiency solvent suppression using double WATERGATE, either a TOCSY- or ROESY-based coherence transfer sequence is applied to reestablish the resonances close to, or under, water through magnetization transfer using scalar or dipolar coupling, respectively. The use of the TOCSY and ROESY methods ensures an in-phase magnetization transfer, which makes the new approach readily extended for the measurement of transverse relaxation times, internuclear ROEs, and ROE buildup rates. An extension of the new approach for J-resolved spectroscopy is also presented and tested using a sample of human blood plasma.  相似文献

In eukaryotes standard initiation of translation involved 40S ribosome scanning to bridge the distance from the cap to the initiation codon. Recently deviations from that rule had been described, including "internal initiation", "poly-A dependent translation", and "ribosome shunting". In ribosome shunting, ribosomes start scanning at the cap but large portions of the leader are skipped. Thereby the secondary structure of the shunted region is preserved. Scanning in plant caulimoviruses involve a small open reading frame properly spaced in front of a strong stem structure, and, in order to function, the small open reading frome has to be translated and the peptide released. This arrangement can be mimicked by artificial small open reading frames and stem structures. Shunting with viral and synthetic leaders occurs not only in plant-, but also in mammalian and yeast systems. Thus it responds to an intrinsic property of the eukaryotic translational machinery and probably acts in many cases where coding regions are preceded by complex leaders.  相似文献

The ability of goldfish to detect a change in the frequency of 400-Hz pure-tone bursts was studied using classical respiratory conditioning. The frequency discrimination threshold was measured at 15-, 35-, and 55-dB sensation level (SL), under conditions of (1) constant intensity, (2) roving intensity (plus and minus 6-dB burst-to-burst variation in intensity), (3) upward frequency change, and (4) downward frequency change. There was no overall effect of SL on frequency discrimination, but roving the intensity elevated thresholds by about 6 Hz (33%) and increased variability. Upward shifts in frequency elevated thresholds slightly (by 2 Hz or 10%) relative to downward shifts. These relatively small and statistically insignificant effects suggest that earlier measures of frequency discrimination in the goldfish are not due to the detection of simple changes in spike rate within individual peripheral channels.  相似文献

First-order quasi-phase-matched frequency doubling at 780 nm in a 1-mm-thick periodically poled KTiOPO(4) crystal with an inverted-domain period of 2.95 microm has been demonstrated for the first time to the authors' knowledge. A normalized conversion efficiency of 1.1%W(-1) cm(-1) has been obtained in cw mode. Experiments show that group-velocity walk-off prevents efficient frequency doubling of femtosecond pulses in KTiOPO(4) in the UV spectral range. However, because of the large optical nonlinearity, periodically poled structures can be efficiently used for frequency doubling of cw and pulsed lasers with pulse lengths as short as ~1 ps .  相似文献
