Transition between superhydrophobic states on rough surfaces   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
Surface roughness is known to amplify hydrophobicity. It is observed that, in general, two drop shapes are possible on a given rough surface. These two cases correspond to the Wenzel (liquid wets the grooves of the rough surface) and Cassie (the drop sits on top of the peaks of the rough surface) formulas. Depending on the geometric parameters of the substrate, one of these two cases has lower energy. It is not guaranteed, though, that a drop will always exist in the lower energy state; rather, the state in which a drop will settle depends typically on how the drop is formed. In this paper, we investigate the transition of a drop from one state to another. In particular, we are interested in the transition of a "Cassie drop" to a "Wenzel drop", since it has implications on the design of superhydrophobic rough surfaces. We propose a methodology, based on energy balance, to determine whether a transition from the Cassie to Wenzel case is possible.

The relationship between the contact angles, surface tension, and surface roughness is reviewed. Numerical formulas related to the superhydrophobic rough surfaces of polymers are predicted with two approaches, the Wenzel and Cassie–Baxter models. With these models as a guide, an artificial superhydrophobic surface is created. Rough nylon surfaces mimicking the lotus leaf are created by the coating of a polyester surface with nylon‐6,6 short fibers via the flocking process. Poly(acrylic acid) chains aregrafted onto nylon‐6,6 surfaces, and this is followed by the grafting of 1H,1H‐perfluorooctylamine onto the poly(acrylic acid) chains. Water contact angles as high as 178° are achieved. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 45: 253–261, 2007.  相似文献

We show experimentally and analytically that for single-valued, isotropic, homogeneous, randomly rough surfaces consisting of bumps randomly protruding over a continuous background, superhydrophobicity is related to the power spectral density of the surface height, which can be derived from microscopy measurements. More precisely, superhydrophobicity correlates with the third moment of the power spectral density, which is directly related to the notion of Wenzel roughness (i.e., the ratio between the real area of the surface and its projected area). In addition, we explain why randomly rough surfaces with identical root-mean-square roughness values may behave differently with respect to water repellence and why roughness components with wavelength larger than 10 μm are not likely to be of importance or, stated otherwise, why superhydrophobicity often requires a contribution from submicrometer-scale components such as nanoparticles. The analysis developed here also shows that the simple thermodynamic arguments relating superhydrophobicity to an increase in the sample area are valid for this type of surface, and we hope that it will help researchers to fabricate efficient superhydrophobic surfaces based on the rational design of their power spectral density.  相似文献

Artificial superhydrophobic surfaces are typically fabricated by tuning the surface roughness of intrinsically hydrophobic surfaces. We report here the design and fabrication of micro-textures for inducing a superhydrophobic behavior on hydrogen-terminated Si surfaces with an intrinsic water contact angle of approximately 74 degrees . The micro-textures consist of overhang structures with well-defined geometries fabricated by microfabrication technologies, which provide positions to support the liquid and prevent the liquid from entering into the indents between the micro-textures. As a result, water is in contact with a composite surface of solid and air, which induces the observed macroscopic superhydrophobic behavior.  相似文献

Wall adsorption is a common problem in microfluidic devices, particularly when proteins are used. Here we show how superhydrophobic surfaces can be used to reduce protein adsorption and to promote desorption. Hydrophobic surfaces, both smooth and having high surface roughness of varying length scales (to generate superhydrophobicity), were incubated in protein solution. The samples were then exposed to flow shear in a device designed to simulate a microfluidic environment. Results show that a similar amount of protein adsorbed onto smooth and nanometer-scale rough surfaces, although a greater amount was found to adsorb onto superhydrophobic surfaces with micrometer scale roughness. Exposure to flow shear removed a considerably larger proportion of adsorbed protein from the superhydrophobic surfaces than from the smooth ones, with almost all of the protein being removed from some nanoscale surfaces. This type of surface may therefore be useful in environments, such as microfluidics, where protein sticking is a problem and fluid flow is present. Possible mechanisms that explain the behaviour are discussed, including decreased contact between protein and surface and greater shear stress due to interfacial slip between the superhydrophobic surface and the liquid.  相似文献

The amazing water repellency of many biological surfaces, exemplified by lotus leaves, has recently received a great deal of interest. These surfaces, called superhydrophobic surfaces, exhibit water contact angles larger than 150 degrees and a low contact angle hysteresis because of both their low surface energy and heterogeneously rough structures. In this paper, we suggest a biomimetic method, "biosilicification", for generating heterogeneously rough structures and fabricating superhydrophobic surfaces. The superhydrophobic surface was prepared by a combination of the formation of heterogeneously rough, nanosphere-like silica structures through biosilicification and the formation of self-assembled monolayers of fluorosilane on the surface. The resulting surface exhibited the water contact angle of 160.1 degrees and the very low water contact angle hysteresis of only 2.3 degrees, which are definite characteristics of superhydrophobic surfaces. The superhydrophobic property of our system probably resulted from the air trapped in the rough surface. The wetting behavior on the surface was in the heterogeneous regime, which was totally supported by Cassie-Baxter equation.  相似文献

Most of the artificial superhydrophobic surfaces that have been fabricated to date are not biodegradable, renewable, or mechanically flexible and are often expensive, which limits their potential applications. In contrast, cellulose, a biodegradable, renewable, flexible, inexpensive, biopolymer which is abundantly present in nature, satisfies all the above requirements, but it is not superhydrophobic. Superhydrophobicity on cellulose paper was obtained by domain-selective etching of amorphous portions of the cellulose in an oxygen plasma and subsequently coating the etched surface with a thin fluorocarbon film deposited via plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition using pentafluoroethane as a precursor. Variation of plasma treatment yielded two types of superhydrophobicity : "roll-off" (contact angle (CA), 166.7 degrees +/- 0.9 degrees ; CA hysteresis, 3.4 degrees +/- 0.1 degrees ) and "sticky" (CA, 144.8 degrees +/- 5.7 degrees ; CA hysteresis, 79.1 degrees +/- 15.8 degrees ) near superhydrophobicity. The nanometer scale roughness obtained by delineating the internal roughness of each fiber and the micrometer scale roughness which is inherent to a cellulose paper surface are robust when compared to roughened structures created by traditional polymer grafting, nanoparticle deposition, or other artificial means.  相似文献

Considerable effort has been expended on theoretical studies of superhydrophobic surfaces with two-tier (micro and nano) roughness, but experimental studies are few due to the difficulties in fabricating such surfaces in a controllable way. The objective of this work is to experimentally study the wetting and hydrophobicity of water droplets on two-tier rough surfaces for comparison with theoretical analyses. To compare wetting on micropatterned silicon surfaces with wetting on nanoscale roughness surfaces, two model systems are fabricated: carbon nanotube arrays on silicon wafers and carbon nanotube arrays on carbon nanotube films. All surfaces are coated with 20 nm thick fluorocarbon films to obtain low surface energies. The results show that the microstructural characteristics must be optimized to achieve stable superhydrophobicity on microscale rough surfaces. However, the presence of nanoscale roughness allows a much broader range of surface design criteria, decreases the contact angle hysteresis to less than 1 degrees , and establishes stable and robust superhydrophobicity, although nanoscale roughness could not increase the apparent contact angle significantly if the microscale roughness dominates.  相似文献

Fabrication and characterization of superhydrophobic silica nanotrees   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Superhydrophobic silica nanotrees were obtained by sol–gel method with hybrid silica sol and jelly-like resorcinol formaldehyde resin. Rough surfaces were obtained by removing the organic polymer at high temperature. After the films with rough surface were modified by trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS), the wettability of the film changed from superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic. The surface roughness of the silica nanotrees film is about 20 nm, and it is transparent and superhydrophobic with a water contact angle higher than 150°.  相似文献

Plasma-based processes for surface wettability modification   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this article, we describe a method to create rough features on silicon surfaces by reactive etching of a photoresist layer. The roughness and, consequently, the wettability of the surfaces can be modified by modifying the duration of plasma etching. Hydrophobic materials deposited on the rough silicon surface can be modified until a superhydrophobic behavior is obtained, whereas hydrophilic materials become more hydrophilic. The elaboration technique described herein offers an inexpensive and rapid method for the creation of tunable roughness on silicon surfaces with large areas.  相似文献

The preparation of superhydrophobic SiO(2) layers through a combination of a nanoscale surface roughness and a fluorination treatment is reported. Electrospraying SiO(2) precursor solutions that had been prepared by a sol-gel chemical route produced very rough SiO(2) layers. Subsequent fluorination treatment with a solution containing trichloro(1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyl)silane resulted in highly rough, fluorinated SiO(2) layers. The fluorinated rough SiO(2) layers exhibited excellent repellency toward various liquid droplets. In particular, water repellency of 168° was observed. On the bases of Cassie-Baxter and Young-Dupre equations, the surface fraction and the work of adhesion of the rough, fluorinated SiO(2) layers were respectively estimated. In light of the durability in water, ultraviolet resistance, and thermal stability, the superhydrophobic SiO(2) layers prepared in this work hold promise in a range of practical applications.  相似文献

Advancements in the fabrication of microfluidic and nanofluidic devices and the study of liquids in confined geometries rely on understanding the boundary conditions for the flow of liquids at solid surfaces. Over the past ten years, a large number of research groups have turned to investigating flow boundary conditions, and the occurrence of interfacial slip has become increasingly well-accepted and understood. While the dependence of slip on surface wettability is fairly well understood, the effect of other surface modifications that affect surface roughness, structure and compliance, on interfacial slip is still under intense investigation. In this paper we review investigations published in the past ten years on boundary conditions for flow on complex surfaces, by which we mean rough and structured surfaces, surfaces decorated with chemical patterns, grafted with polymer layers, with adsorbed nanobubbles, and superhydrophobic surfaces. The review is divided in two interconnected parts, the first dedicated to physical experiments and the second to computational experiments on interfacial slip of simple (Newtonian) liquids on these complex surfaces. Our work is intended as an entry-level review for researchers moving into the field of interfacial slip, and as an indication of outstanding problems that need to be addressed for the field to reach full maturity.  相似文献

The wetting behavior of fluorocarbon materials has been studied with the aim of assessing the influence of the surface chemical composition and surface roughness on the water advancing and receding contact angles. Diamond like carbon and two fluorocarbon materials with different fluorine content have been prepared by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition and characterized by X-ray photoemission, Raman and FT-IR spectroscopies. Very rough surfaces have been obtained by deposition of thin films of these materials on polymer substrates previously subjected to plasma etching to increase their roughness. A direct correlation has been found between roughness and water contact angles while a superhydrophobic behavior (i.e., water contact angles higher than 150° and relatively low adhesion energy) was found for the films with the highest fluorine content deposited on very rough substrates. A critical evaluation of the methods currently used to assess the roughness of these surfaces by atomic force microscopy (AFM) has evidenced that calculated RMS roughness values and actual surface areas are quite dependent on both the scale of observation and image resolution. A critical discussion is carried out about the application of the Wenzel model to account for the wetting behavior of this type of surfaces.  相似文献

Despite the practical need, no models exist to predict contact angles or wetting mode of surfactant solutions on rough hydrophobic or superhydrophobic surfaces. Using Gibbs' adsorption equation and a literature isotherm, a new model is constructed based on the Wenzel and Cassie equations. Experimental data for aqueous solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) contact angles on smooth Teflon surfaces are fit to estimate values for the adsorption coefficients in the model. Using these coefficients, model predictions for contact angles as a function of topological f (Cassie) and r (Wenzel) factors and SDS concentration are made for different intrinsic contact angles. The model is also used to design/tune surface responses. It is found that: (1) predictions compare favorably to data for SDS solutions on five superhydrophobic surfaces. Further, the model predictions can determine which wetting mode (Wenzel or Cassie) occurred in each experiment. The unpenetrated or partially penetrated Cassie mode was the most common, suggesting that surfactants inhibit the penetration of liquids into rough hydrophobic surfaces. (2) The Wenzel roughness factor, r, amplifies the effect of surfactant adsorption, leading to larger changes in contact angles and promoting total wetting. (3) The Cassie solid area fraction, f, attenuates the lowering of contact angles on rough surfaces. (4) The amplification/attenuation is understood to be due to increased/decreased solid-liquid contact-area.  相似文献

The creation of low hysteresis superhydrophobic paper is reported using a combination of oxygen plasma etching and plasma deposition of an 80 nm non-fluorinated, hydrophilic diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating. The DLC has an equilibrium (flat surface) contact angle (θ e ) of 68.2° ± 1.5°, which is well below the 90° contact angle that is typically believed to be a prerequisite for superhydrophobicity. Coating of paper substrates with the DLC film yields an advancing contact angle of 124.3° ± 4.1°, but the surface remains highly adhesive, with a receding contact angle <10°. After 60 min of plasma etching and DLC coating, a low hysteresis, superhydrophobic surface is formed with an advancing contact angle of 162.0° ± 6.3° and hysteresis of 8.7° ± 1.9°. To understand the increase in contact angle and decrease in hysteresis, atomic force microscopy and optical profilometry studies were performed. The data demonstrates that while little additional nanoscale roughness is imparted beyond the first 5 min of etching, the roughness at the microscale continually increases. The hierarchical structure provides the appropriate roughness to create low hysteresis superhydrophobic paper from a hydrophilic coating.  相似文献

Nanoscaled surface roughness with a hydrophobically modified surface has been widely used for preparation of superhydrophobic materials. However, the complicated procedure, high cost and harmful compounds used in most superhydrophobic surface modifications limited their applications. This research aims at fabricating superhydrophobic cellulosic or semi-superhydrophobic papers with low cost and nontoxic materials. Commercial PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate) particles, hydrophobic stearic acid and polymer latex particles were used for surface roughness control, surface hydrophobic modification agent, and polymer binder, respectively. A simple coating or dipping method was used to produce high contact angle and high water resistance papers. It was found that the surface pretreatment of PCC with fatty acid salt prior mixing with polymer binder plays important role for improving the water contact angle (WCA). The combination of surface coating with dipping treatment will further increase the water contact angle and water resistance of the paper. A WCA near 150° over modified paper surface has been achieved. At the same degree of water resistance, the total cost of the paper can be significantly reduced by our method.  相似文献
