Summary Four substances have been isolated from the seeds ofCoronilla hyrcana: hyrcanoside, deglucohyrcanoside, hyrcanogenin, and substance E.It has been established that hyrcanoside (I) has the structure 3-(O--D-xylopyranosyl- <4 1 > -O--D-glycopyranosyl)-14-hydroxy-19-oxocard-4, 20 (22)-dienolide; deglucohyrcanoside (VII) is 3-(O--D-xylopyranosyl)-14-hydroxy-19-oxocard-4, 20 (22)-dienolide; and hyrcanogenin (V) is 3, 14-dihydroxy-19-oxocard-4, 20 (22)-dienolide. The results are given of an investigation of the structure of a glucuronoxylan of the stems ofSymphytum asperum Ler. The xylan was isolated by alkaline extraction and was purified by reprecipitation via the copper complex. The polysaccharide was homogeneous according to the results of gel filtration and electrophoresis. It was shown by hydrolysis, periodate oxidation, methylation, oxidation with chromium trioxide and IR and13C NMR spectroscopy that the macromolecules were based on a -(14)-polyxyloside chain having side chains at the second carbon atoms in the form of 4-O-Me-D-glucuronic acid. The characteristics of the water-soluble complex of the leaves ofSilphium perfoliatum are given. The presence in them of acidic components of the type of pectic substances containing considerable amounts of compounds of protein nature has been shown. A comparative investigation of the acid hydrolysis of the guza-paya [stems and bolls] and seed husks of the cotton plant has shown that the hydrolysates differ in their quantitative levels of monosaccharides, but in the pentose hydrolysates xylose predominates in both cases. The extracts after the preliminary enrichment of the raw material contain a large amount of xylose.
