By the Von Neumann inequality every contraction on a Hilbert space is polynomially bounded. A simple example shows that this result does not extend to Banach space contractions. In this paper, we give general conditions under which an arbitrary Banach space contraction is polynomially bounded. These conditions concern the thinness of the spectrum and the behaviour of the resolvent or the sequence of negative powers. To do this we use techniques from harmonic analysis, in particular, results concerning thin sets such as Helson sets, Kronecker sets and sets that satisfy spectral synthesis. 相似文献

A one-parameter family of bivariate means is introduced. They are defined in terms of the inverse functions of Jacobian elliptic functions cn and nc. It is shown that the new means are symmetric and homogeneous of degree one in their variables. Members of this family of means interpolate an inequality which connects two Schwab–Borchardt means. In this paper, we establish some range inclusion theorems for non-archimedean Banach spaces over general valued fields. These theorems provide close relationship among range inclusion, majorization and factorization for bounded linear operators. It is found that these results depend strongly on a continuous extension property, which is always true in the classical archimedean case, but may fail to hold for the nonarchimedean setting. Several counterexamples are given to show that our results are sharp in some sense. 相似文献
