In this paper we introduce a polynomial frame on the unit sphere of , for which every distribution has a wavelet-type decomposition. More importantly, we prove that many function spaces on the sphere , such as , and Besov spaces, can be characterized in terms of the coefficients in the wavelet decompositions, as in the usual Euclidean case . We also study a related nonlinear -term approximation problem on . In particular, we prove both a Jackson-type inequality and a Bernstein-type inequality associated to wavelet decompositions, which extend the corresponding results obtained by R. A. DeVore, B. Jawerth and V. Popov (``Compression of wavelet decompositions', Amer. J. Math. 114 (1992), no. 4, 737-785).

We introduce the class of deformed preprojective algebras of generalized Dynkin graphs (), (), , , and () and prove that it coincides with the class of all basic connected finite-dimensional self-injective algebras for which the inverse Nakayama shift of every non-projective simple module is isomorphic to its third syzygy .

Let the space be endowed with a Minkowski structure (that is, is the gauge function of a compact convex set having the origin as an interior point, and with boundary of class ), and let be the (asymmetric) distance associated to . Given an open domain of class , let be the Minkowski distance of a point from the boundary of . We prove that a suitable extension of to (which plays the rôle of a signed Minkowski distance to ) is of class in a tubular neighborhood of , and that is of class outside the cut locus of (that is, the closure of the set of points of nondifferentiability of in ). In addition, we prove that the cut locus of has Lebesgue measure zero, and that can be decomposed, up to this set of vanishing measure, into geodesics starting from and going into along the normal direction (with respect to the Minkowski distance). We compute explicitly the Jacobian determinant of the change of variables that associates to every point outside the cut locus the pair , where denotes the (unique) projection of on , and we apply these techniques to the analysis of PDEs of Monge-Kantorovich type arising from problems in optimal transportation theory and shape optimization.

If is a metric space, then and denote the semigroups of continuous and Lipschitz mappings, respectively, from to itself. The relative rank of modulo is the least cardinality of any set where generates . For a large class of separable metric spaces we prove that the relative rank of modulo is uncountable. When is the Baire space , this rank is . A large part of the paper emerged from discussions about the necessity of the assumptions imposed on the class of spaces from the aforementioned results.

Let be a connected, simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field. There is a partition of the wonderful compactification of into finite many -stable pieces, which was introduced by Lusztig. In this paper, we will investigate the closure of any -stable piece in . We will show that the closure is a disjoint union of some -stable pieces, which was first conjectured by Lusztig. We will also prove the existence of cellular decomposition if the closure contains finitely many -orbits.

There are several notions of largeness that make sense in any semigroup, and others such as the various kinds of density that make sense in sufficiently well-behaved semigroups including and . It was recently shown that sets in which are multiplicatively large must contain arbitrarily large geoarithmetic progressions, that is, sets of the form , as well as sets of the form . Consequently, given a finite partition of , one cell must contain such configurations. In the partition case we show that we can get substantially stronger conclusions. We establish some combined additive and multiplicative Ramsey theoretic consequences of known algebraic results in the semigroups and , derive some new algebraic results, and derive consequences of them involving geoarithmetic progressions. For example, we show that given any finite partition of there must be, for each , sets of the form together with , the arithmetic progression , and the geometric progression in one cell of the partition. More generally, we show that, if is a commutative semigroup and a partition regular family of finite subsets of , then for any finite partition of and any , there exist and such that is contained in a cell of the partition. Also, we show that for certain partition regular families and of subsets of , given any finite partition of some cell contains structures of the form for some .

Say that a separable, unital -algebra is strongly self-absorbing if there exists an isomorphism such that and are approximately unitarily equivalent -homomorphisms. We study this class of algebras, which includes the Cuntz algebras , , the UHF algebras of infinite type, the Jiang-Su algebra and tensor products of with UHF algebras of infinite type. Given a strongly self-absorbing -algebra we characterise when a separable -algebra absorbs tensorially (i.e., is -stable), and prove closure properties for the class of separable -stable -algebras. Finally, we compute the possible -groups and prove a number of classification results which suggest that the examples listed above are the only strongly self-absorbing -algebras.

Let be a central extension of the form where and are elementary abelian -groups. Associated to there is a quadratic map , given by the -power map, which uniquely determines the extension. This quadratic map also determines the extension class of the extension in and an ideal in which is generated by the components of . We say that is Bockstein closed if is an ideal closed under the Bockstein operator.

We find a direct condition on the quadratic map that characterizes when the extension is Bockstein closed. Using this characterization, we show for example that quadratic maps induced from the fundamental quadratic map given by yield Bockstein closed extensions.

On the other hand, it is well known that an extension is Bockstein closed if and only if it lifts to an extension for some -lattice . In this situation, one may write for a ``binding matrix' with entries in . We find a direct way to calculate the module structure of in terms of . Using this, we study extensions where the lattice is diagonalizable/triangulable and find interesting equivalent conditions to these properties.

Let be the solution operator for in , Tr on , where is a bounded domain in . B. E. J. Dahlberg proved that for a bounded Lipschitz domain maps boundedly into weak- and that there exists such that is bounded for . In this paper, we generalize this result by addressing two aspects. First we are also able to treat the solution operator corresponding to Neumann boundary conditions and, second, we prove mapping properties for these operators acting on Sobolev (rather than Lebesgue) spaces.

In this paper we study conditions under which a free minimal -action on the Cantor set is a topological extension of the action of rotations, either on the product of -tori or on a single -torus . We extend the notion of linearly recurrent systems defined for -actions on the Cantor set to -actions, and we derive in this more general setting a necessary and sufficient condition, which involves a natural combinatorial data associated with the action, allowing the existence of a rotation topological factor of one of these two types.

Suppose that we have observations from a -dimensional population. We are interested in testing that the variates of the population are independent under the situation where goes to infinity as . A test statistic is chosen to be , where is the sample correlation coefficient between the -th coordinate and the -th coordinate of the population. Under an independent hypothesis, we prove that the asymptotic distribution of is an extreme distribution of type , by using the Chen-Stein Poisson approximation method and the moderate deviations for sample correlation coefficients. As a statistically more relevant result, a limit distribution for , where is Spearman's rank correlation coefficient between the -th coordinate and the -th coordinate of the population, is derived.

In Gindikin and Matsuki 2003, we defined a - invariant subset of for each -orbit on every flag manifold and conjectured that the connected component of the identity would be equal to the Akhiezer-Gindikin domain if is of nonholomorphic type. This conjecture was proved for closed in Wolf and Zierau 2000 and 2003, Fels and Huckleberry 2005, and Matsuki 2006 and for open in Matsuki 2006. It was proved for the other orbits in Matsuki 2006, when is of non-Hermitian type. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for an arbitrary non-closed -orbit when is of Hermitian type. Thus the conjecture is completely solved affirmatively.

We compute the small quantum cohomology of Hilb and determine recursively most of the big quantum cohomology. We prove a relationship between the invariants so obtained and the enumerative geometry of hyperelliptic curves in . This extends the results obtained by Graber (2001) for Hilb and hyperelliptic curves in .

The Iwasawa algebra is a power series ring in one variable over the -adic integers. It has long been studied by number theorists in the context of -extensions of number fields. It also arises, however, as a ring of operations in -adic topological -theory. In this paper we study -local stable homotopy theory using the structure theory of modules over the Iwasawa algebra. In particular, for odd we classify -local spectra up to pseudo-equivalence (the analogue of pseudo-isomorphism for -modules) and give an Iwasawa-theoretic classification of the thick subcategories of the weakly dualizable spectra.

We deal with all the maps from the exponential family such that the orbit of zero escapes to infinity sufficiently fast. In particular all the parameters are included. We introduce as our main technical devices the projection of the map to the infinite cylinder and an appropriate conformal measure . We prove that , essentially the set of points in returning infinitely often to a compact region of disjoint from the orbit of , has the Hausdorff dimension , that the -dimensional Hausdorff measure of is positive and finite, and that the -dimensional packing measure is locally infinite at each point of . We also prove the existence and uniqueness of a Borel probability -invariant ergodic measure equivalent to the conformal measure . As a byproduct of the main course of our considerations, we reprove the result obtained independently by Lyubich and Rees that the -limit set (under ) of Lebesgue almost every point in , coincides with the orbit of zero under the map . Finally we show that the the function , , is continuous.

Let be a compact spacetime which admits a regular globally hyperbolic covering, and a nontrivial free timelike homotopy class of closed timelike curves in We prove that contains a longest curve (which must be a closed timelike geodesic) if and only if the timelike injectivity radius of is finite; i.e., has a bounded length. As a consequence among others, we deduce that for a compact static spacetime there exists a closed timelike geodesic within every nontrivial free timelike homotopy class having a finite timelike injectivity radius.

In this paper we study the space of effective -cycles in with the homology class equal to an integral multiple of the homology class of Schubert variety of type . When is a proper linear subspace of a linear space in , we know that is already complicated. We will show that for a smooth Schubert variety in a Hermitian symmetric space, any irreducible subvariety with the homology class , , is again a Schubert variety of type , unless is a non-maximal linear space. In particular, any local deformation of such a smooth Schubert variety in Hermitian symmetric space is obtained by the action of the Lie group .

In this paper we define a distinguished boundary for the complex crowns of non-compact Riemannian symmetric spaces . The basic result is that affine symmetric spaces of can appear as a component of this boundary if and only if they are non-compactly causal symmetric spaces.
