In this paper the reflection and diffraction properties of nonlinear thin dielectric coatings are investigated. A quite simple geometry consisting of two semi-infinite homogenous linear spaces separated by a non-linear coating is considered. An incident plane wave propagating along the z direction towards the nonlinear thin coating is taken. The nonlinear thin coating is divided into elementary sectors, within each one of which one propagating and one reflected wave exists. The boundary conditions are then applied in order to develop an efficient numerical alogirthm to study the properties of the nonlinear thin coating.  相似文献

It is shown that high-frequency electromagnetic waves can parametrically excite the convection and ion drift waves in a slightly inhomogeneous magnetized plasma. The growth rates of the nonlinear decay instabilities are obtained analytically.  相似文献

Scattering of electromagnetic waves by static and traversable wormholes is discussed. Based on the fact that these spacetimes have no horizon, and regarding their non-trivial topology, we have developed the perturbation theory of scattering and the Born approximation for obtaining the differential scattering cross section. Some of the zeros of the scattering pattern at long wavelengths are determined which can be used for estimating the radius of the throat. The known result that in scattering by static spacetimes the linear polarization remains unchanged is verified here.  相似文献

The scattering of a plane electromagnetic wave at a bi-isotropic sphere is studied, and exact analytical representations are obtained for the fields inside and outside the sphere. The formulas for characteristics of the electromagnetic wave scattering from a thin (compared to the wavelength) plasma dipole are obtained. The dynamics of the scattering characteristics is considered during microwave streamer evolution in air. An approach is proposed, which makes it possible to interpret the behavior of a detector signal and to estimate the streamer parameters after the termination of its elongation.  相似文献

We develop an asymptotic theory of nonresonant backscattering of electromagnetic waves in the X-band by the ocean surface. Small-height (5÷20 cm) breaking surface waves with sharpened edges are assumed to be the main cause of nonresonant scattering. Using the methods of physical optics and geometrical theory of diffraction, we calculate the contribution of breaking sharpened waves to the scattering cross section for two orthogonal polarizations of electromagnetic scattering. It is shown that the main contribution to the backscattering is from the mirror reflection from the leading edge of such a wave, and the sharpness of the wave edge leads to the fact that the backscattering cross section of horizontally polarized radiation can exceed that of the vertically polarized radiation. This Letter treats the scattering of electromagnetic waves by an electrically charged spherical particle in near-field approximation. Particular attention is paid to the external intensity distribution at the outer edges of the particle. The diffraction of electromagnetic waves, incident obliquely on an ionospheric layer with density inhomogeneities of the traveling-wave type, is investigated by S. M. Rytov's method of smooth perturbations. The spatial dependencies of the properties of the ionosphere and of the wavelike inhomogeneities are taken into consideration. The diffraction patterns are analyzed for several variants of height profiles of the wave perturbations. In the current paper a general method is presented for the rigorous solution for the scattering of elastic waves by a cluster of elastic circular cylinders of infinite length. The interface separating the cylinder from the surrounding media is considered to be homogeneous imperfect. Specifically, the tractions are continuous but the displacements are discontinuous and proportional in terms of interface stiffness parameters to their respective traction components. Using the exact theory of multipole expansion, analytic solutions for the scattered and internal fields excited by an incident plane P-wave, an incident cylindrical P-wave and an incident plane SV-wave are derived.

Numerical results for directivity patterns and scattering cross-sections are presented for a finite hexagonal array of elastic circular inclusions with imperfect interface. The results show that the sequence of maxima and minima in the curves of scattered cross-sections becomes more undistinguishable as the interface becomes more imperfect. Also, the results reveal that large low-frequency peaks of the scattered cross-sections, which correspond to resonance scattering, can be observed for both the low-velocity and high-velocity elastic cylinders with extremely imperfect interface while the small high-frequency peaks of the scattered cross-sections can appear for low-velocity elastic cylinders with relatively perfect interface. Furthermore, the results clearly show that the interaction effects between cylinders cannot be ignored for an incident plane SV-wave as compared to an incident plane P-wave. More importantly is the fact that the reciprocity relations, which hold for elastic wave scattering by a single cylinder, no longer apply for elastic wave scattering by multiple cylinders.  相似文献

Current problems of the theory of multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves by discrete random media are reviewed, with an emphasis on densely packed media. All equations presented are based on the rigorous theory of electromagnetic scattering by an arbitrary system of non-spherical particles. The main relations are derived in the circular-polarization basis. By applying methods of statistical electromagnetics to a discrete random medium in the form of a plane-parallel layer, we transform these relations into equations describing the average (coherent) field and equations for the sums of ladder and cyclical diagrams in the framework of the quasi-crystalline approximation. The equation for the average field yields analytical expressions for the generalized Lorentz-Lorenz law and the generalized Ewald-Oseen extinction theorem, which are traditionally used for the calculation of the effective refractive index. By assuming that the particles are in the far-field zones of each other, we transform all equations asymptotically into the well-known equations for sparse media. Specifically, the equation for the sum of the ladder diagrams is reduced to the classical vector radiative transfer equation. We present a simple approximate solution of the equation describing the weak localization (WL) effect (i.e., the sum of cyclical diagrams) and validate it by using experimental and numerically exact theoretical data. Examples of the characteristics of WL as functions of the physical properties of a particulate medium are given. The applicability of the interference concept of WL to densely packed media is discussed using results of numerically exact computer solutions of the macroscopic Maxwell equations for large ensembles of spherical particles. These results show that theoretical predictions for spare media composed of non-absorbing or weakly absorbing particles are reasonably accurate if the particle packing density is less than ∼30%. However, a further increase of the packing density and/or absorption may cause optical effects not predicted by the low-density theory and caused by near-field effects. The origin of the near-filed effects is discussed in detail.  相似文献
