We expand the degenerate PO pump-probe technique to nondegenerate field and use it to investigate optical nonlinear dynamics in ZnS single crystal. Excited by 532-nm laser pulses with 21-ps duration, the temporal response of nondegenerate nonlinear absorption and nondegenerate nonlinear refraction are probed by laser pulses from optical parameter generation (OPG) at 600 and 680 nm with pulse width of 10 ps. Based on the theory of free-carrier optical nonlinearity, we study the pure free-carrier refraction in ZnS. By numerically fitting based on the nondegenerate pump-probe theory, the nondegenerate two-photon absorption coefficient, the free-carrier lifetime, the free-carrier absorptive cross section and refractive coefficient at both probe wavelengths are determined respectively. The dispersion of the free-carrier refractive coefficients is discussed.  相似文献

A femtosecond differential optical Kerr gate (DOKG) and Z-scan techniques, have been applied to investigate the third-order optical nonlinearity of composite film of the coordination complex [PdLPPh3] (L=N-(2-pyridyl)-N′-(salicylidene)hydrazine, PPh3=triphenylphosphine). Film exhibits superior nonlinear optical properties in the near-infrared spectral region. The nonlinear response time and third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of complex were found to be≤90 fs and 3.9×10?10 esu, respectively. The Z-scan result shows that saturable absorption property of the film and its nonlinear absorption coefficient of the sample was found to be ?23 cm/GW.  相似文献

We demonstrate a new optical bistability devise by using two Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG), in which an erbium-doped fiber (EDF) is inserted to form a nonlinear Fabry–Perot cavity (EDF FBG/F–P). The operation principle of this device is described by the resonant nonlinearity theory combining with the transfer matrix method. The optical bistability behaviors under different parameters are investigated. It shows that EDF FBG/F–P device has an evident merit in reducing the threshold switching power to 7 mW, resulting in a reduction about 6 orders, compared with that of single FBG device. Moreover, the ultra-fast response time about 35 ps is also confirmed.  相似文献

The nonlinear optical properties of a series of azobenzene liquid-crystalline materials, which have different side-chain lengths in their molecular structure from one to another, were investigated using Z-scan method under picosecond pulse laser at 532 nm, 1064 nm and CW 488 nm excitation. The mechanism accounting for the process of nonlinear refraction was discussed under different laser excitations. The polymer films possess very large nonlinear refraction at all the three different laser excitations. Especially, the nonlinear refractive index becomes larger as the length of side-chain, where azobenzene group is contained, increases under pulse excitation at 1064 nm.  相似文献

The quest for materials exhibiting high nonlinear refraction and absorption are required for photonic device application. In this paper we report a simplified Z-scan technique, to study the optical nonlinearity of the dye bromocresol purple in methanol and ethanol for different concentration and dye doped polymer film at the wavelength 532 nm of Nd:YAG laser. The experimental results show that the investigated organic dye molecule exhibits saturation absorption and negative nonlinearity. The nonlinear absorption co-efficient and the nonlinear refractive index were measured for the dye doped film, and for dye in methanol and ethanol at the concentration of 0.03 mM and 0.05 mM. The measured third order susceptibility was found to be of the order of 10−6 e.s.u. in both solid and liquid medium. The result shows that the dye has potential applications in nonlinear optics.  相似文献

Amorphous Si/SiO2(a-Si/SiO2) superlattices have been fabricated by the magnetron sputtering technique. The superlattice with an Si layer thickness of 1.8 nm has been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The result indicates that most of the regions in the Si layer consist of amorphous phase, while regular structure appears in some local regions. This is in agreement with the Raman scattering spectroscopy. The optical absorption spectrum and photoluminescence (PL) spectrum have been measured. Moreover, the third-order optical nonlinearity χ(3)of this superlattice has been measured. To our knowledge, this is the first investigation of the nonlinear absorption and refractive index of an a-Si/SiO2superlattice using the Z -scan technique. The real and imaginary parts of χ(3)have been found to be 1.316  ×  10  7eus and   5.596  ×  10  7eus, respectively, which are about two orders of magnitude greater than those of porous silicon. The results may be attractive for potential application in electro-optics devices.  相似文献

The third-order nonlinear optical properties of polyurethane-urea/multiwalled carbon nanotube composites (PU/MWNT) films with different MWNT concentrations are investigated by the use of the Z-scan technique at a wavelength of 532 nm with a pulse duration of 8 ns. The results reveal that the nonlinear refraction and absorption coefficients are linearly dependent on the MWNT concentration. The negative nonlinear refraction effect is validated from the closed-aperture Z-scan measurements. We find that PU/MWNT films are promising nonlinear optical materials, and the nonlinear coefficients can be controlled.  相似文献

We report optical and nonlinear optical properties of CuS quantum dots and nanoparticles prepared through a nontoxic, green, one-pot synthesis method. The presence of surface states and defects in the quantum dots are evident from the luminescent behavior and enhanced nonlinear optical properties measured using the open aperture Z-scan, employing 5 ns laser pulses at 532 nm. The quantum dots exhibit large effective third order nonlinear optical coefficients with a relatively lower optical limiting threshold of 2.3 J cm−2, and the optical nonlinearity arises largely from absorption saturation and excited state absorption. Results suggest that these materials are potential candidates for designing efficient optical limiters with applications in laser safety devices.  相似文献

The nonlinear optical nonlinearities of a fluorine-containing azoic dye in tetrahydrofuran have been investigated by using Z-scan technique with picosecond and nanosecond lasers. The experimental results reveal that the azoic dye has large optical nonlinearity under the excitations of picosecond and nanosecond 532 nm. At the picosecond 532 nm the solution presents negative nonlinear refraction due to the electronic effect, while the larger nonlinear refraction under nanosecond laser excitation is induced by thermal effect. Moreover, the different nonlinear absorption behavior under picosecond and nanosecond excitations is analyzed.  相似文献

Structural modification of carbon nanotubes in combination with metallic nanoparticles is reported. An enhancement in the nonlinear optical refraction of multi-wall carbon nanotubes by the incorporation of platinum nanoparticles was observed. Comparative results were analyzed taking into account the participation of single-wall carbon nanotubes that originate a decrease in the nonlinear optical response of the multi-wall carbon nanotubes integrating a thin film. A Nd:YAG laser system featuring 532 nm wavelength with 4 ns pulse duration in a two-wave mixing experiment was employed for exploring the studied optical nonlinearities of the samples. The contribution of optical processes to mechanical characteristics dependent on high optical irradiance in carbon nanotubes was described. A variation in the mass density associated to the optically irradiated tubes allowed us to calculate the change in Young's modulus in a thin film configuration. The estimation of an opto-mechanical phenomenon was based on the evaluation of the nonlinearity of index responsible for the optical Kerr effect. According to Raman and optical evaluations, the inclusion of metallic nanoparticles in carbon structures results in a modification of surface that also gives origin to noticeable optical Kerr nonlinearities. Potential applications for developing laser-induced controlled opto-mechanical nanohybrid systems can be contemplated.  相似文献

A novel organometallic compound, ethyltriphenylphosphonium bis(2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato)aurate (III), abbreviated as TPEPADT, was synthesized. The TPEPADT doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin film with a mass fraction of 1% (1 wt.%) was prepared by using a spin-coating method. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of TPEPADT in acetonitrile solution and TPEPADT-doped PMMA thin film were investigated by using the laser Z-scan technique at the wavelength 1064 nm with laser duration of 20 ps. The linear refractive index of the polymer thin film was also studied. The Z-scan curves revealed that both TPEPADT in acetonitrile solution and the polymer thin film possessed negative nonlinear refraction, exhibiting a self-defocusing effect and nonlinear absorption was negligible under the experimental conditions used. The nonlinear refractive index was calculated to be ?1.9 × 10?18 m2/W for TPEPADT in acetonitrile solution and ?8.9 × 10?15 m2/W for the polymer thin film. These results suggest that TPEPADT have potential for the application of all-optical switching devices.  相似文献

Third order nonlinear refractive index of three anthraquinone dyes, i.e., Solvent Blue 59, Solvent Blue 35 and Solvent Green 3 doped in 1294-1b nematic liquid crystal (NLC) were studied by the single beam Z-scan technique using a continuous-wave He–Ne laser at 632.8 nm. The negative nonlinear refractive index (n2) in the order of 10? 5 cm2/w for all samples was obtained. We believe that, this large nonlinearity is owing to Janossy effect and the difference in the nonlinear refractive index of our dyes can be described by the structures of dyes and the interactions between dyes and 1294-1b molecules. So as to understand the effect of dye structure on nonlinearity enhancement, the dichroic ratio of these dyes in 1294-1b was measured using polarized spectroscopy.  相似文献

We present the results from investigations of the nonlinear properties of Congo red solutions using Z-scan technique with a continuous wave argon ion laser at 514 nm. The magnitude and sign of the third-order nonlinear refractive index n2 of aqueous solution of Congo red were determined. The nonlinear refractive index was found to vary with concentration. Third-order nonlinearity is dominated by nonlinear refractive index, which leads to strong self-defocusing and self diffraction in the samples studied. A pump and probe technique was used to investigate the origin of nonlinearity. Furthermore the nonlinear refractive index effect was utilized to demonstrate all optical switching. The optical limiting behavior based on nonlinear refractive index was investigated.  相似文献

The silver colloidal solutions were prepared by in situ synthesis technique in the presence of the Polymethyl Methacrylate, which was polymerized by reversible addition-fragmentation transfer. The UV–VIS spectra and transmission electron microscopy had shown the formation of sphere silver nanoparticles with average size of 10 nm. Nonlinear optical properties as a function of silver concentration were studied using Z-scan technique with 13 ns pulse duration at 532 nm. The optical nonlinearity enhancement was observed by increasing the concentration. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) was measured to 1.045 × 10−11 esu when the concentration was 2.13 mg/ml. Besides, the sample was founded to exhibit a shift from saturable absorption to reverse saturable absorption at higher incident laser energy. The reverse saturable absorption was observed to be responsible for the optical limiting characteristics in our experiments.  相似文献

Nonlinear refraction in various polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) solid hosts when doped with fluorescent organic dyes, commonly used as a laser active medium, has been studied. The observed thermal lensing effect arising from optical nonlinearity, results from non-radiative energy transfer from the dye molecules to the solid matrix and is, therefore, strongly dependent on the thermal properties and material parameters of the polymeric host. The non-linear index of refraction, n2, for each sample of dye doped polymeric host, has been measured employing the standard Z-scan technique. These measured values of n2, have been used to determine the extent of variation in the index of refraction with varying temperature, dn/dT, for the various host materials. Estimation of dn/dT is critical in determining the extent of thermal lensing in the dye doped solid-state medium, that in turn determines the spatial quality and divergence of the generated laser beam delivered by a dye doped solid-state laser system. Optical bistability has been observed in highly concentrated fluorescein dye solutions and in thin (1 m) doped polymeric films. At concentrations larger than 10–5 mole/l dye dimers are formed. For fluorescein dye, the dimer-monomer equilibrium constant is 105 l/mole so that most of the dye species are in the dimer form. At 480 nm the dimer absorption cross section is 10–18 cm2/molecule, while that for the dye monomer molecule is 7.6×10–17 cm2/molecule. Upon laser excitation dimers dissociate to form monomers thus providing a highly nonlinear laser induced absorption. This high nonlinear absorption coefficient can be utilized for optically bistable response of the dye system.Optical bistability was observed by placing dye solutions or dye thin films inside a Fabry-Perot resonator and exciting it with 480 nm dye laser pulses of 10 ns duration. The effect is more pronounced in 10–4 mole/l fluorescein than in 10–6 mole/l fluorescein in which dimer formation is not that efficient. In disodium fluorescein no significant dimer formation is observed even at 10–3 mole/l dye concentration. The observed bistability both in solution and in thin films can be explained in terms of recent models for optical bistability in nonlinearly absorbing molecular systems.  相似文献

Chromium doped zinc oxide thin solid films were deposited on soda–lime glass substrates. The photoconductivity of the material and its influence on the optical behavior was evaluated. A non-alkoxide sol–gel synthesis approach was used for the preparation of the samples. An enhancement of the photoluminescence response exhibited by the resulting photoconductive films with embedded chromium nanoclusters is presented. The modification in the photoconduction induced by a 445 nm wavelength was measured and then associated with the participation of the optical absorptive response. In order to investigate the third order optical nonlinearities of the samples, a standard time-resolved Optical Kerr Gate configuration with 80 fs pulses at 830 nm was used and a quasi-instantaneous pure electronic nonlinearity without the contribution of nonlinear optical absorption was observed. We estimate that from the inclusion of Cr nanoclusters into the sample results a strong optical Kerr effect originated by quantum confinement. The large photoluminescence response and the important refractive nonlinearity of the photoconductive samples seem to promise potential applications for the development of multifunctional all-optical nanodevices.  相似文献

Sodium bitartrate monohydrate (SBTMH) a new organometallic nonlinear optical material, with molecular formula, [C4H5NaO6 · H2O] has been synthesized at ambient temperature. Spectral, thermal and optical techniques have been employed to characterize the new material. Bulk single crystals of size 13 × 4 × 4 mm3 of SBTMH have been grown by slow cooling method. The unit cell parameters of the grown crystal were determined by single crystal XRD. Functional groups present in the sample were identified by FTIR spectral analysis. Thermal stability of SBTMH was determined using TGA/DTA. The grown crystals exhibit nonlinear properties. The dielectric response of the crystal with varying frequencies was studied. The optical transparency range and the lower cut-off wavelength of the material were identified from the UV–vis–NIR absorption spectrum.  相似文献

Stable gold nanoparticles have been prepared by using soluble starch as both the reducing and stabilizing agents; this reaction was carried out at 40 °C for 5 h. The obtained gold nanoparticles were characterized by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and z-scan technique. The size of these nanoparticles was found to be in the range of 12–22 nm as analyzed using transmission electron micrographs. The optical properties of gold nanoparticles have been measured showing the surface plasmon resonance. The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were investigated by using a continuous-wave (CW) He–Ne laser beam with a wavelength of 632.8 nm at three different incident intensities by means of single beam techniques. The nonlinear refractive indices of gold nanoparticles were obtained from close aperture z-scan in order of 10?7 cm2/W. Then, they were compared with diffraction patterns observed in far-field. The nonlinear absorption of these nanoparticles was obtained from open aperture z-scan technique. The values of nonlinear absorption coefficient are obtained in order of 10?1 cm/W.  相似文献

Maximal optical nonlinearity obtainable in amorphous materials at telecommunication wavelengths of ∼1.5 μm is predicted. Applying a semiconductor concept, we suggest that nonlinear properties become greater in the materials with smaller optical gaps. This trend makes the chalcogenide glass such as As2Se3 promising for fiber devices (∼1 m), including optical switches, intensity stabilizers, and stimulated Raman amplifiers. However, for integrated devices with optical path lengths of ∼1 cm, greater nonlinearity is needed.  相似文献
