Aqueous solutions of a poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide)–poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer, Pluronic F108 (PEO133PPO50PEO133), ranging from 1 to 35 wt %, were studied with differential scanning microcalorimetry and rheology. The thermoreversible micellization and gelation were examined through a heating process and a subsequent cooling process at a fixed rate of 1 °C/min. The critical micellization temperature (CMT), determined by the onset temperature of the endothermic peak in the heating process, was a decreasing function of the F108 concentration. A small secondary endothermic peak appeared only when the polymer concentration was 22.5 wt % or higher, indicating that there was a sol–gel transition but that the gelation was a nearly athermic process. Upon heating, an abrupt increase was observed in both the dynamic storage modulus (G′) and dynamic loss modulus (G″) within a narrow temperature range. TG′, the temperature for the transition in G′, was a linear decreasing function of the polymer concentration and different from CMT. TG′ tended to approach CMT with an increasing F108 concentration. Beyond this transition, G′ reached a plateau, and the plateau increased in height and broadened with the polymer concentration. The value of G′ at 70 °C (G70) could be approximately scaled with concentration c by G70c7.3. In addition, the definition for a gel to obey G′ > G″ was valid only when c was greater than 22.5 wt %, and this was in agreement with the secondary endothermic peak found with differential scanning calorimetry. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A surface‐active p‐vinyl benzyloxy‐ω‐hydroxy‐poly(ethylene oxide) macromonomer containing 22 pendant structural units of ethylene oxide (St–PEO22) was synthesized with an initiation method. Because of its solubility in a large variety of solvents, the free‐radical copolymerization with electron‐acceptor N‐phenylmaleimide (NPMI) was performed at 60 °C in benzene and tetrahydrofuran (THF) as isotropic media and in a water–THF mixture or water as a heterogeneous medium. Oil‐soluble 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile and water‐soluble 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanovaleric acid) were used as the initiators at fixed concentrations. Two different St–PEO22/NPMI comonomer ratios (1/1 and 3/7) at a fixed total comonomer concentration in the polymerization system were used. The structures, compositions, and microstructure peculiarities of the obtained alternating, amphiphilic, comblike copolymers were determined by NMR analysis. For the copolymers synthesized in hydrophilic media, differential scanning calorimetry showed, near the endothermic peak attributed to the melting of the poly(ethylene oxide) side chains, the presence of a second peak due to the partially ordered phase that could exist between the crystalline state and the isotropic melt. Also, the thermal stability of the obtained copolymers was studied with thermogravimetric analysis. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 479–492, 2005  相似文献

Well‐defined poly(L ‐lactide)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PLLA‐b‐PEO) copolymers with different branch arms were synthesized via the controlled ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide followed by a coupling reaction with carboxyl‐terminated poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO); these copolymers included both star‐shaped copolymers having four arms (4sPLLA‐b‐PEO) and six arms (6sPLLA‐b‐PEO) and linear analogues having one arm (LPLLA‐b‐PEO) and two arms (2LPLLA‐b‐PEO). The maximal melting point, cold‐crystallization temperature, and degree of crystallinity (Xc) of the poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) block within PLLA‐b‐PEO decreased as the branch arm number increased, whereas Xc of the PEO block within the copolymers inversely increased. This was mainly attributed to the relatively decreasing arm length ratio of PLLA to PEO, which resulted in various PLLA crystallization effects restricting the PEO block. These results indicated that both the PLLA and PEO blocks within the block copolymers mutually influenced each other, and the crystallization of both the PLLA and PEO blocks within the PLLA‐b‐PEO copolymers could be adjusted through both the branch arm number and the arm length of each block. Moreover, the spherulitic growth rate (G) decreased as the branch arm number increased: G6sPLLA‐b‐PEO < G4sPLLA‐b‐PEO < G2LPLLA‐b‐PEO < GLPLLA‐b‐PEO. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) oligomers having alkali metal thiolate groups on the chain ends (PEO m -SM+) were prepared as an ion conductive matrix. The molecular weight of the PEO part (m) and the content of the thiolate groups in the molecule were changed to analyze the effect of carrier ion concentration in the bulk. In a series of potassium salt derivatives, PEO350-SK showed the highest ionic conductivity of 6.42 × 10−5 S/cm at 50 °C. In spite of a poor degree of dissociation which was derived from the acidity of the thiolate groups, PEO m -SM showed quite high ionic conductivity among other PEO/salt hybrids. PEO m -SM had glass transition temperatures (T g) 20 °C lower than other PEO/salt hybrids. Lowering the T g was concluded to be effective in providing higher ionic conductivity for PEO-based polymer electrolytes. Received: 30 April 1999 / Accepted: 20 June 1999  相似文献

The aggregation of sodium dodecyl sulfonate (AS) in aqueous solution containing various amounts of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) has been investigated by different experimental techniques. The experimental techniques include surface tension, conductivity, viscosity, electron spin resonance (ESR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The critical aggregate concentration of AS on polymer strands as well as the concentration where the polymer becomes saturated with surfactant has been determined. Both ESR and NMR results indicate that the AS–PEO complex forms a more “open” structure and that PEO may penetrate into the interior of the micelles. Optical waveguide spectroscopy was used under non-contact conditions to analyze the visible absorption spectrum of poly(ethylene oxide) (M w = 150) modified cytochrome c (PEO150-cyt.c) adsorbed on an indium tin oxide (ITO) glass electrode. The redox reactions of the adsorbed PEO150-cyt.c were dynamically measured in situ in PEO oligomers (M w = 200). It was confirmed that PEO modification of cyt.c is effective in maintaining the redox activity of the cyt.c after adsorption on the ITO glass electrode. The PEO150-cyt.c adsorbed on the electrode re-dissolved gradually in PEO oligomer. Against this, PEO1000-cyt.c having longer PEO chains (M w = 1000) was found to be adsorbed stably on the electrode. Macromolecule/laponite nanomaterials were studied by DSC and X-ray diffraction techniques. The matrices are poly(ethylene) glycols at various molecular masses and poly(ethylene oxides)-poly(propylene oxides)-poly(ethylene oxides) tri-block copolymers. The latter were tuned by modulating the molecular masses, at constant hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio, and the hydrophilicity. For all the investigated systems, the enthalpy of melting (ΔH m) is nearly constant up to a given composition thereafter it increases monotonically reaching the value of the pure macromolecule. We proposed a model to interpret the DSC data. Briefly, it was invoked a mechanism of interaction following which some segments of the adsorbed macromolecule are anchored to the laponite (RD) particles and the remaining segments are radiating away from the surface. The portion of the macromolecule in contact with RD does not contribute to ΔH m whereas that radiating away from the clay does. Once that the RD surface is saturated, the excess of the macromolecule behaves like the pure one. The proposed model allowed to compute successfully the ΔH m values. The X-ray diffraction experiments ruled out the polymer intercalation between the silicate sheets.  相似文献

The amphiphilic A2B star‐shaped copolymers of polystyrene‐b‐[poly(ethylene oxide)]2 (PS‐b‐PEO2) were synthesized via the combination of atom transfer nitroxide radical coupling (ATNRC) with ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) mechanisms. First, a novel V‐shaped 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl‐PEO2 (TEMPO‐PEO2) with a TEMPO group at middle chain was obtained by ROP of ethylene oxdie monomers using 4‐(2,3‐dihydroxypropoxy)‐TEMPO and diphenylmethyl potassium as coinitiator. Then, the linear PS with a bromine end group (PS‐Br) was obtained by ATRP of styrene monomers using ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate as initiator. Finally, the copolymers of PS‐b‐PEO2 were obtained by ATNRC between the TEMPO and bromide groups on TEMPO‐PEO2 and PS‐Br, respectively. The structures of target copolymers and their precursors were all well‐defined by gel permeation chromatographic and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic H‐shaped [poly(ethylene oxide)]3‐polystyrene‐[poly(ethylene oxide)]3(PEO3‐PS‐PEO3) copolymer was synthesized by 2‐methyl‐2‐nitrosopropane (MNP) induced single electron transfer nitroxide radical coupling (SETNRC) using PEO3‐(PS‐Br) as a single precursor. First, the A3B star‐shaped precursor PEO3‐(PS‐Br) was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using three‐arm star‐shaped PEO3‐Br as macro‐initiator. Then, in the presence of Cu(I)Br/Me6TREN, the bromide group at PS end was sequentially transferred into carbon‐centered radical by single electron transfer and then nitroxide radical by reacting with MNP in mixed solvents of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/tetrahydrofuran (THF), and in situ generated nitroxide radical could again capture another carbon‐centered radical by fast SETNRC to form target PEO3‐PS‐PEO3 copolymer. The MNP induced SETNRC could reach to a high efficiency of 90% within 60 min. After the product PEO3‐PS‐PEO3 was cleaved by ascorbic acid, the SEC results showed that there was about 30% fraction of product formed by single electron transfer radical coupling (SETRC) between carbon‐centered radicals. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of the lamellar growth direction, extinction rings, and spherulitic boundaries of poly(butylene succinate) (PBSU) on the spherulitic growth of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were investigated in miscible blends of the two crystalline polymers. In the crystallization process from a homogeneous melt, PBSU first developed volume‐filling spherulites, and then PEO spherulites nucleated and grew inside the PBSU spherulites. The lamellar growth direction of PEO was identical with that of PBSU even when the PBSU content was about 5 wt %. PEO, which intrinsically does not exhibit banded spherulites, showed apparent extinction rings inside the banded spherulites of PBSU. The growth rate of a PEO spherulite, GPEO, was influenced not only by the blend composition and the crystallization temperature of PEO, but also by the growth direction with respect to PBSU lamellae, the boundaries of PBSU spherulites, and the crystallization temperature of PBSU, TPBSU. The value of GPEO first increased with decreasing TPBSU when a PEO spherulite grew inside a single PBSU spherulite. Then, GPEO decreased when TPBSU was further decreased and a PEO spherulite grew through many tiny PBSU spherulites. This behavior was discussed based on the aforementioned factors affecting GPEO. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 47: 539–547, 2009  相似文献

This article discusses an effective route to prepare amphiphilic diblock copolymers containing a poly(ethylene oxide) block and a polyolefin block that includes semicrystalline thermoplastics, such as polyethylene and syndiotactic polystyrene (s‐PS), and elastomers, such as poly(ethylene‐co‐1‐octene) and poly(ethylene‐co‐styrene) random copolymers. The broad choice of polyolefin blocks provides the amphiphilic copolymers with a wide range of thermal properties from high melting temperature ~270 °C to low glass‐transition temperature ~?60 °C. The chemistry involves two reaction steps, including the preparation of a borane group‐terminated polyolefin by the combination of a metallocene catalyst and a borane chain‐transfer agent as well as the interconversion of a borane terminal group to an anionic (? O?K+) terminal group for the subsequent ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The overall reaction process resembles a transformation from the metallocene polymerization of α‐olefins to the ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The well‐defined reaction mechanisms in both steps provide the diblock copolymer with controlled molecular structure in terms of composition, molecular weight, moderate molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn < 2.5), and absence of homopolymer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary : High-yield synthesis of gold microplates is achieved through autoreduction of hydrogen tetrachloroaureate (III) hydrate (HAuCl4 · 3H2O) in aqueous solutions of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymer (Pluronic L64, EO13PO30EO13) at ambient conditions, in the absence of added energy, reductant, or other surfactants. The formation by the amphiphilic block copolymer of lyotropic liquid crystals (e.g., ordered cylindrical/hexagonal or lamellar phases) is not required for templating the formation of such microplates.  相似文献

Poly(styrene-graft-ethylene oxide), having alkyl chains (C12 or C18) on the polystyrene main chain or on the poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) side chains, were synthesized. The main chain was alkylated by first ionizing amide groups in a styrene/acrylamide copolymer with tert-butoxide, and then using the amide anions as sites for reactions with 1-bromoalkanes. An excess of amide anions was used in the reaction, and the remaining anions were subsequently utilized as initiator sites for the anionic polymerization of ethylene oxide (EO). Synthesis of poly(styrene-graft-ethylene oxide) with alkylated side chains was accomplished by polymerization of EO onto the ionized styrene/acrylamide copolymer, followed by an alkylation of the terminal alkoxide anions with 1-bromoalkanes. The alkylated graft copolymers were structurally characterized by using elemental analysis, 1H NMR, GPC, and IR spectroscopy. DSC analysis showed that only graft copolymers with PEO contents exceeding about 50 wt % and side chain crystallinities comparable to those of homo-PEO. Main chain alkylated graft copolymers generally had higher crystalinities, as compared to nonalkylated and side chain alkylated samples. The graft copolymers absorbed water corresponding to one water molecule per EO unit at low PEO contents. The water absorption increased progressively at PEO contents above 30 wt % for main chain alkylated samples and above 50 wt % for non-alkylated samples. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Highly conductive solid polymeric electrolytes based upon low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) and ethylene oxide/propylene oxide copolymers blended with up to 50% by volume of poly(methyl methacrylate) have been synthesized using LiCF3SO3 (25:1 ether oxygen to cation ratio). Room-temperature ionic conductivities were measured to be in the range 10?4 to 10?5 S/cm for poly(methyl methacrylate) concentrations up to 30% by volume. In some cases, the addition of the poly(methyl methacrylate) enhanced the conductivity. All of the electrolytes studied were either amorphous or crystallized below 0°C. The variation of conductivity with temperature and polymer composition was measured and the results were analyzed in terms of effective medium theory and semiempirical considerations. Ionic transport is coupled to the structural relaxation of the polymer segments. At lower temperatures activated processes were required. Both charge carrier mobility and charge concentration were found to contribute to conduction. The effective medium theory quantitatively describes conductivities of amorphous heterogenous systems of limited miscibility (microphase separation) quite well. For miscible or partially crystalline systems other effects not incorporated in this theory play an important role, and conductivities are measured to be higher than theoretically predicted. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A copolymerization of macromonomer poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with a styryl end group (PEOS) and styrene was successfully carried out in the presence of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) with 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy end group (PCLT). The resulting copolymer showed a narrower molecular weight distribution and controlled molecular weight. The effect of the molecular weight and concentration of PCLT and PEOS on the copolymerization are discussed. The purity of PEOS exerted a significant effect on the copolymerization; when the diol contents of PEO macromonomer were greater than 1%, the crosslinking product was found. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The self-diffusion of poly (ethylene oxide)-poly (propylene oxide)-poly (ethylene oxide) block copolymers dissolved in deuterated water was investigated by means of pulsed field gradient NMR (PFG-NMR). The polymer forms micelles in the solution and, with increasing temperature, clouding and phase demixing occurs. The self-diffusion coefficient indicates the association of the polymer molecules in the vicinity of the cloud point because of its maximum with increasing temperature. Above the cloud point, two kinds of diffusing species are observed due to phase separation. The faster diffusing species is attributed to the polymer-poor phase. The self-diffusion coefficient of the polymer-rich phase species decreases with increasing temperature above the cloud point due to further association and dehydration. The correlation length of the diffusing associates, calculated from the self-diffusion coefficient and the viscosity by means of the Stokes-Einstein equation is nearly independent of temperature and concentration up to 30 wt-% polymer concentration. The correlation length is about 1.4 nm. It shows a slight maximum at the cloud point.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(L-lactic acid) (PEO-PLLA) diblock copolymers were synthesized via a ring opening polymerization from poly(ethylene oxide) and l -lactide. Stannous octoate was used as a catalyst in a solution polymerization with toluene as the solvent. Their physicochemical properties were investigated by using infrared spectroscopy, 1H-NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry, as well as the observational data of gel-sol transitions in aqueous solutions. Aqueous solutions of PEO-PLLA diblock copolymers changed from a gel phase to a sol phase with increasing temperature when their polymer concentrations are above a critical gel concentration. As the PLLA block length increased, the gel-sol transition temperature increased. For comparison, diblock copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(l -lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) [PEO-P(LLA/GA)] and poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(dl -lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) [PEO-P(DLLA/GA)] were synthesized by the same methods, and their gel-sol transition behaviors were also investigated. The gel-sol transition properties of these diblock copolymers are influenced by the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance of the copolymer, block length, hydrophobicity, and stereoregularity of the hydrophobic block of the copolymer. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The phase transition between unimer and micellar phases of poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide)–poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO–PPO–PEO) triblock copolymer Pluronic P105 in aqueous solution has been investigated as a function of temperature using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The transition of 8 wt% Pluronic P105 in aqueous solution was found to occur at 25 °C. As temperature increases, PO blocks appear to be stretched conformers with strong interchain interaction, and the formation of a hydrophobic core in the micellar phase. The EO chains are found to change to a more disordered structure with low-chain packing density from the unimer phase to the micellar phase. Both the EO and PO blocks exhibit dehydration during the phase transition. Received: 17 September 1998 Accepted in revised form: 10 December 1998  相似文献

Graft copolymers containing poly(ethylene oxide) side chains on a polystyrene backbone have been synthesized. Styrene copolymers synthesized by free radical mechanism and containing between 5 and 15 mol % acrylamide or methacrylamide were used as backbones. The amide groups in the copolymers were ionized by using potassium tert-butoxide or potassium naphthalene, and grafting was achieved by utilizing the amide anions as initiator sites for the polymerization of ethylene oxide in 2-ethoxyethyl ether at 65°C. The graft copolymers were characterized with respect to molecular weight and composition using elemental analysis, NMR, gel permeation chromatography, IR, and viscosity measurements. The size of the side chains were between 600 and 2000 g/mol. GPC results from a hydrolyzed graft copolymer sample suggest a narrow size distribution for the poly(ethylene oxide) grafts. Solution properties of the graft copolymers were investigated in different toluene/methanol mixtures. The intrinsic viscosities of the graft copolymers were found to depend primarily on the poly(ethylene oxide) content rather than the graft density or the poly(ethylene oxide) chain length. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

ABA‐type amphiphilic tri‐block copolymers were successfully synthesized from poly(ethylene oxide) derivatives through anionic polymerization. When poly(styrene) anions were reacted with telechelic bromine‐terminated poly(ethylene oxide) ( 1 ) in 2:1 mole ratio, poly(styrene)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(styrene) tri‐block copolymers were formed. Similarly, stable telechelic carbanion‐terminated poly(ethylene oxide), prepared from 1,1‐diphenylethylene‐terminated poly (ethylene oxide) ( 2 ) and sec‐BuLi, was also used to polymerize styrene and methyl methacrylate separately, as a result, poly (styrene)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(styrene) and poly (methyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate) tri‐block copolymers were formed respectively. All these tri‐block copolymers and poly(ethylene oxide) derivatives, 1 and 2 , were characterized by spectroscopic, calorimetric, and chromatographic techniques. Theoretical molecular weights of the tri‐block copolymers were found to be similar to the experimental molecular weights, and narrow polydispersity index was observed for all the tri‐block copolymers. Differential scanning calorimetric studies confirmed the presence of glass transition temperatures of poly(ethylene oxide), poly(styrene), and poly(methyl methacrylate) blocks in the tri‐block copolymers. Poly(styrene)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(styrene) tri‐block copolymers, prepared from polystyryl anion and 1 , were successfully used to prepare micelles, and according to the transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering results, the micelles were spherical in shape with mean average diameter of 106 ± 5 nm. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
