Oxidation states and CO ligand exchange kinetics in a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of an oxo-centered triruthenium cluster [Ru(3)(mu3-O)(mu-CH3COO)6(CO)(L1)(L2)] (L1 = [(NC5H4)CH2NHC(O)(CH2)10S-]2, L2 = 4-methylpyridine) have been extensively investigated on the surface of a gold electrode in aqueous and nonaqueous solutions. The SAM exhibits three consecutive one-electron transfers and four oxidation states, which have been characterized by electrochemistry, in situ infrared spectroscopy, and in situ sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy measurements. The original electron-localized state of the Ru cluster center was changed to electron delocalization states by oxidation or reduction of the central Ru ions. These changes are revealed by the IR absorptions of the CO ligand and the bridging acetate ligands of the triruthenium cluster in the SAM. The IR absorptions of the two kinds of ligands are strongly dependent on the oxidation state of the Ru cluster center. One-electron oxidation of the central Ru ion in the SAM triggers a CO ligand liberation process. Solvent molecules may then occupy the CO site to result in a CO-free SAM. One-electron reduction of this CO-free SAM in a CO-saturated solution leads to re-coordination of the CO ligand into the SAM. Both processes can be precisely controlled by tuning the electrode potential. The kinetics of the CO exchange cycle in the SAM, including liberation and coordination, has been investigated by in situ IR and SFG measurements for the first time. The CO exchange cycle is significantly dependent on the temperature. The reaction rate greatly decreases with decreasing solution temperature, which is an important factor in the CO ligand exchange process. The activation energies of both CO liberation and coordination have been evaluated from the reaction rate constants obtained at various temperatures.

The adsorption of CO on low index copper single crystals in electrochemical environments has been investigated. The results, analysed through a combination of in situ infrared spectroscopy, DFT and cyclic voltammetry, reveal a unique adsorption behaviour when compared to previous studies on copper and the more widely studied noble metal surfaces. By employing small, weakly specifically adsorbed electrolytes, it is shown that carbon monoxide is adsorbed over a much wider electrode potential range than previously reported. The electrochemical Stark shift (δν/δE) observed is similar for the three Cu(hkl) surfaces examined despite different surface coverages. Most notably, however, is an electrochemical feature observed at ca. -1.0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) on the (110) surface. It is proposed that this voltammetric feature arises from the reduction/oxidation of Cu(δ+) surface sites involved in the binding of carbon monoxide with the participation of the electrolyte anion. This provides additional specific sites for CO adsorption. DFT calculations support the proposed presence of low-coordination copper sites stabilised by electrolyte anions. An experimental electron transfer rate constant of 4.2 s(-1) to the Cu(δ+) surface sites formed was found. These new observations concerning the surface electrochemistry of CO on Cu indicate that the electrocatalytic behaviour of Cu electrodes in processes such as CO(2) reduction need to be re-evaluated to take account of the rich adsorption behaviour of CO, including the co-adsorption of the electrolyte anion to these sites.

The aim of this work is to elucidate the initial steps of the electrochemical oxidation of Ag(111) in alkaline electrolytes. We use electrochemical as well as ex situ (XPS) and in situ (SHG) spectroscopic techniques to reconstruct the Ag(111)/electrolyte interface as a complex dynamic entity. Moving in the direction from negative to positive potentials we first observe specific adsorption of hydroxide ions, which starts at ca. -1.1 V vs. Ag/Ag2O in 0.1 M NaOH. SHG data prove that hydroxide retains its negative charge. At -0.3 V oxidation of the surface sets in with the formation of negatively charged adsorbed oxygen species and Ag+ ions, which give rise to peaks at 528.2 +/- 0.2 eV and at 367.7 eV in the O 1s and the Ag 3d(5/2) XP spectra, respectively. Around -0.1 V the adlayer is transformed into an ordered surface oxide phase which grows via a nucleation and growth mechanism. Above the reversible Ag/Ag2O potential the 2D Ag(I) oxide transforms into a 3D Ag(I) oxide. The electrochemical oxidation is compared with the previously studied gas-phase process, demonstrating both remarkable similarities as well as some differences.

The dynamics of the electrooxidation of adsorbed CO, COads, on polycrystalline Pt microelectrodes has been examined in CO-saturated 0.5 M H2SO4 and 0.5 M HClO4 aqueous solutions, using in situ, time-resolved, normalized differential reflectance spectroscopy lambda = 633 nm). Attention was focused on the unique dependence of COads oxidation on the potential at which the adsorbed full CO monolayer is assembled (i.e., hydrogen adsorption/desorption vs the double-layer region) using both fast linear scan voltammetry and potential step techniques. As evidenced from the data collected, COads oxidation at a fixed potential proceeds at slower rates when the monolayer is formed in the double- layer region compared to when it is formed in the hydrogen adsorption/desorption region. Possible explanations for this effect are discussed.

In order to elucidate electronic effects on the oxidation of CO on small Ru clusters, we investigated this reaction on well defined Ru/Au(111) model systems via parallel in-situ STM studies of the structure and electrochemical deposition of Ru on Au(111) in H2SO4 solution and cyclic voltammetry of CO monolayer oxidation on these surfaces. The Ru deposit consists of nanoscale islands, which coalesce with increasing coverage. The Ru saturation coverage depends on the deposition potential, resulting in Ru submonolayer (>0.1 V), (defective) monolayer (≥−0.1 V), and multilayer films (<−0.1 V). At potentials >0.6 V irreversible formation of Ru oxide/hydroxide species is observed, which can be partly reduced in the range 0.4 to 0.0 V. CO stripping commences at ≈0.1 V and occurs over a broad potential range. From the stripping charge a local CO coverage on the Ru monolayer islands of 0.7 ML was estimated. The observed influence of the morphology of the Ru deposit on the CO stripping voltammetry is explained by (local) variations in the CO adsorption energy due to electronic modifications of the Ru film.

Gold-based catalysts have been of intense interests in recent years, being regarded as a new generation of catalysts due to their unusually high catalytic performance. For example, CO oxidation on Au/TiO(2) has been found to occur at a temperature as low as 200 K. Despite extensive studies in the field, the microscopic mechanism of CO oxidation on Au-based catalysts remains controversial. Aiming to provide insight into the catalytic roles of Au, we have performed extensive density functional theory calculations for the elementary steps in CO oxidation on Au surfaces. O atom adsorption, CO adsorption, O(2) dissociation, and CO oxidation on a series of Au surfaces, including flat surfaces, defects and small clusters, have been investigated in detail. Many transition states involved are located, and the lowest energy pathways are determined. We find the following: (i) the most stable site for O atom on Au is the bridge site of step edge, not a kink site; (ii) O(2) dissociation on Au (O(2)-->2O(ad)) is hindered by high barriers with the lowest barrier being 0.93 eV on a step edge; (iii) CO can react with atomic O with a substantially lower barrier, 0.25 eV, on Au steps where CO can adsorb; (iv) CO can react with molecular O(2) on Au steps with a low barrier of 0.46 eV, which features an unsymmetrical four-center intermediate state (O-O-CO); and (v) O(2) can adsorb on the interface of Au/TiO(2) with a reasonable chemisorption energy. On the basis of our calculations, we suggest that (i) O(2) dissociation on Au surfaces including particles cannot occur at low temperatures; (ii) CO oxidation on Au/inactive-materials occurs on Au steps via a two-step mechanism: CO+O(2)-->CO(2)+O, and CO+O-->CO(2); and (iii) CO oxidation on Au/active-materials also follows the two-step mechanism with reactions occurring at the interface.

The potential of in-situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy measurements in an attenuated total reflection configuration (ATR-FTIRS) for the evaluation of reaction pathways, elementary reaction steps, and their kinetics is demonstrated for formic acid electrooxidation on a Pt film electrode. Quantitative kinetic information on two elementary steps, formic acid dehydration and CO(ad) oxidation, and on the contributions of the related pathways in the dual path reaction mechanism are derived from IR spectroscopic signals in simultaneous electrochemical and ATR-FTIRS measurements over a wide temperature range (25-80 degrees C). Linearly and multiply bonded CO(ad) and bridge-bonded formate are the only formic acid related stable reaction intermediates detected. With increasing temperature, the steady-state IR signal of CO(ad) increases, while that of formate decreases. Reaction rates for CO(ad) formation via formic acid dehydration and for CO(ad) oxidation as well as the activation energies of these processes were determined at different temperatures, potentials, and surface conditions (with and without preadsorbed CO from formic acid dehydration) from the temporal evolution of the IR intensities of CO(ad) during adsorption/reaction transients, using an IR intensity-CO(ad) coverage calibration. At potentials up to 0.75 V and temperatures from 25 to 80 degrees C, the "indirect" CO pathway contributes less than 5% (at potentials < or =0.6 V significantly below 1%) to the total Faradaic reaction current, making the "direct" pathway by far the dominant one under the present reaction conditions. Much higher activation energies for CO(ad) formation and CO(ad) oxidation compared with the effective activation energy of the total reaction, derived from the Faradaic currents, support this conclusion.

In-situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) coupled with cyclic voltammetry was used to examine the adsorption of carbon monoxide (CO) molecules on an ordered Au(111) electrode in 0.1 M HClO4. Molecular resolution STM revealed the formation of several commensurate CO adlattices, but the (9 x radical 3) structure eventually prevailed with time. The CO adlayer was completely electrooxidized to CO2 at 0.9 V versus RHE in CO-free 0.1 M HClO(4), as indicated by a broad and irreversible anodic peak which appeared at this potential in a positive potential sweep from 0.05 to 1.6 V. A maximal coverage of 0.3 was estimated for CO admolecules from the amount of charge involved in this feature. Real-time in-situ STM imaging allowed direct visualization of the adsorption process of CO on Au(111) at 0.1 V, showing the lifting of (radical 3 x 22) reconstruction of Au(111) and the formation of ordered CO adlattices. The (9 x radical 3) structure observed in CO-saturated perchloric acid has a coverage of 0.28, which is approximately equal to that determined from coulometry. Switching the potential from 0.1 to -0.1 V restored the reconstructed Au(111) with no change in the (9 x radical 3)-CO adlattice. However, the reconstructed Au(111) featured a pairwise corrugation pattern with two nearest pairs separated by 74 +/- 1 A, corresponding to a 14% increase from the ideal value of 65.6 A known for the ( radical 3 x 22) reconstruction. Molecular resolution STM further revealed that protrusions resulting from CO admolecules in the (9 x radical 3) structure exhibited distinctly different corrugation heights, suggesting that the CO molecules resided at different sites on Au(111). This ordered structure predominated in the potential range between 0.1 and 0.7 V; however, it was converted into new structures of (7 x radical 7) and ( radical 43 x 2 radical 13) on the unreconstructed Au(111) when the potential was held at 0.8 V for ca. 60 min. The coverage of CO adlayer decreased accordingly from 0.28 to 0.13 before it was completely removed from the Au(111) surface at more positive potentials.

Vibrational properties of CO have been studied on Pt(111) in acid and alkaline electrolytes by synchronous measurements of CO oxidation current (0.5 mV/s) and IRAS spectra (one spectrum for every 1 mV). We found that in acid solutions the frequency-tuning rate (dnu(CO)/dE) as well as the potential-dependent bandwidth (dDeltanu1/2/dE) deviates from expected linear relationships. This unusual potential-dependent behavior is interpreted in terms of compression/dissipation of CO islands during the CO oxidation, engendered by competitive adsorption between inactive anions from a supporting electrolyte and the reactive OH species.

Pre-adsorbed and bulk (continuous) CO oxidation on a polycrystalline Pt electrode were examined in a wall-jet electrochemical quartz crystal nanobalance (EQCN) setup, using both differential and integral evaluation of the EQCN data, to get further insights into the kinetics and mechanism of this important fuel-cell related electrocatalytic reaction. The hydrogen underpotential adsorption–desorption features in the base cyclic voltammogram of a Pt film are accompanied by significant changes in the electrode mass due H-upd induced desorption–adsorption of anion. In the double-layer region small capacitive currents are accompanied by comparatively large reversible mass changes indicating anion adsorption/desorption (96.5 g mol−1 assigned to bisulfate). OH and oxygen electrosorption from water at potentials more positive of 1.0 V result in relatively small variations in the electrode mass (16 g mol−1 for PtOH and ca. 9 g mol−1 for PtO formation, respectively). The CO-adlayer stripping first leads to the electrode mass decrease in the “pre-peak” region, followed by a fast mass increase within the main stripping peak due to re-adsorption of bisulfate anion (91 g mol−1). A mass-transport limited current for bulk CO oxidation under continuous flow of CO-saturated electrolyte leads to negligible mass changes (0–1 g mol−1) in the PtO region, suggesting that bulk CO oxidation is mediated by electroformed PtO.

Methanol (MeOH) oxidation reaction (MOR) at Pt electrodes under potentiostatic conditions has been investigated by electrochemical in situ FTIR spectroscopy (FTIRS) in attenuated-total-reflection configuration under controlled flow conditions in 0.1 M HClO(4) with 2 M MeOH, where the mass transport effects are largely eliminated using a flow cell. Our results reveal that (i) at constant potentials, the methanol dehydrogenation rate decreases while the CO(ad) oxidation rate increases with the accumulation of CO(ad) until the maximum CO(ad) coverage (ca. 0.5 ML i.e., the steady state) is reached; (ii) at fixed CO(ad) coverage, the rates for MeOH decomposition to CO(ad) and CO(ad) oxidation increases with potential from 0.3 to 0.7 V (vs. RHE), with Tafel slopes for MeOH dehydrogenation of ca. 440 ± 30 mV/dec, which is independent of CO(ad) coverage; (iii) the current efficiency of the CO pathway in MOR at 0.6 and 0.7 V is below 20% and it decreases toward higher potentials. The mechanisms as well as the potential induced change in the kinetics of different pathways involved in MOR are briefly discussed.

Aiming at a better understanding of correlations between the activity and selectivity of Au electrodes in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) under controlled transport conditions, we have investigated this reaction by combined electrochemical and in situ FTIR measurements, performed in a flow cell set-up in an attenuated total reflection (ATR) configuration in acid and alkaline electrolytes. The formation of incomplete reduction products (hydrogen peroxyde/peroxyls) was detected by a collector electrode, the onset of OHad formation was probed by bulk CO oxidation. Using an electroless-deposited, annealed Au film on a Si prism as working electrode and three different electrolytes for comparison (sulfuric acid, perchloric acid, sodium hydroxide solution), we could derive detailed information on the anion adsorption behavior, and could correlate this with the ORR characteristics. The data reveal pronounced effects of the anions and the pH on the ORR characteristics, indicated e. g., by a grossly different activity and selectivity for the 4-electron pathway to water/hydroxyls, with the onset ranging from ca. 1.0 V in alkaline electrolyte to 0.6 V in sulfuric acid electrolyte, and the selectivity for the 4-electron pathway ranging from 100 % (alkaline electrolyte, low overpotentials) to 40 % (acidic electrolytes, alkaline electrolyte at high overpotentials). In contrast, the effect of the ORR on the anion adsorption characteristics is small. Anion effects as well as correlations between anion adsorption and ORR are discussed.

Nitrogen is often used as an inert background atmosphere in solid state studies of electrode and reaction kinetics, of solid state studies of transport phenomena, and in applications e.g. solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), sensors and membranes. Thus, chemical and electrochemical reactions of oxides related to or with dinitrogen are not supposed and in general not considered. We demonstrate by a steady state electrochemical polarisation experiments complemented with in situ photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) that at a temperature of 450 °C dinitrogen can be electrochemically activated at the three phase boundary between N(2), a metal microelectrode and one of the most widely used solid oxide electrolytes--yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ)--at potentials more negative than E = -1.25 V. The process is neither related to a reduction of the electrolyte nor to an adsorption process or a purely chemical reaction but is electrochemical in nature. Only at potentials more negative than E = -2 V did new components of Zr 3d and Y 3d signals with a lower formal charge appear, thus indicating electrochemical reduction of the electrolyte matrix. Theoretical model calculations suggest the presence of anionic intermediates with delocalized electrons at the electrode/electrolyte reaction interface. The ex situ SIMS analysis confirmed that nitrogen is incorporated and migrates into the electrolyte beneath the electrode.

Two new reductive electrochemical (CO2 + H2O + 2e-; HCO2H + 2e-) and two new chemical methods (Al(CH3)3 + proton donor; NaO2CH) to prepare the title compound from Pd2(dppm)2Cl2 are reported. For the latter method, an intermediate species formulated as Pd2(dppm)4(O2CH)2(2+) is identified spectroscopically (1H NMR, 31P NMR, IR, and FAB-MS). Limited stability of the title compound in the presence of Cl- and Br- as counteranions is noticed and is due to sensitivity of the cluster toward nucleophilic attack of the halide ions. This result is corroborated by the rapid decomposition of these clusters in the presence of CN- to form the binuclear species Pd2(dppm)2(CN)4 and by the preparation of the stable salts [Pd4(dppm)4(H)2](X)2(X- = BF4-, PF6-, BPh4-). Upon a two-electron electrochemical reduction of this cluster to the neutral species (E1/2 = -1.42 V vs SCE in DMF) in the presence of 1 equiv of HCO2H, a highly reactive species formulated as [Pd4(dppm)4(H)3]+ is generated and characterized by 1H NMR, 31P NMR, and cyclic voltammetry. Subsequent addition of H+ (via RCO2H; R = H, CH3, CF3, C6H5) under the same reducing conditions, induces the homogeneous catalysis of H2 evolution. The turnover number is found to be 134 in 2 h, with no evidence for catalyst decomposition. This same species also exhibits a one-electron oxidation process (E1/2 = -0.61 V vs SCE in DMF) that induces the catalytical decomposition of formate (HCO2- --> CO2 + 1/2H2 + 1e-). This double catalysis from the same cluster intermediate is unprecedented.

A special in situ PEM fuel cell has been developed to allow X-ray absorption measurements during real fuel cell operation. Variations in both the coverage of O[H] (O[H] indicates O and/or OH) and CO (applying a novel Deltamu(L3) = mu(L3)(V) - mu(L3)(ref) difference technique), as well as in the geometric (EXAFS) and electronic (atomic XAFS) structure of the anode catalyst, are monitored as a function of the current. In hydrogen, the N(Pt)(-)(Ru) coordination number increases much slower than the N(Pt)(-)(Pt) with increasing current, indicating a more reluctant reduction of the surface Pt atoms near the hydrous Ru oxide islands. In methanol, both O[H] and CO adsorption are separately visible with the Deltamu technique and reveal a drop in CO and an increase in OH coverage in the range of 65-90 mA/cm(2). With increasing OH coverage, the Pt-O coordination number and the AXAFS intensity increase. The data allow the direct observation of the preignition and ignition regions for OH formation and CO oxidation, during the methanol fuel cell operation. It can be concluded that both a bifunctional mechanism and an electronic ligand effect are active in CO oxidation from a PtRu surface in a PEM fuel cell.
