We characterize all simple unitarizable representations of the braid group on complex vector spaces of dimension . In particular, we prove that if and denote the two generating twists of , then a simple representation (for ) is unitarizable if and only if the eigenvalues of are distinct, satisfy and 0$"> for , where the are functions of the eigenvalues, explicitly described in this paper.

A commutative Banach algebra is said to have the property if the following holds: Let be a closed subspace of finite codimension such that, for every , the Gelfand transform has at least distinct zeros in , the maximal ideal space of . Then there exists a subset of of cardinality such that vanishes on , the set of common zeros of . In this paper we show that if is compact and nowhere dense, then , the uniform closure of the space of rational functions with poles off , has the property for all . We also investigate the property for the algebra of real continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space.

Let be a holomorphically separable irreducible reduced complex space, a connected compact Lie group acting on by holomorphic transformations, a Weyl involution, and an antiholomorphic map satisfying and for . We show that if is a multiplicity free -module, then maps every -orbit onto itself. For a spherical affine homogeneous space of the reductive group we construct an antiholomorphic map with these properties.

Suppose is a complex Hilbert space and is a bounded operator. For each closed set let denote the corresponding spectral manifold. Let denote the set of all points with the property that for any open neighborhood of In this paper we show that if is dominating in some bounded open set, then has a nontrivial invariant subspace. As a corollary, every Hilbert space operator which is a quasiaffine transform of a subdecomposable operator with large spectrum has a nontrivial invariant subspace.

It is known that, given a Banach space , the modulus of convexity associated to this space is a non-negative function, non-decreasing, bounded above by the modulus of convexity of any Hilbert space and satisfies the equation for every , where is a constant. We show that, given a function satisfying these properties then, there exists a Banach space in such a way its modulus of convexity is equivalent to , in Figiel's sense. Moreover this Banach space can be taken to be two-dimensional.

Rankin and Swinnerton-Dyer (1970) prove that all zeros of the Eisenstein series in the standard fundamental domain for lie on . In this paper we generalize their theorem, providing conditions under which the zeros of other modular forms lie only on the arc . Using this result we prove a speculation of Ono, namely that the zeros of the unique ``gap function" in , the modular form with the maximal number of consecutive zero coefficients in its -expansion following the constant , has zeros only on . In addition, we show that the -invariant maps these zeros to totally real algebraic integers of degree bounded by a simple function of weight .

We show Schwarz type inequalities and consider their converses. A continuous function is said to be semi-operator monotone on if is operator monotone on . We show that even for subsets of the real line that do not contain perfect sets, the Hurewicz property does not imply the property , asserting that for each countable family of open -covers of , there is a choice function whose image is a -cover of . This settles a problem of Just, Miller, Scheepers, and Szeptycki. Our main result also answers a question of Bartoszyński and the second author, and implies that for , the conjunction of Sakai's strong countable fan tightness and the Reznichenko property does not imply Arhangelskiı's property .

A new construction of semi-free actions on Menger manifolds is presented. As an application we prove a theorem about simultaneous coexistence of countably many semi-free actions of compact metric zero-dimensional groups with the prescribed fixed-point sets: Let be a compact metric zero-dimensional group, represented as the direct product of subgroups , a -manifold and (resp., ) its pseudo-interior (resp., pseudo-boundary). Then, given closed subsets of , there exists a -action on such that (1) and are invariant subsets of ; and (2) each is the fixed point set of any element .
