 Alternative titles of this paper would have been ``Index theory without index' or ``The Baum–Connes conjecture without Baum.' In 1989, Rieffel introduced an analytic version of deformation quantization based on the use of continuous fields of C * -algebras. We review how a wide variety of examples of such quantizations can be understood on the basis of a single lemma involving amenable groupoids. These include Weyl–Moyal quantization on manifolds, C * -algebras of Lie groups and Lie groupoids, and the E-theoretic version of the Baum–Connes conjecture for smooth groupoids as described by Connes in his book Noncommutative Geometry. Concerning the latter, we use a different semidirect product construction from Connes. This enables one to formulate the Baum–Connes conjecture in terms of twisted Weyl–Moyal quantization. The underlying mechanical system is a noncommutative desingularization of a stratified Poisson space, and the Baum–Connes Conjecture actually suggests a strategy for quantizing such singular spaces. The zeta and eta functions of a differential operator of Dirac-type on a compact n-dimensional manifold, provided with a well-posed pseudodifferential boundary condition, have been shown in [G99] to be meromorphic on ℂ with simple or double poles on the real axis. Extending results from [G99] we show how perturbations of the boundary condition of order −J affect the poles; in particular they preserve a possible regularity of zeta at 0 and a possible simple pole of eta at 0 when Jn. After a short presentation of the difference in motivation between the Berezin and deformation quantization approaches, we start with a reminder of Berezin’s view of quantization as a functor followed by a brief overview of deformation quantization in contrast with the latter. The rigorous equivalence of the Schrödinger and Heisenberg pictures requires that one uses Born–Jordan quantization in place of Weyl quantization. We confirm this by showing that the much discussed “ angular momentum dilemma” disappears if one uses Born–Jordan quantization. We argue that the latter is the only physically correct quantization procedure. We also briefly discuss a possible redefinition of phase space quantum mechanics, where the usual Wigner distribution has to be replaced with a new quasi-distribution associated with Born–Jordan quantization, and which has proven to be successful in time-frequency analysis.  相似文献

An elementary gauge-non-invariant model and the bosonized form of the chiral Schwinger model are introduced as classical theories. The constraint structure is then investigated. It is shown that by introducing a new field, these models can be made gauge-invariant. The BRST form of quantization is reviewed and applied to each of these models in turn such that gauge-invariance is not broken. Some consequences of this form of quantization are discussed.  相似文献

It is well known that one can often construct an invariant star-product by expanding the product of two Toeplitz operators asymptotically into a series of another Toeplitz operators multiplied by increasing powers of the Planck constant h. This is the Berezin–Toeplitzquantization. We show that on bounded symmetric domains (Hermitian symmetric spaces of noncompact type), one can in fact obtain in a similar way any invariant star-productwhich is G-equivalent to the Berezin–Toeplitz star-product, by using, instead of Toeplitz operators, other suitable assignments fQ f from compactly supported C functions f to bounded linear operators Q f on the corresponding Hilbert spaces. (This procedureis referred to as prime quantization by some authors.) Along the way, we establish two technical results which are of interest in their own right, namely a controlled-growth parameter generalization of the classical theorem of Borel on the existence of a function with prescribed derivatives of all orders at a point, and the fact that any invariant bi-differential operator (Hochschild two-cochain) on a bounded symmetric domain automatically maps the Schwartz space into itself.  相似文献

Recently, research on left-handed materials (LHMs) has attracted considerable attentions. The LHMs are a kind of man-made metameterials which have negative permittivity and negative permeability. These metameterials have many novel properties such as inverse light pressure, and reverse Doppler effect, which lead to many potential applications of LHMs such as superlenses which, in principle, can achieve arbitrary subwavelength resolution. However, though the properties mentioned above are seen to be classical, the quantum phenomena in LHMs have also attracted attentions such as the modified spontaneous emission of atoms in LHME.  相似文献

Let M be a compact Kähler manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group G. In this paper, we study the geometric quantization of the symplectic quotient M // G. Guillemin and Sternberg [Invent. Math. 67, 515–538 (1982)] have shown, under suitable regularity assumptions, that there is a natural invertible map between the quantum Hilbert space over M //G and the G-invariant subspace of the quantum Hilbert space over M.Reproducing other recent results in the literature, we prove that in general the natural map of Guillemin and Sternberg is not unitary, even to leading order in Planck’s constant. We then modify the quantization procedure by the “metaplectic correction” and show that in this setting there is still a natural invertible map between the Hilbert space over M // G and the G-invariant subspace of the Hilbert space over M. We then prove that this modified Guillemin–Sternberg map is asymptotically unitary to leading order in Planck’s constant. The analysis also shows a good asymptotic relationship between Toeplitz operators on M and on M // G.  相似文献

We consider the autowave mechanism of evolution of a localized plastic deformation of crystalline solids of different origins. It is found that localization of the plastic flow is determined by the relation between elastic and plastic phenomena in deforming materials. It is shown that the main parameter of deformation processes is the elastic–plastic deformation invariant, viz., a dimensionless quantity connecting quantitatively the parameters of elastic waves and self-sustained waves (autowaves) of localized plastic deformation. The correctness of this statement is verified for metals, alkali-halide crystals, and rocks. The physical origin of the invariant is explained on the basis of thermodynamic considerations.  相似文献

A numerical approach to Ginzburg–Landau (GL) theory is demonstrated and we review its applications to several examples of current interest in the research on superconductivity. This analysis also shows the applicability of the two-dimensional approach to thin superconductors and the re-defined effective GL parameter κκ. For two-gap superconductors, the conveniently written GL equations directly show that the magnetic behavior of the sample depends not just on the GL parameter of two bands, but also on the ratio of respective coherence lengths.  相似文献

The deformation and fracture of graphene sheets containing 555–777 defects have been investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. Each such defect is a divacancy forming a localized configuration of three pentagonal and three septangular cells of carbon atoms in a hexagonal graphene lattice. An emphasis is made on the influence of 555–777 defects in graphene on its mechanical characteristics (stress–strain curve, uniaxial tensile strength, and maximum elastic strain).  相似文献
