Three types of high-density polyethylene(HDPE)with different molecular weights(high, medium and low)were adopted to evaluate the influence of matrix molecular weight on the structure-property relation of injection-molded HDPE/mica composites through a combination of SEM,2d-WAXS,DSC,DMA and tensile testing.Various structural factors including orientation, filler dispersion, interfacial interaction between HDPE and mica, etc.,which can impact the macroscopic mechanics, were compared in detail among the three HDPE/mica composites. The transcrystallization of HDPE on the mica surface was observed and it exhibited strong matrix molecular weight dependence.Obvious transcrystalline structure was found in the composite with low molecular weight HDPE,whereas it was hard to be detected in the composites with increased HDPE molecular weight. The best reinforcement effect in the composite with low molecular weight HDPE can be understood as mainly due to substantially improved interfacial adhesion between matrix and mica filler, which arises from the transcrystallization mechanism.

Interfacial interaction plays a key role in the preparation of high performance polymer composites. In this work, in order to explore the possibility to enhance the interfacial interaction via interfacial crystallization of polymer matrix onto the filler surface, interfacial crystallization structure and mechanical properties of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/whisker composites were investigated. The composites were firstly prepared by melt compounding, followed by processing in both traditional and dynamic injection molding. DSC, WAXD, SEM were used to characterize the interfacial crystallization structure. And the mechanical properties were measured by tensile testing. An imperfect shish‐calabash structure, with whisker served as shish, and irregular LLDPE spherulite as imperfect calabash, was formed during common injection molding processing. Such a structure was considered as the main reason for the strong interfacial adhesion and the obviously improved tensile strength and modulus. Furthermore, introducing shear could cause the formation of relatively perfect shish‐calabash structure, leading to the stronger interfacial adhesion.

In this study, good dispersion status of graphite in a nonpolar, intractable polymer, i.e. polypropylene (PP), was realized in melt processing by using a specific dynamic packing injection molding (DPIM) technique. The exfoliation extent of graphite increased remarkably from the skin zone to the core zone of the molded part, as confirmed by combination of WAXD, SEM and TEM analyses, indicating an accelerated exfoliation occurred during the DPIM processing. This phenomenon is due to decreased melt flow channel and increased melt viscosity as the solidification takes place from the wall into the center, which leads to greatly increased shear force. The good dispersion of graphite results in obvious reinforcements of both tensile strength and impact strength by adding moderate amount of graphite. The present study proposes a promising route for realizing the large-scale fabrication of structural parts of polymer/exfoliated-graphite nanocomposites with excellent mechanical properties.

Mechanical properties of carbon fiber (CF) and carbon nanotube (CNT)‐filled thermoplastic high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) composites were studied with particular interest on the effects of filler content and fiber surface treatment by coupling agent. Surface‐treated CF‐filled HDPE composites increased their tensile strength and impact strength, which is further increased with the addition of CNT. SEM showed that CNT‐coating‐treated CF‐HDPE composites show better dispersion of the filler into the matrix, which results in better interfacial adhesion between the filler and the matrix.

The effect of filler types of mica and talc on the oscillatory shear rheological properties, mechanical performance, and morphology of the chemically coupled polypropylene composites is studied in this work. The Maleic Anhydride grafted Polypropylene (MAPP) was used as an adhesion promoter for coupling mineral particles with the polypropylene matrix. The samples were prepared by a co‐rotating, L/D = 40, 25 mm twin screw extruder. The tensile tests carried out on the injection molded samples showed a reinforcing effect of talc up to 20 wt% on the Polypropylene (PP). The tensile strength of PP‐mica composites showed a slight decrease at all percentages of mica. The effect of chemical coupling by using MAPP on the tensile strength was more pronounced in increasing the tensile strength for PP‐mica than PP‐talc composites. The complex viscosity curve of pure PP and the composites, showed a Newtonian plateau (η0) up to 30 wt% at low frequency terminal zone. By increasing the filler content to 40 and 50 wt%, the complex viscosity at very low shear rates sharply increased and showed yield behavior that can be due to the formation of filler particles networks in the melt. At the optimum amount of coupling agent, a minimum in cross over frequency curve against MAPP content is observed. The optimum amount of coupling agent for PP‐talc composites is about 1.5%, and about 3% for PP‐mica formulations. The analysis of viscosity behavior at power‐law high region, revealed the more shear thinning effect of mica than talc on the PP matrix resin. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In order to promote better understanding of the structure‐mechanical properties relationships of filled thermoplastic compounds, the molecular orientation and the degree of crystallinity of injection molded talc‐filled isotactic polypropylene (PP) composites were investigated by X‐ray pole figures and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). The usual orientation of the filler particles, where the plate planes of talc particles are oriented parallel to the surface of injection molding and influence the orientation of the α‐PP crystallites was observed. The PP crystallites show bimodal orientation in which the c‐ and a*‐axes are mixed oriented to the longitudinal direction (LD) and the b‐axis is oriented to the normal direction (ND). It was found that the preferential b‐axis orientation of PP crystallites increases significantly in the presence of talc particles up to 20 wt% in the composites and then levels‐off at higher filler content. WAXD measurements of the degree of crystallinity through the thickness of injection molded PP/talc composites indicated an increasing gradient of PP matrix crystallinity content from the core to the skin layers of the molded plaques. Also, the bulk PP crystallinity content of the composites, as determined by DSC measurements, increased with talc filler concentration. The bulk crystallinity content of PP matrix and the orientation behavior of the matrix PP crystallites and that of the talc particles in composites are influenced by the presence of the filler content and these three composite's microstructure modification factors influence significantly the flexural moduli and the mechanical stiffness anisotropy data (ELD/ETD) of the analyzed PP/talc composites. It is feasible to control the phase morphology and phase inversion for immiscible polymer blends to manipulate their properties. In this work, the blend of high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/polyoxymethylene (POM) was used as an example, to demonstrate the effect of shear on the phase morphology and resultant mechanical properties in immiscible polymer blends. To do so, a well defined “in-process morphology control” process during injection molding was conducted. That was: after making the blends via melt mixing, the injection-molded bars were prepared via a so-called dynamic packing injection molding equipment to impose a prolonged shearing on the melts during the solidification stage. Phase morphologies and crystal structures of the blends were estimated mainly through scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and 2D wide-angle X-ray scattering, respectively. For in-process morphology controlled samples, co-continuous structures, especially subinclusions inside another continuous phase induced by shear, were observed when the HDPE content was between 30 wt% and 50 wt%, leading to much early occurrence of phase inversion and also the lowest degree of orientation for both HDPE and POM. However, for samples obtained via conventional injection molding, a droplet morphology was always observed with HDPE dispersed in POM as the content of HDPE was up to 30 wt%, but with POM dispersed in HDPE as the content of HDPE was 50 wt%. The performances of injection-molded bars were mainly respect to the phase morphologies for samples obtained via conventional injection molding in which tensile properties continuously decreased with increasing of HDPE content up to 30 wt% and then increased with further increasing of HDPE content. For the in-process morphology controlled samples, the tensile properties depended not only on the phase morphology, but more importantly on the degree of orientation. One observed only a slight decrease of tensile property as the content of HDPE was less than 15 wt%, while an abrupt decrease when the content of HDPE was between 30 wt% and 50 wt%, probably due to the lowest degree of orientation in this composition range.

The relationship among the processing parameters, crystalline morphology, and macroscopic properties in injected molded bar becomes very complicated due to existence of temperature gradient and shear gradient along the sample thickness. To enhance the shear strength, gas-assisted injection molding (GAIM) was utilized in producing the molded bars. The aim of our research was to explore the relationship between processing conditions and the spatial variation of the hierarchy structure as well as the mechanical properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) obtained via GAIM. In our previous work [Wang L, Yang B, Yang W et al (2011) Colloid Polym Sci 289:1661–1671], we found that the enhancement of the gas pressure can remarkably increase the degree of molecular orientation in the HDPE samples, which turns out to improve the mechanical performances of GAIM parts. In this work, the hierarchy structure, orientation behavior, and mechanical properties of molder bars under different gas delay time were investigated using a variety of characterization techniques including rheological experiments, scanning electron microscope, tensile testing, differential scanning calorimetry, and two-dimensional wide-angle X-ray scattering. Moreover, the temperature field during the short shot stage of GAIM process was simulated using an enthalpy transformation approach. Our results indicate that these properties were intimately related to each other, and with prolonged gas delay time, GAIM samples with higher degree of orientation and improved mechanical properties were obtained.

The correlation between Young's modulus of mica-filled high density polyethylene (HDPE), low density polyethylene(LDPE) and the state of dispersion of plasma-treated mica in the polymer matrices was studied. The modulus and the number average diameter of mica aggregates in matrix were determined with tensile testing and image analysis respectively. The interface structure of the filler/matrix and the bulk structure of matrix were examined through the dielectric spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic viscoelastic spectrometry. The results show that the Young's modulus of the filial polyethylene depends to a great extent upon the state of dispersion of filler in matrix, but it is independent of the interface structure and bulk structure. The better the dispersion, the higher the Young's modulus.

The relationship among the processing parameters, crystalline morphologies and mechanical properties of injected‐molded bar becomes much complicated primarily due to the existence of temperature gradient coupled with the shear gradient along the sample thickness. The effect of thermal gradient field on the microstructural evolution, hierarchical structures and dynamic mechanical properties of high‐density polyethylene parts molded via gas‐assisted injection molding (GAIM) were investigated using scanning electron microscope, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis and two‐dimensional wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. The three‐dimensional temperature profiles during the cooling stage under different melt temperatures of GAIM process were obtained by using a transient heat transfer model of the enthalpy transformation approach, and the phase‐change plateaus were clearly observed in the cooling curves. It was found that a variety of melt temperatures could induce considerable variations of the hierarchical structures, orientation behavior and dynamic mechanical properties of the injection‐molded bars. With reduced melt temperature, GAIM samples with higher molecular orientation and improved dynamic mechanical properties were obtained. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of acid‐treated wood fiber modifications on the mechanical behaviors of HDPE/ABS blend is investigated. Wood fiber/HDPE/ABS composites were fabricated by incorporating acid‐treated wood fiber into HDPE/ABS blends. The results showed that both the tensile strength and flexural strength of wood fiber/HDPE/ABS composites were greater than those of HDPE/ABS blend, regardless of wood fiber modification. The results also showed that the impact strength of HDPE/ABS composites is improved by the addition of wood fiber. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) examination of fractured surfaces showed that the improvement in the mechanical properties of the wood fiber/HDPE/ABS composites was attributed to the improved dispersion of wood fiber in the HDPE/ABS and the better interfacial characteristics caused by the acid treatment of the wood fiber.

The structure and mechanical properties of injection‐molded bars of high‐density polyethylene (HDPE)/PA6 blends were studied in this article. The experimental results showed that the morphologies of injection‐molded bars change gradually along the flow direction, which is tightly related to the melt viscosity and processing conditions. The higher melt viscosity, lower mold temperature, and shorter packing time, restricting the macromolecular relaxation, enhance the difference in morphologies and properties at near and far parts of a mold. An injection‐molded bar (namely H2C5), consisting of 75 wt % of HDPE, 20 wt % of PA6, and 5 wt % of compatibilizer (HDPE‐g‐MAH), showed a greater difference in mechanical properties at near and far parts because of its higher melt viscosity. A clear interface between the skin and core layers of near part in it leads to a much higher impact strength than that of far part. And tensile tests show that its tensile strength of near part is higher than that of far part due to the higher orientation degrees of HDPE matrix and PA6 dispersed phase in near part. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The hierarchical structure and interfacial morphology of injection-molded bars of polypropylene (PP) based blends and composites have been investigated in detail from the skin to the core. For preparation of injection-molded bars with high-level orientation and good interfacial adhesion, a dynamic packing injection molding technology was applied to exert oscillatory shear on the melts during solidification stage. Depending on incorporated component, interfacial adhesion and processing conditions, various oriented structure and morphology could be obtained. First, we will elucidate the epitaxial behavior between PP and high-density polyethylene occurring in practical molded processing. Then, the shear-induced transcrystalline structure will be the main focus for PP/fiber composites. At last, various oriented clay structures have been ascertained unambiguously in PP/organoclay nanocomposites along the thickness of molded bars.

As a long-term project aimed at developing super polyolefin blends, in this paper we summarize our work on themechanical reinforcement and phase morphology of polyolefin blends achieved by dynamic packing injection molding(DPIM). The main feature of this technology is that the specimen is forced to move repeatedly in the model by two pistonsthat move reversibly with the same frequency during cooling, which results in preferential orientation of the dispersed phaseas well as the matrix. The typical morphology of samples obtained via DPIM is a shear-induced morphology with a core inthe center, an oriented zone surrounding the core and a skin layer in the cross-section areas. Shear-induced phase dissolutionat a higher shear rate but phase separation at low shear rates is evident from AFM examination of LLDPE/PP (50/50) blends. The super polyolefin blends having high modulus (1.9-2.2 GPa), high tensile strength (100-120 MPa) and high impactstrength (6 times as that of pure HDPE) have been prepared by controlling the phase separation, molecular orientation andcrystal morphology.

In our previous work, a hybrid shish kebab structure, with polyethylene (PE) crystal lamellae periodically decorated on the surface of an inorganic whisker (SMCW) and aligned approximately perpendicular to the long axis of the whisker, has been observed in the injection molded bar of PE/SMCW composites. To investigate the effect of the molecular weight of the PE matrix on the formation of the hybrid shish kebab structure and the corresponding physical properties of HDPE/SMCW composites, in this work, three types of PE with different molecular weights were used to prepare the composites. They were first melt blended and then subjected to dynamic packing injection molding (DPIM), in which the prolonged shear was exerted on the melt during the solidification stage. An obvious hybrid shish kebab (HSK) structure, with PE crystal lamellae closely packed on the surface of the SMCW, was found in the samples with a low molecular weight PE (LMW-PE) matrix and a medium molecular weight PE (MMW-PE) matrix. However, in samples with a high molecular weight PE (HMW-PE) matrix, an incomplete HSK structure with PE crystal lamellae loosely decorated on the surface of the SMCW was observed. Furthermore, DSC results indicated that SMCW served as a good nucleating agent only for the composite with a LMW-PE matrix and the nucleation efficiency decreased with increasing PE molecular weight. Correspondingly, the tensile strength of the PE/SMCW composites was significantly improved by adding SMCW for the samples with a LMW-PE or MMW-PE matrix. Especially for samples with a LMW-PE matrix, the tensile strength was remarkably enhanced by the presence of only 1 wt % SMCW. For the composites with a HMW-PE matrix, the addition of SMCW had almost no reinforcing effect on the composites. The molecular weight dependence of the formation of HSK and property enhancement was discussed on the basis of the chain mobility and crystallization capability of the PE matrix.
