1. Introduction

The study of accelerator-driven subcritical nuclear reactor has attracted the attention of nuclear physicists and engineers in the world. The main aim of the facility to be built is to generate electricity, dispose long-life radioactive wastes and find a way not to produce or produce much less radioactive wastes. One of the key components of this type of new facility is a particle accelerator, from which high energy particles, most possibly protons, impinge on a target in which high intensity of secondary neutrons are produced. These neutrons then initiate operation of a subcritical nuclear reactor. In the central part of the core of the reactor is the target. The optimization of neutron parameters in the target and the surrounding moderating materials is very important for successful operation of the reactor. This work aims to determine neutron yield, spatial distribution and energy characteristics in the target region of the accelerator. This paper reports the new results obtained by proton bombardments on U/Pb, Pb and Hg targets.

2. Experiments

The experiments were carried out at the Synchrophasotron accelerator in the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna, Russia. The beams of protons with 0.533 or 1.0 GeV from the accelerator impinge on a target U/Pb, Pb or Hg. The size of the Pb target was 8 cm in diameter and 20 cm in length (thickness). The U/Pb target was composed of a U column in the central part and a Pb sleeve (cylinder) on the column. The size of the U column was 3.6 cm in diameter and 20 cm in length. The outer diameter of the sleeve was 8 cm and the length was 20 cm. The inner diameter of the sleeve was just in contact with the outer surface of the U column. The size of Hg target was the same as the Pb target. Outside the U/Pb, Pb, or Hg target there was a cylindrical paraffin moderator with a thickness of 6 cm and length of 31 cm. Intensive secondary neutrons were produced in the U/Pb, Pb or Hg target on irradiation with protons. The neutrons were recorded with CR-39 detector strips of 20 cm in length and 1 cm in width, which were placed in the gap between the target U/Pb, Pb, or Hg and the paraffin moderator (here, we call inner CR-39 detector) as well as on the outer surface of the paraffin moderator (we call outer CR-39 detector). The length of the CR-39 strips was the same as the targets and the starting point (X=0) of the CR-39 detector was just the starting point of the targets at the upper stream end for the incident beams. The ending point (X=20 cm) of the CR-39 detectors was just the ending point of the targets at downstream for the beam. The secondary neutrons from the targets produce recoil nuclei C, O and H and other charged reaction products in the CR-39 detectors whose composition is [C12H18O7]n. The recoil nuclei and other products create tracks in the CR-39. The numbers of 0.533 GeV protons impinged on Pb and U/Pb targets were 1.52×1013 and 1.502×1013, respectively. The numbers of 1.0 GeV protons impinged on Pb, U/Pb and Hg targets were 1.91×1013, 2.03×1013 and 2.236×1013, respectively. After irradiation with secondary neutrons in each run of the experiments, the CR-39 detectors were etched in 6.5 N NaOH solution at 70°C for 45 min to develop the tracks in the detectors. The tracks at certain positions (X=0,5,10,15 and 20 cm) in each CR-39 detector were counted with track image analyzer.

3.1. Neutron yield of Hg target

The areal track densities (ρT) were measured at different positions (X) along the CR-39 detectors on the surfaces of the U/Pb and Hg targets and the moderator for 1.0 GeV p bombardments. Track yield (Y) from a single proton is defined to be the ratio of ρT to the number of the incident protons. The track yields in the outer CR-39 detectors are shown in Fig. 1. The track yield ratio R of U/Pb to Hg targets from the above outer CR-39 detectors are shown in Fig. 2. The average value of the ratios at different places (X) is 2.00±0.11. Similar measurements with inner CR-39 detectors on the surfaces of U/Pb and Hg targets were also carried out. The track yield ratio from the inner CR-39 is 2.11±0.33, which is in agreement with the value of the outer CR-39. The final result of the track yield ratio of U/Pb to Hg target is 2.01±0.10. If we suppose that the energy spectra of neutrons from different targets and different energies of protons at different detector positions are similar and their differences would not produce a great influence on track formation in CR-39 detectors, then the track densities in the CR-39 detectors are proportional to the fluences of the secondary neutrons at the place. The track yield is approximately proportional to the neutron yield in the corresponding place. This supposition is approximately true for 44 and 18 GeV 12C+Cu interactions (Bisplinghoff et al., 1995) and further evidence is shown in this paper in the following paragraph 3.3. From Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 we can see that the neutron yield in Hg target is less than in U/Pb target. Only about half of secondary neutrons are produced in Hg target compared with U/Pb target. Similar measurements were also performed with outer CR-39 detectors for Pb and Hg targets. The track yield ratio of Pb to Hg target is 1.76±0.33 at 1.0 GeV of protons. It means that Hg target produces lesser neutrons than even a Pb target. Hg target is less preferable in order to be used as a target in the reactor from the point of view to get more secondary neutrons.  相似文献

Experimental results obtained by determining the double-differential cross sections for neutron production in Pb, W, Zr, Cu, and Al targets irradiated with 0.8-, 1.0-, and 1.6-GeV protons are presented. The spectra of neutrons were measured at 15°, 30°, 60°, 90°, 120°, and 150° with a time-of-flight spectrometer by using a proton beam extracted from the 10-GeV synchrotron at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP, Moscow). The neutrons are recorded with 5MAB-1F6BC501A/5L liquid scintillation detectors and NE110 solid-state scintillators. The experimental data in question are compared with the results of simulations based on the CEM97, LAHET, and CASCADE codes.  相似文献

Charge-loss and fission cross-sections of238U at 750 A·MeV were measured on Al, Cu and Pb targets. The charge-loss rate was obtained by the attenuation method. Fission was selected by detecting the pair of highly ionizing fragments. Since the neutron-loss cross sections were measured in a parallel experiment for the same projectiles, all cross sections contributing to238U collisions on nuclei are available now as function of the target mass number and can be compared with current models.  相似文献

New experiments on crystal assisted collimation have been carried out at the CERN SPS with stored beams of 120 GeV/c protons and Pb ions. Bent silicon crystals of 2 mm long with about 170 μrad bend angle and a small residual torsion were used as primary collimators. In channeling conditions, the beam loss rate induced by inelastic interactions of particles with the crystal nuclei is minimal. The loss reduction was about 6 for protons and about 3 for Pb ions. Lower reduction value for Pb ions can be explained by their considerably larger ionization losses in the crystal. In one of the crystals, the measured fraction of the Pb ion beam halo deflected in channeling conditions was 74%, a value very close to that for protons. The intensity of the off-momentum halo leaking out from the collimation station was measured in the first high dispersion area downstream. The particle population in the shadow of the secondary collimator-absorber was considerably smaller in channeling conditions than for amorphous orientations of the crystal. The corresponding reduction was in the range of 2-5 for both protons and Pb ions.  相似文献

The emission of energetic neutrons and protons in coincidence with fission fragments was measured for the reactions 238U(16O, nf) and 238U(16O, pf). Larger cross sections were observed for the emission of high-energy protons than for the emission of high-energy neutrons. The differences in spectral shapes and the implications for the coalescence model are discussed.  相似文献

Neutron fluences were measured on LDEF in the low energy (< 1 MeV) and high energy (> 1 MeV) ranges. The low energy detectors used the 6Li(n,)T reaction with Gd foil absorbers to separate thermal (< 0.2 eV) and resonance (0.2 eV−1 MeV) neutron response. High energy detectors contained sets of fission foils (181Ta, 209Bi, 232Th, 238U) with different neutron energy thresholds. The measured neutron fluences together with predicted spectral shapes were used to estimate neutron dose equivalents. The detectors were located in the A0015 and P0006 experiments at the west and Earth sides of LDEF under shielding varying from 1 to 19 g/cm2.

Dose equivalent rates varied from 0.8 to 3.3 μSv/d for the low energy neutrons and from 160 to 390 μSv/d for the high energy neutrons. This compares with TLD measured absorbed dose rates in the range of 1000–3000 μGy/d near these locations and demonstrates that high energy neutrons contribute a significant fraction of the total dose equivalent in LEO.

Comparisons between measurements and calculations were made for high energy neutrons based on fission fragment tracks generated by fission foils at different shielding depths. A simple 1-D slab geometry was used in the calculations. Agreement between measurements and calculations depended on both shielding depth and threshold energy of the fission foils. Differences increased as both shielding and thereshold energy increased. The modeled proton/neutron spectra appeared deficient at high energies. A 3-D model of the experiments is needed to help resolve the differences.  相似文献

The statistical model for fission is used to calculate the isotopic distribution of Rb and Cs in the fission of 238U induced by high-energy protons and reactor neutrons. The double-humped behaviour of the isotope yield curve as observed in high-energy proton-induced fission and the experimentally observed hump on the neutron-rich side in neutron-induced fission are semi-quantitatively reproduced.  相似文献

The isotopic distributions of fragments produced in the spallation of uranium are strongly influenced by the fission of the excited prefragments, highly fissile nuclei. The competition between fission and evaporation around the doubly-magic nucleus Pb is discussed. The light fragments from Fe beam are produced with a strong enhancement of even-even nuclei compared to the odd-odd in the region of nuclei with equal number of neutrons and protons, N ~ Z. This staggering in the production of light fragments is not observed in the production of heavy fragments, and is in contradiction with the basis of the statistical model of deexcitation of a hot nucleus. Pairing interaction as a function of the excitation energy and as a function of the isospin of the nucleus are questioned.  相似文献

We have found a small inclination of the symmetry axis of the prompt fission gamma-quanta angular distribution relative to the “fission axis” in binary fission of 235U induced by cold polarized neutrons using the neutron beam line V13 at Berlin Neutron Scattering Center (BENSC). The sign of the shift depends on the direction of the cold neutron beam polarization and it can only be explained by the quasi-classical rotation of the fissile nucleus at the scission point.  相似文献

The cross sections for the fission of 232Th, 235,238U, 237Np, and 239Pu target nuclei that was induced by 20- to 1000-MeV neutrons and protons were calculated. The respective calculations were based on the multiconfiguration-fission (MCFx) model, which was used to describe three basic stages of the interaction of high-energy nucleons with nuclei: direct processes (intranuclear cascade), equilibration of the emerging compound system, and the decay of the compound nucleus (statistical model). Fission barriers were calculated within the microscopic approach for isotopic chains formed by 15 to 20 nuclei of the required elements. The calculated fission cross sections were compared with available experimental data. It was shown that the input data set and the theoretical model used made it possible to predict satisfactorily cross section for nuclear fission induced by 20- to 1000-MeV nucleons.

Ternary fission induced by cold polarized neutrons was studied for the two isotopes 233U and 235U at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France. In particular two types of angular correlations between the spin of the incoming neutrons and the emission directions of both, the fission fragments (FF) and the ternary particles (TP), were investigated. For FF and TP detectors facing the target at right angles to the neutron beam, first, for longitudinally polarized neutrons a triple correlation between spin and the emission of outgoing particles was explored and, second, for transversally polarized neutrons parity violating asymmetries in the emission of FFs and TPs were analyzed. Nonzero expectation values for the triple correlation were oberserved in the present experiments for the first time.  相似文献

Extended Bonner Spheres spectrometer was used to measure the angular distribution of neutron spectral fluence around NYLON6 phantom irradiated with pencil beam of 100, 150 and 200 MeV protons at the Proton Therapy Center Praha. Measurements were supplemented by a calculation of neutron spectral fluences at different depths of the phantom. The calculation of neutron spectral fluence at different depth of the phantom demonstrated that the majority of high energy neutrons was generated at the beginning of the proton trajectory in the phantom and the neutron yield decreased with increasing depth, with a minimum at the depth corresponding to the Bragg peak. Therefore, attention should be paid not only to the tissue behind the irradiated volume, but also to the preceding tissue. However, the neutron spectral fluence in the vicinity of the treated tissue can only be determined by calculation, mainly due to the dimensions of the neutron spectroscopic instrumentation. This paper presents a suitable technique and experimental conditions to acquire reliable data necessary for the proper determination of neutron spectral fluence. From the measured spectral fluences, the neutron fluence in whole-range and partial energy intervals were determined together with the corresponding ambient dose equivalents at measurement positions. The obtained results indicate that high energy neutrons predominate at the direction of the proton beam and more neutrons are generated by higher energy protons.  相似文献

Induced radioactivity in natural indium (natIn) foils by high energy neutrons was measured at the KENS Facility, KEK, Japan, where a 16.7 cm thick W target was bombarded by protons of 500 MeV. High energy neutrons consequently produced irradiated the In targets placed at different depths inside a 4 m thick concrete shield placed at the beam exit. The measured activities were compared with the results calculated using the nuclear reaction model codes ALICE-91 and EMPIRE-2.18. To estimate the induced activity, excitation functions of the various radionuclides were calculated using the two codes and folded with the appropriate neutron energy distribution at different depths of the concrete shield. The calculated excitation functions of a given nuclide were found to vary widely from one another in some cases. The performances of the codes for different input parameters like level densities and inverse cross-sections are reported in this paper. Our analysis shows that neither of the two codes reproduced all the measured activities satisfactorily, requiring further improvements in the models adopted.  相似文献

The emission probabilities per fission of α-particles, tritons and protons have been measured in fast neutron induced fission of 235U. The measurements were carried out at neutron energies of 120, 180, 230 and 550 keV. AΔE-E semiconductor detector telescope was used to identify different light charged particles and the fission fragments were detected with an ionization chamber. The three-parameter data corresponding to the pulse heights from the ΔE-E detectors and the ion-chamber were recorded event by event on magnetic tape and were analyzed off-line by computer. No significant variation in the most probable energy (E) and the standard deviation (σE) of the energy spectra of different light charged particles with incident neutron energy was observed, although Eα was seen to have a slightly higher value beyond En = 230 keV. The yield of α-particles in fission induced by neutrons of En ~ 200 keV was found to be higher by about 20 % than that in thermal neutron induced fission. The yields of tritons and protons were found to increase significantly with neutron energy.  相似文献

Prompt-fission-neutron multiplicities were measured for 238U(n,f) and 235U(n,f) from 0.4 to 200 MeV. The data are of great importance in connection with accelerator-coupled nuclear reactor systems incinerating actinides. We report that fission induced by 200 MeV neutrons produces approximately 10 more prompt neutrons than fission induced by reactor neutrons. Most neutrons are evaporated from the fission fragments and the prefission compound nucleus, as the preequilibrium emission of energetic neutrons accounts for a maximum of 15% of the prompt neutrons at 200 MeV.  相似文献

The KRIS special library of spectra and emission probabilities in the decays of 1500 nuclei excited up to energies between 150 and 250 MeV was developed for correctly taking into account the decay of highly excited nuclei appearing as fission fragments. The emission of neutrons, protons, and photons was taken into account. Neutron emission fromprimary fragments was found to have a substantial effect on the formation of yields of postneutron nuclei. The library was tested by comparing the calculated and measured yields of products originating from the fission of nuclei that was induced by high-energy protons. The method for calculating these yields was tested on the basis of experimental data on the thermal-neutroninduced fission of 235U nuclei.  相似文献

Differential cross sections for neutrons scattered from natural Pb and 99.9 % isotopically pure 238U have been measured at 0.5°, 1.0°, and 1.5°. A neutron energy continuum was produced by bombarding a thick natural lithium target with a 4 MeV, nanosecond-pulsed proton beam. Neutron energies were determined by time-of-flight techniques. Flight paths from the neutron source to the scatterer and from the scatterer to the detector were each about 5 m. For the 0.5° measurements an annular detector geometry with an angular resolution of ± 0.1° was developed to maximize detection solid angle. Data were averaged over 100 keV intervals from 0.6 to 2.2 MeV and were corrected for backgrounds, multiple scattering and inelastic scattering. Measured cross sections were compared to optical-model calculations which included electromagnetic interactions of neutrons with the nuclear Coulomb field. Inclusion of an induced neutron electric dipole moment interaction was not warranted by the data. The angular dependence of the cross section was fitted with a function A + B cot2case12θ at each energy. Mean values of B for 238U are in agreement with theoretical predictions. Values of B for Pb are apparently 15 % too low.  相似文献

A series of on-line mass separation experiments have been performed at the IRIS facility to measure the yield and release of Rb and Cs neutron-rich isotopes produced by fission reaction of 238U. A 1 GeV proton beam was used to bombard uranium carbide targets with the densities of 11 g/cm3 and 1.5 g/cm3 held at temperatures in the range (2000-2230) °C. The release curves of Rb and Cs long-lived isotopes were measured from both kinds of targets. The overall production efficiency was determined making use of experimentally measured cross-sections of that isotope production. Comparison of the experimental yields of Rb and Cs isotopes with the calculated ones after corrections for losses due to finite release times suggests that the diffusion is the dominating process reducing the efficiency for short-lived isotopes. When normalized to the same thickness, an enhancement for the high-density rod target of the measured isotope yields is observed when going far from stability. This is possibly explained by the reactions induced by secondary neutrons. A significant odd-even effect with higher yields of Cs even neutron isotopes has been observed, confirming a similar effect obtained in earlier experiments.  相似文献

Charge distributions of fragments from low energy nuclear fission are investigated in reactions of highly fissile238U projectiles at relativistic energies (750 A·MeV) with a heavy (Pb) and a light (Be) target. The fully stripped fission fragments are separated by the Fragment Separator (FRS). Their high kinetic energies in the laboratory system allow the identification of all atomic numbers by using Multiple-Sampling Ionization Chambers (MUSIC). The elemental distributions of fragments observed at larger magnetic rigidities than the238U projectiles show asymmetric break-up and odd-even effects. They indicate a low energy fission process, induced mainly by dissociation in the electro-magnetic field for the U/Pb-system, or by peripheral nuclear interactions for the U/Be-system.  相似文献
