By a wavepacket propagation, we demonstrate the possibility of controlling the photodissociation branching ratio between two fragment channels by a single ultrashort linearly chirped laser pulse. It is found that a negatively chirped pulse of a moderate chirp rate completely prohibits the production of one of the photofragment channels. Two characteristics of chirped laser pulses contribute to this remarkable effect: the mechanism of adiabatic rapid passage (ARP) for the population transfer between the ground and excited states and the intrapulse pump‐dump process for determining the branching ratio. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We numerically investigate the post-pulse alignment of rotationally excited diatomic molecules upon nonresonant interaction with a linearly polarized laser pulse. In addition to the simulations, we develop a simple model which qualitatively describes the shape and amplitude of post-pulse alignment induced by a laser pulse of moderate power density. In our treatment we take into account that molecules in rotationally excited states can interact with a laser pulse not only by absorbing energy but also by stimulated emission. The extent to which these processes are present in the interaction depends, on the one hand, on the directionality of the molecular angular momentum (given by the M quantum number), and on the other hand on the ratio of transition frequencies and pulse duration (determined by the J number). A rotational wave packet created by a strong pulse from an initially pure state contains a broad range of rotational levels, over which the character of the interaction can change from non-adiabatic to adiabatic. Depending on the laser pulse duration and amplitude, the transition from the non-adiabatic to the adiabatic limit proceeds through a region with dominant rotational heating, or alignment, for short pulses and a large region with rotational cooling, and correspondingly preferred anti-alignment, for longer pulses.  相似文献

We study wave packet interferometry (WPI) considering the laser pulse fields both classical and quantum mechanically. WPI occurs in a molecule after subjecting it to the interaction with a sequence of phase-locked ultrashort laser pulses. Typically, the measured quantity is the fluorescence of the molecule from an excited electronic state. This signal has imprinted the interference of the vibrational wave packets prepared by the different laser pulses of the sequence. The consideration of the pulses as quantum entities in the analysis allows us to study the entanglement of the laser pulse states with the molecular states. With a simple model for the molecular system, plus several justified approximations, we solve for the fully quantum mechanical molecule-electromagnetic field state. We then study the reduced density matrices of the molecule and the laser pulses separately. We calculate measurable corrections to the case where the fields are treated classically.  相似文献

Excited state population can be manipulated by resonant chirped laser pulses through pump–dump processes. We investigate these processes in the laser dye LD690 as a function of wavelength by monitoring the saturated absorption of chirped ultrafast pulses. The resulting nonlinear absorption spectrum becomes increasingly complex as the pulse is tuned to shorter wavelengths. However, fluorescence measurements indicate that the excited state population depends weakly on chirp when the pump wavelength is far from the lowest order electronic transition. Using a learning algorithm and closed-loop control, we find nonlinear chirp parameters that optimize features in the transmission spectrum. The results are discussed in terms of competition between excited state absorption and stimulated resonant Raman scattering.  相似文献

Femtosecond degenerate four-wave-mixing spectroscopy following an initial pump laser pulse was used to observe the wave packet dynamics in excited electronic states of gas phase iodine. The focus of the investigation was on the ion pair states belonging to the first tier dissociating into the two ions I-(1S) + I+(3P2). By a proper choice of the wavelengths of the initial pump and degenerate four-wave-mixing pulses, we were able to observe the vibrational dynamics of the B (3)Pi(u) (+) state of molecular iodine as well as the ion pair states accessible from there by a one-photon transition. The method proves to be a valuable tool for exploring higher lying states that cannot be directly accessed from the ground state due to selection rule exclusion or unfavorable Franck-Condon overlap.  相似文献

A theoretical six-level model for blinking fluorescence of single PPV-PPyV copolymer molecule excited by CW-laser light is proposed. The model has been chosen in accordance with the following facts found in the Paul Barbara group experiment: (i) alternation of two types of fluorescence with moderate and strong levels of emission, (ii) existence of "dark" states with no fluorescence, (iii) linear dependence of inverse on-interval duration on laser intensity, and (iv) existence of laser intensity independent off-intervals. Relations between the distribution function w'(N, T) for photons emitted by a single molecule, the distribution function w'(N, T) for photons arriving at photomultiplier tube (PMT) and photo-electric pulse distribution w(N, T) created in a PMT are discussed. The theory is able to describe pulse distribution function w(N, T) measured experimentally at signal acquisition time T = 0.1 s. Values of all rate constants of the model have been found from comparison of the theory with the experiment. Distributions w(on, off)(t) of on- and off-times and distribution w(N, T) of pulses have been calculated for infrequent and frequent inter-conformational jumps in single copolymer molecule.  相似文献

We present a joint theoretical and experimental study of the maximization of the isotopomer ratio (23)Na(39)K(23)Na(41)K using tailored phase-only as well as amplitude and phase modulated femtosecond laser fields obtained in the framework of optimal control theory and closed loop learning (CLL) technique. A good agreement between theoretically and experimentally optimized pulse shapes is achieved which allows to assign the optimized processes directly to the pulse shapes obtained by the experimental isotopomer selective CLL approach. By analyzing the dynamics induced by the optimized pulses we show that the mechanism involving the dephasing of the wave packets between the isotopomers (23)Na (39)K and (23)Na (41)K on the first excited state is responsible for high isotope selective ionization. Amplitude and phase modulated pulses, moreover, allow to establish the connection between the spectral components of the pulse and corresponding occupied vibronic states. It will be also shown that the leading features of the theoretically shaped pulses are independent from the initial conditions. Since the underlying processes can be assigned to the individual features of the shaped pulses, we show that optimal control can be used as a tool for analysis.

Two-photon excitation with femtosecond laser pulses in the spectral range 240-250 nm was used to prepare vapor phase H(2)O and D(2)O in the C (1)B(1) and D (1)A(1) states. Both states are predissociated via the B (1)A(1) state, forming excited OH/OD(A (2)Sigma(+)) as well as ground state OH/OD(X (2)Pi). We used ultrashort infrared probe pulses (1.65-2.42 microm) to control the ratio between these excited and ground state fragments originating from the dissociation process. Time resolved detection of the OH/OD(A (2)Sigma(+)) --> OH/OD(X (2)Pi) fluorescence allows us to monitor the dynamics of the predissociation. For the heterogeneous predissociation out of the C(1)B(1) state life times of (0.5 +/- 0.1) ps and (1.2 +/- 0.1) ps were found for H(2)O and D(2)O, respectively. The purely homogeneous character of the predissociation out of the D (1)A(1) state was monitored.  相似文献

Coherent manipulation of molecular wavepackets in biomolecules might contribute to the quest towards label-free cellular imaging and protein identification. We report the use of optimally tailored UV laser pulses in pump-probe depletion experiments that selectively enhance or decrease fluorescence between two aromatic amino acids: tryptophan (Trp) and tyrosine (Tyr). Selective fluorescence modulation is achieved with a contrast of ~35%. A neat modification of the time-dependent fluorescence depletion signal of Trp is observed, while the Tyr transient trace remains unchanged. The mechanism invoked for explaining the change of the depletion of Trp is a less efficient coupling between the fluorescing state and the higher non-radiative excited states by the optimally shaped pulse, than by the reference pulse.  相似文献

The dynamics of the reaction, Y + O2--> YO + O was studied by using the crossed-beam technique at several collision energies from 10.3 to 52.0 kJ mol(-1). The Y atomic beam was generated by laser vaporization and crossed with the O2 beam at a right angle. Among the energetically accessible electronic states of YO, the formation of the A2Pi and A'2Delta states was observed by their chemiluminescence at all collision energies. By analyzing the chemiluminescence spectra of YO(A2Pi(1/2,3/2)-X2Sigma+), vibrational state distributions and relative populations of spin-orbit states were determined for YO(A2Pi(1/2,3/2)). At low collision energies, the vibrational distributions agree quite well with those expected from the statistical energy partitioning, while a little deviation from the statistical expectation was observed at the highest energy, 52.0 kJ mol(-1). The populations of two spin-orbit states are in good agreement with the statistical expectations at all collision energies. The vacuum ultraviolet laser-induced fluorescence (VUV-LIF) technique was employed to determine the distributions of spin-orbit states of the product O(3P(J)) at two collision energies, 20.7 and 52.0 kJ mol(-1). The line shapes of the O atom transitions were analyzed to determine relative branching ratio of the ground state to the excited states of YO, i.e. YO(X2Sigma+)+ O(3P(J))vs. YO(A2Pi and A'2Delta)+ O(3P(J)). The results showed that the electronically excited YO was formed with comparable amount with the ground state which is statistically more favorable, and suggested the occurrence of two mechanisms taking place in the title reaction.  相似文献

When the absorption of light from nanosecond laser pulses gives rise to a short-lived biphotonic fluorescence the lifetime of the excited state can be derived from the dependence of the intensity of the fluorescence on the energy of the laser pulse. The results of investigations by Müller and Pflüger on cryptocyanine in methanol and glycerol are used to illustrate the principle of the method. An analysis of their data leads to a lifetime for the lowest singlet excited state of about 15 psec and 200 psec for methanol and glycerol, respectively.  相似文献

Optical properties are important parameters in port wine stain laser treatment models. In this study we investigated whether changes in blood optical properties occur during a 0.5 ms laser pulse. Blood from three volunteers was irradiated in vitro with laser pulses (radiant exposure 2–12 J cm−2, wavelength 586 nm, pulse length 0.5 ms). Reflection and transmission coefficients, measured using double integrating spheres, decreased slightly during the first part of the pulse. At 2.9 J cm−2 radiant exposure, the reflectance increased, independent of total radiant exposure of the pulse. This was caused by blood coagulation. A second sudden increase in reflection and a significant increase in transmission occurred near 6.3 J cm–2 and was accompanied by a "popping" sound, indicating rapid expansion of bubbles due to blood vaporization. A multilayered model of blood was used to fit calculated transmission coefficient curves to the measurements and determine temperature-dependent optical blood absorption. Heat diffusion was shown to be of minor importance. A 2.5-fold increase in absorption for temperatures increasing from 20 to 100°C, accurately describes transmission coefficients measured up to 2.9 J cm−2.  相似文献

The dissociation dynamics of Br2 molecules induced by two femtosecond pump pulses are studied based on the calculation of time-dependent quantum wave packet. Perpendicular transition from X 1Sigma g+ to A 3Pi 1u+ and 1Pi 1u+ and parallel transition from X 1Sigma g+ to B 3Pi 0u+, involving two product channels Br (2P3/2)+Br (2P3/2) and Br (2P3/2)+Br* (2P1/2), respectively, are taken into account. Two pump pulses create dissociating wave packets interfering with each other. By varying laser parameters, the interference of dissociating wave packets can be controlled, and the dissociation probabilities of Br2 molecules on the three excited states can be changed to different degrees. The branching ratio of Br*/(Br+Br*) is calculated as a function of pulse delay time and phase difference.  相似文献

Abstract— The quantum yield of bleaching of isorhodopsin relative to that of rhodopsin was measured by irradiation of both pigments with a steady light source or a picosecond laser pulse. The each pigment was prepared by incubation of 11- cis or 9 -cis retinal with opsin, respectively. The ratio of isorhodopsin to rhodopsin in the quantum yield was estimated to be 0.37 using irradiation with a steady light, while with a weak picosecond laser pulse (excitation photon density: below 20 μ.J/1.8 mmφ), it was estimated to be 0.39. Both values are in good agreement with each other. On the other hand, excitation with a strong picosecond laser pulse (above 20 μ.J/1.8 mmφ) produced a larger ratio than 0.39, indicating that saturation effects can be easily observed by irradiation with strong picosecond laser pulses.  相似文献

A detailed dynamical theory of photobleaching by periodical sequences of laser pulses is presented. The theory is used for interpretation of recent experiments with pyrylium salts. Our simulations are based on first-principles simulations of photoabsorption cross-sections and on empirical rate constants. Two competitive channels of photobleaching, namely, photobleaching from the lowest excited singlet and triplet states and from higher excited states, are found to explain different intensity dependences of the photobleaching rates in different samples. The process includes two-photon excitation from the ground state to the first or second excited singlet states and one-photon excitation from the first singlet or triplet states to higher excited states. The fluorescence follows double-exponential dynamics with two characteristic times. The first and the shorter one is the equilibrium settling time between the ground and the lowest triplet states. The second characteristic time, the time of photobleaching, is responsible for the long-term dynamics. The effective rate of photobleaching from the first excited singlet and lowest triplet states depends differently on the irradiance in comparison with the photobleaching in higher states. The first channel is characterized by a quadratic intensity dependence in contrast to the second channel that shows a cubic dependence. The competition between these photobleaching channels is very sensitive to the rate constants as well as to the repetition rate, the pulse duration, and the peak intensity. The double-exponential decay of the fluorescence is explained by the spatial inhomogeneity of the light beam. The findings in this work are discussed in terms of the possibility of using many-photon-induced photobleaching for new three-dimensional read-write devices.  相似文献

The excitation of pBr322 supercoiled plasmid DNA with intense near-IR 810 nm fs laser pulses by a simultaneous multiphoton absorption mechanism results in single-strand breaks after treatment of the irradiated samples with Micrococcus luteus UV endonuclease. This enzyme cleaves DNA strands at sites of cyclobutane dimers that are formed by the simultaneous absorption of three (or more) 810 nm IR photons (pulse width approximately 140 fs, 76 MHz pulse repetition, average power output focused through 10x microscope objective is approximately 1.2 MW/cm2). Direct single-strand breaks (without treatment with M. luteus) were not observed under these conditions. However, in the presence of 6 microM of the intercalator proflavine (PF), both direct single- and double-strand breaks are observed under conditions where substantial fractions of undamaged supercoiled DNA molecules are still present. The fraction of direct double-strand breaks is 30 +/- 5% of all measurable strand cleavage events, is independent of dosage (up to 6.4 GJ/cm2) and is proportional to In, where I is the average power/area of the 810 nm fs laser pulses, and n = 3 +/- 1. The nicking of two DNA strands in the immediate vicinity of the excited PF molecules gives rise to this double-strand cleavage. In contrast, excitation of the same samples under low-power, single-photon absorption conditions (approximately 400-500 nm) gives rise predominantly to single-strand breaks, but some double-strand breaks are observed at the higher dosages. Thus, single-photon excitation with 400-500 nm light and multiphoton activation of PF by near-IR fs laser pulses produces different distributions of single- and double-strand breaks. These results suggest that DNA strand cleavage originates from unrelaxed, higher excited states when PF is excited by simultaneous IR multiphoton absorption processes.  相似文献

We report quantum dynamical simulations for the laser controlled isomerization of 1-(2-cis-fluoroethenyl)-2-fluorobenzene based on one-dimensional electronic ground and excited state potentials obtained from (TD)DFT calculations. 1-(2-cis-fluoroethenyl)-2-fluorobenzene supports two chiral and one achiral atropisomers, the latter being the most stable isomer at room temperature. Using a linearly polarized IR laser pulse the molecule is excited to an internal rotation around its chiral axis, i.e. around the C-C single bond between phenyl ring and ethenyl group, changing the molecular chirality. A second linearly polarized laser pulse stops the torsion to prepare the desired enantiomeric form of the molecule. This laser control allows the selective switching between the achiral and either the left- or right-handed form of the molecule. Once the chirality is "switched on" linearly polarized UV laser pulses allow the selective change of the chirality using the electronic excited state as intermediate state.  相似文献

Sequences of pulses with different spectra are used to control rotational wave packet dynamics in Li(2) by exploiting quantum interference phenomena. Wave packet superpositions are excited in a two-step resonant Raman process by two different pulses. Interferences between individual states shared by both wave packets can be used to enhance or destroy specific components of a superposition by varying the time delay between the pulses and/or the relative phase within the pulses. Elimination of selected quantum beats is achieved by greater than 94% for each case. A simple, yet effective, method for generating different color phase-locked pairs of laser pulses in a liquid-crystal pulse shaper setup without the need for interferometric stabilization schemes is described. The ability to manipulate single states of a superposition is an important advancement for intuitive control schemes and provides a potential new approach for initialization schemes in the field of quantum information.  相似文献

Abstract— The decay profiles of the fluorescence of dark-adapted spinach chloroplasts (0C) excited with single 30 ps 532 nm laser pulses of varying intensities were measured with a low-jitter streak camera system. By comparing the decay profiles of the fluorescence at low and high laser fluences, i.e. in the absence and presence, respectively, of dynamic bimolecular exciton-exciton annihilation effects, the duration of such dynamic annihilation events can be estimated. A simple model suggests that the influence of bimolecular annihilation events on the fluorescence decay kinetics should disappear within a time interval corresponding to the low intensity, unimolecular lifetime of the exciton population which is subject to exciton-exciton annihilation. The low intensity fluorescence decay profiles are characterized by three to four lifetimes (Reviewed by A. R. Holzwarth, Photochem. Photobiol. 43,707–725, 1986); it is shown here that only the shortest fluorescence components are subject to exciton annihilation, since the kinetics of the fluorescence decay are influenced by annihilations only within the initial 150–200 ps time interval after the excitation pulse. The amplitudes (but not the decay kinetics) of the longer-lived fluorescence components are decreased at high levels of laser pulse excitations, suggesting that these components are derived from the shorter-lived fluorescence decay components. The implications of these results are*discussed within the contexts of current models of the fluorescence in chloroplasts.  相似文献
