We devise and apply a simple computational scheme for obtaining localized bonding schemes and their weights from a CASSCF wave function. These bonding schemes are close to resonance structures drawn by chemists. Firstly, a CASSCF wave function is computed. Secondly, the CASSCF computation is repeated but now the delocalized complete active space MOs are substituted by Weinhold's localized natural atomic orbitals. In this way the original CASSCF wave function is represented by a sequence of Slater determinants composed of localized natural atomic orbitals. Thus, a standard CASSCF wave function can be reinterpreted in terms of a local picture. To test the method we obtain localized bonding schemes and their weights for the ground and the pi-pi* excited state of ethylene. Moreover, bonding schemes and their weights are derived for the ground, the 1(1)B(u), and the 2(1)Ag pi-pi* excited states of trans-butadiene. The large weight bonding schemes are shown to be a qualitative indicator for the known photochemistry of butadiene. The remarkable stability of the Arduengo carbene is discussed by obtaining bonding schemes that indicate a stabilizing delocalization of the pi electrons. We illustrate that the large weight bonding schemes are in line with the observed reactivity of the Arduengo carbene.  相似文献

A straightforward procedure is proposed for expanding a molecular orbital determinantal wave function into a set of determinantal wave functions composed of atomic orbitals localized at the atoms of a molecule. By employing this method, atomic orbital determinants and their weights can be derived for a molecule from the computed molecular-orbital wave function. The procedure permits the interpretation of a molecular orbital determinantal wave function in terms of bonding schemes related to the classic resonance structures used by organic chemists. By using the unrestricted molecular orbital determinant, bonding schemes and their weights are obtained for butadiene, the butadiene radical cation and the acrylonitrile radical anion. Their dominant bonding schemes are in accord with the relevant resonance structures for these molecules. For the butadiene radical cation and the acrylonitrile anion they are shown to be compatible with the accepted mechanisms of the electrochemical coupling reactions of butadiene and acrylonitrile. We present easily programmable expansions, allowing the calculation of the weights of local covalent and ionic structures of a chemical bond from usual delocalized wave functions; they are obtained in the framework of the electron-expansion methodology, in which the hole conditions (involved by definition in a covalent or ionic structure) are expanded in terms involving only electrons. From the derived relations, true for both HF and correlated levels, one can also express the covalency/ionicity and the localization of a usual two-electron two-center (2e/2c) bond in terms of electronic populations. The three-electron populations are crucial for bond localization. On the contrary, in 2e/2c bonding, and particularly in Charge-Shift bonds (which show enhanced covalent-ionic interactions) although the three-electron populations can be non-negligible, they are not important for the covalency/ionicity of these bonds. Numerical applications and discussion are given for correlated MO wave functions of butadiene, hexatriene, and pyrrole molecules on the basis of both natural atomic orbitals (NAOs) (orthogonal orbitals) and pre-NAOs (nonorthogonal orbitals).  相似文献

A non‐iterative algorithm for the localization of molecular orbitals (MOs) from complete active space self consistent field (CASSCF) and for single‐determinantal wave functions on predefined moieties is given. The localized fragment orbitals can be used to analyze chemical reactions between fragments and also the binding of fragments in the product molecule with a fragments‐in‐molecules approach by using a valence bond expansion of the CASSCF wave function. The algorithm is an example of the orthogonal Procrustes problem, which is a matrix optimization problem using the singular value decomposition. It is based on the similarity of the set of MOs for the moieties to the localized MOs of the molecule; the similarity is expressed by overlap matrices between the original fragment MOs and the localized MOs. For CASSCF wave functions, localization is done independently in the space of occupied orbitals and active orbitals, whereas, the space of virtual orbitals is mostly uninteresting. Localization of Hartree–Fock or Kohn–Sham density functional theory orbitals is not straightforward; rather, it needs careful consideration, because in this case some virtual orbitals are needed but the space of virtual orbitals depends on the basis sets used and causes considerable problems due to the diffuse character of most virtual orbitals. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

A multiconfigurational self-consistent field method based on the concept of generalized active space (GAS) is presented. GAS wave functions are obtained by defining an arbitrary number of active spaces with arbitrary occupation constraints. By a suitable choice of the GAS spaces, numerous ineffective configurations present in a large complete active space (CAS) can be removed, while keeping the important ones in the CI space. As a consequence, the GAS self-consistent field approach retains the accuracy of the CAS self-consistent field (CASSCF) ansatz and, at the same time, can deal with larger active spaces, which would be unaffordable at the CASSCF level. Test calculations on the Gd atom, Gd(2) molecule, and oxoMn(salen) complex are presented. They show that GAS wave functions achieve the same accuracy as CAS wave functions on systems that would be prohibitive at the CAS level.  相似文献

The ground and excited states of the AmO(2) (+), AmO(2) (2+), and AmO(2) (3+) ions have been studied using the four-component configuration interaction singles doubles, spin-orbit complete active space self-consistent field, and spin-orbit complete active space-order perturbation theory methods. The roles of scalar relativistic effects and spin-orbit coupling are analyzed; results with different methods are carefully compared by a precise analysis of the wave functions. A molecular spinor diagram is used in relation to the four-component calculations while a ligand field model is used for the two-step method. States with the same number of electrons in the four nonbonding orbitals are in very good agreement with the two methods while ligand field and charge transfer states do not have the same excitation energies.  相似文献

A multireference second-order perturbation theory using a restricted active space self-consistent field wave function as reference (RASPT2/RASSCF) is described. This model is particularly effective for cases where a chemical system requires a balanced orbital active space that is too large to be addressed by the complete active space self-consistent field model with or without second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2 or CASSCF, respectively). Rather than permitting all possible electronic configurations of the electrons in the active space to appear in the reference wave function, certain orbitals are sequestered into two subspaces that permit a maximum number of occupations or holes, respectively, in any given configuration, thereby reducing the total number of possible configurations. Subsequent second-order perturbation theory captures additional dynamical correlation effects. Applications of the theory to the electronic structure of complexes involved in the activation of molecular oxygen by mono- and binuclear copper complexes are presented. In the mononuclear case, RASPT2 and CASPT2 provide very similar results. In the binuclear cases, however, only RASPT2 proves quantitatively useful, owing to the very large size of the necessary active space.  相似文献

The singlet and triplet excited states of hydrogen cyanide have been computed by using the complete active space self-consistent field and completed active space second order perturbation methods with the atomic natural orbital (ANO-L) basis set. Through calculations of vertical excitation energies, we have probed the transitions from ground state to valence excited states, and further extensions to the Rydberg states are achieved by adding 1s1p1d Rydberg orbitals into the ANO-L basis set. Four singlet and nine triplet excited states have been optimized. The computed adiabatic energies and the vertical transition energies agree well with the available experimental data and the inconsistencies with the available theoretical reports are discussed in detail.  相似文献

The active space approach for coupled-cluster models is generalized using the general active space concept and implemented in a string-based general coupled-cluster code. Particular attention is devoted to the choice of orbitals on which the subspace division is based. Seminatural orbitals are proposed for that purpose. These orbitals are obtained by diagonalizing only the hole-hole and particle-particle block of the one-electron density of a lower-order method. The seminatural orbitals are shown to be a good replacement for complete active space self-consistent field orbitals and avoid the ambiguities with respect to the reference determinant introduced by the latter orbitals. The seminatural orbitals also perform well in excited state calculations, including excited states with strong double excitation contributions, which usually are difficult to describe with standard coupled-cluster methods. A set of vertical excitation energies is obtained and benchmarked against full configuration interaction calculations, and alternative hierarchies of active space coupled-cluster models are proposed. As a simple application the spectroscopic constants of the C(2) B (1)Delta(g) and B(') (1)Sigma(g) (+) states are calculated using active space coupled-cluster methods and basis sets up to quadruple-zeta quality in connection with extrapolation and additivity schemes.  相似文献

Our ab initio all-electron fully relativistic Dirac-Fock (DF) and nonrelativistic (NR) Hartree-Fock (HF) self-consistent field (SCF) calculations predict the superheavy diatomic ekaplutonium fluoride E126F to be bound with the calculated dissociation energy of 7.44 and 10.46 eV at the predicted E126-F bond lengths of 2.03 and 2.18 Angstroms, respectively. The antibinding effects of relativity to the dissociation energy of E126F are approximately 3 eV. The predicted dissociation energy with both our NR HF and relativistic DF SCF wave functions is fairly large and is comparable to that for very stable diatomics. This is the first case, where in a diatomic, an atom has g orbital (l = 4) occupied in its ground state electronic configuration and such superheavy diatomics would have occupied molecular spinors (orbitals) consisting of g atomic spinors (orbitals). This opens up a whole new field of chemistry where g atomic spinors (orbitals) may be involved in electronic structure and chemical bonding of systems of superheavy elements with Z> or =122.  相似文献

In previous work we have shown that the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) enables near-exact calculations in active spaces much larger than are possible with traditional complete active space algorithms. Here, we implement orbital optimization with the DMRG to further allow the self-consistent improvement of the active orbitals, as is done in the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method. We use our resulting DMRG-CASSCF method to study the low-lying excited states of the all-trans polyenes up to C24H26 as well as beta-carotene, correlating with near-exact accuracy the optimized complete pi-valence space with up to 24 active electrons and orbitals, and analyze our results in the light of the recent discovery from resonance Raman experiments of new optically dark states in the spectrum.  相似文献

The factors influencing the quality of the nodal surfaces, namely, the atomic basis set, the single-particle orbitals, and the configurations included in the wave-function expansion, are examined for a few atomic and molecular systems. The following empirical rules are found: the atomic basis set must be fairly large, complete active space and natural orbitals are usually better than Hartree-Fock orbitals, multiconfiguration expansions perform better than single-determinant wave functions, but only few configurations are effective and their choice is suggested by symmetry considerations, while too long determinantal expansions spoil the nodal surfaces. These rules allow us to reduce the nodal error and to compute the best fixed node-diffusion Monte Carlo energies for a series of dimers of first-row atoms.  相似文献

We present an efficient O(N) implementation of screened hybrid density functional for periodic systems with numerical atomic orbitals (NAOs). NAOs of valence electrons are fitted with gaussian-type orbitals, which is convenient for the calculation of electron repulsion integrals and the construction of Hartree-Fock exchange matrix elements. All other parts of Hamiltonian matrix elements are constructed directly with NAOs. The strict locality of NAOs is adopted as an efficient two-electron integral screening technique to speed up calculations.  相似文献

When appropriately used, the multiconfigurational self-consistent field (MCSCF) approximation is useful in discerning correct electronic structure results. However, with the increasing size of chemical systems of interest, MCSCF rapidly becomes unfeasible due to the requirement of larger active spaces, which lead to computationally unmanageable numbers of configurations. This situation is especially true for complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF). In particular, reducing this computational expense by using restricted active spaces in solving for gradients and nonadiabatic couplings (NACs) during dynamics runs would save computer time. However, the validity of such restricted spaces is not well-known even for recovering the majority of the nondynamical correlation and inevitably varies between chemical systems across a range of nuclear geometries. As such, we use the recently implemented coupled perturbed–occupation restricted multiple active space (CP-ORMAS) equations (West et al., unpublished) to verify the accuracy of this approximation for gradients and NACs vectors around two specific conical intersection geometries for the silaethylene and butadiene systems. Overall, no excitations between appropriate subspaces show qualitatively reasonable results while single excitations significantly improve ORMAS results relative to the CASSCF level in these particular systems. However, single excitation schemes do not always lead to the correct orbital subspaces, and as a result, seemingly smooth potential energy surfaces (PES) do not always result in smooth analytical gradients and NACs. In addition, while some of the single excitation ORMAS and CASSCF schemes have improper orbitals rotate into the active space, the schemes without excitations (even with more subspaces) do not exhibit this behavior.  相似文献

A new computational scheme is applied to rationalize the different protonation behaviors of the nitrido complexes [L'Mn(V)(N)(acac)](+), [LCr(V)(N)(acac)](+), and [LV(V)(N)(acac)](+). L and L' represent the macrocycles 1,4,7-triazacyclononane and its N-methylated derivative, respectively, and acac is the bidentate monoanion pentane-2,4-dionate. The bonds of the complexes are partitioned into bonds to be investigated and bonds of lesser interest. The investigated bonds are the transition metal nitrido bonds M(V)[triple chemical bond]N| (M = Mn, Cr, and V) and the bonds of lesser interest are located in the ligands. The ligand bonds are described by means of the strongly occupied natural bond orbitals. The electrons in the M(V)[triple chemical bond]N| nitrido bonds, however, are treated more accurately. A full configuration interaction procedure is applied in the space spanned by the strongly occupied natural bond orbitals and their corresponding antibonding orbitals. Localized bonding schemes and their weights are obtained for the d(pi)-p(pi) bonds of interest. This is achieved by representing the two-center natural bond orbitals for a d(pi)-p(pi) bond by the one-center natural hybrid orbitals localized at the bond atoms. The obtained bonding schemes are close to orthogonal valence bond structures. Their weights indicate that the nitrido nitrogen in [LV(V)(N)(acac)](+) is more easily protonated than the nitrido nitrogens in [L'Mn(V)(N)(acac)](+) and [LCr(V)(N)(acac)](+). This result is in good accord with experiment.  相似文献

Relativistic two-component ab initio calculations have been performed for the Th atom. The spin free low lying states have been calculated at state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field (SA-CASSCF) and multi-state complete active space second-order perturbation (MS-CASPT2) level of theories using different sets of active orbitals. The spin-orbit states have been computed using Douglas-Kroll type of atomic mean-field integral approach. The effects of dynamic electron correlation have been studied at the MS-CASPT2 level. The energy levels of spin-orbit states below 30,000 cm(-1) obtained by the inclusion of dynamic electron correlation are in very good agreement with the experimental values. The radiative properties such as weighted transition probabilities (gA) and oscillator strengths (gf) among several spin-orbit states have been calculated at the SA-CASSCF and MS-CASPT2 levels and are expected to be very helpful for future experiments.
