Self-organized systems have attracted much at-tention due to their potential applications in nano- technology as a bottom-up?approach for the con-struction of molecule-scale devices and nanostruc-tures[1—4]. Beyond the self-assembly of small molecu-lar building blocks, Schnherr et al. recently suc-ceeded in arranging the rosette supramolecular nanos-tructures in two dimensions on HOPG[5,6]. Moreover, interest has tremendously increased in the su-pramolecular structures via coordination-dr… 相似文献

Electron spin resonance (ESR), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) have been used in parallel to characterize the deposition on gold surface of a series of nitronyl nitroxide radicals. These compounds have been specifically synthesized with methyl-thio linking groups suitable to interact with the gold surface to form self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), which can be considered relevant in the research for molecular-based spintronics devices, as suggested in recent papers. The degree of the expected ordering on the surface of these SAMs has been tuned by varying the chemical structure of synthesized radicals. ToF-SIMS has been used to support the evidence of the occurrence of the deposition process. STM has shown the different qualities of the obtained SAMs, with the degree of local order increasing as the degree of freedom of the molecules on the surface is decreased. Finally, ESR has confirmed that the deposition process does not affect the paramagnetic characteristics of radicals and that it affords a complete single-layered coverage of the surface. Further, the absence of angular dependence in the spectra indicates that the small regions of local ordering do not give rise to a long-range order and suggests a quite large mobility of the radical on the surface, probably due to the weak interaction with gold provided by the methyl-thio linking group. 相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was employed to investigate the adsorption of the linear-spacer-bridged ligands bis(pyrrol-2-yl-methyleneamine) (BPMB and BPMmB), and their Zn(II)-coordinated complexes, BPMB/Zn(II) and BPMmB/Zn(II), onto a Au(111) surface in 0.1 M HClO(4) solution. Both the ligands, with different spacer bridges, and their Zn(II) complexes adsorb onto the Au(111) surface and self-organize into highly ordered two-dimensional arrays. The complexes BPMB/Zn(II) and BPMmB/Zn(II) appear in helical and triangular conformations, respectively, consistent with their chemical structures. Although the metal complexes include ligands, the assembled structures and adlayer symmetries of the ligands and complexes are totally different. The structures and intramolecular features obtained by high-resolution STM imaging are discussed. The results should be important in fabricating surface supramolecular structures. 相似文献

The structure and reactivity of bimetallic electrodes obtained by spontaneous deposition of Ru and Os on Au(111) single-crystal
surfaces are studied. In situ electrochemical STM and cyclic voltammetry are used to characterize a wide range of surface
morphologies thus produced. The STM results on Ru/Au(111) demonstrate a pronounced step decoration, while a random distribution
of Ru nuclei, quite uniform in size, occurs on terraces. Osmium deposits show a slight preference for deposition on steps,
but it also occurs readily on terraces. However, many of the Os islands grow into multilayer heights. The coverage of the
Au(111) by the deposited Ru or Os islands for a particular solution concentration depends on the deposition time. Nanostructures
of Ru and Os are tested for catalytic behavior and correlated to CO oxidation activity as measured by CO stripping voltammetry.

The electrodeposition of Zn on Au(111) was investigated with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in the air and water stable ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethylsulfonate ([EMIm]TfO) with a Zn(TfO)2 concentration of 0.2 M. It has been found that the structure [EMIm]TfO/Au(111) is very complex. Furthermore, the addition of Zn(TfO)2 changes the interfacial structure significantly. The first STM-probed Zn islands appear at +0.3 V, and their growth leads to the formation of a thin zinc layer. A bulk deposition of Zn is obtained with in situ STM at ?0.1 V. Furthermore, in situ STM reveals that the deposition of Zn is accompanied by the formation of Au-Zn surface alloys. 相似文献

Five hexaalkylguanidinium-based ionic liquids have been synthesised, and based on their cyclic voltammograms the most suited one, N,N-dibutyl-N',N'-diethyl-N',N'-dimethylguanidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, has been chosen for electrochemical studies. The surface interaction of this room-temperature ionic liquid with single crystalline gold surfaces (Au(100) and Au(111)) has been investigated using cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy and in situ scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). The interfacial capacitance was found to be very low; STM measurements revealed the hex-reconstruction and herringbone reconstruction for Au(100) and for Au(111), respectively, at negative potentials; that is, at these potentials no hints for ad-structures of the cation could be found. 相似文献

A method is presented for depositing mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of dodecanethiol (C12) and 4'-methyl-1,1'-biphenyl-4-butane (H3C-C6H4-C6H4-(CH2)4-SH, BP4) by insertion of BP4 into a closely packed SAM of dodecanethiol on Au(111). Insertion takes place at defect sites such as domain boundaries or etch pits in the gold surface that are characteristic of C12 monolayers on gold. With a lower probability, insertion also occurs beside defect sites inside dodecanethiol domains. Insertion at defect sites results in domains of BP4, whereas insertion into C12 domains leads to isolated BP4 molecules. The isolated BP4 molecules are shown not to move at room temperature. By comparing the apparent height of the isolated BP4 molecules and BP4 domains, it is proposed that the isolated molecules have the same conformation as in the full-coverage phase. A simple two-layer model is proposed to characterize the current transport through BP4. The decay constant beta for the phenylene groups is deduced from the apparent STM heights of the inserted BP4 islands compared to the STM heights of the C12 closely packed monolayers. 相似文献

Peptide dendrimers assembled by solid-phase peptide synthesis using a branching diamino acid at every 2(nd) or 3(rd) position provide readily accessible synthetic model systems for proteins and enzymes. They adopt a globular shape by topology rather than by folding. Peptide dendrimers of 2(nd) and 3(rd) generation functionalized with a cysteine or cystine residue in the core were adsorbed on Au(111) surface and imaged by STM at air, under UHV, or in solution. The dendrimers appear as globular features with dimensions suggesting an extended flattened conformation, forming both single globules and ordered arrays on the surface. These images represent the first direct visualization of peptide dendrimer enzyme models. 相似文献

We report the dispersion and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) characterization of iso-lated Au-CdSe nanohybrids on atomically flat Au(111) through surface modifications. The top terminal groups of spacer molecules self-assembled on the surface are found critical for locking the nanohybrids into a well-separated state. The STM results indicate that both thiol and carboxylic terminals are effective in this aspect by making strong interaction with the Au portions of the nanohybrids. An argon ion sputtering technique is also proposed to clean up organic contaminants on the surface for improved STM imaging of individual Au-CdSe nanohybrids. These observations help to enrich technical approaches to dispersing individual nanostructures on the surface and provide opportunities to explore their local electroluminescent and energy transfer properties at the nanoscale. 相似文献

Electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM) has been employed to study the structure of a film formed by cationic surfactant N-decyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium triflate (DeTATf) adsorbed on the Au(111) electrode surface. The film is disordered at potentials corresponding to either large negative charge densities or to positive charge densities. At small negative charge densities, an ordered adlayer of flat-lying DeTATf molecules is formed. High-resolution images of this adlayer reveal that the triflate anion is coadsorbed with the N-decyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium cation, effectively forming an ion pair at the electrode surface. This is a significant result because it explains why this surfactant behaves like a zwitterionic surfactant at the metal/solution interface. 相似文献

The chemisorptive bonding of methanethiolate (CH(3)S) on the Au(111) surface has been investigated at a single-molecule level using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM) and density functional theory (DFT). The CH(3)S species were produced by STM-tip-induced dissociation of methanethiol (CH(3)SH) or dimethyl disulfide (CH(3)SSCH(3)) at 5 K. The adsorption site of an isolated CH(3)S species was assigned by comparing the experimental and calculated STM images. We conclude that the S-headgroup of chemisorbed CH(3)S adsorbs on the 2-fold coordinated bridge site between two Au atoms, consistent with theoretical predictions for CH(3)S on the nondefective Au(111) surface. Our assignment is also supported by the freezing of the tip-induced rotational dynamics of a single CH(3)SH molecule upon conversion to CH(3)S via deprotonation. 相似文献

Atomic monolayer islands of Pt, namely, two-dimensional Pt nanoparticles, on a Au(111) electrode have been studied for the first time, focusing on their electrocatalytic activities for oxygen reduction in acid solutions. The Pt islands' electrodes were prepared using the self-assembled technique of thiols together with the replacement of Pt with a Cu monolayer. The states of adsorbed OH and the catalytic activities of oxygen reduction were sensitive to the Pt island size. As island size decreased, a delay in the reduction of surface oxide was observed. However, negligible influence of adsorbed OH on activity for oxygen reduction was observed. Pt islands of sizes ranging from 5 to 10 nm showed higher specific catalytic activities for oxygen reduction. Specific catalytic activities decreased by a factor of 10 with a decrease in island sizes from 5.5 to 3.1 nm. Size effects observed in Pt monolayer islands were discussed in comparison with three-dimensional nanoparticles, to obtain information concerning the size effects of metal nanoparticles. 相似文献

Carbohydrates are the most abundant organic material on Earth and the structural “material of choice” in many living systems. Nevertheless, design and engineering of synthetic carbohydrate materials presently lag behind that for protein and nucleic acids. Bottom-up engineering of carbohydrate materials demands an atomic-level understanding of their molecular structures and interactions in condensed phases. Here, high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is used to visualize at submolecular resolution the three-dimensional structure of cellulose oligomers assembled on Au(1111) and the interactions that drive their assembly. The STM imaging, supported by ab initio calculations, reveals the orientation of all glycosidic bonds and pyranose rings in the oligomers, as well as details of intermolecular interactions between the oligomers. By comparing the assembly of D- and L-oligomers, these interactions are shown to be enantioselective, capable of driving spontaneous enantioseparation of cellulose chains from its unnatural enantiomer and promoting the formation of engineered carbohydrate assemblies in the condensed phases. 相似文献

We describe the preparation of a compound whose molecules consist of two metal sandwich stands carrying tentacles with affinity to metal surfaces and holding an axle that carries a dipolar or a nonpolar rotator. The dipolar rotor exists as three pairs of enantiomers, rapidly interconverting at room temperature. When mounted on a gold surface, each molecule represents a chiral altitudinal rotor, with the rotator axle parallel to the surface. The surface-mounted rotor molecules are characterized by several spectroscopic and imaging techniques. At any one time, in about one-third of the dipolar rotors the rotator is free to turn and the direction of its dipole can be flipped by the electric field applied by an STM tip, as revealed by differential barrier height imaging. Molecular dynamics calculations suggest that electric field normal to the surface causes members of one pair of enantiomers to rotate unidirectionally. 相似文献

The adsorption of thiolates with various tail molecules on the Au(111) surface has been investigated by first-principles calculations. We have considered six typical thiolate molecules, that is, methylthiolate, ethylthiolate, ethylenethiolate, acetylenethiolate, benzenethiolate, and thiophenethiolate. It is found that these thiolates exhibit little difference in their stable adsorption geometries. They are adsorbed at the bridge site with being significantly tilted from the surface normal. The adsorption energy of thiolate on Au, on the other hand, largely varies depending on the type of tail molecule, and is linearly proportional to the binding energy of thiolate with H. We discuss the tail molecule dependence in terms of the bonding environment around the C atom connected to the head S atom. 相似文献

In situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was used to examine the structure of thiocyanate adlayers specifically adsorbed
on Rh(111) in solutions of potassium hydroxide and perchloric acid, both containing potassium thiocyanate (KSCN). An atomically
flat terrace-step structure was consistently observed on Rh(111) surfaces prepared by the flame-annealing-quenching method.
The Rh(111)-(1 × 1) atomic structure was discerned on the atomically flat terrace even in the alkaline solution. High-resolution
STM images disclosed two different structures of the SCN− adlayers, () and (2 × 2), in the alkaline and the acidic media, respectively. In each structure, an individual adsorbed SCN− ion appeared as a single spot with a constant corrugation height in STM images, suggesting that SCN− ions adsorbed predominantly with their
S-ends at particular bonding sites on Rh(111). The difference in the adlayer structure in the two solutions can be attributed
to the interaction between adsorbed SCN− and coadsorbed K+ in the alkaline solution, and is different from that between adsorbed SCN− and H+ in the acidic solution.

High resolution scanning tunneling microscopy has been applied to investigate adsorption and self-assembly of large organic molecules on the TiO(2)(011) surface. The (011) face of the rutile titania has been rarely examined in this context. With respect to possible industrial applications of rutile, quite often in a powder form, knowledge on behavior of organic molecules on that face is required. In the presented study we fill in the gap and report on experiments focused on the self-assembly of organic nanostructures on the TiO(2)(011) surface. We use three different kinds of organic molecules of potential interest in various applications, namely, PTCDA and CuPc representing flat, planar stacking species, and Violet Landers specially designed for new applications in molecular electronics. In order to reach a complete picture of molecular behavior, extended studies with different surface coverage ranging from single molecule up to 2 monolayer (ML) thick films are performed. Our results show that the adsorption behavior is significantly different from previously observed for widely used metallic templates. Creation of highly ordered molecular lines, quasi-ordered wetting layers, controlled geometrical reorientation upon thermal treatment, existence of specific adsorption geometries, and prospects for tip-induced molecule ordering and manipulation provide better understanding and add new phenomena to the knowledge on the (011) face of rutile titania. 相似文献
