Methyl-capped poly(ethylene oxide) moieties were chemically bonded to silica gel using an amine-reactive modification reagent and evaluated as the stationary phase for ion chromatography. In this work, primary amino groups of an aminopropylsilica packing material were reacted with methyl-PEO12-NHS ester (succinimidyl-{[N-methyl]-dodecaethyleneglycol} ester) in phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) at room temperature. The prepared poly(ethylene oxide)-bonded stationary was evaluated for the separation of inorganic anions, and the retention behavior of inorganic anions on the prepared stationary phase was examined. The elution order of the investigated anions was the same as that observed in common ion chromatography. Both cations and anions of the eluent affected the retention of the analyte anions. Ion exchange was involved for the retention of analyte anions, although the present stationary phase does not possess any discrete ion-exchange sites. The stationary phase was applied to the separation of trace anions contained in tap water and a rock salt.  相似文献

A retention model based on stoichiometric approach has been developed in order to describe analyte retention of anions on latex-based pellicular ion exchanger. The chromatographic process entails two stepwise and complex equilibria, first is ion-pair forming of analyte or eluent ion with ion-exchange sites under the effect of electrostatic forces due to the sulfonic layer behind the aminated functional groups of stationary phase. Second component is the ion-exchange between the analyte and eluent ions. As a new parameter of the fractional electrostatic coefficient of the ion exchange capacity was introduced to develop retention profiles of anions. Analysis of the dependence of the capacity factors on the eluent concentrations at different values of fractional coefficient shed light on the possible complex mechanism. Extensive experimental retention data were obtained for 14 anions (formate, acetate, propionate, pyruvate, lactate, chloride, nitrate, oxalate, malonate, succinate, tartarate, fumarate, maleate, sulphate) using hydroxide eluents of varying concentration. The ion-pair formation and ion-exchange selectivity constants for analyte and eluent species are determined using derived retention equation from experimental data by nonlinear iterative calculation. The model was utilized to predict retention data under elution conditions of practical importance. The predicted and obtained retention factors are in good agreement, which confirms the predictive power of the model.  相似文献

Inorganic anions were separated on a reversed-phase stationary phase dynamically modified with crown ether as a selector in capillary ion chromatography. The eluent contained crown ether, acetonitrile and a salt. Free and cation-trapped crown ether molecules in the eluent were adsorbed on a hydrophobic stationary phase such as triacontyl-functionalized silica (C30). The eluent cations trapped on crown ether worked as the ion-exchange sites, where the eluent anions and the analyte anions were competing for electrostatic interaction. The sizes of crown ether and the salt cation affected the retention of analyte anions. The concentrations of acetonitrile and crown ether as well as the eluent anion also affected the retention of analyte anions. An aqueous solution containing 18-crown-6-ether, potassium salt and acetonitrile achieved larger retention for analyte anions. Effects of the eluent conditions on the retention of analyte anions were examined in detail.  相似文献

The present article reviews the use of polyethylene glycol (PEG) or polyoxyethylene (POE) as the stationary phase for the separation of inorganic anions in ion chromatography and discusses about the retention mechanisms involved in the separation of anions on the novel stationary phases. PEG permanently coated on a hydrophobic stationary phase retained anions in the partition mode and allowed us to use high-concentration eluents because the retention of anions increased with increasing eluent concentration for most of the eluents. This situation was convenient to determine trace anions contained in seawater samples without any disturbance due to matrices. Chemically bonded POE stationary phases retained not only anions but also cations. Anions were retained in the ion-exchange mode, although POE chains possess no ion exchange sites. The retention behavior suggested that eluent cations could be trapped among multiple POE chains via ion-dipole interaction, and that the trapped cations worked as the anion-exchange sites. Anions could be separated using crown ether, i.e., cyclic POE, as the eluent additive with a hydrophobic stationary phase, where analyte anions were retained via electrostatic interaction with the eluent cation trapped on the crown ether.  相似文献

Inorganic anions could be separated on porous graphitic carbon stationary phases in ion chromatography. Ion exchange between eluent anions and sample anions on the stationary phase was confirmed by the retention behavior and the possibility of indirect photometric detection. The elution order of anions was different from that observed for commercially available anion exchangers. Chloride, nitrate, and sulfate contained in tap water could be determined in 7 min.  相似文献

A combination of hydrophilic interaction chromatographic(HILIC) column and a weakly acidic cation-exchange resin(WCX) column was used for simultaneous separation of inorganic anions and cations by ion chromatography(IC).Firstly, the capability of HILIC column for the separation of analyte ions was evaluated under acidic eluent conditions. The columns used were SeQuant ZIC-HILIC(ZIC-HILIC) with a sulfobetaine-zwitterion stationary phase(ZIC-HILIC) and Acclaim HILIC-10 with a diol stationary phase(HILIC-10).When using tartaric acid as the eluent, the HILIC columns indicated strong retentions for anions, based on ion-pair interaction.Especially,HILIC-10 could strongly retain anions compared with ZIC-HILIC.The selectivity for analyte anions of HILIC-10 with 5 mmol/L tartaric acid eluent was in the order of I-> NO-3 > Br-> Cl-> H2PO-4.However,since HILIC-10 could not separate analyte cations,a WCX column(TSKgel Super IC-A/C) was connected after the HILIC column in series. The combination column system of HILIC and WCX columns could successfully separate ten ions(Na+,NH+4,K+,Mg2+,Ca2+,H2PO-4,Cl-,Br-,NO-3 and I-) with elution of 4 mmol/L tartaric acid plus 8 mmol/L 18-crown-6.The relative standard deviations(RSDs) of analyte ions by the system were in the ranges of 0.02%-0.05% in retention times and 0.18%-5.3% in peak areas through three-time successive injections. The limits of detection at signal-to-noise ratio of 3 were 0.24-0.30 μmol/L for the cations and 0.31-1.2 μmol/L for the anions. This system was applied for the simultaneous determination of the cations and the anions in a vegetable juice sample with satisfactory results.  相似文献

In this investigation, capillary electrochromatography (CEC) with a novel stationary phase proved useful for the separation of neutral and acidic glycosphingolipids (GSLs). Four different gangliosides, namely G(M1a), G(D1a), G(D1b) and G(T1b), served as the acidic GSLs model solutes. The following four GSLs: galactosylceramide (GalCer), lactosylceramide (LacCer), globotriaosylceramide (Gb3Cer) and globotetraosylceramide (Gb4Cer) served as the typical neutral GSLs. The stationary phase, octadecyl sulfonated silica (ODSS), consisted of octadecyl functions bonded to a negatively charged layer containing sulfonic acid groups. Porous and non-porous ODSS stationary phases were examined. The retention behavior of the acidic and neutral GSLs was examined over a wide range of elution conditions, including the nature of the electrolyte and organic modifier and the pH of the mobile phase. The porous ODSS stationary phase yielded the separation of the four different gangliosides using a hydro-organic eluent of moderate eluent strength whereas the non-porous ODSS stationary phase permitted the separation of the four neutral GSLs with a mobile phase of relatively high eluent strength.  相似文献

Ion chromatography (IC) is one of the most powerful analysis technologies for the determination of charged compounds. A novel click lysine stationary phase was prepared via Cu(I) catalyzed alkyne-azide 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition (CuAAC) and applied to the analysis of inorganic ions. The chromatographic evaluation demonstrated good performance (e.g. the plate number of thiocyanate is ~50,000 plates m(-1)) and effective separation ability for the common inorganic anions with aqueous Na(2)SO(4) eluent. The separation mechanism was observed to be mainly dominated by ion exchange interaction. The retention of these analytes is highly dependent on the pH value of eluent. Compared with the lysine stationary phase prepared via the conventional manner, the click lysine exchanger demonstrated shorter retention time and better ion separation characteristics under the same chromatographic conditions, which is a great advantage for rapid separation and analysis of inorganic ions.  相似文献

Effects of eluent composition on retention behavior of inorganic anions have been investigated in ion chromatography using anion-exchangers modified with heparin. Both cation and anion of the eluent affected the retention of analyte anions and unusual retention behavior was observed on the modified stationary phase. The retention time of anions decreased with decreasing eluent concentration when sodium sulfate, magnesium sulfate and chlorides of alkali metals were used as the eluent, whereas it increased with decreasing eluent concentration when aluminum sulfate, copper sulfate and sulfuric acid were used as the eluent. The retention of nitrate increased in the order of Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+ and Cs+ when their chlorides were used as the eluent. When sodium perchlorate and chlorides of alkaline-earth metals were used as the eluent, the eluent should include heparin. Otherwise, the modifier was partially bled from the column.  相似文献

The ion-exchange separation of organic anions of varying molecular mass has been demonstrated using ion chromatography with isocratic, gradient and multi-step eluent profiles on commercially available columns with UV detection. A retention model derived previously for inorganic ions and based solely on electrostatic interactions between the analytes and the stationary phase was applied. This model was found to accurately describe the observed elution of all the anions under isocratic, gradient and multi-step eluent conditions. Hydrophobic interactions, although likely to be present to varying degrees, did not limit the applicability of the ion-exchange retention model. Various instrumental configurations were investigated to overcome problems associated with the use of organic modifiers in the eluent which caused compatibility issues with the electrolytically derived, and subsequently suppressed, eluent. The preferred configuration allowed the organic modifier stream to bypass the eluent generator, followed by subsequent mixing before entering the injection valve and column. Accurate elution prediction was achieved even when using 5-step eluent profiles with errors in retention time generally being less than 1% relative standard deviation (RSD) and all being less than 5% RSD. Peak widths for linear gradient separations were also modelled and showed good agreement with experimentally determined values.

The stochastic theory of chromatography and an equilibrium based approach were used for the prediction of peak shape and retention data of anions. This attempt incorporating the potential advantages of two different chromatographic phenomena for analytical purposes. It is an integrated method to estimate kinetic and thermodynamic properties for the same chromatographic run of ions. The stochastic parameters of eluted anions, such as the residence time of the molecule on the surface of the stationary phase, and the average number of adsorption steps were determined on the basis of a retention database of organic and inorganic anions (formate, chloride, bromide, nitrate, sulphate, oxalate, phosphate) obtained by using carbonate/bicarbonate eluent system at different pHs (9-11) and concentrations (7-13 mM). In the investigated IC system the residence times are much higher and the average number of sorption steps is somewhat smaller than in RP-HPLC. The simultaneous application of the stochastic and the multispecies eluent/analyte model was utilized to peak shape simulation and the retention controlling of various anions under elution conditions of practical importance. The similarities between the measured and the calculated chromatograms indicates the predictive and simulation power of the combined application of the stochastic theory and the multiple species eluent/analyte retention model.  相似文献

Abstract

Alkyl-modified silica (RSi) and polystyrenedivinylbenzene (PRP-1) stationary phases are compared for the chromatographic separation of inorganic analyte anions and cations using hydro-phobic ions of opposite charge as mobile phase additives. Tetra-alkylammonium salts were used for anion separations and alkyl sulfonate salts for cation separations. Two major equilibria influence the retention of analyte ions on PRP-1. These are: retention of the hydrophobic ion on PRP-1 and an ion exchange selectivity between the hydrophobic counterion and the analyte ion. When using RSi retention is also influenced by ion exchange at residual silanol groups, which act as weak cation exchange sites. Mobile and stationary phase variables that influence analyte retention are identified. Optimization of these provides favorable eluting conditions for the separation of inorganic ionic analytes. Of particular interest is the potential use of PRP-1 and RSi columns for the separation of inorganic cations; conditions for the separation of alkali metals and alkaline earths are discussed.  相似文献

Inorganic anions were separated on hydrophobic stationary phases such as triacontyl-functionalized silica. Eluent conditions were examined in detail, and iodate, nitrate, iodide, and thiocyanate could be separated by using aqueous solutions. The effect of the eluent concentration on the retention of analyte anions was examined for a wide range of sodium sulfate concentrations of up to 1 M. The retention factor of hydrophobic anions decreased with increasing sodium sulfate concentration in the lower concentration region, while it increased with increasing sodium sulfate concentration in the higher concentration region. The addition of a small amount of an organic substance such as acetonitrile and tetraethylene glycol increased the retention of iodide and thiocyanate, while the addition of alcohols decreased their retention. Operating at lower temperature also increased the retention of analyte anions. It was expected that inorganic anions were retained on the stationary phase via hydrophobic interactions. The retention mechanism was discussed, considering the results obtained.  相似文献

Separation of twelve enkephalins was investigated on a quaternary ammonium-embedded stationary phase (Stability BS-C23). Variation of buffer pH of the mobile phase highlighted the complex relationship between repulsive/attractive electrostatic interactions and the reversed-phase partitioning mechanism. The effect of three different anions employed as additives (phosphate, chloride and perchlorate) was examined at various concentrations and two pH values (acidic and neutral). At pH 2.5, an increase in the anion eluent concentration resulted in a higher retention factors of positively charged enkephalins. This effect was more pronounced when perchlorate ions were added to the mobile phase rather than phosphate and chloride ions, due to chaotropic and ion-pairing effects. In contrast, at pH 7.5, retention factors of negatively charged enkephalins decreased when these salts were added, due to an anion-exchange mechanism. Perchlorate caused a sharper decrease than chloride and phosphate anions did. The results presented here provide insight into the possible adjustment of retention and separation of peptides on a mixed-mode stationary phase (BS-C23) by a careful control of the buffer pH, the nature and concentration of anions, added to the buffer, and organic modifier content.  相似文献

Several procedures are available for simulating and optimising separations in ion chromatography (IC), based on the application of retention models to an extensive database of analyte retention times on a wide range of columns. These procedures are subject to errors arising from batch-to-batch variability in the synthesis of stationary phases, or when using a column having a different diameter to that used when the database was acquired originally. Approaches are described in which the retention database can be recalibrated to accommodate changes in the stationary phase (ion-exchange selectivity coefficient and ion-exchange capacity) or in the column diameter which lead to changes in phase ratio. The entire database can be recalibrated for all analytes on a particular column by performing three isocratic separations with two analyte ions. The retention data so obtained are then used to derive a "porting" equation which is employed to generate the required simulated separation. Accurate prediction of retention times is demonstrated for both anions and cations on 2mm and 0.4mm diameter columns under elution conditions which consist of up to five sequential isocratic or linear gradient elution steps. The proposed approach gives average errors in retention time prediction of less than 3% and the correlation coefficient was 0.9849 between predicted and observed retention times for 344 data points comprising 33 anionic or cationic analytes, 5 column internal diameters and 8 complex elution profiles.  相似文献

The rapid separation of inorganic anions on short monolithic columns permanently coated with a long chained zwitterionic carboxybetaine-type surfactant is shown. The surfactant, N-dodecyl-N,N-(dimethylammonio)undecanoate (DDMAU), was used to coat 2.5, 5.0 and 10 cm long reversed-phase silica monoliths, resulting in a permanent zwitterionic exchange surface when used with aqueous based eluents. The unique structure of the surfactant results in a charge double layer structure on the surface of the stationary phase, with strong internal anionic and weak external cationic exchange groups. The dissociation of the weak external carboxylic acid group acts to shield the inner anionic exchange site, resulting in substantial effective capacity changes with eluent pH. Utilising this effect with the application of an eluent pH gradient, simultaneously combined with eluent flow-rate gradients, very rapid simultaneous separations of both weakly retained anions and strongly retained polarisable anions was possible, with up to 10-fold decreases in overall run times. Coating stability and retention times under isocratic and isofluentic eluent conditions were shown to be reproducible over >450 repeat injections, with peak efficiency values averaging 29,000 N/m for the 2.5 cm column and 42,000 N/m for the 10 cm monolithic column, again under isocratic elution conditions.  相似文献

Summary The retention and separation of glucosinolates, as organic anions, were studied on a silica-based strong anion exchanger under isocratic elution conditions. All glucosinolates carry the same functional ionic group (-OSO 3 ), however they do not have the same retention in anion exchange chromatography. The plots of capacity factors of organic anions versus the reciprocal of eluent ion concentration show good linearity. From the slope and y-intercept data the major retention mechanisms are interpreted as ion exchange and reversed-phase interactions. The effects of nature and concentration of the eluent ion and the influence of organic modifier addition to the aqueous buffered mobile phase are also investigated. Direct and indirect UV detection were used. Our results open the way for the development of new systems for intact glucosinolate analysis which are easier to use than the present ion-pairing chromatographic method.  相似文献

A silica based amino stationary phase was prepared by immobilization of propargylamine on azide-silica via click chemistry. This readily prepared click amino stationary phase demonstrated good selectivity in separation of common inorganic anions under ion chromatography (IC) mode, and the triazole ring in combination with free amino group was observed to play a major role for separation of the anions examined. On the other hand, the stationary phase also showed good hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) properties in the separation of polar compounds including nucleosides, organic acids and bases. The retention mechanism was found to match well the typical HILIC retention.  相似文献

The concept of recently introduced Cinchona alkaloid-type zwitterionic chiral stationary phases (CSPs) is based on fusing key cation- and anion-exchange (CX, AX) moieties in one single low-molecular mass chiral selector (SO) with the resulting CSPs allowing enantiomer separations of a wide range of chiral ionizable analytes comprising acids, bases, and zwitterionic compounds. Herein, we report principal, systematic investigations of the ion-exchange-type retention mechanisms available with the novel zwitterionic CSPs in nonaqueous polar organic mode. Typical CX and AX processes, corresponding to the parent single ion exchangers, are confirmed also for zwitterionic CSPs. Also the mechanism leading to recognition and retention of zwitterions was found to be ion exchange mediated in a zwitterion-exchange (ZX) mode. In both AX and CX modes the additional ionizable group within the SO besides the site responsible for the respective ion-exchange process could be characterized as an intramolecular counterion (IMCI) that effectively participates in the ion-exchange equilibria and thus, contributes to solute elution. In the ZX mode both oppositely charged groups of the zwitterionic SO were found not only to be the sites for simultaneous ion pairing with the analyte but also functioned as IMCIs at the same time. The main practical consequences of the IMCI feature were significant reduction of the amounts and even elimination of acidic and basic additives required in the eluent systems to afford analyte elution while still providing faster analysis than the parent single ion-exchanger-type CSPs. The set of ten structurally different zwitterionic CSPs employed in this study facilitated the establishment of correlations between chromatographic behavior of the CSPs with particular SO elements, thereby supporting the understanding of the working principles of these novel packing materials on a molecular level.  相似文献
