We prove that the pseudovarieties of all finite semigroups, and of all aperiodic finii e semigroups are irreducible for join, for semidirect product and for Mal’cev product. In particular, these pseudovarieties do not admit maximal proper subpseudovarieties. More generally, analogous results are proved for the pseudovariety of all finite semigroups all of whose subgroups are in a fixed pseudovariety of groups H, provided th.it H is closed under semidirect product.  相似文献

When a compact connected Lie group acts smoothly on a manifold X with only connected isotropy subgroups of maximal rank, the action is completeley determined by the corresponding action of its Weylgroup WG on the fixed space XT of the maximal torus. Isotropy subgroups of such actions are determined.  相似文献

In [6] it is shown that the maximal subgroups of the free idempotent generated regular semigroup which is determined by the biordered set of a completely O-simple semigroup are free. In this note we shall extend this result to a wider class of semigroups.  相似文献

Convolution semigroups of states on a quantum group form the natural noncommutative analogue of convolution semigroups of probability measures on a locally compact group. Here we initiate a theory of weakly continuous convolution semigroups of functionals on a C*-bialgebra, the noncommutative counterpart of a locally compact semigroup. On locally compact quantum groups we obtain a bijective correspondence between such convolution semigroups and a class of C 0-semigroups of maps which we characterise. On C*-bialgebras of discrete type we show that all weakly continuous convolution semigroups of states are automatically norm-continuous. As an application we deduce a known characterisation of continuous conditionally positive-definite Hermitian functions on a compact group.  相似文献

We continue in this paper the study of locally minimal groups started in Außenhofer et al. (2010) [4]. The minimality criterion for dense subgroups of compact groups is extended to local minimality. Using this criterion we characterize the compact abelian groups containing dense countable locally minimal subgroups, as well as those containing dense locally minimal subgroups of countable free-rank. We also characterize the compact abelian groups whose torsion part is dense and locally minimal. We call a topological group G almost minimal if it has a closed, minimal normal subgroup N such that the quotient group G/N is uniformly free from small subgroups. The class of almost minimal groups includes all locally compact groups, and is contained in the class of locally minimal groups. On the other hand, we provide examples of countable precompact metrizable locally minimal groups which are not almost minimal. Some other significant properties of this new class are obtained.  相似文献

For factors of a Gaussian automorphismT determined by compact subgroups of the group of unitary operators acting onL 2 of the spectral measure ofT, we prove that the maximal spectral multiplicity is either 1 or infinity. As an application, we show that the maximal multiplicity of those factors an allL p, 1<p<+∞, is the same.  相似文献

In this note we determine when topological simplicity of a subsemigroup implies its simplicity. A measure theoretic approach is used. The main result is: In a locally compact completely simple semigroup whose maximal subgroups are compact, every subsemigroup which is either locally compact or of non-empty interior is completely simple. As a corollary, we have: In a compact semigroup, any topologically simple subsemigroup which is either locally compact or of non-empty interior is simple.  相似文献

Maximal semigroups dominated by a 0–1 matrix of a certain type are determined. The 0–1 matrices that dominate maximal bounded and maximal commuting semigroups are given. Also semigroup modules over maximal semigroups dominated by a 0–1 matrix are discussed.  相似文献

It is proved that, for a finite group with p-decomposable cofactors of the maximal subgroups, the quotient group by the Fitting subgroup is p-decomposable. This implies that every group all of whose maximal subgroups have nilpotent cofactors is metanilpotent.  相似文献

We prove that the e-variety CR(H), of all completely regular semigroups whose subgroups belong to some group variety H, is e-local; that is, every regular, locally completely regular semigroupoid [with subgroups fromH] divides a completely regular semigroup [with subgroups from H], in a ‘regular’ way. In a future paper with P.G. Trotter, this theorem will be applied to semidirect products of e-varieties and to e-free E-solid regular semigroups. A key role in the proof is played by the e-free semigroups in the e-variety CR(H). We provide a solution to the ‘word problem’ in these semigroups, in the style of that for free completely regular semigroups given by Kadourek and Polàk. The solution is derived from the author's work on free products of completely regular semigroups. Communicated by F. We study the subgroup structure of some two-generator p-groups and apply the obtained results to metacyclic p-groups. For metacyclic p-groups G, p > 2, we do the following: (a) compute the number of nonabelian subgroups with given derived subgroup, show that (ii) minimal nonabelian subgroups have equal order, (c) maximal abelian subgroups have equal order, (d) every maximal abelian subgroup is contained in a minimal nonabelian subgroup and all maximal subgroups of any minimal nonabelian subgroup are maximal abelian in G. We prove the same results for metacyclic 2-groups (e) with abelian subgroup of index p, (f) without epimorphic image ? D8. The metacyclic p-groups containing (g) a minimal nonabelian subgroup of order p 4, (h) a maximal abelian subgroup of order p 3 are classified. We also classify the metacyclic p-groups, p > 2, all of whose minimal nonabelian subgroups have equal exponent. It appears that, with few exceptions, a metacyclic p-group has a chief series all of whose members are characteristic.  相似文献

Weakly left ample semigroups are a class of semigroups that are (2,1)-subalgebras of semigroups of partial transformations, where the unary operation takes a transformation α to the identity map in the domain of α. It is known that there is a class of proper weakly left ample semigroups whose structure is determined by unipotent monoids acting on semilattices or categories. In this paper we show that for every finite weakly left ample semigroup S, there is a finite proper weakly left ample semigroup ? and an onto morphism from ? to S which separates idempotents. In fact, ? is actually a (2,1)-subalgebra of a symmetric inverse semigroup, that is, it is a left ample semigroup (formerly, left type A).  相似文献

The maximal ideal space ΔG of the measure algebra M(G) of a locally compact abelian group G is a compact commutative semitopological semigroup. In this paper we show that cℓ Ĝ the closure of Ĝ, the dual of G, in ΔG can contain maximal subgroups which are not locally compact. We have previously characterized the locally compact maximal subgroups of cℓ Ĝ as arising from locally compact topologies on G which are finer than the original topology. We establish the existence of maximal subgroups of various different natures in SL(n, ?). In particular, we prove that there are 2?0 maximal subgroups, we provide a maximal subgroup whose action on the projective space has no dense orbits, and we produce a faithful primitive permutation representation of PSL(n, ?) which is not 2-transitive.  相似文献

A topologized semigroup is called perfect if its multiplication is a perfect map (= a closed continuous mapping such that the inverse image of every point is compact). Thus a locally compact topological semigroup is perfect if and only if its multiplication is closed and each of its elements is compactly divided, that is, its divisors form a compact set. In the present paper we study compactly and non-compactly divided elements in the contexts of general locally compact semigroups, subsemigroups of groups, Lie semigroups and subsemigroups of Sl(2, ?).  相似文献

We prove that the liftings of a normal functor F in the category of compact Hausdorff spaces to the categories of (abelian) compact semigroups (monoids) are determined by natural transformations F(?)×F(?) → F(?×?) satisfying requirements that correspond to associativity, commutativity, and the existence of a unity. In particular, the tensor products for normal monads satisfy (not necessarily all) these requirements. It is proved that the power functor in the category of compacta is the only normal functor that admits a natural lifting to the category of convex compacta and their continuous affine mappings.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate when various Banach algebras associated to a locally compact group G have the weak or weak fixed point property for left reversible semigroups. We proved, for example, that if G is a separable locally compact group with a compact neighborhood of the identity invariant under inner automorphisms, then the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of G has the weak fixed point property for left reversible semigroups if and only if G is compact. This generalizes a classical result of T.C. Lim for the case when G is the circle group T.  相似文献

A relationship is considered between ergodic properties of a discrete dynamical system on a compact metric space Ω and characteristics of companion algebro-topological objects, namely, the Ellis enveloping semigroup E, the Köhler enveloping operator semigroup Γ, and the semigroup G being the closure of the convex hull of Γ in the weak-star topology on the operator space EndC*(Ω). The main results are formulated for ordinary (having metrizable semigroup E) semicascades and for tame dynamical systems determined by the condition cardE ? c. A classification of compact semicascades in terms of topological properties of the semigroups specified above is given.  相似文献
