We have mapped out a detailed phase diagram that shows the ground state structure of a spin-1 condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. We show that the interplay between the dipolar and the spin-exchange interactions induces a rich variety of quantum phases that exhibit spontaneous magnetic ordering in the form of intricate spin textures.  相似文献

We report on a study of the spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. By solving the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equations for this system, we find three ground-state phases. Moreover, we show that a substantial orbital angular momentum accompanied by chiral symmetry breaking emerges spontaneously in a certain parameter regime. We predict that all these phases can be observed in the spin-1 87Rb condensate by changing the number of atoms or the trap frequency.  相似文献

We propose an experiment which proves the possibility of spinning gaseous media via dipolar interactions in the spirit of the famous Einstein-de Haas effect for ferromagnets. The main idea is to utilize resonances that we find in spinor condensates of alkali atoms while these systems are placed in an oscillating magnetic field. A significant transfer of angular momentum from spin to motional degrees of freedom observed on resonance is a spectacular manifestation of dipolar effects in spinor condensates.  相似文献

We show that the effective theory of long wavelength low energy behavior of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC) with large dipole moments (treated as a classical spin) can be modeled using an extended non-linear sigma model (NLSM) like energy functional with an additional non-local term that represents long ranged anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction. Minimizing this effective energy functional we calculate the density and spin-profile of the dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in the mean-field regime for various trapping geometries. The resulting configurations show strong intertwining between the spin and mass density of the condensate, transfer between spin and orbital angular momentum in the form of Einstein-de Hass effect, and novel topological properties. We have also described the theoretical framework in which the collective excitations around these mean field solutions can be studied and discuss some examples qualitatively.  相似文献

We investigate the ground states of weakly interacting bosons in a rotating trap as a function of the number of bosons, N, and the average number of vortices, N(V). We identify the filling fraction nu identical with N/N(V) as the parameter controlling the nature of these states. We present results indicating that, as a function of nu, there is a zero temperature phase transition between a triangular vortex lattice phase, and strongly correlated vortex liquid phases. The vortex liquid phases appear to be the Read-Rezayi parafermion states.  相似文献

The ground state of dipolar bosons placed in an optical lattice is analyzed. We show that the modification of experimentally accessible parameters can lead to the realization and control of different quantum phases, including superfluid, supersolid, Mott insulator, checkerboard, and collapse phases.  相似文献

Globally symmetric spinor condensates in free space are argued not to support stable topological defects in either two or three dimensions. In the latter case, however, we show that a topological Skyrmion can be stabilized by forcing it to adopt certain density profiles. A sufficient condition for the existence of Skyrmion solutions in three dimensions is formulated and illustrated in simple examples. Our results pertain to Bose-Einstein condensation in 87Rb.  相似文献

An effective spin-orbit coupling can be generated in a cold atom system by engineering atom-light interactions. In this Letter we study spin-1/2 and spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, and find that the condensate wave function will develop nontrivial structures. From numerical simulation we have identified two different phases. In one phase the ground state is a single plane wave, and often we find the system splits into domains and an array of vortices plays the role of a domain wall. In this phase, time-reversal symmetry is broken. In the other phase the condensate wave function is a standing wave, and it forms a spin stripe. The transition between them is driven by interactions between bosons. We also provide an analytical understanding of these results and determine the transition point between the two phases.  相似文献

We study a dynamics of texture for a two-component spinor bose condensate. This is carried out by adopting a time dependent Landau-Ginzburg Lagrangian for a spinor order parameter. By using a polar form of the spinor order parameter, we obtain a field equation for the texture. In particular we consider a one dimensional model in which we can obtain analytic forms for the textures in terms of elliptic functions of several kinds. We find that these solutions are characterized by a modulus parameter, and changes in this parameter cause structural changes of texture.  相似文献

We propose an experimental scheme to create spin-orbit coupling in spin-3 Cr atoms using Raman processes. By employing the linear Zeeman effect and optical Stark shift, two spin states within the ground electronic manifold are selected, which results in a pseudospin-1/2 model. We further study the ground state structures of a spin-orbit-coupled Cr condensate. We show that, in addition to the stripe structures induced by the spin-orbit coupling, the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction gives rise to the vortex phase, in which a spontaneous spin vortex is formed.  相似文献

F = 1 spinor condensates initially prepared in a double-well potential are studied in the mean field approach. First, the decoupling of the dipolar oscillation and the internal dynamics is presented. Second, the dynamical consequences of a small seed of m = 0 atoms on a system with initially well separated m = 1 and −1 condensates is explored. It is found that such a seed drives the dynamics of the m = ±1 condensates, thus departing dramatically from the behavior of binary mixtures. Original Text ? Astro, Ltd., 2009. We study matter-wave solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates of ultracold gaseous atoms with spin degrees of freedom and present a class of exact solutions based on the inverse scattering method. The one-soliton solutions are classified with respect to the spin states. We analyze collisional effects between solitons in the same or different spin state(s), which reveals a very interesting possibility: we can manipulate the spin dynamics by controlling the parameters of colliding solitons.  相似文献

The dynamics of the collective spin for Bose-Einstein condensates with nonlinear interactions, is studied within the framework of the two-component spinor. We discuss the spin resonance when the system is submitted to a periodically-modulated magnetic field at the zero temperature. In this case, the nonlinearity parameter controls the critical change between a localized and a homogeneous spin state. When the temperature is finite – or a random magnetic field is considered – the movement of the collective spin is governed by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, from which the complete Fokker-Planck equation is derived. This equation is the essential tool to describe the time-evolution of the probability distribution function for the collective spin. The functional integral approach is used to solve analytically examples of BEC spin behavior in a static magnetic field at finite temperature. We show how such a method can lead effectively to the complete solution of the Fokker-Planck equation for this kind of problems.  相似文献

The Mermin-Ho and Anderson-Toulouse coreless vortices are demonstrated to be thermodynamically stable in ferromagnetic F = 1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates under rotation. We have carried out extensive calculations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations by assuming uniform density along the z axis and comparing the energies of other competing non-axis-symmetric or singular vortices. The phase diagram is thereby established in a plane of the rotation drive vs the total magnetization. Their stability is also checked by calculating collective modes based on the Bogoliubov equations.  相似文献

We investigate a novel aspect of rotational tunneling of the macroscopic spin for multicomponent spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The Lagrangian is deduced from the multi-component BEC system formalism, and is written in terms of spin coherent states. From the effective Hamiltonian for the collective spin, the tunneling rate is obtained through a functional integral of the spin variable. It is pointed out that the cooperative effect between the Zeeman energy and the anisotropic nature of the spin-dependent inter-atomic interaction plays a key role for occurrence of collective spin tunneling.  相似文献

We study the energetics of vortices and vortex lattices produced by rotation in the cyclic phase of F=2 spinor condensates. In addition to the familiar triangular lattice predicted by Tkachenko for 4He, many more complex lattices appear in this system as a result of the spin degree of freedom. In particular, we predict a magnetic-field-driven transition from a triangular lattice to a honeycomb lattice. Other transitions and lattice geometries are driven at constant field by changes in the temperature-dependent ratio of charge and spin stiffnesses, including a transition through an aperiodic vortex structure. Finally, we compute the renormalization of the ratio of the spin and charge stiffnesses from thermal fluctuations using a nonlinear sigma model analysis.  相似文献

We observe interlaced square vortex lattices in rotating dilute-gas spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). After preparing a hexagonal vortex lattice in a one-component BEC in an internal atomic state |1, we coherently transfer a fraction of the superfluid to a different state |2. The subsequent evolution of this pseudo-spin-1/2 superfluid towards a state of offset square lattices involves an intriguing interplay of phase-separation and -mixing dynamics, both macroscopically and on the length scale of the vortex cores, and a stage of vortex turbulence. The stability of the square structure is proved by its response to applied shear perturbations. An interference technique shows the spatial offset between the two vortex lattices. Vortex cores in either component are filled by fluid of the other component, such that the spin-1/2 order parameter forms a Skyrmion lattice.  相似文献

We analyze the atomic state obtained by photo-dissociation of a molecular condensate. We show that the dissociation process produces an atomic condensate in a squeezed state in analogy with the down-conversion process leading to squeezed light in quantum optics.  相似文献

We experimentally investigate and analyze the rich dynamics in F=2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates of 87Rb. An interplay between mean-field driven spin dynamics and hyperfine-changing losses in addition to interactions with the thermal component is observed. In particular, we measure conversion rates in the range of 10(-12) cm(3) s(-1) for spin-changing collisions within the F=2 manifold and spin-dependent loss rates in the range of 10(-13) cm(3) s(-1) for hyperfine-changing collisions. We observe polar behavior in the F=2 ground state of 87Rb, while we find the F=1 ground state to be ferromagnetic. We further see a magnetization for condensates prepared with nonzero total spin.  相似文献
