Recent advances in the integrated modeling of ELMy H-mode plasmas are presented. A new model for the H-mode pedestal and for the triggering of ELMs predicts the height, width, and shape of the H-mode pedestal and the frequency and width of ELMs. The model for the pedestal and ELMs is used in the ASTRA integrated transport code to follow the time evolution of tokamak discharges from L-mode through the transition from L-mode to H-mode, with the formation of the H-mode pedestal, and, subsequently, to the triggering of ELMs. Turbulence driven by the ion temperature gradient mode, resistive ballooning mode, trapped electron mode, and electron temperature gradient mode contributes to the anomalous thermal transport at the plasma edge in this model. Formation of the pedestal and the L-H transition is the direct result of flow shear suppression of anomalous transport. The periodic ELM crashes are triggered by MHD instabilities. Two mechanisms for triggering ELMs are considered: ELMs are triggered by ballooning modes if the pressure gradient exceeds the ballooning threshold or by peeling modes if the edge current density exceeds the peeling mode threshold. The BALOO, DCON, and ELITE ideal MHD stability codes are used to derive a new parametric expression for the peeling-ballooning threshold. The new dependence for the peeling-ballooning threshold is implemented in the ASTRA transport code. Results of integrated modeling of DIII-D like discharges are presented and compared with experimental observations. The results from the ideal MHD stability codes are compared with results from the resistive MHD stability code NIMROD.Presented at the Workshop Electric Fields Structures and Relaxation in Edge Plasmas, Nice, France, October 26–27, 2004.

A comparison of experimental measurements and theoretical studies of the quasicoherent (QC) mode, observed at high densities during enhanced D(alpha) (EDA) H mode in the Alcator C-Mod tokamak, are reported. The QC mode is a high frequency ( approximately 100 kHz) nearly sinusoidal fluctuation in density and magnetic field, localized in the steep density gradient ("pedestal") at the plasma edge, with typical wave numbers k(R) approximately 3-6 cm(-1), k(theta) approximately 1.3 cm(-1) (midplane). It is proposed here that the QC mode is a form of resistive ballooning mode known as the resistive X-point mode, in reasonable agreement with predictions by the BOUT (boundary-plasma turbulence) code.

A minimum set of equations based on the peeling-ballooning (P-B) model with nonideal physics effects (diamagnetic drift, E×B drift, resistivity, and anomalous electron viscosity) is found to simulate pedestal collapse when using the new BOUT++ simulation code, developed in part from the original fluid edge code BOUT. Nonlinear simulations of P-B modes demonstrate that the P-B modes trigger magnetic reconnection, which leads to the pedestal collapse. With the addition of a model of the anomalous electron viscosity under the assumption that the electron viscosity is comparable to the anomalous electron thermal diffusivity, it is found from simulations using a realistic high-Lundquist number that the pedestal collapse is limited to the edge region and the edge localized mode (ELM) size is about 5%-10% of the pedestal stored energy. This is consistent with many observations of large ELMs.

Edge plasma properties have been modified in the Saskatchewan Torus-Modified tokamak by means of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP). It has been found that the radial profiles of ion saturation current and floating potential in the edge region can be modified by an externally applied static (m?=?2, n?=?1) RMP field. An increase in the pedestal plasma density (n) and more negative electric field (Er) have been observed in the plasma edge region. It is believed that the RMP field altered the plasma transport in the edge and scrape-off layer regions, leading to a higher density pedestal and a potential drop in some cases. During the enhanced confinement phase, it is possible to identify a region where intermittent transport events, the so-called blobs, are created and the holes of lower density left behind.

Two-dimensional structures of the electrostatic potential, density, and flow velocity near the edge of a tokamak plasma are investigated. The model includes the nonlinearity in bulk-ion viscosity and turbulence-driven shear viscosity. For the case with the strong radial electric field (H mode), a two-dimensional structure in a transport barrier is obtained, giving a poloidal shock with a solitary radial electric field profile. The inward particle pinch is induced from this poloidal asymmetric electric field, and increases as the radial electric field becomes stronger. The abrupt increase of this inward ion and electron flux at the onset of L- to H-mode transition explains the rapid establishment of the density pedestal, which is responsible for the observed spontaneous self-reorganization into an improved confinement regime.

The confinement characteristics of large net-current-free plasmas heated by neutral-beam injection have been investigated in the Large Helical Device (LHD). A systematic enhancement in energy-confinement times from the scaling derived from the medium-sized heliotron/torsatron experiments have been observed, which is attributed to the edge pedestal. The core confinement is scaled with the Bohm term divided by the square root of the gyro radii. The comparative analysis using a dimensionally similar discharge in the Compact Helical System indicates gyro-Bohm dependence in the core and transport improvement in the edge region of LHD plasmas.

In Sternberg and Godyak (2003), the authors claim that the sheath edge obtained through asymptotic matching is the edge of the electron free ion sheath characterized by Godyak's "strong" electric field |E|=kT/sub e//(e/spl lambda//sub D/). I present a careful re-analysis of the same problem and show that the paper is incorrect. The "intermediate region" of asymptotic analysis has an extremely narrow validity range in potential space and does not contain the ion-electron sheath. Consequently, in asymptotic theory, the sheath edge is uniquely defined by the transition from the quasi-neutral plasma to the ion-electron sheath. It may equivalently be characterized by the Bohm criterion or by a "medium" electric field |E|/spl sim/kT/sub e//(eL/sup 3/5//spl lambda//sub D//sup 2/5/) mediating between strong sheath fields |E|/spl sim/kT/sub e//(e/spl lambda//sub D/) and weak plasma fields |E|/spl sim/kT/sub e//(eL).

Time-dependent two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations are carried out for tokamak plasmas with edge poloidal flow. Differently from conventional equilibrium theory, a density pedestal all around the edge is obtained when the poloidal velocity exceeds the poloidal sound speed. The outboard pedestal is induced by the transonic discontinuity, the inboard one by mass redistribution. The density pedestal follows the formation of a highly sheared flow at the transonic surface. These results may be relevant to the L-H transition and pedestal formation in high performance tokamak plasmas.

A variety of transport phenomena observed at laterally confined two- dimensional electron systems (2DES) prove the occurrence of non-local contributions to the electronic conductance in these systems. However, this non-local regime accompanied by a non-equilibrium population of the edge states with respect to the 2D bulk state is quenched at rather low values of current-driving electric fields. We analyse the non-Ohmic behaviour of SdH oscillations at GaAs/GaAlAs Quantum Hall conductors on the basis of a model including edge and bulk conduction and deduce the non-equilibrium population of edge and bulk states quantitatively. The spatial separation between edge and bulk states was changed by tilting the samples with respect to the magnetic field. The resulting angular dependences of equilibration parameters could be quantitatively explained by the change of the ratio of spin splitting to cyclotron energy being present in 2DES in tilted magnetic fields.PACS index numbers: 73.20.Dx; 73.40.Hm

Radial electric fields (E r) and their role in the establishment of edge transport barriers and improved confinement have been studied in the tokamaks TEXTOR-94 and CASTOR, where E r is externally applied to the plasma in a controlled way using a biased electrode, as well as in the tokamak T-10 where an edge transport barrier (H-mode) is obtained during electron-cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) of the plasma. The physics of radial currents was studied and the radial conductivity in the edge of TEXTOR-94 (R = 1.75 m, a = 0.46 m) was found to be dominated by recycling (ion-neutral collisions) at the last closed flux surface (LCFS) and by parallel viscosity inside the LCFS. From a performance point of view (edge engineering), such electrode biasing was shown to induce a particle transport barrier, a reduction of particle transport, and a concomitant increase in energy confinement. An H-mode-like behaviour can be induced both with positive and negative electric fields. Positive as well as negative electric fields were shown to strongly affect the exhaust of hydrogen, helium, and impurities, not only in the H-mode-like regime. The impact of sheared radial electric fields on turbulent structures and flows at the plasma edge is investigated on the CASTOR tokamak (R = 0.4 m, a = 0.085 m). A non-intrusive biasing scheme that we call "separatrix biasing" is applied whereby the electrode is located in the scrape-off layer (SOL) with its tip just touching the LCFS. There is evidence of strongly sheared radial electric field and E×B flow, resulting in the formation of a transport barrier at the separatrix. Advanced probe diagnosis of the edge region has shown that the E×B shear rate that arises during separatrix biasing is larger than for standard edge plasma biasing. The plasma flows, especially the poloidal E×B drift velocity, are strongly modified in the sheared region, reaching Mach numbers as high as half the sound speed. The corresponding shear rates ( 5×106 s-1) derived from both the flow and electric field profiles are in excellent agreement and are at least an order of magnitude higher than the growth rate of unstable turbulent modes as estimated from fluctuation measurements.During ECRH in the tokamak T-10 (R = 1.5 m, a = 0.3 m), a regime of improved confinement is obtained with features resembling those in the H-mode in other tokamaks. Using a heavy ion beam probe, a narrow potential well is observed near the limiter together with the typical features of the L-H transition. The time evolution of the plasma profiles during L-H and H-L transitions is clearly correlated with that of the density profile and the formation of a transport barrier near the limiter. The edge electric field is initially positive after the onset of ECRH. It changes its sign during the L-H transition and grows till a steady condition is reached. Similar to the biasing experiments in TEXTOR-94 and CASTOR, the experimentally observed transport barrier is a barrier for particles.

A quasisteady reversed shear plasma with a large bootstrap current fraction ( approximately 80%) has been obtained for the first time in the JT-60U tokamak. The shrinkage of reversed shear region was suppressed by the bootstrap current peaked at the internal transport barrier (ITB) layer and the ITBs at a large radius were sustained, which, by combination with an H-mode edge pedestal, resulted in a high confinement or 2.2 times the H-mode scaling for 6 times energy confinement time or 2.7 s. Furthermore, a full noninductive current drive was obtained by the bootstrap current and the beam driven current.

The recently discovered properties of the I-confinement Regime are explained as resulting from the excitation of a heavy particle mode. The theoretically predicted mode phase velocity in the direction of the electron diamagnetic velocity and the induced confinement of impurities at the edge of the plasma column have been confirmed by the experiments. The direction of the mode phase velocity is consistent with that (opposite) of the spontaneous rotation in the plasma core. The mode is of the “ion-mixing” type, in that it does not produce any electron transport across the fields and it involves significant poloidal magnetic field fluctuations.

A nominally undoped LiNbO3 crystal with a slightly broadened absorption edge is used to study beam coupling effects in the UV at 351 nm. At this wavelength the crystal exhibits a diffusion-dominated charge transport mechanism, which allows steady state beam amplification of up to 700 times, comparable to BaTiO3 in the visible. The used crystal material was characterized by an absorption coefficient =2.68 cm–1 at 351 nm and a maximal gain coefficient =13.94 cm–1. This high gain value in the UV can be attributed to a hole diffusion-dominated charge transport mechanism together with a low bulk photovoltaic effect. We measured photovoltaic fields of the order of 550 V/cm.

A new sustained high-performance regime, combining discrete edge and core transport barriers, has been discovered in the DIII-D tokamak. Edge localized modes (ELMs) are replaced by a steady oscillation that increases edge particle transport, thereby allowing particle control with no ELM-induced pulsed divertor heat load. The core barrier resembles those usually seen with a low (L) mode edge, without the degradation often associated with ELMs. The barriers are separated by a narrow region of high transport associated with a zero crossing in the E x B shearing rate.

The Aharonov-Bohm effect in submicron rings with narrow electron channels was studied in the range of magnetic fields from 0 to 15 T and temperatures from 0.1 to 10 K. It is found that the temperature dependences of the h/e-oscillation amplitude at low magnetic fields and in the situation of tunnel-coupled edge current states are different. The obtained experimental data are explained by the influence of Fermi-system chirality on the coherent transport in a ring interferometer.

We report the electric conductivity of three-dimensional (3D) nanoporous gold at low temperatures and in strong magnetic fields. It was found that topologically disordered 3D nanoporosity leads to extremely low magnetoresistance and anomalous temperature dependence as the characteristic length of nanoporous gold is tuned to be approximately 14 nm. This study underscores the importance of 3D topology of a nanostructure on electronic transport properties and has implications in manipulating electron transport by tailoring 3D nanostructures.
