Nanofiltration (NF) is an attractive technique for reducing F- concentrations to acceptable levels in drinking water, but commercial NF membranes such as NF 270 and NF 90 show minimal Cl-/F- selectivity. In contrast, simple layer-by-layer deposition of 4.5-bilayer poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS)/poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) films on porous alumina supports yields NF membranes that exhibit Cl-/F- and Br-/F- selectivities>3 along with solution fluxes that are >3-fold higher than those of the commercial membranes. Fluoride rejection by (PSS/PDADMAC)4PSS membranes, which is >70%, is independent of pressure over a range of 3.6 to 6.0 bar, suggesting that the primary transport mechanism in these films is convection. Moreover, the fact that Br-/F- selectivity is 12% higher than Cl-/F- selectivity suggests that discrimination among the monovalent ions is based on size (Stokes radius). Chloride/fluoride selectivities are essentially constant over Cl-/F- feed ratios from 1 to 60, so these separations will be viable over a range of conditions. Interestingly, PSS/protonated poly(allylamine) films show little Cl-/F- selectivity, and the selectivity of PSS/PDADMAC membranes is a strong function of the number of deposited layers, indicating that NF properties are very sensitive to film structure.  相似文献

We report the use of a variety of polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) as selective skins in composite membranes for nanofiltration (NF) and diffusion dialysis. Deposition of PEMs occurs through simple alternating adsorption of polycations and polyanions, and separations can be optimized by varying the constituent polyelectrolytes as well as deposition conditions. In general, the use of polycations and polyanions with lower charge densities allows separation of larger analytes. Depending on the polyelectrolytes employed, PEM membranes can remove salt from sugar solutions, separate proteins, or allow size-selective passage of specific sugars. Additionally, because of the minimal thickness of PEMs, NF pure water fluxes through these membranes typically range from 1.5 to 3 m3/(m2 day) at 4.8 bar. Specifically, to separate sugars, we employed poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS)/poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) films, which allow 42% passage of glucose along with a 98% rejection of raffinose and a pure water flux of 2.4 m3/(m2 day). PSS/PDADMAC membranes are also capable of separating NaCl and sucrose (selectivity of approximately 10), while high-flux chitosan/hyaluronic acid membranes [pure water flux of 5 m3/(m2 day) at 4.8 bar] may prove useful in protein separations.  相似文献

The Layer-by-layer deposition of positively and negatively charged macromolecular species is an ideal method for constructing thin films incorporating biological molecules. We investigate the adsorption of fibronectin onto polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films using optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy (OWLS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). PEM films are formed by adsorption onto Si(Ti)O2 from alternately introduced flowing solutions of anionic poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and cationic poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). Using OWLS, we find the initial rate and overall extent offibronectin adsorption to be greatest on PEM films terminated with a PAH layer. The polarizability density of the adsorbed protein layer, as measured by its refractive index, is virtually identical on both PAH- and PSS-terminated films; the higher adsorbed density on the PAH-terminated film is due to an adsorbed layer of roughly twice the thickness. The binding of monoclonal antibodies specific to the protein's cell binding site is considerably enhanced to fibronectin adsorbed to the PSS layer, indicating a more accessible adsorbed layer. With increased salt concentration, we find thicker PEM films but considerably thinner adsorbed fibronectin layers, owing to increased electrostatic screening. Using AFM, we find adsorbed fibronectin layers to contain clusters; these are more numerous and symmetric on the PSS-terminated film. By considering the electrostatic binding of a segmental model fibronectin molecule, we propose a picture of fibronectin adsorbed primarily in an end-on-oriented monolayer on a PAH-terminated film and as clusters plus side-on-oriented isolated molecules onto a PSS-terminated film.  相似文献

Nanofiltration (NF) membrane processes are attractive to remove multivalent ions. As ion retention in NF membranes is determined by both size and charge exclusion, negatively charged membranes are required to reject negatively charged ions. Layer-by-layer assembly of alternating polycation (PC) and polyanion layers on top of a support is a versatile method to produce membranes. Especially the polyelectrolyte (PE) couple polydiallyldimethylammoniumchloride and poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PDADMAC/PSS) is extensively investigated. This PE couple cannot form highly negatively charged membrane surfaces, due to interdiffusion and charge overcompensation of PDADMAC into the PSS layers, which limits the operational window to tailor membrane properties. We propose the use of asymmetric layer formation and show how combining two charge densities of one PC can produce negatively charged NF membranes. Starting from hollow fiber ultrafiltration supports coated with base layers of PDADMAC/PSS, they are coated with PDADMAC/PSS or poly(acrylamide-co-diallyldimethylammoniumchloride), P(AM-co-DADMAC)/PSS layers. P(AM-co-DADMAC) has a charge density of only 32% compared to 100% for PDADMAC. The particular novel membranes coated with P(AM-co-DADMAC) have a highly negatively charged surface and high permeabilities (7–19 L/[m2hbar]), with high retentions for Na2SO4 of up to 95%. These values position the developed membranes in the top range compared to commercial and other layer-by-layer membranes.  相似文献

This work examines the flux performance of organic solvents through a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite membrane. A selection of n-alkanes, i-alkanes and cyclic compounds were studied in deadend permeation experiments at pressures up to 900 kPa to give fluxes for pure solvents and mixtures between 10 and 100 l m−2 h−1. Results for the chosen alkanes and aromatics, and subsequent modelling using the Hagen–Poiseuille equation, suggest that solvent transport through PDMS can be successfully interpreted via a predominantly hydraulic mechanism. It is suggested that the mechanism has a greater influence at higher pressures and the modus operandi is supported by the non-separation of binary solvent mixtures and a dependency on viscosity and membrane thickness. The effects of swelling that follow solvent–membrane interactions show that the relative magnitudes of the Hildebrand solubility parameter for the active membrane layer and the solvent(s) are a good indicator of permeation level. Solvents constituting a group (e.g. all n-alkanes) induced similar flux behaviours when corrections were made for viscosity and affected comparable swelling properties in the PDMS membrane layer.  相似文献

The adsorption of organic compounds in aqueous solution on polymeric nanofiltration membranes is studied; this process is one of the most important fouling mechanisms influencing the flux and retention behavior of nanofiltration membranes. It is shown that the adsorption of dissolved organic compounds on polymeric nanofiltration membranes is comparable to that on activated carbon. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms are used to describe the relation between the adsorbed mass on the membrane and the equilibrium concentration of the organic compound in a single-compound solution. Based on these results, three models for the adsorption of solutions containing several compounds [i.e., the simple competitive adsorption model (SCAM), the model of Jain-Snoeyinck, and the model of Butler-Ockrent] were used to predict the adsorption behavior of an organic compound in an aqueous solution containing two compounds. The results of the three models were compared to experimental observations. It is shown that the SCAM allows a good prediction of the adsorption behavior.  相似文献

Alternating adsorption of polycations and polyanions on permeable supports provides a convenient and versatile method for preparing composite membranes with selective, ultrathin polyelectrolyte skins. Control over charge and composition in the polyelectrolyte skin allows highly selective separation of ions according to charge, size, or hydration energy.  相似文献

Positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) coupled with a slow positron beam was used to characterize in situ the layer structure and depth profile of the cavity size in thin film composite (TFC) polyamide nanofiltration (NF) membranes prepared by the interfacial polymerization method. Two techniques, using PAS coupled with a slow positron beam of Doppler broadening energy spectra (DBES) and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) designed to reveal the layer structure and the cavity sizes contained in a multilayer thin film composite NF membrane, were assessed. To the best knowledge of the authors, a characterization of the depth profile of cavities in NF membranes using PAS coupled with a slow positron beam has never been reported. The membranes selected have a composite structure containing three layers: a selective polyamide layer, a transition layer, and a porous support prepared by the phase inversion technique. Furthermore, the cavity size distribution in the selective top layer plays an important role in determining the performance of the NF membranes.  相似文献

The main objective of this study is the use of polymeric surfactants in polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coatings for the separation of the pharmaceutical substances acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs). AChEIs are used for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease and Myasthenia Gravis. In the open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) mode, the PEM coating is evaluated using nine AChEIs. Optimal conditions are established by altering several experimental parameters such as the pH of the background electrolyte (BGE), the anionic polymer for the PEM coating, the concentration of NaCl, which is used as an additive in the polymer deposition solutions, the number of bilayers, the deposition time, and the concentration of the polymeric surfactant. 25 mM NaH(2)PO(4).H(2)Ο and 25 mM Na(2)HPO(4) at pH 7 is used as BGE. Two bilayers of poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) and poly(sodium N-undecanoyl L-leucinate) provide a baseline separation of all nine analytes in less than 4.5 min. Run-to-run reproducibility studies are also performed, and the relative standard deviation values of the migration times of the nine-analyte peaks are less than 2%. In addition, day-to-day, week-to-week and capillary-to-capillary reproducibilities are evaluated, and the relative standard deviation values of the electroosmotic flow are less than 2%. Finally, using the PEM coating approach, we were able to perform more than 150 runs in the same column. Neither the addition of the polymeric surfactant to the mobile phase, nor the reconstruction of the coating was necessary.  相似文献

The adsorption properties of thermosensitive graft-copolymers are investigated with the aim of developing self-assembled multilayers from these copolymers. The copolymers consist of a thermoreversible main chain of poly(N-isopropylacrylamid) and a weak polyelectrolyte, poly(2-vinylpyridine), as grafted side chains. Zeta-potential, single particle light scattering and adsorption isotherms monitor the adsorption of the thermoreversible copolymers to precoated colloidal particles. The results show a smaller surface coverage for a larger density of grafted chains. The surface coverage is discussed in terms of surface charge density in the adsorbed monolayer. Taking into account the monolayer adsorption properties, conditions are developed for the multilayer formation from these copolymers. A low pH provides a sufficient charge density of the grafted chains to achieve a surface charge reversal of the colloids upon adsorption. The charge reversal after each adsorbed layer is monitored by zeta-potential and the increase of the thickness is determined by light scattering. Stable and reproducible multilayers are obtained. The results imply that the conformation of the thermosensitive component in multilayers depends strongly on the grafting density, where the polymer with a higher grafting density adsorbs in a flat conformation while that with a lower grafting density adsorbs with more loops.  相似文献

Microarray-based technology is in need of flexible and cost-effective chemistry for fabrication of oligonucleotide microarrays. We have developed a novel method for the fabrication of oligonucleotide microarrays with unmodified oligonucleotide probes on nanoengineered three-dimensional thin films that are deposited on glass slides by consecutive layer-to-layer adsorption of polyelectrolytes. Unmodified oligonucleotide probes were spotted and immobilized on these multilayered polyelectrolyte thin films (PET) by electrostatic adsorption and entrapment on the porous structure of the PET film. The PET provides higher probe binding capacity and thus higher hybridization signal than that of the traditional two-dimensional aminosilane and poly-L-lysine coated slides. Immobilized probe densities of 3.4 x 10(12)/cm2 were observed for microarray spots on PET with unmodified 50-mer oligonucleotide probes, which is comparable to the immobilized probe densities of alkyamine-modified 50-mer probes end-tethered on an aldehyde-functionalized slide. The study of hybridization efficiency showed that 90% of immobilized probes on PET film are accessible to target DNA to form duplex format in hybridization. The DNA microarray fabricated on PET film has wider dynamic range (about 3 orders of magnitude) and lower detection limit (0.5 nM) than the conventional amino- and aldehyde-functionalized slides. Oligonucleotide microarrays fabricated on these PET-coated slides also had consistent spot morphology. In addition, discrimination of single nucleotide polymorphism of 16S rRNA genes was achieved with the PET-based oligonucleotide microarrays. The PET microarrays constructed by our self-assembly process is cost-effective, versatile, and well suited for immobilizing many types of biological active molecules so that a wide variety of microarray formats can be developed.  相似文献

This paper describes the use of surface chemical modification to enhance the difference of the surface charge on a patterned polyelectrolyte multilayer, which can be used for selectively adsorbing functional materials. We fabricated a patterned multilayer by combining the layer-by-layer self-assembly technique and photolithography and taking advantage of the different solubility of polyelectrolyte multilayers of diazo resins (DAR)/poly(acrylic acid) before and after UV irradiation. This patterned surface can be used as a matrix for selective adsorption of small molecular dyes, such as Methylene Blue. However the difference in surface charge on the patterned surface was not enough when we used it to selectively adsorb polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles using electrostatic force as the driving force. Therefore, we modified the patterned surface by interfacial chemistry. After modification, the patterned polyelectrolyte multilayer can be used as a good matrix for selective adsorption of PS nanoparticles with both positive and negative charges.  相似文献

Alternating adsorption of polyanions and polycations on porous supports provides a convenient way to prepare ion-selective nanofiltration membranes. This work examines optimization of ultrathin, multilayer polyelectrolyte films for monovalent/divalent cation separations relevant to water softening. Membranes composed of five bilayers of poly(styrene sulfonate)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PSS/PAH) on porous alumina supports allow a solution flux of 0.85 m3/(m2 day) at 4.8 bar, and exhibit 95% rejection of MgCl2 along with a Na+/Mg2+ selectivity of 22. Similar results were obtained in Na+/Ca2+ separations. PSS/poly(diallyl-dimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) films permit higher fluxes than PSS/PAH systems due to the higher swelling of films containing PDADMAC, but the Mg2+ rejection by PSS/PDADMAC membranes is less than 45%. However, capping PSS/PDADMAC films with a bilayer of PSS/PAH yields Mg2+ rejections and Na+/Mg2+ selectivities that are typical of pure PSS/PAH membranes. Separation performance can be optimized through control over deposition conditions (pH and supporting electrolyte concentration) and the charge of the outer layer since Donnan exclusion is a major factor in monovalent/divalent cation selectivity. Streaming potential measurements demonstrate that the magnitude of positive surface charge increases with increasing concentrations of Mg2+ in solution or when the outer polycation layer is deposited from a solution of high ionic strength.  相似文献

Interfacial polymerization (IP) is a powerful technique for fabrication of thin film composite (TFC) membranes. The polymers used most often as support are polysulfone (PS) or polyethersulfone (PES). These supports have limited stability in organic solvents. In this work, microporous polypropylene (PP) flat film and hollow fiber membranes were used as a support to fabricate TFC membranes for nanofiltration by the IP technique. Porous polypropylene membranes can provide substantial chemical, pH, and solvent resistance and are therefore suitable as supports for fabricating TFC membranes functioning as solvent-stable nanofiltration membranes. The surface and the pore interior of polypropylene flat sheet and hollow fiber membranes were hydrophilized first by pre-wetting with acetone followed by oxidation with chromic acid solution. A standard procedure to successfully coat the hydrophilized flat film and hollow fiber membranes was developed next. The monomeric system chosen for IP was poly(ethyleneimine) and isophthaloyl dichloride. The TFC hollow fiber membranes were characterized by nanofiltration of safranin O (MW 351) and brilliant blue R (MW 826) dyes in methanol. Rejection values of 88% and 43% were achieved for brilliant blue R and safranin O, respectively at a transmembrane pressure of 413 kPa in the TFC hollow fiber membranes. Pressure dependences of the solvent flux and solute rejection of the TFC membranes were studied using the modified flat sheet membranes up to a pressure of 965–1241 kPa. Solvent flux increased linearly with an increase in the transmembrane pressure. Solute rejection also increased with an increase in the transmembrane pressure. All modified membranes were also characterized using scanning electron microscopy. Extended-term solvent stability of the fabricated membranes was studied in toluene; the membranes demonstrated substantial solvent stability in toluene.  相似文献

The azobenzene-containing polyanion PAC-azoBNS was alternately assembled with the polycation diazoresin (DAR) to construct photo-cross-linkable multilayer films of PAC-azoBNS/DAR that contain photolabile groups of azobenzene. Upon mild UV irradiation, the interaction between PAC-azoBNS/DAR multilayers was converted from electrostatic interaction to covalent bonds. Because of the free carboxylic acid groups presented in the film, the photo-cross-linked multilayer film favors the selective permeation of positively charged species. After photolysis of the photo-cross-linked PAC-azoBNS/DAR films with intense UV irradiation, azobenzene groups decompose to produce imine groups, and a photo-cross-linked robust film containing free carboxylic acid and imine groups was fabricated. The resultant film allows the permeation of negatively charged species and meanwhile shows a pH-switchable permselectivity for positively charged species. Because of the covalently cross-linking structure, the photolyzed cross-linked PAC-azoBNS/DAR film shows high reversible switching behavior and has high stability in solution with high ionic strength.  相似文献

The effect of gel layer thickness on salt separation of positively charged pore-filled nanofiltration membranes has been examined both theoretically and experimentally. The extended Nernst-Planck (ENP) equation coupled with the Teorell-Meyer-Sievers (TMS) model were used to calculate the pressure-driven sodium chloride rejections for membranes having gel densities in the range typically used in nanofiltration applications. It was found that salt rejection was dependent on membrane (gel-layer) thickness with salt rejections increasing rapidly with thickness up to 50–75 μm. Further increases in thickness beyond this point had a much smaller effect on salt rejection. The theoretical predictions were examined experimentally by preparing a series of membranes with cross-linked poly(3-acrylamidopropyl)-trimethylammonium chloride (PAPTAC) gels with varying densities within the pores of a thin microporous polyethylene (PE) support. The membranes were characterized by their polymer volume fractions (gel concentration), thicknesses and effective charge densities. The effect of membrane thickness was examined by using single and stacks of two membranes. The pure water fluxes and salt rejections of the membranes and membrane stacks were determined in the pressure range 50–550 kPa. The single salt rejections of the membranes which were very dependent on the thickness of the membrane or membrane stack, were fully in accord with the calculated salt rejections of the membranes.  相似文献

A streaming potential analyzer has been used to investigate the effect of solution chemistry on the surface charge of four commercial reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membranes. Zeta potentials of these membranes were analyzed for aqueous solutions of various chemical compositions over a pH range of 2 to 9. In the presence of an indifferent electrolyte (NaCl), the isoelectric points of these membranes range from 3.0 to 5.2. The curves of zeta potential versus solution pH for all membranes display a shape characteristic of amphoteric surfaces with acidic and basic functional groups. Results with salts containing divalent ions (CaCl2, Na2SO4, and MgSO4) indicate that divalent cations more readily adsorb to the membrane surface than divalent anions, especially in the higher pH range. Three sources of humic acid, Suwannee River humic acid, peat humic acid, and Aldrich humic acid, were used to investigate the effect of dissolved natural organic matter on membrane surface charge. Other solution chemistries involved in this investigation include an anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate) and a cationic surfactant (dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide). Results show that humic substances and surfactants readily adsorb to the membrane surface and markedly influence the membrane surface charge.  相似文献

In the past studies, electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes has proven to be a promising method for the preparation of polyelectrolyte multilayer membranes (PEMMs). Till now, this method was mainly used to assemble flat sheet and tubular membranes. Since hollow fiber membrane has some advantages such as high-packing density, self-contained mechanical support and hence the consequent economical superiority, this study therefore seeked to assemble inner skin hollow fiber PEMMs by using a dynamic LbL adsorption technique. The assembly process was successfully accomplished by alternatively dynamically filtrating polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) on a hydrolyzed hollow fiber polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane under a negative pressure condition. In the case of pervaporation separation of 95 wt.% ethanol–water mixture (50 °C), the membrane obtained with only 4.5 and 6.5 bilayers had separation factor of 245 and 1338 while the permeate fluxes were 290 and 120 g/(m2 h), respectively. The pervaporation separation behavior of various alcohol/water mixtures with the alcohols being t-butanol, 2-propanol and ethanol were also investigated. Finally, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy clearly confirms a uniform and defect-free layer formed on the inner surface of hollow fiber support. Since different polyelectrolyte pairs could be used to assemble PEMMs for different uses, it was expected that the dynamic negative pressure LbL adsorption technique could also potentially be used to prepare many types of PEMMs in other fields.  相似文献

Composite pervaporation membranes composed of an asymmetric polyamide-6 membrane and an ultrathin self-assembled polyelectrolyte separating layer are described. The supporting membrane was prepared from both an unmodified polyamide-6 and a comb-like polymer with carboxyl terminated polyamide-6 side chains. A high end group concentration was found to be advantageous for sufficient adhesion of the multilayer systems on the supports. Up to 20 layers were deposited onto the membrane surface by dipping the membranes in aqueous solutions containing oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. The polyanions used were poly(acrylic acid), poly(styrene sulfonic acid) and alginic acid. The polycations used were poly(diallyldimethylammoniumchloride), chitosan and poly(ethylenimine). Performance of these membranes depends strongly on the layer number and on the type of polyelectrolytes. In general, membranes modified with two weak polyelectrolytes of high charge density gave the best separation properties while those modified with strong polyelectrolytes of low charge density led to poorer separation properties. However, the highest separation factor (≥10,000) for a water/2-propanol mixture (12/88 w/w) at permeate flux of 300 g/m2h was obtained with six double layers consisting of poly(ethylenimine) and alginic acid. These composite membranes were stable over an operating period of at least 400 h.  相似文献
