We have investigated the bonding of water molecules to the surfaces of ZnS nanoparticles (approximately 2-3 nm sphalerite) using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). The activation energy for water desorption was derived as a function of the surface coverage through kinetic modeling of the experimental TPD curves. The binding energy of water equals the activation energy of desorption if it is assumed that the activation energy for adsorption is nearly zero. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of water adsorption on 3 and 5 nm sphalerite nanoparticles provided insights into the adsorption process and water binding at the atomic level. Water binds with the ZnS nanoparticle surface mainly via formation of Zn-O bonds. As compared with bulk ZnS crystals, ZnS nanoparticles can adsorb more water molecules per unit surface area due to the greatly increased curvature, which increases the distance between adjacent adsorbed molecules. Results from both TPD and MD show that the water binding energy increases with decreasing the water surface coverage. We attribute the increase in binding energy with decreasing surface water coverage to the increasing degree of surface under-coordination as removal of water molecules proceeds. MD also suggests that the water binding energy increases with decreasing particle size due to the further distance and hence lower interaction between adsorbed water molecules on highly curved smaller particle surfaces. Results also show that the binding energy, and thus the strength of interaction of water, is highest in isolated nanoparticles, lower in nanoparticle aggregates, and lowest in bulk crystals. Given that water binding is driven by surface energy reduction, we attribute the decreased binding energy for aggregated as compared to isolated particles to the decrease in surface energy that occurs as the result of inter-particle interactions.  相似文献

Rates of homogeneous nucleation of H2O droplets in a temperature range from 236.37 to 237.91 K and of D2O droplets from 241.34 to 242.33 K were measured. The single microdroplets consisted of pure H2O or D2O and were levitated in an electrodynamic balance. In comparison to H2O, D2O shows a stronger tendency to nucleate. Over the investigated temperature interval, D2O droplets need to be supercooled less by 1.1 K compared to H2O droplets in order to arrive at the same nucleation rate. This is in good agreement with the higher degree of intermolecular association in liquid D2O, a fact which has been well established previously both from theory and experimental studies.  相似文献

This paper reports on the structure and desorption dynamics of thin D2O ice overlayers (0.2-10 monolayers) deposited on serine- and serinephosphate- (with H+, Na+, Ca2+ counterions) terminated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The D2O ice overlayers are deposited on the SAMs at approximately 85 K in ultrahigh vacuum and characterized with infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). Reflection absorption (RA) spectra obtained at sub-monolayer D2O coverage reveal that surface modes, e.g. free dangling OD stretch, dominate on the serine SAM surface, whereas vibrational modes characteristic for bulk ice are more prominent on the serinephosphate SAMs. Temperature programmed desorption mass spectrometry (TPD-MS) and TPD-IRAS are subsequently used to investigate the energetics and the structural transitions occurring in the ice overlayer during temperature ramping. D2O ice (approximately 2.5 monolayers) on the serine SAMs undergoes a gradual change from an amorphous- to a crystalline-like phase upon increasing the substrate temperature. This transition is not as pronounced on the serine phosphate SAM most likely because of reduced mobility due to strong pinning to the surface. We show also that the energy of desorption for a sub-monolayer of D2O ice on serinephosphate SAM surfaces with a Na+ and Ca2+ counterions is equally high or even exceeds previously reported values for analogous high-energy SAMs.  相似文献

We present a theoretical study of infrared and Raman line shapes of polycrystalline and single crystal ice Ih, for both water and heavy water, at 1, 125, and 245 K. Our calculations involve a mixed quantum/classical approach, a new water simulation model with explicit three-body interactions, transition frequency and dipole maps, and intramolecular and intermolecular vibrational coupling maps. Our theoretical spectra are in reasonable agreement with experimental spectra (available only near the two higher temperatures). We trace the origins of the different spectral peaks to weak and strong intermolecular couplings. We also discuss the delocalization of the vibrational eigenstates in terms of the competing effects of disorder and coupling.  相似文献

The interaction of oxygen with preadsorbed hydrogen on thermally activated magnesium oxide has been studied by temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) method. It was found that oxygen at 450 K reacts with preadsorbed hydrogen and the resulting hydroxylation suppresses the adsorptive capacity of magnesia with respect to oxygen.

The 32% Co-3% MgO-ZSM (SiO2/Al2O3=38) system has been studied by means of temperature-programmed reduction, temperature-programmed desorption, and IR spectroscopy. The data from temperature-programmed reduction show that cobalt exists on the surface of the catalyst in the form of Co2+, CoO, Co3O4, and CoO·MgO solid solutions. Reduction of the sample results in the formation of a very inhomogeneous surface with four groups of sites.N. D. Zelinskii Institute of Organic Chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences, 117913 Moscow. Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) are used to investigate the crystallization kinetics and measure the excess free energy of metastable amorphous solid water films (ASW) of H(2)O and D(2)O grown using molecular beams. The desorption rates from the amorphous and crystalline phases of ASW are distinct, and as such, crystallization manifests can be observed in the TPD spectrum. The crystallization kinetics were studied by varying the TPD heating rate from 0.001 to 3 K/s. A coupled desorption-crystallization kinetic model accurately simulates the desorption spectra and accurately predicts the observed temperature shifts in the crystallization. Isothermal crystallization studies using RAIRS are in agreement with the TPD results. Furthermore, highly sensitive measurements of the desorption rates were used to determine the excess free energy of ASW near 150 K. The excess entropy obtained from these data is consistent with there being a thermodynamic continuity between ASW and supercooled liquid water.  相似文献

The interaction of Al2O3 and CeO2 thin films with sulfur dioxide (2.5 mbar) or with mixtures of SO2 with O2 (5 mbar) at various temperatures (30-400 degrees C) was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The analysis of temperature-induced transformations of S2p spectra allowed us to identify sulfite and sulfate species and determine the conditions of their formation on the oxide surfaces. Sulfite ions, SO3(2-), which are characterized by the S2p(3/2) binding energy (BE) of approximately 167.5 eV, were shown to be formed during the interaction of the oxide films with pure SO2 at temperatures < or =200 degrees C, whereas sulfate ions, SO4(2-), with BE (S2p(3/2)) approximately 169 eV were produced at temperatures > or =300 degrees C. The formation of both the sulfite and sulfate species proceeds more efficiently in the case of CeO2. The addition of oxygen to SO2 suppresses the formation of the sulfite species on both oxides and facilitates the formation of the sulfate species. Again, this enhancement is more significant for the CeO2 film than for the Al2O3 one. The sulfation of the CeO2 film is accompanied by a reduction of Ce(IV) ions to Ce(III) ones, both in the absence and in the presence of oxygen. It has been concluded that the amount of the sulfates on the CeO2 surface treated with the SO2 + O2 mixture at > or =300 degrees C corresponds to the formation of a 3D phase of the Ce(III) sulfate. The sulfation of Al2O3 is limited by the surface of the oxide film.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics (MD) calculations have been performed to study the ultraviolet (UV) photodissociation of D(2)O in an amorphous D(2)O ice surface at 10, 20, 60, and 90 K, in order to investigate the influence of isotope effects on the photodesorption processes. As for H(2)O, the main processes after UV photodissociation are trapping and desorption of either fragments or D(2)O molecules. Trapping mainly takes place in the deeper monolayers of the ice, whereas desorption occurs in the uppermost layers. There are three desorption processes: D atom, OD radical, and D(2)O molecule photodesorption. D(2)O desorption takes places either by direct desorption of a recombined D(2)O molecule, or when an energetic D atom produced by photodissociation kicks a surrounding D(2)O molecule out of the surface by transferring part of its momentum. Desorption probabilities are calculated for photoexcitation of D(2)O in the top four monolayers and are compared quantitatively with those for H(2)O obtained from previous MD simulations of UV photodissociation of amorphous water ice at different ice temperatures [Arasa et al., J. Chem. Phys. 132, 184510 (2010)]. The main conclusions are the same, but the average D atom photodesorption probability is smaller than that of the H atom (by about a factor of 0.9) because D has lower kinetic energy than H, whereas the average OD radical photodesorption probability is larger than that of OH (by about a factor of 2.5-2.9 depending on ice temperature) because OD has higher translational energy than OH for every ice temperature studied. The average D(2)O photodesorption probability is larger than that of H(2)O (by about a factor of 1.4-2.3 depending on ice temperature), and this is entirely due to a larger contribution of the D(2)O kick-out mechanism. This is an isotope effect: the kick-out mechanism is more efficient for D(2)O ice, because the D atom formed after D(2)O photodissociation has a larger momentum than photogenerated H atoms from H(2)O, and D transfers momentum more easily to D(2)O than H to H(2)O. The total (OD + D(2)O) yield has been compared with experiments and the total (OH + H(2)O) yield from previous simulations. We find better agreement when we compare experimental yields with calculated yields for D(2)O ice than when we compare with calculated yields for H(2)O ice.  相似文献

The reaction of CF3 radicals with H2O (D2O) has been studied over the range of 533–723 K using the photolysis and the pyrolysis of CF3I as the free radical source. Arrhenius parameters for the reactions where X = H or D, relative to CF3 radical recombination are given by where k/k is in cm3/2/mol1/2·s1/2 and θ = 2.303RT/cal/mol. The activation energy and the primary kinetic isotope effect have been compared with those derived from the BEBO method.  相似文献

Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) have been used to perform a detailed investigation of the adsorption of water on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) at 90 K. RAIRS shows that water is physisorbed on HOPG at all coverages, as expected. Experiments at higher surface temperatures show marked changes in the O-H stretching region of the spectrum which can be assigned to the observation of the amorphous to crystalline ice phase transition. The infrared signature of both phases of solid water has been determined on HOPG and can be used to identify the phase of the ice. TPD spectra show the desorption of multilayers of crystalline ice. At high exposures a small bump appears in the TPD spectrum, on the low temperature side of the main peak, which is attributed to the amorphous to crystalline phase transition. At very low exposures of water, it is possible to distinguish the desorption of water from two- and three-dimensional islands and hence to determine the growth mode of water on the HOPG surface. Isothermal TPD studies have also been performed and show that the desorption of water does not obey perfect zero-order kinetics. Desorption orders, derived directly from the TPD spectra, confirm this observation. Desorption energies and preexponential factors have also been determined for this adsorption system.  相似文献

The oxygen K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectrum of an ice film prepared by deposition of water vapor on a substrate at 100 K was measured in the surface-sensitive Auger yield mode. Five distinct peaks are revealed in the Fourier transform spectrum of the EXAFS data. The peaks are attributed to O-H bonds (with overlapping contributions from intramolecular covalent and intermolecular hydrogen bonds) as well as to intermolecular O...O scattering paths in the distance range of 1-7 A. The pattern of the longer O...O distances resembles that of a high-pressure crystalline modification of ice (ice II).  相似文献

The sound velocity in polycrystalline ice was measured as a function of pressure at room temperature to 100 GPa, through the phase field of ice VII and crossing the ice X transition, by Brillouin scattering in order to examine the elasticity, compression mechanism, and structural transitions in this pressure range. In particular, we focused on previously proposed phase transitions below 60 GPa. Throughout this pressure range, we find no evidence for anomalous changes in compressibility, and the sound velocities and elastic moduli do not exhibit measurable discontinuous shifts with pressure. Subtle changes in the pressure dependence of the bulk modulus at intermediate pressures can be attributed to high shear stresses at these compressions. The C(11) and C(12) moduli are consistent with previously reported results to 40 GPa and increase monotonically at higher pressures.  相似文献

The influence of surface morphology/porosity on the desorption kinetics of weakly bound species was investigated by depositing D2 on amorphous solid water (ASW) films grown by low temperature vapor deposition under various conditions and with differing thermal histories. A broad distribution of binding energies of the D2 monolayer on nonporous and porous ASW was measured experimentally and correlated by theoretical calculations to differences in the degree of coordination of the adsorbed H2 (D2) to H2O molecules in the ASW depending on the nature of the adsorption site, i.e., surface valleys vs surface peaks in a nanoscale rough film surface. For porous films, the effect of porosity on the desorption kinetics was observed to be a reduction in the desorption rate with film thickness and a change in peak shape. This can be partly explained by fast diffusion into the ASW pore structure via a simple one-dimensional diffusion model and by a change in binding energy statistics with increasing total effective surface area. Furthermore, the D2 desorption kinetics on thermally annealed ASW films were investigated. The main effect was seen to be a reduction in porosity and in the number of highly coordinated binding sites with anneal temperature due to ASW restructuring and pore collapse. These results contribute to the understanding of desorption from porous materials and to the development of correct models for desorption from and catalytic processes on dust grain surfaces in the interstellar medium.  相似文献

Adsorption of methyl chloride and coadsorption of CH3Cl and D2O on Pd(111) surfaces at T=100 K have been studied under ultrahigh-vacuum conditions using femtosecond sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy in the spectral regions of CH and OD bands. On the bare Pd(111) substrate, the CH3Cl coverage dependence of the resonant SFG signal is consistent with a progressive molecular rearrangement starting at half saturation followed by the growth of two ordered monolayers in which the molecular axes are perpendicular to the surface. When CH3Cl is adsorbed on top of predeposited D2O on Pd(111), the SFG signals as a function of the CH3Cl exposure indicate that methyl chloride is adsorbed onto D2O through hydrogen bonding. On the contrary when the adsorption order is reversed the strong decrease of the CH3 signal as a function of the D2O exposure is explained by assuming that water molecules penetrate inside the CH3Cl layers, leading to the formation of disordered CH3Cl clusters. In all cases a nonresonant contribution due to molecular adsorption is observed and it shows a dependence upon surface structure and coverage significantly different from that of the resonant vibrational bands.  相似文献

Solute-solvent interactions between acetate and D(2)O were investigated by vibrational spectroscopic methods. The vibrational dynamics of the COO asymmetric stretching mode in D(2)O was observed by time-resolved infrared (IR) pump-probe spectroscopy. The pump-probe signal contained both decay and oscillatory components. The time dependence of the decay component could be explained by a double exponential function with time constants of 200 fs and 2.6 ps, which are the same for both the COO asymmetric and symmetric stretching modes. The Fourier spectrum of the oscillatory component contained a band around 80 cm(-1), which suggests that the COO asymmetric stretching mode couples to a low-frequency vibrational mode with a wavenumber of 80 cm(-1). Based on quantum chemistry calculations, we propose that a bridged complex comprising an acetate ion and one D(2)O molecule, in which the two oxygen atoms in the acetate anion form hydrogen bonds with the two deuterium atoms in D(2)O, is the most stable structure. The 80 cm(-1) low-frequency mode was assigned to the asymmetric stretching vibration of the hydrogen bond in the bridged complex.  相似文献
