On hyper Kähler manifolds associated to Lagrangian Kähler submanifolds of

For any Lagrangian Kähler submanifold , there exists a canonical hyper Kähler metric on . A Kähler potential for this metric is given by the generalized Calabi Ansatz of the theoretical physicists Cecotti, Ferrara and Girardello. This correspondence provides a method for the construction of (pseudo) hyper Kähler manifolds with large automorphism group. Using it, an interesting class of pseudo hyper Kähler manifolds of complex signature is constructed. For any manifold in this class a group of automorphisms with a codimension one orbit on is specified. Finally, it is shown that the bundle of intermediate Jacobians over the moduli space of gauged Calabi Yau 3-folds admits a natural pseudo hyper Kähler metric of complex signature .

     

-quotients of quaternion-Kähler manifolds

The notion of symplectic reduction has been generalized to manifolds endowed with other structures, in particular to quaternion-Kähler manifolds, namely Riemannian manifolds with holonomy in . In this work we prove that the only complete quaternion-Kähler manifold with positive scalar curvature obtainable as a quaternion-Kähler quotient by a circle action is the complex Grassmannian .

     

Kaehler structures on

Let be a compact connected semi-simple Lie group, let , and let be an Iwasawa decomposition. To a given -invariant Kaehler structure on , there corresponds a pre-quantum line bundle on . Following a suggestion of A.S. Schwarz, in a joint paper with V. Guillemin, we studied its holomorphic sections as a -representation space. We defined a -invariant -structure on , and let denote the space of square-integrable holomorphic sections. Then is a unitary -representation space, but not all unitary irreducible -representations occur as subrepresentations of . This paper serves as a continuation of that work, by generalizing the space considered. Let be a Borel subgroup containing , with commutator subgroup . Instead of working with , we consider , for all parabolic subgroups containing . We carry out a similar construction, and recover in the unitary irreducible -representations previously missing. As a result, we use these holomorphic sections to construct a model for : a unitary -representation in which every irreducible -representation occurs with multiplicity one.

     

Kähler Differentials, the -functor, and a Theorem of Steinberg

Let be the functor on the category of unstable algebras over the Steenrod algebra constructed by Lannes. We use an argument involving Kähler differentials to show that preserves polynomial algebras. This leads to new and relatively simple proofs of some topological and algebraic theorems.

     

Commutative group algebras of -summable abelian groups

In this note we study the commutative modular and semisimple group rings of -summable abelian -groups, which group class was introduced by R. Linton and Ch. Megibben. It is proved that is -summable if and only if is -summable, provided is an abelian group and is a commutative ring with 1 of prime characteristic , having a trivial nilradical. If is a -summable -group and the group algebras and over a field of characteristic are -isomorphic, then is a -summable -group, too. In particular provided is totally projective of a countable length.

Moreover, when is a first kind field with respect to and is -torsion, is -summable if and only if is a direct sum of cyclic groups.

     

The -theory of toric manifolds

Toric manifolds, a topological generalization of smooth projective toric varieties, are determined by an -dimensional simple convex polytope and a function from the set of codimension-one faces into the primitive vectors of an integer lattice. Their cohomology was determined by Davis and Januszkiewicz in 1991 and corresponds with the theorem of Danilov-Jurkiewicz in the toric variety case. Recently it has been shown by Buchstaber and Ray that they generate the complex cobordism ring. We use the Adams spectral sequence to compute the -theory of all toric manifolds and certain singular toric varieties.

Equivalence of norms on operator space tensor products of -algebras

The Haagerup norm on the tensor product of two -algebras and is shown to be Banach space equivalent to either the Banach space projective norm or the operator space projective norm if and only if either or is finite dimensional or and are infinite dimensional and subhomogeneous. The Banach space projective norm and the operator space projective norm are equivalent on if and only if or is subhomogeneous.

     

Examples of non-Kähler Hamiltonian circle manifolds with the strong Lefschetz property

In this paper we construct six-dimensional compact non-Kähler Hamiltonian circle manifolds which satisfy the strong Lefschetz property themselves but nevertheless have a non-Lefschetz symplectic quotient. This provides the first known counterexamples to the question whether the strong Lefschetz property descends to the symplectic quotient. We also give examples of Hamiltonian strong Lefschetz circle manifolds which have a non-Lefschetz fixed point submanifold. In addition, we establish a sufficient and necessary condition for a finitely presentable group to be the fundamental group of a strong Lefschetz manifold. We then use it to show the existence of Lefschetz four-manifolds with non-Lefschetz finite covering spaces.

Hardy's theorem for the -dimensional Euclidean motion group

An uncertainty principle, due to Hardy, for Fourier transform pairs on says that if the function is ``very rapidly decreasing', then the Fourier transform cannot also be ``very rapidly decreasing' unless is identically zero. In this paper we state and prove an analogue of Hardy's theorem for the -dimensional Euclidean motion group.

     

The trace of jet space

The classical Whitney extension theorem describes the trace of the space of -jets generated by functions from to an arbitrary closed subset . It establishes existence of a bounded linear extension operator as well. In this paper we investigate a similar problem for the space of functions whose higher derivatives satisfy the Zygmund condition with majorant . The main result states that the vector function belongs to the corresponding trace space if the trace to every subset of cardinality , where , can be extended to a function and . The number generally speaking cannot be reduced. The Whitney theorem can be reformulated in this way as well, but with a two-pointed subset . The approach is based on the theory of local polynomial approximations and a result on Lipschitz selections of multivalued mappings.

     

The -resultant, singularities and the degree of unfaithfulness

We introduce the -resultant of two polynomials in one variable and show how it can be used to decide if and to find the singularities of the curve . The second criterion is used to give a very short proof of a special case of the epimorphism theorem of Abhyankar and Moh.

We prove that a Hausdorff sequential topological group with a point-countable -network is metrizable iff its sequential order is less than . In the non Hausdorff case metrizability may be replaced by -locally finite base.

This paper gives a new proof of a result of Geoghegan and Mihalik which states that whenever a contractible open -manifold which is not homeomorphic to is a covering space of an -manifold and either or and is irreducible, then the group of covering translations injects into the homeotopy group of .
