The paper is dealing with a research carried out at the Institute of Thermal-Fluid Dynamics to investigate the rewetting of a hot surface. The rewetting of the hot surface by spray cooling has been analyzed in previous works. After the droplet impingement, the liquid film falls along the surface, and rewetting by falling film takes place. The experiment was characterized by a 1-dimensional liquid spray, i.e., drops having a uniform, constant diameter, impinging on the heated surface. The cooling rate of the hot surface has been detected as a function of wall temperature, drop diameter and velocity, and impact point of the spray. The working feature of the spray is based on the varicose rupture of the liquid jet: imposing a periodic (symmetrical) perturbation with appropriate amplitude and frequency on the jet surface, the flow is “constrained” to break soon after leaving the nozzle, eventually obtaining constant diameter drops, depending on the nozzle diameter and liquid velocity. In this paper, previous results with spray cooling are compared with experimental runs in which the spray injection is replaced with a falling film all along the test section. The rewetting velocity has been calculated from the response of the thermocouples placed on the heated wall and using a digital image system based on the video image registered during the runs.  相似文献

This paper presents results of experimental and analytical investigation on molten alloy drop fragmentation in water pool. Emphasis is directed towards delineating the roles which melt to coolant heat transfer and melt solidification play in the fragmentation process. The strong impact of coolant temperature upon fragmentation process is addressed. A set of 23 drop fragmentation experiments were performed, in which 8 experiments employed a low melting point alloy, cerrobend-70 and 15 experiments using Pb–Bi eutectic alloy as drop fluid. The results show strong impact of coolant temperature on particle size distribution of the fragmented drops. A linear stability analysis of the interface between the two liquid fluids with thin crust growing between them, is performed. A modified dimensionless Aeroelastic number, for Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, is obtained and used as a criteria for fragmentation of molten drops penetrating into another liquid coolant media with lower temperature. The nondimensionalized mean diameter of the fragmented particles is correlated with the Aeroelastic number. Received on 26 March 2000  相似文献

Laser interferometry was used to investigate diffusive and convective mass transfer in a multicomponent fluid mixture with a liquid–liquid or liquid–gas interface. For this purpose, an immobile gas bubble or insoluble fluid droplet, having the shape of a short cylinder with a free lateral surface, was inserted into a thin liquid layer. In the case of non-uniform distribution of the dissolved surfactant component, the Marangoni convection near the drop/bubble was initiated by the surface tension inhomogeneities, depending on the surfactant concentration. The applied experimental techniques allowed us to study the structure and evolution of the convective flows and concentration fields in a liquid layer, which due to its small thickness were nearly two-dimensional. Making use of both the vertical and horizontal orientation of the liquid layer, we investigated the mass transfer process at different levels of the interaction between gravity and capillary forces. During the experiments, we detected new solutocapillary phenomena, which were found to be caused by oscillatory regimes of solutal convection occurring around air bubbles and chlorobenzene drops in heterogeneous aqueous solutions of alcohol with a vertical surfactant concentration gradient. The role of the oscillatory instability in the processes of drop saturation by the surfactant from its water solution and an inverse process of surfactant extraction from the drop into the surrounding homogeneous fluid (water) was determined. A reasonable explanation for the driving mechanisms of the discovered effects has been proposed.  相似文献

Impact of liquid drops on a rough surface comprising microgrooves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Impact of water drops on a stainless steel surface comprising rectangular shaped parallel grooves is studied experimentally. Geometric parameters of the surface groove structure such as groove depth, groove width and solid pillar width separating any two successive grooves were kept at 7.5, 136 and 66 μm, respectively. The study was confined to the impact of drops in inertia dominated flow regime with Weber number in the range 15–257. Experimental results of drop impact process obtained for the grooved surface were compared with those obtained for a smooth surface to elucidate the influence of surface grooves on the impact process. The grooves definitely influence both spreading and receding processes of impacting liquid drops. A more striking observation from this study is that the receding process of impacting liquid drops is dramatically changed by the groove structure for all droplet Weber number.  相似文献

An imaging technique that uses backlighting has been developed to measure drop sizes in annular two-phase flows with small concentrations of drops in the gas phase. Advantages over conventional photography are realized in that data collection and analysis times are shortened considerably, and consistent unbiased results can be expected. A magnification of 1.9 was used to measure drops above 50 μm. A drop size distribution was obtained for an air–water system as a superficial gas velocity of 30 m/s and a liquid flow of 20 g/s. The data are used to substantiate a theory for the rate of deposition. Received: 6 February 1997/Accepted: 3 February 1998  相似文献

The jet boiling heat transfer of a bar water–CuO particle suspensions (nanofluids) jet impingement on a large flat surface was experimentally investigated. The experimental results were compared with those from water. The quantificational effects of the nanoparticles concentration and the flow conditions on the nucleate boiling heat transfer and the critical heat flux (CHF) were investigated. The experimental data showed that the jet boiling heat transfer for the water–CuO nanofluid is significantly different from those for water. The nanofluids have poor nucleate boiling heat transfer compared with the base fluid due to that a very thin nanoparticle sorption layer was formed on the heated surface. The CHF for the nanofluid increased compared with that of water. The reasons were that the solid–liquid contact angle decreased due to a very thin sorption layer on the heated surface and the jet and agitating effect of the nanoparticles on the subfilm layer enhance supply of liquid to the surface.  相似文献

Numerical simulation of sedimenting deformable drops inside a vertical channel has been performed at finite Reynolds numbers. The channel is confined by two vertical walls in x-direction and is periodic in y- and z-directions. Results are obtained using a finite difference/front-tracking method. The main dimensionless parameters are the Reynolds number, the Bond number and ratio of the length of channel to the diameter of drops. The effect of these parameters on lateral migration of drops is investigated. It is found that the wall repulsion is the main mechanism of the lateral migration of the drop, and drop migrates toward the channel axis. When the Reynolds number is relatively low, two different lateral migration regimes are observed: migration with monotonic approach and migration with damped oscillations. These regimes are affected by the dimensionless parameters. When the Bond number increases, the oscillations of drop around the centerline of channel are stronger and drop reaches the channel centerline in a larger period. Results of lateral migration of one drop are consistent with perturbation theory, and two-dimensional numerical simulations performed by Feng et al. (1994). The drag coefficient has also been calculated, and effect of various parameters has been discussed. Two drops interaction is similar to that observed by Feng et al. (1994) for two-dimensional circular cylinders. Results are consistent with experiments performed by Wu and Manasseh (1998). Simulations of four sedimenting drops show that depending on the relative size of drops, they either fall in two rows or they form a single horizontal layer and settle with a unique velocity.  相似文献

The results from an experimental study of reduced-gravity two-phase flows are reported in this paper. The experiments were conducted in simulated reduced-gravity conditions in a ground-based test facility with a circular test section of 25 mm inner diameter. The flow conditions for which data were acquired lie in the dispersed droplet to slug flow transition and slug flow regime. Local data were acquired for 17 different flow conditions at three axial locations. The acquired data complement and extend those discussed in an earlier paper by the authors (Vasavada et al. in, Exp Fluids 43: 53–75, 2007). The radial profiles and axial changes in the local data are analyzed and discussed in this paper. The area-averaged data, in conjunction with the local data, are discussed to highlight important interaction mechanisms occurring between fluid particles, i.e., drops. The data clearly show the effect of progressive coalescence leading to formation of slug drops. Furthermore, the shape of slug drops in reduced-gravity conditions was observed to be different from that in normal-gravity case. The analyses presented here show the presence of drop coalescence mechanisms that lead to the formation of slug drops and transition from dispersed droplet flow to the slug flow regime. The most likely causes of the coalescence mechanism are random collision of drops driven by turbulence eddies in the continuous phase and wake entrainment of smaller drops that follow preceding larger drops in the wake region. Data from flow conditions in which the breakup mechanism due to impact of turbulent eddies on drops illustrate the disintegration mechanism.  相似文献

Steady propagation of the boundary of a vapor cavity in a layer of a metastable liquid along the heater surface is considered. The temperature and velocity of interface propagation are determined from the equations of conservation of mass, momentum, and energy in the neighborhood of the stagnation point of the vapor cavity and the condition of stability of steady motion of the interface. It is shown that a solution of these equations exists only if the liquid is heated above a threshold value. The calculated velocity of interface motion and the threshold value of temperature are in reasonable agreement with available experimental data for various liquids within wide ranges of saturation pressures and temperatures of the superheated liquid. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 49, No. 2, pp. 47–55, March–April, 2008.  相似文献

The role of incident shock waves in the initiation of vapor explosions in volatile liquid hydrocarbons has been investigated. Experiments were carried out on single droplets (1–2 mm diameter) immersed in a host fluid and heated to temperatures at or near the limit of superheat. Shocks generated by spark discharge were directed at previously nonevaporating drops as well as at drops boiling stably at high pressure. Explosive boiling is triggered in previously nonevaporating drops only if the drop temperature is above a threshold temperature that is near the superheat limit. Interaction of a shock with a stably boiling drop immediately causes a transition to violent unstable boiling in which fine droplets are torn from the evaporating interface, generating a two-phase flow downstream. On the previously nonevaporating interface between the drop and the host liquid, multiple nucleation sites appear which grow rapidly and coalesce. Overpressures generated in the surrounding fluid during bubble collapse may reach values on the same level as the pressure jump across the shock wave that initiated the explosive boiling. A simple calculation is given, which suggests that shock focusing may influence the location at which unstable boiling is initiated.  相似文献

The interaction of an electrically charged liquid-drop dispersed phase with a turbulent air-steam jet in a "water drop generator (capillary)-jettarget" system is investigated. The experimental conditions were as follows: volume flow of water through the capillary 0.01 cm3/s. capillary inside diameter 0.8 mm, electric potential applied to the capillary 20 kV. When the electric field is absent, condensation does not develop in the jet despite the existence of oversaturation zones. Two regimes of interaction between the charged dispersed phase and the jet are detected. The first regime (for ϕ<8 kV) is characterized by the regular launching of fairly large charged drops (0.5<r<2 mm) from the capillary and the absence of condensation in thejet. As the potential ϕ increases, the drop size decreases, whereas the drop charge increases. This regime made it possible to model the motion of individual charged clusters of different charge and size in aircraft engine jets. The second regime (ϕ>8 kV) is characterized by the irregular launching of drops from the capillary, drop dispersion with respect to size, a sharp increase in the target current, and the sudden appearance of condensation in the air-steam jet. The possible electrohydrodynamic and heterophase processes are qualitatively analyzed. Moscow, e-mail: vatazhin@ciam.ru.likhter@ciam.ru. Deformation and wobbling of a liquid drop immersed in a liquid matrix were studied under mild shear conditions for various viscosity ratios. In situ visualization experiments were conducted on a homemade transparent Couette cell incorporated to the Paar Physica MCR500 shear rheometer. The effect of drop or matrix elasticity was examined and was found to play a major role in both deformation and wobbling processes. Experimental results were compared to Jackson and Tucker (J Rheol 47:659–682, 2003), Maffettone and Minale (J Non-Newton Fluid Mech 78:227–241, 1998) and Yu and Bousmina (J Rheol 47:1011–1039, 2003) ellipsoidal models. It was found that the agreement between the Newtonian models and the experimental results required an increase in the drop viscosity. Such increment in viscosity was found to scale with the first normal stress difference.  相似文献

A physical model for explosive boiling of drops is presented. Loss of stability of the liquid-vapor interface results in occurrence of evaporation fronts. Their propagation in a metastable liquid is determined by the vapor recoil momentum. Detachment of drops from the interface is due to thermocapillary forces. The validity of the model is supported by comparison of calculations with experimental data. This paper presents a study on a novel water bubbling layer pressure drop and heat transfer experiment that was conducted to investigate the characteristics of pressure drop of air flow across the water bubbling layer. The attempt was to reduce the pressure drop while maintaining a higher value of the heat transfer coefficient. This type of heat transfer between water and merged tubes has potential application in evaporative cooling. To achieve the goal the pressure drop should be reduced by decreasing the bubble layer thickness through the water pump circulation. Pressure drops of air passing through the perforated plate and the water bubbling layer were measured for different heights of water bubbling layer, hole-plate area ratio of the perforated plate and the air velocity through the holes. Experimental data show that the increase of water bubbling layer height and air velocity both increase the pressure drop while the effect of the hole-plate area ratio of the perforated plate on the heat transfer coefficient is relatively complex. The measurements showed that even at a considerably lower height of water bubbling layer the heat transfer coefficient can exceed 5,000 W/m2-K. The heat transfer coefficients of 30 mm high water bubbling layer are higher than that of other higher water bubbling layers tested in the experiments  相似文献

The normal impact of single water drops onto a plane water surface was studied experimentally to reveal the amount of secondary drops produced from the rim of crown-like interfacial structure. Within the experimental ranges tested, the ratio of the total mass of secondary drops to the mass of primary drop was approximately within 0–1 and correlated well as the function of dimensionless parameter K that consisted of the impact Weber number We and the Ohnesorge number Oh (K = We Oh −0.4). The dependences of the number and the mean diameter of secondary drops on K and dimensionless film thickness were also investigated.  相似文献

The flow and heat transfer in an inclined and horizontal rectangular duct with a heated plate longitudinally mounted in the middle of cross section was experimentally investigated. The heated plate and rectangular duct were both made of highly conductive materials, and the heated plate was subjected to a uniform heat flux. The heat transfer processes through the test section were under various operating conditions: Pr ≈ 0.7, inclination angle ϕ = −60° to +60°, Reynolds number Re = 334–1,911, Grashof number Gr = 5.26 × 102–5.78 × 106. The experimental results showed that the average Nusselt number in the entrance region was 1.6–2 times as large as that in the fully developed region. The average Nusselt numbers and pressure drops increased with the Reynolds number. The average Nusselt numbers and pressure drops decreased with an increase in the inclination angle from −60° to +60° when the Reynolds number was less than 1,500. But when the Reynolds number increased to over about 1,800, the heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops were independent of inclination angles.  相似文献

The collision outcomes of immiscible drops with large surface tension difference, namely, a water drop and a diesel oil drop, were observed experimentally. In a near head-on collision between immiscible drops with large surface tension difference, an “overlaying” action for the drop of the smaller surface tension, i.e., the diesel oil drop, to go around the surface of the drop of the larger surface tension, i.e., the water drop, occurs during the collision. This overlaying action reduces the reflex energy for head-on collisions, making reflex separation more difficult to occur. At the same time, due to the immiscibility, the liquid bridge during stretching separation becomes narrower, which makes stretching separation easier to happen. No coalescence could be observed for a collision of Weber number greater than 60. In addition, compound drops are produced frequently.  相似文献

A fluid-dynamic model of two non-coalescing liquid drops of the same liquid, pressed against one another in the presence of thermocapillary convection, is proposed to correlate experimental results on the deformation of the drop surfaces, on the pressure distribution and on the thickness of the air film between the drops. The two-point boundary value problem for the Gauss–Laplace hydrostaticequation, subjected to the constant volume constraint, is solved by a fourth order Runge Kutta method to evaluatethe shapes of the drops for different values of the applied pressure jump across the surface exposed to a constant ambient pressure. The flow fields in the liquid drops and in the air layer are obtained by numerical solutions of the dynamic problem. Thenumerical results qualitatively agree with the experimental ones, explain why an air film could be created between the two drops and show that film thicknesses of some microns exist with excess pressures of the same order of magnitude of the pressure needed to deform the drops.  相似文献

Viscoelasticity in inkjet printing   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We investigate the effects of viscoelasticity on drop generation in inkjet printing. In drop-on-demand printing, individual ink ‘drops’ are ejected from a nozzle by imposed pressure pulses. Upon exiting the nozzle, the shape of each ‘drop’ is that of a nearly spherical bead with a long thin trailing ligament. This ligament subsequently breaks up under the Rayleigh instability, typically into several small droplets (known as satellite drops). These satellite drops can create unwanted splash on the target substrate and a reduction in printing quality. Satellite drops can potentially be eliminated by adding polymer to the ink; elastic stresses can act to contract the trailing ligament into the main drop before capillary breakup occurs. However, elasticity can also reduce the drop velocity and can delay or even prevent the break-off of the drop from the ink reservoir within the nozzle. To achieve optimal drop shape and speed, non-Newtonian parameters such as the polymer concentration and molecular weight must be chosen correctly. We explore this parameter space via numerical simulations, using the Lagrangian–Eulerian finite-element method of Harlen et al. (J Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech 60:81–104, 1995). Results are compared with experimental observations taken from real printheads.  相似文献

High-speed tomographic PIV was used to investigate the coalescence of drops placed on a liquid/liquid interface; the coalescence of a single drop and of a drop in the presence of an adjacent drop (side-by-side drops) was investigated. The viscosity ratio between the drop and surrounding fluids was 0.14, the Ohnesorge number (Oh = μd/(ρdσD)1/2) was 0.011, and Bond numbers (Bo = (ρ d  − ρ s )gD 2/σ) were 3.1–7.5. Evolving volumetric velocity fields of the full coalescence process allowed for quantification of the velocity scales occurring over different time scales. For both single and side-by-side drops, the coalescence initiates with an off-axis film rupture and film retraction speeds an order of magnitude larger than the collapse speed of the drop fluid. This is followed by the formation and propagation of an outward surface wave along the coalescing interface with wavelength of approximately 2D. For side-by-side drops, the collapse of the first drop is asymmetric due to the presence of the second drop and associated interface deformation. Overall, tomographic PIV provides insight into the flow physics and inherent three-dimensionalities in the coalescence process that would not be achievable with flow visualization or planar PIV only.  相似文献
