Consider two F q -subspaces A and B of a finite field, of the same size, and let A ?1 denote the set of inverses of the nonzero elements of A. The author proved that A ?1 can only be contained in A if either A is a subfield, or A is the set of trace zero elements in a quadratic extension of a field. Csajbók refined this to the following quantitative statement: if A ?1 ? B, then the bound |A ?1B| ≤ 2|B|/q ? 2 holds. He also gave examples showing that his bound is sharp for |B| ≤ q 3. Our main result is a proof of the stronger bound |A ?1B| ≤ |B|/q · (1 + O d (q ?1/2)), for |B| = q d with d > 3. We also classify all examples with |B| ≤ q 3 which attain equality or near-equality in Csajbók’s bound.  相似文献

The Khintchine recurrence theorem asserts that in a measure preserving system, for every set A and ε > 0, we have μ(AT?nA) ≥ μ(A)2 ? ε for infinitely many nN. We show that there are systems having underrecurrent sets A, in the sense that the inequality μ(AT?nA) < μ(A)2 holds for every nN. In particular, all ergodic systems of positive entropy have under-recurrent sets. On the other hand, answering a question of V. Bergelson, we show that not all mixing systems have under-recurrent sets. We also study variants of these problems where the previous strict inequality is reversed, and deduce that under-recurrence is a much more rare phenomenon than over-recurrence. Finally, we study related problems pertaining to multiple recurrence and derive some interesting combinatorial consequences.  相似文献

Then F is of the form F(A) = SA ? AT for all AA(H) and some S, TB(H), that is, F is a generalized derivation. We consider the following modified version of the Banach-Mazur distance of convex bodies in \(\mathbb{R}^n :d\left( {K,L} \right) = \inf \left\{ {\left| \lambda \right|:\lambda \in \mathbb{R},\tilde K \subset \tilde L \subset \lambda \tilde K} \right\}\), where the infimum is taken over all non-degenerate affine images \(\tilde K\) and \(\tilde L\) of K and L. Gordon, Litvak, Meyer and Pajor in 2004 showed that for any two convex bodies d(K,L) ≤ n, moreover, if K is a simplex and L = ?L then d(K,L) = n. The following question arises naturally: Is equality only attained when one of the sets is a simplex? Leichtweiss in 1959, and later Palmon in 1992 proved that if d(K,B 2 n ) = n, where B 2 n is the Euclidean ball, then K is the simplex. We prove the affirmative answer to the question in the case when one of the bodies is strictly convex or smooth, thus obtaining a generalization of the result of Leichtweiss and Palmon.  相似文献

Hadwiger’s transversal theorem gives necessary and suffcient conditions for a family of convex sets in the plane to have a line transversal. A higher dimensional version was obtained by Goodman, Pollack and Wenger, and recently a colorful version appeared due to Arocha, Bracho and Montejano. We show that it is possible to combine both results to obtain a colored version of Hadwiger's theorem in higher dimensions. The proofs differ from the previous ones and use a variant of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem. To be precise, we prove the following. Let F be a family of convex sets in ? d in bijection with a set P of points in ? d?1. Assume that there is a coloring of F with suffciently many colors such that any colorful Radon partition of points in P corresponds to a colorful Radon partition of sets in F. Then some monochromatic subfamily of F has a hyperplane transversal.  相似文献

Suppose S?? d is a set of (finite) cardinality n, whose complement can be written as the union of k convex sets. It is perhaps intuitively appealing that when n is large k must also be large. This is true, as is shown here. First the case in which the convex sets must also be open is considered, and in this case a family of examples yields an upper bound, while a simple application of a theorem of Björner and Kalai yields a lower bound. Much cruder estimates are then obtained when the openness restriction is dropped. For a given set S the problem of determining the smallest number of convex sets whose union is ? d ?S is shown to be equivalent to the problem of finding the chromatic number of a certain (infinite) hypergraph ? S . We consider the graph \(\mathcal {G}_{S}\) whose edges are the 2-element edges of ? S , and we show that, when d=2, for any sufficiently large set S, the chromatic number of \(\mathcal{G}_{S}\) will be large, even though there exist arbitrarily large finite sets S for which \(\mathcal{G}_{S}\) does not contain large cliques.  相似文献

The article is devoted to the theory of elliptic functions of level n. An elliptic function of level n determines a Hirzebruch genus called an elliptic genus of level n. Elliptic functions of level n are also of interest because they are solutions of the Hirzebruch functional equations. The elliptic function of level 2 is the Jacobi elliptic sine function, which determines the famous Ochanine–Witten genus. It is the exponential of the universal formal group of the form F(u, v) = (u2 ? v2)/(uB(v) ? vB(u)), B(0) = 1. The elliptic function of level 3 is the exponential of the universal formal group of the form F(u, v) = (u2A(v) ? v2A(u))/(uA(v)2 ? vA(u)2), A(0) = 1, A″(0) = 0. In the present study we show that the elliptic function of level 4 is the exponential of the universal formal group of the form F(u, v) = (u2A(v) ? v2A(u))/(uB(v) ? vB(u)), where A(0) = B(0) = 1 and for B′(0) = A″(0) = 0, A′(0) = A1, and B″(0) = 2B2 the following relation holds: (2B(u) + 3A1u)2 = 4A(u)3 ? (3A12 ? 8B2)u2A(u)2. To prove this result, we express the elliptic function of level 4 in terms of the Weierstrass elliptic functions.  相似文献

The problem of the partition-numbersJ ?(p, q), considered by Hadwiger and Debrunner for the family ?=C n of convex bodies, is extended to simplicial complexes and arbitrary families assuming only the validity of Helly’s theorem. We obtain results similar to those of Hadwiger and Debrunner. Further we show the existence of all partition-numbers for the family? = H nC of homothets of a convex body and we get new informations on the partition-numbers for the family of parallel rectangles.  相似文献

We study the relations between finitistic dimensions and restricted injective dimensions. Let R be a ring and T a left R-module with A = End R T. If R T is selforthogonal, then we show that rid(T A ) ? findim(A A ) ? findim( R T) + rid(T A ). Moreover, if R is a left noetherian ring and T is a finitely generated left R-module with finite injective dimension, then rid(T A ) ? findim(A A ) ? fin.inj.dim( R R)+rid(T A ). Also we show by an example that the restricted injective dimensions of a module may be strictly smaller than the Gorenstein injective dimension.  相似文献

We show that if the edge density of G(P, <1, ... , < r ) is strictly larger than 1 ? 1/(2h ? 2) r , then P contains h disjoint sets A 1, ... , A h such that A 1 < j ... < j A h holds for some 1 ≤ jr, and |A 1| = ... = |A h | = Ω(|P|). Also, we show that if the complement of G(P, <) has edge density strictly larger than 1 ? 1/(3h ? 3), then P contains h disjoint sets A 1, ... , A h such that the elements of A i are incomparable with the elements of A j for 1 ≤ i < jh, and |A 1| = ... = |A h | = |P|1?o(1). Finally, we prove that if the edge density of the complement of G(P, <1, <2) is α, then there are disjoint sets A, B ? P such that any element of A is incomparable with any element of B in both <1 and <2, and |A| = |B| > n 1?γ(α), where γ(α) → 0 as α → 1. Abstract functional operators are defined as elements of a C*-algebra B with a structure consisting of a closed C*-subalgebra A ? B and a unitary element T ? B such that the mapping \(\hat T:a \to TaT^{ - 1} \) is an automorphism of A and the set of finite sums \(\sum {a_k T^k } ,a_k \in A\), is norm dense in B.We give a new construction of a linear extension associated with the abstract weighted shift operator aT and obtain generalizations of known theorems about the relationship between the invertibility of operators and the hyperbolicity of the associated linear extensions to the case of abstract functional operators.  相似文献

In this note we consider the homogenization problem for a matrix locally periodic elliptic operator on R d of the form A ε = ?divA(x, x/ε)?. The function A is assumed to be Hölder continuous with exponent s ∈ [0, 1] in the “slow” variable and bounded in the “fast” variable. We construct approximations for (A ε ? μ)?1, including one with a corrector, and for (?Δ) s/2(A ε ? μ)?1 in the operator norm on L 2(R d ) n .
