It is well known that if is infinite compact Hausdorff and scattered (i.e., with no perfect subsets), then the Banach space of continuous functions on has complemented copies of , i.e., . We address the question if this could be the only type of decompositions of into infinite-dimensional summands for infinite, scattered. Making a special set-theoretic assumption such as the continuum hypothesis or Martin's axiom we construct an example of Mrówka's space (i.e., obtained from an almost disjoint family of sets of positive integers) which answers positively the above question.

We construct an example of a nonseparable Banach space which does not admit a support set.2 It is a consistent (and necessarily independent from the axioms of ZFC) example of a space C(K) of continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff K with the supremum norm. The construction depends on a construction of a Boolean algebra with some combinatorial properties. The space is also hereditarily Lindelöf in the weak topology but it doesn't have any nonseparable subspace nor any nonseparable quotient which is a C(K) space for K dispersed.  相似文献

A Banach space is said to have the Daugavet property if every operator of rank satisfies . We show that then every weakly compact operator satisfies this equation as well and that contains a copy of . However, need not contain a copy of . We also study pairs of spaces and operators satisfying , where is the natural embedding. This leads to the result that a Banach space with the Daugavet property does not embed into a space with an unconditional basis. In another direction, we investigate spaces where the set of operators with is as small as possible and give characterisations in terms of a smoothness condition.

We consider the classes of “Grothendieck-integral” (G-integral) and “Pietsch-integral” (P-integral) linear and multilinear operators (see definitions below), and we prove that a multilinear operator between Banach spaces is G-integral (resp. P-integral) if and only if its linearization is G-integral (resp. P-integral) on the injective tensor product of the spaces, together with some related results concerning certain canonically associated linear operators. As an application we give a new proof of a result on the Radon-Nikodym property of the dual of the injective tensor product of Banach spaces. Moreover, we give a simple proof of a characterization of the G-integral operators on C(K,X) spaces and we also give a partial characterization of P-integral operators on C(K,X) spaces.  相似文献

We study the presence of L-orthogonal elements in connection with Daugavet centers and narrow operators. We prove that if dens(Y)?ω1 and G:X?Y is a Daugavet center with separable range then, for every non-empty w?-open subset W of BX??, it follows that G??(W) contains some L-orthogonal to Y. In the context of narrow operators, we show that if X is separable and T:X?Y is a narrow operator, then given yBX and any non-empty w?-open subset W of BX?? then W contains some L-orthogonal u so that T??(u)=T(y). In the particular case that T?(Y?) is separable, we extend the previous result to dens(X)=ω1. Finally, we prove that none of the previous results holds in larger density characters (in particular, a counterexample is shown for ω2 under the assumption 2c=ω2).  相似文献

Let and be two infinite dimensional real Banach spaces. The following question is classical and long-standing. Are the following properties equivalent?

a) There exists a projection from the space of continuous linear operators onto the space of compact linear operators.

b) .

The answer is positive in certain cases, in particular if or has an unconditional basis. It seems that there are few results in the direction of a general solution. For example, suppose that and are reflexive and that or has the approximation property. Then, if , there is no projection of norm 1, from onto . In this paper, one obtains, in particular, the following result:

Theorem. Let be a real Banach space which is reflexive (resp. with a separable dual), of infinite dimension, and such that has the approximation property. Let be a real scalar with . Then can be equivalently renormed such that, for any projection from onto , one has . One gives also various results with two spaces and .

Scalarization method is an important tool in the study of vector optimization as corresponding solutions of vector optimization problems can be found by solving scalar optimization problems. Recently this has been applied by Du (2010) [14] to investigate the equivalence of vectorial versions of fixed point theorems of contractive mappings in generalized cone metric spaces and scalar versions of fixed point theorems in general metric spaces in usual sense. In this paper, we find out that the topology induced by topological vector space valued cone metric coincides with the topology induced by the metric obtained via a nonlinear scalarization function, i.e any topological vector space valued cone metric space is metrizable, prove a completion theorem, and also obtain some more results in topological vector space valued cone normed spaces.  相似文献

In order to extend the theory of optimal domains for continuous operators on a Banach function space X(μ) over a finite measure μ, we consider operators T satisfying other type of inequalities than the one given by the continuity which occur in several well-known factorization theorems (for instance, Pisier Factorization Theorem through Lorentz spaces, pth-power factorable operators …). We prove that such a T factorizes through a space of multiplication operators which can be understood in a certain sense as the optimal domain for T. Our extended optimal domain technique does not need necessarily the equivalence between μ and the measure defined by the operator T and, by using δ-rings, μ is allowed to be infinite. Classical and new examples and applications of our results are also given, including some new results on the Hardy operator and a factorization theorem through Hilbert spaces.  相似文献

The well-posedness of a large class of singular partial differential equations of neutral type is discussed. Here the term singularity means that the difference operator of such equations is nonatomic at zero. This fact offers many difficulties in applying the usual methods of perturbation theory and Laplace transform technique and thus makes the study interesting. Our approach is new and it is based on functional analysis of semigroup of operators in an essential way, and allows us to introduce a new concept of solutions for such equations. Finally, we study the well-posedness of a singular reaction-diffusion equation of neutral type in weighted Lebesgue's spaces.  相似文献

A study is made of two classes of product topologies on powers of spaces: the general box product topologies, and the general uniform product topologies. Some examples are given and some results are shown about the properties of these general product spaces. This is applied to show that certain spaces of continuous functions with the fine topology are homeomorphic to box product spaces, and certain spaces of continuous functions with the uniform topology are homeomorphic to uniform product spaces.  相似文献

This article is a continuation of a paper of the first author [V. Ferenczi, Uniqueness of complex structure and real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, Adv. Math. 213 (1) (2007) 462–488] about complex structures on real Banach spaces. We define a notion of even infinite-dimensional real Banach space, and prove that there exist even spaces, including HI or unconditional examples from [V. Ferenczi, Uniqueness of complex structure and real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, Adv. Math. 213 (1) (2007) 462–488] and C(K) examples due to Plebanek [G. Plebanek, A construction of a Banach space C(K) with few operators, Topology Appl. 143 (2004) 217–239]. We extend results of [V. Ferenczi, Uniqueness of complex structure and real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, Adv. Math. 213 (1) (2007) 462–488] relating the set of complex structures up to isomorphism on a real space to a group associated to inessential operators on that space, and give characterizations of even spaces in terms of this group. We also generalize results of [V. Ferenczi, Uniqueness of complex structure and real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, Adv. Math. 213 (1) (2007) 462–488] about totally incomparable complex structures to essentially incomparable complex structures, while showing that the complex version of a space defined by S. Argyros and A. Manoussakis [S. Argyros, A. Manoussakis, An indecomposable and unconditionally saturated Banach space, Studia Math. 159 (1) (2003) 1–32] provides examples of essentially incomparable complex structures which are not totally incomparable.  相似文献
