Fredholm theory in ordered Banach algebras

This paper illustrates some initial steps taken in the e?ort of unifying the theory of positivity in ordered Banach algebas (OBAs) with the general Fredholm theory in Banach algebras. We introduce here upper Weyl and upper Browder elements in an OBA relative to an arbitrary Banach algebra homomorphism and investigate the spectra corresponding to the sets of upper Weyl and upper Browder elements, which we shall refer to as the upper Weyl and upper Browder spectra, respectively.     

A class of archimedean lattice ordered algebras

This paper introduces a new class of lattice ordered algebras. A lattice ordered algebra A will be called a pseudo f-algebra if xy = 0 for all x, y in A such that x y is a nilpotent element in A. Dierent aspects of archimedean pseudo f-algebras are considered in detail. Mainly their integral representations on spaces of continuous functions, as well as their connection with almost f-algebras and f-algebras. Various characterizations of order bounded multiplicators on pseudo f-algebras are given, where by a multiplicator on a pseudo f-algebra A we mean an operator T on A such that xT(y) = yT(x) for all x, y in A. In this regard, it will be focused on the relationship between multiplicators and orthomorphisms on pseudo f-algebras.

Generalized inverses over Banach algebras

LetA be a matrix over a complex commutative unital Banach algebra. We give necessary and sufficient conditions forA to have a generalized inverse. A cofinal coloring theorem for partially ordered algebras

If P is a directed partially ordered algebra of an appropriate sort-e.g. an upper semilattice-and has no maximal element, then P has two disjoint subalgebras each cofinal in P. In fact, if P has cofinality then there exists a family of such disjoint subalgebras. A version of this result is also proved without the directedness assumption, in which the cofinality of P is replaced by an invariant which we call its global cofinality.This work was done while the first author was partly supported by NSF contract MCS 82-02632.     

On the peripheral spectrum of bounded positive semigroups on atomic Banach lattices

Generalizing a recent result of E.B. Davies [4], we show that generators of bounded positive C₀-semigroups on atomic Banach lattices with order continuous norm have trivial peripheral point spectrum. Triviality of the Peripheral Point Spectrum of Positive Semigroups on Atomic Banach Lattices

Generalizing a result of Keicher [4] we show that generators of positive C ₀-semigroups on super-atomic Banach lattices have trivial peripheral point spectrum provided they satisfy a certain growth condition.     

On the semi-continuity of generalized inverses in Banach algebras

The main purpose of this paper is to study the continuity of several kinds of generalized inverses of elements in a Banach algebra with identity. We first obtain a sufficient and necessary condition for the lower semi-continuity of reflexive generalized inverses as set-valued mappings. Based on this result, we characterize the continuity of the Moore-Penrose inverse in a C^∗-algebra and therefore, derive some new and well-known criteria in operator theory.     

Weakly almost periodic functionals on certain Banach algebras

For a Lau algebra A, we study the Banach space WAP(A) of all weakly almost periodic functionals on A to obtain some equivalent conditions for the existence of topological left invariant means on a topological left introverted subspace X of A contained in WAP(A). Finally, we consider relations between the existence of a topological left invariant mean on X and a common fixed point property.     

Group inverses and Drazin inverses over Banach algebras

For a matrix over a complex commutative unital Banach algebra, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of its group inverse, and more generally, its Drazin inverses. The conditions are easy to check and explicit formulas for the inverses are provided. Some properties of the inverses and an application to operator theory are discussed. This note is a continuation of an earlier work of the author.     

Recurrence relations for a Newton-like method in Banach spaces

The convergence of iterative methods for solving nonlinear operator equations in Banach spaces is established from the convergence of majorizing sequences. An alternative approach is developed to establish this convergence by using recurrence relations. For example, the recurrence relations are used in establishing the convergence of Newton's method [L.B. Rall, Computational Solution of Nonlinear Operator Equations, Robert E. Spectral mapping theorems for the upper Weyl and upper Browder spectra

Abstract

We discuss the spectral mapping properties of the upper Weyl and upper Browder spectra of an arbitrary ordered Banach algebra element.     

The projection onto the center of an ℓ-algebra

In a uniformly complete -algebra with unite>0 the principal band {e} ^dd generated bye is a projection band. We prove that the formula of A. R. Schep for the projection onto this band which holds in the -algebra of order bounded operators on a Dedekind complete vector lattice, in general defines a projection onto the commutant of {e} ^dd . We present some examples to show that the commutant may be strictly larger than the band {e} ^dd , and also conditions which guarantee equality.This paper was written during the fall semester of 1993 while the first author visited the Department of Mathematics of the University of Leiden as a guest of Dr. C. Weakly compact multipliers on group algebras

We study left multipliers on the second dual spaces L¹(G)″ and M(G)″. We answer a question of Ghahramani and Lau, showing that for non-compact G a non-zero left multiplier on these spaces cannot be weakly compact.     

A monotone iterative technique for stationary and time dependent problems in Banach spaces

An abstract monotone iterative method is developed for operators between partially ordered Banach spaces for the nonlinear problem Lu=Nu and the nonlinear time dependent problem u^′=(L+N)u. Under appropriate assumptions on L and N we obtain maximal and minimal solutions as limits of monotone sequences of solutions of linear problems. The results are illustrated by means of concrete examples.     

A CHARACTERIZATION OF COMPLEX LATTICE HOMOMORPHISMS ON BANACH LATTICE ALGEBRAS

On the spectral radius of positive operators on Banach sequence spaces

Banach algebras of structured matrix sequences

We discuss the asymptotic behavior of matrix sequences belonging to a special class of non-commutative Banach algebras and study, in particular, the stability, and more general the Fredholm property of such sequences. The abstract results are applied to finite sections of band-dominated operators, especially in the case l^p(Z), 1?p?∞.     

Representation theorems for Banach algebras
