In this paper groups in which the set Σ of the normal or self-normalizing subgroups is large will be studied. In particular it will be characterized locally graded groups satisfying the minimal condition on subgroups which do not belong to Σ and locally finite groups for which the set Σ is dense in the lattice of all subgroups.  相似文献

LetF be a class of groups andG a group. We call a set Σ of subgroups ofG aG-covering subgroup system for the classF (or directly aF-covering subgroup system ofG) ifGF whenever every subgroup in Σ is inF. In this paper, we provide some nontrivial sets of subgroups of a finite groupG which are simultaneouslyG-covering subgroup systems for the classes of supersoluble and nilpotent groups. We give some covering subgroup systems for the class of all p-nilpotent groups.  相似文献

In this paper, we redefine the Fox torus homotopy groups and give a proof of the split exact sequence of these groups. Evaluation subgroups are defined and are related to the classical Gottlieb subgroups. With our constructions, we recover the Abe groups and prove some results of Gottlieb for the evaluation subgroups of Fox homotopy groups. We further generalize Fox groups and define a group τ = [Σ(V×W⋃ *), X] in which the generalized Whitehead product of Arkowitz is again a commutator. Finally, we show that the generalized Gottlieb group lies in the center of τ, thereby improving a result of Varadarajan. __________ Published in Ukrains'kyi Matematychnyi Zhurnal, Vol. 57, No. 3, pp. 320–328, March, 2005.  相似文献

Let Σ be a set of polyhedra. A set Ω of polyhedra is said to be an element set for Σ if each polyhedron in Σ is the union of a finite number of polyhedra in Ω. We call each polyhedron of the element set Ω an element for Σ. In this paper, we determine one element set for the set Π of the Platonic solids, and prove that this element set is, in fact, best possible; it achieves the minimum in terms of cardinality among all the element sets for Π. We also introduce the notion of indecomposability of a polyhedron and present a conjecture in Sect. 3.  相似文献

Let Σ be a set of n-dimensional polytopes. A set Ω of n-dimensional polytopes is said to be an element set for Σ if each polytope in Σ is the union of a finite number of polytopes in Ω identified along (n − 1)-dimensional faces. In this paper, we consider the n-dimensional polytopes in general, and extend the notion of element sets to higher dimensions. In particular, we will show that in the 4-space, the element number of the six convex regular polychora is at least 2, and in the n-space (n ≥ 5), the element number is 3, unless n + 1 is a square number.  相似文献

Summary We study subposets of the lattice L_1(X) of all T1-topologies on a set X, namely Σt(X), Σ3(X) and Σlc(X), being respectively the collections of all Tychonoff, all T3 and all locally compact Hausdorff topologies on X, with a view to deciding which elements of these partially ordered sets have and which do not have covers, that is to say immediate successors, in the respective posets. In the final section we discuss the subposet Σ G of all Hausdorff group topologies on a group G.  相似文献

We introduce the concept of a Σ-bounded algebraic system and prove that if a system is Σ- bounded with respect to a subset A then in a hereditarily finite admissible set over this system there exists a universal Σ-function for the family of functions definable by Σ-formulas with parameters in A. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a universal Σ-function in a hereditarily finite admissible set over a Σ-bounded algebraic system. We prove that every linear order is a Σ-bounded system and in a hereditarily finite admissible set over it there exists a universal Σ-function.  相似文献

The topological center of the spectrum of the Weyl algebra W, i.e. the norm closure of the algebra generated by the set of functions , is characterized in a recent paper by Jabbari and Namioka (Ellis group and the topological center of the flow generated by the map , to appear in Milan J. Math.). By the techniques essentially used in the cited paper, the topological center of the spectrum of the subalgebra W k , the norm closure of the algebra generated by the set of functions , will be characterized, for all k∈ℕ. Also an example of a non-minimal dynamical system, with the enveloping semigroup Σ, for which the set of all continuous elements of Σ is not equal to the topological center of Σ, is given.  相似文献

The concept of a Σ-uniform structure is introduced. A condition is derived which is necessary and sufficient for a universal Σ-function to exist in a hereditarily finite admissible set over a Σ-uniform structure.  相似文献

The McLain groups are groups of finitary linear transformations that, besides being of considerable interest in their own right, constitute a most useful source of counterexamples to conjectures arising in the investigation of locally nilpotent groups. In this article it is shown that certain torsion-free McLain groups have subgroups “of periodic index” that are residually finite. This has a bearing on the question as to which McLain groups might embed in simple locally soluble-by-finite groups.  相似文献

Let T be a suitable system of classical set theory. We will show, that the Σ1 spectrum of T, i.e. the set of ordinals having good Σ1 definition in T is an initial segment of the ordinals. Received: 11 October 1999 / Published online: 12 December 2001  相似文献

The root system Σ of a complex semisimple Lie algebra is uniquely determined by its basis (also called a simple root system). It is natural to ask whether all homomorphisms of root systems come from homomorphisms of their bases. Since the Dynkin diagram of Σ is, in general, not large enough to contain the diagrams of all subsystems of Σ, the answer to this question is negative. In this paper we introduce a canonical enlargement of a basis (called an enhanced basis) for which the stated question has a positive answer. We use the name an enhanced Dynkin diagram for a diagram representing an enhanced basis. These diagrams in combination with other new tools (mosets, core groups) allow us to obtain a transparent picture of the natural partial order between Weyl orbits of subsystems in Σ. In this paper we consider only ADE root systems (i.e., systems represented by simply laced Dynkin diagrams). The general case will be the subject of the next publication.  相似文献

The maximal ideal space ΔG of the measure algebra M(G) of a locally compact abelian group G is a compact commutative semitopological semigroup. In this paper we show that cℓ Ĝ the closure of Ĝ, the dual of G, in ΔG can contain maximal subgroups which are not locally compact. We have previously characterized the locally compact maximal subgroups of cℓ Ĝ as arising from locally compact topologies on G which are finer than the original topology. We study final group topologies and their relations to compactness properties. In particular, we are interested in situations where a colimit or direct limit is locally compact, a k ω-space, or locally k ω. As a first application, we show that unitary forms of complex Kac-Moody groups can be described as the colimit of an amalgam of subgroups (in the category of Hausdorff topological groups, and the category of k ω-groups). Our second application concerns Pontryagin duality theory for the classes of almost metrizable topological abelian groups, resp., locally k ω topological abelian groups, which are dual to each other. In particular, we explore the relations between countable projective limits of almost metrizable abelian groups and countable direct limits of locally k ω abelian groups.  相似文献

Let K be a bounded closed convex subset of a real Banach space of dimension at least two. Then the set of the support points of K is pathwise connected and the set Σ1(K) of the norm-one support functionals of K is uncountable in each nonempty open set that intersects the dual unit sphere. In particular, the set Σ 1(K) is always uncountable, which answers a question posed by L. Zajíček.  相似文献

In a recent paper, the authors studied some algebraic hypersurfaces of the third order in the projective spacePG(5,q) and they called them ruled cubics, since they possess three systems of planes. Any two of these constitute a regular switching set and furthermore, if Σ is a given regular spread ofPG(5,q), one of the three systems is contained in Σ. The subject of this note is to prove, conversely, that every regular switching set (Φ, Φ′) with Φ ⊂ Σ is a ruled cubic and to construct, for a generic choice of the projective reference system inP G(5,q), the quasifield which coordinatizes the translation plane Π associated with the spread (Σ − Φ) ∪ Φ′. The planes Π, of orderq 3, are a generalization of the finite Hall planes.  相似文献

For a given boundary Γ in Rn consisting of arcs and vertices, with two or more arcs meeting at each vertex, we treat the problem of estimating the area density of a soap film-like surface Σ spanning Γ. Σ is assumed locally to minimize area, or more generally, to be strongly stationary for area with respect to Γ. We introduce a notion of total curvature (Γ) for such graphs, or nets, Γ. We show that 2π times the area density of Σ at any point is less than or equal to (Γ). For n=3, these density estimates imply, for example, that if (Γ)≤3.649π, then the only possible singularities of a piecewise smooth (M,0,δ)-minimizing set Σ are curves, along which three smooth sheets of Σ meet with equal angles of 120°.
