The temperature dependent adsorption of sulfur on TiO2(1 1 0) has been studied with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Sulfur adsorbs dissociatively at room temperature and binds to fivefold coordinated Ti atoms. Upon heating to 120°C, 80% of the sulfur desorbs and the S 2p peak position changes from 164.3±0.1 to 162.5±0.1 eV. This peak shift corresponds to a change of the adsorption site to the position of the bridging oxygen atoms of TiO2(1 1 0). Further heating causes little change in S coverage and XPS binding energies, up to a temperature of 430°C where most of the S desorbs and the S 2p peak shifts back to higher binding energy. Sulfur adsorption at 150°C, 200°C, and 300°C leads to a rich variety of structures and adsorption sites as observed with LEED and STM. At low coverages, sulfur occupies the position of the bridging oxygen atoms. At 200°C these S atoms arrange in a (3×1) superstructure. For adsorption between 300°C and 400°C a (3×3) and (4×1) LEED pattern is observed for intermediate and saturation coverage, respectively. Adsorption at elevated temperature reduces the substrate as indicated by a strong Ti3+ shoulder in the XPS Ti 2p3/2 peak, with up to 15.6% of the total peak area for the (4×1) structure. STM of different coverages adsorbed at 400°C indicates structural features consisting of two single S atoms placed next to each other along the [0 0 1] direction at the position of the in-plane oxygen atoms. The (3×3) and the (4×1) structure are formed by different arrangements of these S pairs.  相似文献

A surface preparation method with fine SiO2 particles in water is developed to flatten Si(0 0 1) surfaces on the nanometer scale. The flattening performance of Si(0 0 1) surfaces after the surface preparation method is investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. The observed surface is so flat that 95% of the view area (100 × 100 nm2) is composed of only three atomic layers, namely, one dominant layer occupying 50% of the entire area and two adjacent layers. Furthermore, a magnified image shows the outermost Si atoms regularly distributed along the 〈1 1 0〉 direction on terraces.  相似文献

The oxidation of aniline at Cu(1 1 0) surfaces at 290 K has been studied by XPS and STM. A single chemisorbed product, assigned to a phenyl imide (C6H5N(a)), is formed together with water which desorbs. Reaction with preadsorbed oxygen results in a maximum surface concentration of phenyl imide of 2.8 × 1014 mol cm−2 and a surface dominated by domains of three structures described by , and unit meshes. However, concentrations of phenyl imide of up to 3.3 × 1014 mol cm−2 were obtained from the coadsorption of aniline and dioxygen (300:1 mixture) resulting in a highly ordered biphasic structure with and domains. Comparison of the STM and XPS data shows that only half the phenyl imides at the surface are imaged. Pi-stacking of the phenyl rings is proposed to account for this observation.  相似文献

Room temperature (RT) adsorption of nitric oxide (NO) on Ir(1 1 1) was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). At low exposures, NO molecules can not be imaged by STM, because at RT the diffusion of NO is much faster than the STM scanning speed. At high exposures near the saturation coverage, however, a well-ordered 2 × 2 structure is observed. The coverage of the major 2 × 2 species is 0.25 and they can be assigned to the NO molecules adsorbed on the Ir ontop sites. A small number of less bright spots are assigned to nitrogen atoms produced by dissociation. Their number increases by annealing the NO-saturated surface at 380 K. A small number of another dissociation product, oxygen, are observed as black lines, indicating that the diffusion of oxygen atoms is fast. Scratch-like noise features were also detected by the STM, which suggests that a mobile precursor state exists, which was clearly shown by the effects of electron irradiation from the STM tip. These results are consistent with the previous molecular beam studies. Hopping of the 2 × 2 ordered NO species was frequently observed at the anti-phase domain boundaries and edges of the 2 × 2 islands.  相似文献

The formation mechanism of the 7×7 reconstruction on annealed Si(1 1 1) surfaces has been demonstrated at the atomic level. In situ observations of unreconstructed regions (‘1×1’) on terraces after rapid quenching to 380 °C were done using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) with a scanning speed of 1.7 s per frame. In the narrow ‘1×1’ regions, we imaged isolated single-faulted (F) halves of the dimer-adatom-stacking-fault (DAS) structure from “birth” to “death”. During “life”, the isolated single F-halves frequently changed their size. The size changes between odd-sized F-halves always took place through even-sized F-halves of intermediate sizes: 5×5-F↔6×6-F↔7×7-F↔8×8-F↔9×9-F↔10×10-F↔11×11-F↔12×12-F↔13×13-F, where the 5×5-F, 7×7-F and so forth are irregular-type structures of the odd-sized F-halves. Even-sized F-halves and the irregular-type structures are necessary in the size changes, whereas the regular-type structures have never been involved. Lifetimes of the 10×10-F, 8×8-F, and 6×6-F at 380 °C are about 10.5, 6, and 2-3 s, respectively, which are much shorter than those of the isolated irregular-type structures of the odd-sized F-halves. With the aid of room temperature STM images of a rapidly quenched surface, we determined the atomic structures of the even-sized F-halves. We have proposed a sequential size change (SSC) model, including undiscovered parts of the size changes ‘1×1’ ↔2×2-F↔3×3-F↔4×4-F↔5×5-F, as the formation and decay mechanism of isolated single F-halves in the ‘1×1’ region. The SSC model has the following sequence: ‘1×1’ ↔ 2×2-F↔3×3-F↔4×4-F↔5×5-F↔6×6-F↔7×7-F↔8×8-F↔9×9-F↔10×10-F↔11×11-F↔12×12-F↔13×13-F. It was found by collecting statistics of size-change directions that one of two equivalent sides of the irregular-type structures, which have a mirror symmetry, is involved in the size changes thus indicating that other parts of the F-halves remain unchanged. Based on such findings, we have proposed the atomic processes for bond-rearrangements in the SSC model. The bond-rearrangements proceed along one side of a triangular F-half by breaking the existing dimers and forming new dimers like a “zipper”. Proposed atomic processes of the zipper-like restructuring are illustrated by a ball-and-stick model. The reason for the appearance of the even-sized F-halves and the irregular-type structures of the odd-sized ones is discussed in terms of the energy barrier heights along a reaction path in the size change of single F-halves.  相似文献

Surfaces of 6H-SiC(0001) homoepitaxial layers deposited on vicinal (3.5° off (0001) towards [11 0]) and on-axis 6H---SiC wafers by chemical vapour deposition have been investigated using ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy. Undulating step configurations were observed on both the on-axis and the vicinal surfaces. The former surface possessed wider terraces than the latter. Step heights on both surfaces were 0.25 nm corresponding to single bilayers containing one Si and one C layer. After annealing at T>1100°C for 3–5 min in UHV, selected terraces contained honeycomb-like regions caused by the transformation to a graphitic surface as a result of Si sublimation. A model of the observed step configuration has been proposed based on the observation of the [ 110] or [1 10] orientations of the steps and energetic considerations. Additional deposition of very thin (2 nm) SiC films on the above samples by gas source molecular beam epitaxy was performed to observe the evolution of the surface structure. Step bunching and growth of 6H---SiC layers and formation of 3C---SiC islands were observed on the vicinal and the on-axis surfaces, respectively, and controlled by the diffusion lengths of the adatoms.  相似文献

The structure of the clean Ge(0 0 1) surface is locally and reversibly changed between c(4×2) and p(2×2) by controlling the bias voltage of a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) below 80 K. It shows hysteresis for the direction of the sample bias voltage change. The c(4×2) structure is observed with the sample bias voltage Vb?−0.7 V. This structure is maintained at Vb?0.7 V with increasing the bias voltage from −0.7 V. When Vb is higher than 0.8 V, the structure changes to p(2×2). This structure is then maintained at Vb?−0.6 V with decreasing the bias voltage from +0.8 V. The area of the structure change can be confined in the single dimer row just under the STM tip using a bias voltage pulse. In particular, the minimum transformed length is four dimers along the dimer row in the transformation from p(2×2) to c(4×2). The observed local change of the reconstruction with hysteresis is attributed to the energy transfer process from the tunneling electron to the Ge lattice in the local electric field due to the STM bias voltage. A phenomenological model is proposed for the structure changes. It is based on a cascade inversion of the dimer buckling orientation along the dimer row.  相似文献

We show that the control conditions in the feedback loop of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) affect the values of the surface texture parameters, including fractal characterization, when they are calculated from STM images of the surface. The main surface texture parameters (such as the r.m.s. roughness, kurtosis, skewness, and average wavelength) show a strong dependence on the conditions used in the feedback loop for imaging. Fractal character changes also with feedback parameters. The quality of the STM images can be measured quantitatively by using some of the surface texture parameters.  相似文献

By scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) and high-resolution core-level photoemission using synchrotron radiation, we have investigated the atomic structure and electronic properties of Sb-induced 2 × 1 reconstruction on Ge(1 1 1). Our results support well the zigzag-chain model proposed for this phase in the literature; in particular, the STM images visualize the Sb zigzag (Seiwatz) chain in a real space, and the STS I-V spectrum suggests this surface to be semiconducting, in good agreement with the atomic configuration proposed. However, a closer inspection of the STM results does not support the buckling of Sb chains reported in earlier studies. Moreover, the analysis of the Sb 4d core-level line shape of the (2 × 1) reconstruction shows that the bonding state of the Sb atoms is very similar, suggesting an unbuckled Seiwatz chain. In addition, the Ge 3d core-level emission reveals only one component, giving evidence for the ideal bulk-terminated structure of the Ge substrate.  相似文献

The adsorption process, molecular arrangement and protonation behavior of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of bipyridine thiol on Au(1 1 1) were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), with a view towards constructing a molecular ion sensor. When the bipyridine SAMs were immersed in a strong CF3SO3H solution for protonation of the bipyridine group, additional N(1s) XPS peaks were generated at higher binding peak positions where the origin of the peak was considered to be the N-H species. We further investigated the relationship between the immersion time for the SAMs and the probability of protonation. We observed a decrease in the probability of protonation with a longer immersion time for the SAMs. We consider that both the bipyridine molecular arrangements and the molecular density on the Au surface are crucial for controlling the probability of protonation based on the STM and XPS data.  相似文献

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to study the clean TaB2(0 0 0 1) surface and its reaction with O2. In agreement with previous studies, XPS indicates that the clean surface is boron terminated. The topmost boron layer shows a chemically shifted B 1s peak at 187.1 eV compared to a B 1s peak at 188.6 eV for boron layers below the surface. The 187.1-188.6 eV peak intensity ratio and its variation with angle between the crystal normal and the detector is well described by a simple theoretical model based on an independently calculated electron inelastic mean free path of 15.7 Å for TaB2. The dissociative sticking probability of O2 on the boron-terminated TaB2(0 0 0 1) surface is lower by a factor of 104 than for the metal-terminated HfB2(0 0 0 1) surface.  相似文献

Intermixing, growth, geometric and electronic structures of gold films grown on antiferromagnetic stacking body-centered-tetragonal manganese (0 0 1) films were studied by means of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy at room temperature in ultra-high vacuum. We found stable ordered c(2 × 2)-MnAu(0 0 1) alloy layers after depositing Au on pure Mn layers. Since at the fourth layer (5 × 23)-like Au reconstruction appears instead of the c(2 × 2) structure and local density of states peaks obtained on the c(2 × 2)-MnAu surface disappear, pure Au layers likely grow from the fourth layer.  相似文献

We have studied Si(0 0 1)-Ga surface structures formed at Ga coverages of slightly above 0.50 monolayer (ML) at 250 °C by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). 4 × 2-, 5 × 2-, and 6 × 2-Ga structures were observed in a local area on the surface. The 4 × 2-Ga structure consists of three protrusions, as observed in filled- and empty-state STM images. The characters of these structures are clearly different from those of other Si(0 0 1)-Ga structures. We also performed an ab initio calculation of the energetics for several possible models for the 4 × 2-Ga structure, and clarified that the three-orthogonal-Ga-dimer model is the most stable. Also, the results of comparing the simulated STM images and observation images at various bias voltages indicate that this structural model is the most favorable.  相似文献

Ge (1 0 0) wafers were implanted with 100 keV Mn+ ions with a dose of 2 × 1016 ions/cm2 at different temperatures, ranging from 300 to 573 K. The surface morphology of implanted samples, analyzed with scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy measurements, reveals for the 300-463 K implant temperature range the formation of a surface swelled and porous film, containing sponge-like structures. On the contrary, samples implanted in the 513-573 K temperature range present an atomically flat surface, with a roughness less than 1 nm, indicating that crystalline order has been preserved. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy depth profiling measurements indicate the presence of adsorbed oxygen in the porous layer of lower-temperature implanted samples, as well the presence of a large Mn concentration below the expected end of range for impinging ions. Mn and O concentrations at anomalously great depths are maximum in the 413 K implanted sample, indicating that the phenomenon of ion beam induced porosity is best favored at a well defined temperature.  相似文献

Based on the results of scanning tunneling microscopy studies of the reconstructed Si(5 5 12)-2 × 1 surface, its atomic structure has been found. It turns out that Si(5 5 12)-2 × 1 consists of four one-dimensional structures: honeycomb (H) chain, π-bonded H′ (π) chain, dimer-adatom (D/A) row, and tetramer (T) row. Its period is composed of three subunits, i.e., (i) (3 3 7) unit with a D/A row [D(3 3 7)], (ii) (3 3 7) unit with a T row [T(3 3 7)], and (iii) (2 2 5) unit with both a D/A and a T row. Two kinds of adjacent subunits, T(3 3 7)/D(3 3 7) and D(3 3 7)/(2 2 5), are divided by H chains with 2× periodicity due to buckling, while one kind of adjacent subunits, T(3 3 7)/(2 2 5), is divided by a π chain with 1× periodicity. Two chain structures, H and π chains, commute with each other depending upon the external stresses perpendicular to the chain, which is the same for two row structures, D/A and T rows. It can be concluded that the wide and planar reconstruction of Si(5 5 12)-2 × 1 is originates from the stress balance among two commutable chains and two commutable rows.  相似文献

Bias-voltage dependent images of Al0.2Ga0.8As-{1 1 0} are presented. The images show both the filled- and empty-states of the surface. Apart from voltage-dependent changes in the apparent direction of the atomic rows also observed for binary III-V semiconductors, bright and dark areas about 2 nm in diameter appear at small voltage in filled-states images, and small ridges along [−1 1 0] appear at small voltage in empty-states images. The spatial extent of the bright and dark areas observed in filled-states images is thought to be determined by the electron-electron interaction. It is also shown that when a given patch of Al0.2Ga0.8As-{1 1 0} surface is imaged simultaneously in the filled- and empty-states mode, the locations and spatial extent of the alloy-related minima (the “dark patches”) do not coincide. This casts doubt on the assumption that a locally decreased tunneling probability represents an increased local content of Al.  相似文献

In this paper we report the observations of the bilayer structures of octa-alkoxyl-substituted phthalocyanine formed with high stability on graphite surfaces through direct deposition from solutions. The high resolution scanning tunneling microscope (STM) images of the overlayer assembly display discernible shifts. The bilayer structures are simulated by molecular mechanics method and the calculated results agree well with the experimental observations, indicating that the observed overlayer shift could be attributed to the π-π interaction associated with phthalocyanine. The results suggest that the multilayer growth of PcOC8 is jointly affected by π-π interactions, especially together with Van der Waals interactions.  相似文献

We have investigated a room-temperature growth mode of ultrathin Ag films on a Si(111) surface with an Sb surfactant using STM in a UHV system. On the Sb-passivated Si surface, small sized islands were formed up to 1.1 ML. Flat Ag islands were dominant at 2.1 ML, coalescing into larger islands at 3.2 ML. Although the initial growth mode of Ag films on the Sb-terminated Si(111) surface was Volmer-Weber (island growth), the films were much more uniform than Ag growth on clean (Si(111) at the higher coverages. From the analysis of STM images of Ag films grown with and without an Sb surfactant, the uniform growth of Ag films using an Sb surfactant appears to be caused by the kinetic effects of Ag on the preadsorbed Sb layer. Our STM results indicated that Sb suppresses the surface diffusion of Ag atoms and increases the Ag-island density. The increased island density is believed to cause coalescence of Ag islands at higher coverages of Ag, resulting in the growth of atomically flat and uniform Ag islands on the Sb surfactant layer.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is used to investigate the (0 0 1) surface structure of Nb doped SrTiO3 single crystals annealed in ultra high vacuum (UHV). Atomically resolved images of the (2 × 2) reconstructed surface are obtained after annealing a chemically etched sample. With further annealing dotted row domains appear, which coexist with the (2 × 2) reconstruction. The expansion of these domains with further annealing gives rise to the formation of a TiO2 enriched c(4 × 4) reconstruction.  相似文献

Molybdenum was deposited in two steps (3 eq. ML and 1 eq. ML) on the light blue rutile TiO2(1 1 0) (1 × 1) surface at room temperature, each Mo deposition cycle being followed by an annealing up to 950-1000 K. This procedure was found to lead to formation of separated clusters having a size in very wide range (1-20 nm). Scanning tunneling microscopy showed a dependence of the cluster morphology as a function of the size. The scanning tunneling spectra of Mo clusters was studied as a function of cluster dimensions and discussed in comparison with photoelectron spectroscopy results previously obtained for homogeneous Mo films. The dI/dV curves do not display the valence band structure of deposited material, which could be explained by the Schottky barrier formation.  相似文献
