One-electron and multielectron contributions to the decay of transient states in the Cs/Cu(111) and (100) systems are studied by a joined wave-packet propagation and many-body metal response approach. The long lifetime of these states is due to the Cu L and X band gaps which reduce the electron tunneling between Cs and Cu. In the (111) case, the decay is mainly by inelastic e-e interaction, whereas in the (100) case, electron tunneling is dominating. This accounts very well for the experimental findings [Bauer et al., Phys. Rev. B 55, 10 040 (1997) and Ogawa et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 1931 (1999)].  相似文献

We have measured the Raman spectra of polycrystalline MgB2 from 25 to 1200 cm(-1). A superconductivity-induced redistribution in the electronic Raman continuum was observed. Two pair-breaking peaks appear in the spectra, suggesting the presence of two superconducting gaps. The measured spectra were analyzed using a quasi-two-dimensional model in which two s-wave superconducting gaps open on two sheets of Fermi surface. For the gap values we have obtained Delta(1) = 22 cm(-1) ( 2.7 meV) and Delta(2) = 50 cm(-1) ( 6.2 meV). Our results suggest that a conventional phonon-mediated pairing mechanism occurs in the planar boron sigma bands and is responsible for the superconductivity of MgB2.  相似文献

In this Letter, we report a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy study aiming to explore the adsorption properties of Au with respect to the thickness of supported MgO films. For different MgO film thicknesses (3 ML and 8 ML), we find significant differences in the distribution of Au adsorption sites and in the Au cluster geometry, in line with recent calculations and electron paramagnetic resonance experiments. On the surface of thick MgO films or unsupported MgO, Au adsorbs on O sites [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 146804 (2006)], and the equilibrium cluster geometry is three-dimensional. In contrast, on thin MgO films, the calculations predicted (i) a change of the preferred Au nucleation site [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 226104 (2005)] and (ii) a stabilization of two-dimensional Au cluster geometries [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 036106 (2006)].  相似文献

Experimental support is found for the multiband model of the superconductivity in the recently discovered system MgB(2) with the transition temperature T(c) = 39 K. By means of Andreev reflection, evidence is obtained for two distinct superconducting energy gaps. The sizes of the two gaps ( Delta(S) = 2.8 meV and Delta(L) = 7 meV) are, respectively, smaller and larger than the expected weak coupling value. Because of the temperature smearing of the spectra the two gaps are hardly distinguishable at elevated temperatures, but when a magnetic field is applied the presence of two gaps can be demonstrated close to the bulk T(c) in the raw data.  相似文献

The in-plane magnetic field penetration depth (lambda(ab)) in single-crystal La1.83Sr0.17CuO4 was investigated by muon-spin rotation (muSR). The temperature dependence of lambda(ab)(-2) has an inflection point around 10-15 K, suggesting the presence of two superconducting gaps: a large gap (Delta(1)(d)) with d-wave and a small gap (Delta(2)(s)) with s-wave symmetry. The zero-temperature values of the gaps at mu(0)H=0.02 T were found to be Delta(1)(d)(0)=8.2(1) meV and Delta(2)(s)(0)=1.57(8) meV.  相似文献

A large exchange splitting of the conduction band in ultrathin films of the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuO was determined quantitatively, by using EuO as a tunnel barrier and fitting the current-voltage characteristics and temperature dependence to tunneling theory. This exchange splitting leads to different tunnel barrier heights for spin-up and spin-down electrons and is large enough to produce a near-fully spin-polarized current. Moreover, the magnetic properties of these ultrathin films (<6 nm) show a reduction in Curie temperature with decreasing thickness, in agreement with theoretical calculation [R. Schiller, Phys. Rev. The linewidth of the first image state on Ag(100) was studied using two-photon photoemission spectroscopy. The width was found to be 35±9 meV in agreement with a recent time-resolved study (Schoenlein et al.: Phys. Rev. Lett.61, 2596 (1988)) but somewhat larger than the theoretical value of 10–20 meV (Echenique et al.: Phys. Rev. B35, 4529 (1987)).  相似文献

We report scanning tunneling spectroscopy imaging of the vortex lattice in single crystalline MgB2. By tunneling parallel to the c axis, a single superconducting gap (Delta=2.2 meV) associated with the pi band is observed. The vortices in the pi band have a large core size compared to estimates based on H(c2) and show an absence of localized states in the core. Furthermore, superconductivity between the vortices is rapidly suppressed by an applied field. These results suggest that superconductivity in the pi band is, at least partially, induced by the intrinsically superconducting sigma band.  相似文献

Engineered optical waveguide structures with a controlled photon tunneling rate are shown to provide an experimentally accessible optical system to test universal features of dynamic control of quantum mechanical decay [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 270405 (2001)]. Examples of deceleration and acceleration of photon tunneling, as well as of suppression of fractional decay, are presented for a periodically curved waveguide coupled to a semi-infinite waveguide array.  相似文献

We present far-infrared ellipsometric measurements of polycrystalline samples of the pnictide superconductor RFeAsO0.82F0.18 (R=Nd and Sm). We find evidence that the electronic properties are strongly anisotropic such that the optical spectra are dominated by the weakly conducting c-axis response similar to the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. We deduce an upper limit of the c-axis superconducting plasma frequency of omega pl,c(SC)< or =260 cm(-1) corresponding to a lower limit of the c-axis magnetic penetration depth of lambda c > or =6 microm and lambda c/lambda ab > or =30 as compared to lambda ab=185 nm from muon spin rotation [A. Drew, arXiv:0805.1042 [Phys. Rev. Lett. (to be published)]]. We also observe a gaplike suppression of the conductivity in the superconducting state with a shoulderlike feature at omegaSC* approximately 300 cm(-1) and spectral shape which is consistent with an unconventional order parameter with 2Delta approximately omegaSC* approximately 37 meV.  相似文献

Control of optical tunneling via modulation of the coupling to the continuum is experimentally reported in femtosecond laser written waveguide arrays. The experiment demonstrates for optical tunneling in photonic lattices the universal mechanism of decay control recently proposed for quantum systems by Kofman and Kurizki [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 270405 (2001)]. In particular, we prove that the formation of a dressed discrete-continuum bound state in the regime of fractional decay can be suppressed by dynamic modulation of discrete-to-continuum coupling.  相似文献

We show that a quantum Hall bilayer with the total filling nu = 1 should exhibit a dynamical regime similar to the flux flow in large Josephson junctions. This analogy may explain a conspicuous peak in the interlayer tunneling conductance [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5808 (2000)]. The flux flow is likely to be spatiotemporally chaotic at low-bias voltage, which will manifest itself through broadband noise. The peak position can be controlled by an in-plane magnetic field.  相似文献

We present a generalization of the classical Wang-Landau algorithm [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 2050 (2001)]] to quantum systems. The algorithm proceeds by stochastically evaluating the coefficients of a high temperature series expansion or a finite temperature perturbation expansion to arbitrary order. Similar to their classical counterpart, the algorithms are efficient at thermal and quantum phase transitions, greatly reducing the tunneling problem at first order phase transitions, and allow the direct calculation of the free energy and entropy.  相似文献

We demonstrate that the statistical behavior of random line shapes of single tetra-tert-butylterrylene chromophores embedded in an amorphous polyisobutylene matrix at T=2 K is described by Lévy statistics as predicted theoretically by Barkai, Silbey, and Zumofen [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5339 (2000)]. This behavior is a manifestation of the long-range interaction between two-level systems in the glass and the single molecule. A universal amplitude ratio is investigated, which shows that the standard tunneling model assumptions are compatible with the experimental data.  相似文献

Utilizing a microwave setup, we experimentally verify our recently developed theory of energy squeezing and tunneling [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 157403 (2006)10.1103/PhysRevLett.97.157403] through an ultranarrow waveguide channel that mimics zero-permittivity properties. Exploiting the infinite phase velocity supported by a waveguide transition section at cutoff, we test our theory of tunneling in this zero-permittivity region without use of resonant inclusions. This "supercoupling" is shown to have unique anomalous properties: an almost uniform phase along the narrow channel and weak dependence over its geometry.  相似文献

The Sn/Si(111)-(square root 3 x square root 3)R30 degrees surface was so far believed to be metallic according to the electron counting argument. We show, by using tunneling spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, photoemission, and photoelectron diffraction, that below 70 K this surface has a very low density of states at the Fermi level and is not appreciably distorted. The experimental results are compatible with the insulating Mott-Hubbard ground state predicted by LSDA+U calculations [G. Profeta and E. Tosatti, Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 086401 (2007)].  相似文献
