A new series of symmetrical S-shaped oligomers 4,4?-bis(ω-2-(ω-[(bromophenyl)diazenyl]-alkoxy)phenoxy)hexylbiphenyl consisting of two different spacers (inner -(CH2)6- and outer -(CH2)n-) have been synthesised. Their physical, thermal and texture observation over various transition temperatures are reported. The outer spacers for these compounds vary from n = 4 to n = 9. The oligomers with even number of members exhibit monotropic phase in which the compound with n = 4 shows nematic (N) phase whilst those with members n = 6 and 8 exhibit N and smectic A (SmA) phases. However, the homologs with odd number of members display enantiotropic phase in which the compound with n = 5 exhibits N and smectic phases whereas the members with n = 7 and 9 are predominantly smectogenic. The temperature range of N phase for even-numbered member decreased with elongation of the outer spacer. The smectic phase stability among the members in the present series increases when the outer spacer n is increased from 5 to 8.  相似文献

The liquid crystalline (LC) properties of two series of non-symmetric dimesogenic compounds consisting of cholesterol and azobenzene-based moieties interconnected by ω-oxyalkanoyl spacers of varying length are compared: one series (AOC-n) has an octyloxy chain attached to the azobenzene mesogen unit while the other (AOCF-n) has a perfluoroheptylmethyloxy chain. In general, compounds bearing the fluorinated alkoxy chain exhibited LC properties over a much broader temperature range than those with the alkoxy chain. In addition, the AOC-n series exhibited the chiral smectic C (SmC*), smectic A (SmA) and cholesteric (N*) phases depending on the length of the central spacer, whereas the AOCF-n series favoured the formation of only the SmA phase with the N* phase completely suppressed. Both series showed an odd-even dependence of the isotropization temperature on spacer length.  相似文献

The synthesis and mesomorphism of a series of liquid crystal trimers made by covalently linking two cyanobiphenyl moieties with a central salicylaldimine core through two flexible spacers are reported. Nine different oxyalkyleneoxy spacers varying in the number of carbon atoms and thus, methylene units from 3 to 11 were used to understand structure-mesomorphic property correlations. The optical microscope and differential scanning calorimeter were employed to evaluate their phase transitional behavior. All the trimers exhibit an enantiotropic uniaxial nematic phase over a wide thermal range (>80 °C) while a homolog comprising an octamethylene (even-parity) spacer displays, additionally, a metastable smectic phase. The nematic-isotropic transition temperatures critically depend on the parity of the spacer with the values for the odd-parity spacer containing homologs being lower than those of the even members, a feature generally observed in oligomesogens.  相似文献

The synthesis, molecular structural characterisation and mesomorphic behaviour of lanthanidomesogens with the formula [LnL(LH)2 ][X]2 are reported. These mesogens were derived from ligands (LH- n ) formed by covalently linking the pro-mesogenic cholesterol segment with the N-(n-decyl)salicylaldimine core through either an even-parity (4-oxybutanoyloxy/6-oxyhexanoyloxy/8-oxyoctanoyloxy) or an odd-parity (5-oxypentano-yloxy) spacer. These ligands were designed based on the recently conceived concept of decoupling the anisometric segment from the metal-coordinating site by a flexible spacer to account for the stabilisation of nematic and/or smectic phases at lower temperatures. The even parity spacer ligands are polymesomorphic whereas the odd parity analogue exhibits only the chiral nematic phase. In contrast, the complexes display solely the smectic A phase indicating that the variation in the nature of lanthanide has no influence on the general phase behaviour of the complexes. The clearing temperatures of both the ligands and the complexes display an odd-even effect; the even members show relatively higher transition temperatures.  相似文献

Two photosensitive chiral liquid crystalline azobenzene‐containing polymethacrylates having different length of flexible spacer connecting chromophores with backbone were synthesized and their phase behavior and photo‐optical properties were studied. Both polymers consist of lateral methyl substituents in ortho‐position of azobenzene chromophores providing high photosensitivity even in red spectral region as well as high thermal stability of photoinduced Z‐form of azobenzene chromophores. It is shown, that smectic phase (SmA*) formation in films of polymer with longer spacer predetermines its quite unusual spectral response to UV and subsequent visible light actions. The SmA* phase promotes spontaneous homeotropic alignment of azobenzene chromophores in polymer films. UV‐irradiation induces not only E‐Z isomerization but also results in disruption of homeotropic alignment, whereas subsequent visible light action enables to obtain films with the low degree of chromophores orientation. The photo‐orientation phenomena under the action of polarized light of different wavelength on polymer films were studied. The possibility of using red polarized light of moderate intensity for optical photorecording on polymer films is demonstrated. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Abstract

A novel system of non-symmetric dimers containing 4-n-alkyloxy-substituted cinnamic acid and cyanobiphenyl groups has been studied. Two series were prepared: in one the flexible spacer was varied in length while the spacer was fixed. The spacer length has a profound influence on the nematic-isotropic transition temperature of these materials and a large odd-even effect is observed for the series. The terminal chain also plays a significant role in determining the liquid crystal phase behaviour: a smectic A phase is exhibited for the ethyl and propyl homologues, in addition to a nematic phase; this smectic phase vanishes for intermediate chain lengths but then reappears for the nonyl and decyl members of the series. X-ray diffraction has revealed the structure of the smectic A phase for the ethyl homologue to be intercalated, whereas that for the decyl compound is interdigitated. The existence of the intercalated smectic A phase has previously been explained in terms of a charge-transfer interaction between unlike mesogenic groups. However, for the non-symmetric liquid crystal dimers described here this specific interaction appears unlikely and we discuss, therefore, other possible mechanisms for the formation of intercalated smectic phases.  相似文献

Recently, we reported that a rod-like molecule, 4-[4-(7-hydroxyheptyloxy)phenyl]-1-(4-hexylphenyl)-2,3-difluorobenzene, exhibited a nematic phase with a layered structure and smectic C phases consisting of three states. We prepared a homologous series of the rod-like molecules in which a 2,3-difluoro-1,4-diphenylbenzene unit and a hydroxyl unit are connected via a flexible methylene spacer. We investigated their physical properties using polarised optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Although they showed nematic, smectic A and smectic C phases, the phase structures were found to depend on the flexible spacer length. Those compounds possessing a shorter spacer length than a heptyl unit exhibited bilayered smectic A and smectic C phases, whereas those possessing a longer spacer length than a heptyl unit showed conventional monolayered smectic A and smectic C phases. A nematic phase with a smectic-like layer ordering was observed for the compound possessing an octyl unit. The structure–property relations of the amphiphilic compounds are discussed.  相似文献

A new series of symmetrical S-shaped oligomers 4,4′-bis[(5-cholesteryloxycarbonylpentyl alkoxy)hexyloxy]biphenyl consisting of outer spacers –(COCH2)n– as well as an inner spacer –(CH2)6– has been synthesised. Their liquid crystalline properties and phase transition temperatures with associated enthalpy changes are recorded. The outer spacers are varied from n = 5–8 to 10 and 11. The compounds with even spacer exhibit enantiotropic phase and oligomers with odd parity display monotropic phase. The oligomers with odd membered n = 5, 7 and 11 exhibit N* and SmC* phases upon cooling. Whilst upon heating, the homologues with even-numbered member n = 6 and 10 show N* phase and upon cooling, both compounds exhibit N* and SmC* phases. However, oligomer with outer spacer n = 8 displays enantiotropic N* and SmC* phases. The temperature range of N* phase for even and odd membered decreased as the outer spacers are increased. The odd–even effect has been found in the I–N* transition temperatures where the odd-parity oligomers exhibit lower values when compared to compounds of an even-parity series. The X-ray diffraction measurements reveal the appearance of SmC* phase that can be associated with the monolayer ordering of these oligomers.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

New liquid crystals categorised as cholesteryl dimers have been successfully synthesised through the reaction between cholesteryl 4-(prop-2-ynyloxy)benzoate moieties with n-azido(cholesteryloxy-carbonyl)alkane. All the dimers display enantiotropic mesophases. Whilst the odd-numbered dimers exhibit chiral nematic (N*), twisted grain boundary (TGB) and chiral smectic C (SmC*) phases, the even-numbered members from the same series show chiral smectic A and C. A detailed inspection on mesophase reveals that the chiral centres and the bent conformation of the odd-numbered members are essential for the induction of TGB phase. However, upon decreasing the temperature, the ratio of the transition temperatures (TSmC*-SmA*/TSmA*-I) is found to be 0.95, which indicate the second order transition according to the McMillan’s molecular theory. In addition, the X-ray diffraction study supports the presence of the smectic A phase on the even members rather than the N* by the appearance of the Bragg diffraction peaks at 190°C. A comparison study with the other analogues in which the cholesterol entity is substituted by azobenzene or biphenyl tails has been carried out to assess the relationship between the molecular structure and mesomorphic behaviour.  相似文献

A series of symmetrical dimers consisting of salicylaldimine moieties connected by flexible alkylene central spacer via ether linkages has been synthesized. In order to validate the empirical rule suggested by Date et al. to account for the smectic behaviour of such dimers, the chain length of the terminal alkoxy chain has been kept constant (C8) while the number of methylene units in the central spacer was varied from C3 to C11. Another aim of the present investigation was to understand structure-property relationship in these dimers in which the salicylaldimine mesogenic segment has been used for the first time in dimers. The mesomorphic behaviour of these dimers was evaluated using optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry and the structure of some of the mesophases has been further investigated with the help of X-ray diffraction. Our studies reveal that the dimers consisting of 3 to 8 methylene units in the flexible spacer show only smectic (smectic C and smectic A) phases. For the dimers containing 4, 6 and 8 methylene units in the central spacer, a unique filament growth pattern has been observed in the smectic A phase while cooling from the isotropic phase. The dimers containing of C9 to C11 methylene groups exhibit the nematic phase in addition to smectic modifications. This observation indicates that when the terminal chains are shorter than the spacer, the tendency to form smectic phases is not fully extinguished but is perhaps reduced.  相似文献

A series of liquid crystals (LCs) of bromine-terminated azobenzene were synthesised and characterised. The LCs were composed of an azobenzene core, an alkyl chain and a flexible spacer with a bromine atom at a remote position. Mesomorphic properties were dependent on both the alkyl chain length and the relative position of the bromine atom at the end of the spacer group. The nematic phase was favoured over the smectic A phase for alkyl chains with one and seven carbon atoms. However, the SmA mesophase was dominant for compounds with 10-carbon alkyl chains. The remote bromine atom in the spacer group favoured SmA for homologous with n-decyl chains and the nematic phase for n-heptyl and methyl groups. Molecular modelling showed that the azobenzene LCs tended to adopt the all trans-conformation in the gas phase as the number of carbon atoms increased. For short spacer groups, bent conformations contributed to the level population proportion of conformers. For the non-LC 5a, the gauche conformation became the most stable with a torsional angle of –68.9°. X-ray experiments showed a monolamellar SmA mesophase in an antiparallel arrangement. Absorption maxima at 360 and 440 nm were assigned to π–π* and n–π* transitions, respectively.  相似文献

Among unsymmetric oligomesogens, chiral dimers formed by connecting a cholesteryl ester fragment with various aromatic mesogenic cores through a polymethylene spacer have been attracting much attention due to their remarkable thermal behaviour. In particular, dimers containing a diphenylacetylene segment having an alkoxy chain have shown interesting mesomorphic behaviour. In view of this a new series of unsymmetric dimers consisting of a diphenylacetylene moiety having an alkyl chain and a cholesteryl ester unit joined through a paraffinic spacer have been synthesized and their liquid crystalline properties characterized. The lengths of the central methylene spacer (C3, C4, C5 and C7) as well as that of the alkyl chain (n-butyl, n-pentyl, n-hexyl and n-heptyl) have been varied to establish structure–property relationships. These investigations have revealed that all the dimers exhibit smectic A, twist grain boundary and chiral neamtic (N*) phases with the exception of one of the dimers for which only the N* phase was observed. Some differences in the mesomorphic properties of the unsymmetric dimers containing odd or even parity methylene spacers have been observed. The majority of dimers having an even (C4) parity paraffinic spacer show a blue phase while the dimers with odd (C3, C5 and C7) parity spacers exhibit the chiral smectic (SmC*) phase. In some cases, the SmC* phase exists well below (?60°C) and above room temperature.  相似文献

Supramolecular liquid–crystalline polymeric complexes based on a backbone that contains vinyl pyridine units and azobenzene or biphenyl derivatives that posses alkyl chains terminated by carboxylic acid have been obtained by the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the carboxylic acid and the pyridyl moieties. The polymeric complexes behave as side-chain liquid–crystalline polymers and exhibit smectic phases. A new type of H-bonded host-guest liquid–crystalline system is also reported. The liquid–crystalline host copolymers contain both mesogenic acrylate and 4-vinylpyridine units. The guest molecule is an azobenzene that has a carboxylic acid moiety at one of its extremities. The H-bonded polymeric host–guest complexes exhibit nematic phases. Sequential UV and visible light irradiation of the polymeric complex causes reversible photochemically induced phase transitions. The isothermal nematic–isotropic and isotropic–nematic transitions result from the trans-cis and cis-trans photoisomerization of the guest azobenzene in the host–guest system. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The homologous series of side chain liquid crystal polymers, the poly[ω-(4-methoxyazobenzene-4′-oxy)alkyl methacrylate]s, has been prepared in which the length of the flexible alkyl spacer has been varied from 3 to 11 methylene units. All the polymers exhibit liquid crystalline behaviour. The propyl and butyl members show exclusively nematic behaviour. The pentyl, hexyl, octyl and decyl members show a nematic and a smectic A phase while the heptyl, nonyl and undecyl homologues exhibit only a smectic A phase. The smectic A phase has been studied using X-ray diffraction and assigned as a smectic A1 phase in which the side chains are fully overlapped and the backbones are confined to lie between the smectic layers. For the nonyl member an incommensurate smectic phase is observed. The dependence of the transition temperatures on the length of the flexible spacer is understood in terms of the average shapes of the side chains.  相似文献

The smectic properties of four series of dimer liquid crystals containing cholesteryl and biphenylyl groups were investigated by polarization microscopy, DSC and X-ray diffraction. Compounds that contain the strongly dipolar cyanobiphenylyl group exhibit a smectic layer spacing that is about 1.7 times the length of the molecule. Three series of alkoxybiphenylylcontaining dimers exhibit two other smectic modifications. For short spacers, a smectic layer spacing is observed that is about the same length as the molecule and for long spacers the smectic layer spacing is about half the length of the molecule. In the latter cases the entropy change at the SmA-N* transition is clearly larger than for the compounds with the other smectic modifications. One or two compounds in each alkoxybiphenylyl-containing series, that have similar spacer length and terminal group length and have an odd number of flexible units in the spacer, exhibit only a chiral nematic phase, and no smectic phase.  相似文献

High pressure investigations have been carried out on the photo-stimulated phase transition exhibited by a guest–host system, where the host is a non-photoactive liquid crystal. As guest molecules we chose successive homologues of a dimeric photoactive azobenzene liquid crystalline molecule to understand the influence of the length and parity of the alkylene spacer on such a transition. Our studies show that application of pressure as well as the parity of the spacer has a drastic influence both on the static and dynamic characters of the photo-stimulated phase transition.  相似文献

We report systematic studies on a homologous series of twin liquid crystalline (LC) molecules based on phenyl and naphthyl azobenzene ( PnP and NpnNp ) as well as segmented copolyesters based on them. The twin series had the structure azobenzene–oligooxyethylene–azobenzene, where the ethyleneoxy length was varied from 2 to 6 units. The LC properties of the twin series depended on the chemical structure of the azochromophore and also the length of the central oligooxyethylene segment. The PnP series exhibited smectic LC properties for n > three oligooxyethylene units. Conversely, NpnNp series exhibited spherulitic phases only for the shortest member – Np2Np . One non‐LC short spacer twin ( P2P ) and one LC long spacer twin ( P6P ) were incorporated as part of a main chain polyester composed of fully aliphatic segments of sebacate and di or tetraethylene glycol (DEG/TEG) units by melt polycondensation. Non‐LC P2P formed LC polymers even at low (5 mol %) incorporation in DEG‐based copolymers, whereas the LC‐ P6P could do so only at 30 mol % incorporation. The LC properties of the twin molecules as well as copolymers were studied using differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy (PLM) along with variable temperature wide angle X‐ray diffraction. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Phase transition process of PEOm-b-PMA(Az)n was investigated by the simultaneous DSC-XRD measurement using the synchrotron radiation facility. Four endothermic DSC peaks were observed during heating process. These DSC peaks were assigned to the melting of PEO, the transition from SmX, which is a mixture of super-cooled SmC and crystal, to SmC, from SmC to SmA, and from SmA to isotropic liquid state as determined by XRD profiles. In SmC phase, the liner expansion coefficient calculated from the spacing variation of the smectic layer distance was larger than that of the other phases. This result reflected the fact azobenzene moieties in the long-side chains of PMA(Az)n forming the smectic layers and then they were tilted and stood up during the heating process.  相似文献

Chiral non-symmetric dimeric liquid crystals consisting of a cholesteryl ester moiety as chiral entity and a biphenyl aromatic core, interconnected through n-butyl (C4) or n-pentyl (C5) parity alkylene spacers, have been synthesized and investigated for their liquid crystalline properties. All the dimers exhibit enantiotropic mesophases. The first member of the dimers having the C4 central spacer exhibit only the chiral nematic (N*) mesophase, while the higher homologues also show smectic A (SmA) and twist grain boundary (TGB) mesophases. The dimers of the other series containing the C5 central spacer also have stable SmA, TGB and N* mesophases, except for the first which does not show the TGB phase. Both series of compounds show a weak odd-even effect with terminal alkyl chain substitution, while the spacer length has a marked influence on the phase transition temperatures.  相似文献
